THIRTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

I N THE COURSE of his teaching Jesus said to

the crowds, "Beware of the scribes, who like to

go around in long robes and accept greetings in

the marketplaces, seats of honor in synagogues, and

places of honor at banquets. They devour the houses

of widows and, as a pretext recite lengthy prayers.

They will receive a very severe condemnation."

He sat down opposite the treasury and observed how

the crowd put money into the treasury. Many rich

people put in large sums. A poor widow also came

and put in two small coins worth a few cents. Call-

ing his disciples to himself, he said to them, "Amen,

I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all

the other contributors to the treasury. For they have

all contributed from their surplus wealth, but she,

from her poverty, has contributed all she had, her

whole livelihood."

St. Al’s Gals Club Update

Crafters Needed!

Our new club has been progressing nicely. We had a speaker

from the Food Bank of Northern Nevada update us on their

work at our last meeting, along with a faith sharing and Pope

Francis discussion.

Our next meeting will be Monday, November 9th from 6:30

-8:00 pm in the Rectory Gathering Room. This is a very

important meeting because during the meeting we will be

creating the banner to represent St. Albert’s at the Diocesan

Synod. The GALS club was thrilled to be asked to work on

such an important task. We hope all our members will be able

to come and help craft, we will have the banners ready to work

on and some suggested designs to make the process go more

quickly.

We meet on the second Monday of every month - remaining

2015 meeting dates are 11/9 and 12/14. All ladies of the parish

are welcome to attend our meetings - if you have any questions

send them to our email address [email protected] or

call President Lalita Cole at 775-762-5144.

We hope to see you at our next meeting!

deacon’s corner Conversations at Table

TO LOVE LESS THAN WHOM DO YOU SERVE?

Deacon Chuck Lanham

W HATEVER YOU POSSESS is never yours to store or stash away; it is a gift on loan from God to assist you

in living as Christ taught us. Have you ever taken inventory of all your possessions? How tightly do you hold

them? How hard would it be to give some or everything you possess away? Do you possess your possessions or

do your possessions possess you?

Jesus once told a great crowd, “If anyone comes to me without hating his father and mother, wife and children,

brothers and sisters, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple. Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after me

cannot be my disciple….In the same way, everyone of you who does not renounce all his possessions cannot be my disciple.”

That really doesn’t sound at all like Jesus, does it? Throughout his entire public ministry Jesus preached and taught of love:

love of God, neighbor and self. Yet here he quite clearly and unequivocally states that in order to be one of his disciples we

must hate those with whom he has consistently called us to love! It truly seems to be a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an

enigma!

Here again, we find ourselves encumbered by our linguistic understanding and cultural bias for that word: hate.

Luke’s Gospel, written in Greek, uses the word miseo which literally translates to hate in English, which has resulted in some

critics insisting that Jesus was really preaching hate. Fortunately claims of “hate speech” can quite easily be debunked and

dismissed.

Ancient biblical languages such as Aramaic and Hebrew contain far fewer words than modern languages which

necessarily result in the use of more extreme language due to the lack of more nuanced verbiage. For example, there is no

word for “like” in Aramaic or biblical Hebrew. Biblical scholars and theologians for the most part agree that in the context of

the passage from Luke’s Gospel the word miseo would be better interpreted as “to love less than” rather than hate given our

more extreme prejudice for that word.

There are additional instances to be found in the Old Testament that further support this interpretation, for exam-

ple: Genesis 29:30, Judges 14:16, and Deuteronomy 21:15-17, although some Bibles have softened the language by replacing

hate with dislike or even love less although in each of these instances, miseo is the word used in the Greek translation.

We find miseo again used by Jesus when he says “No servant can serve two masters. He will either hate one and

love the other, or be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.”

Something else to consider, while subtle, is critically important to greater understanding, and that is this: we must

ask exactly what Jesus considers to be possessions. It isn’t just material goods that we possess, rather Jesus considers all of

God’s creation, including humanity, and that adds an entirely new dimension to his message.

His message remains the same; it is a matter of establishing the proper priorities. Love God above all else and

love your neighbor as yourself. As Christians we must love God more than, not less than. ________________________________

Centering Prayer An Introduction to Contemplative Practice

St. Albert’s Centering Prayer group, led by JoAnn and

Chuck Baird, is on the first Monday of each month at

7:00 pm in the chapel.

On Centering Prayer

The Catechism of the Catholic Church (CC), § 2653,

says:

The Church ‘forcefully and specially exhorts all the Chris-

tian faithful…to learn ‘the surpassing knowledge of Jesus

Christ’ (Phil 3:8) by frequent reading of the divine Scrip-

tures…Let them remember, however, that prayer should

accompany the reading of Sacred Scripture, so that a dia-

logue takes place between God and man. For ‘we speak to

him when we pray; we listen to him when we read the

divine oracles.’

Centering Prayer is a spiritual custom based upon the

Word of God, Lectio Divina. We strive to increase the

time we spend alone with God to 15-20 minutes twice a

day. The purpose of our gathering is to encourage one

another each month in this sacred, individual practice, in

the words of CC, § 2560, in “the encounter of God’s thirst

with ours.”

All members of the Centering Prayer group invite you to

join them in the joy of this spiritual discipline.
