It seems that one of the few constants in life is change. As we made the difficult decision to get out of the Purebred Business, Hirsche’s expressed the desire to purchase our Cowherd and as a natural offshoot purchased all the 2011 born bulls last summer. We appreciate and thank all of you who have supported and made our Past Sales so Successful and Rewarding and invite you to the NEW EDITION BULL SALE.This is a strong set of bulls and we are confident that as you compare the performance of these bulls with the breed as a whole you will find the extra performance, maternal strength, carcass traits and cosmetics to make your program more profitable. WELCOMEIt’s with much excitement and enthusiasm that we invite you to our first “New Edition”

Bull Sale. We’re excited to have been able to add the Anderson and Family Hereford operation to ours. It is a natural fit. Floyd was responsible for us getting in the purebred operation some 32 years ago. Our first Hereford cow 46K was a gift from Floyd. He taught me much of what I know today about cattle and how to market them. From 1979-1983, I was his herdsman. We then, went to Fort Macleod and bought our own place where Floyd continued to tutor us for several years.

The Anderson’s have always put the commercial cattleman first and their cow herd represents that. Much of the bloodlines in their herd are the same as ours especially, over the last couple of years and we have both used a lot of the same Herd bulls.

Our emphasis the last 10 years has been carcass and getting Hereford cattle that will grade for the packing plant and still be able to maintain a functional cow herd. We believe in ultra sound and have over 25 years of data behind these cattle. Darryl and Floyd have also used this technique to enhance their program.

We’re also pleased to announce our partnership with a company that is going to help expand our meat shop and move our cattle program ahead. We’re in the process of sourcing a packing plant and will be able to ship natural beef locally and over seas. We are working to join alliances with many of our commercial cattlemen that use our bulls. We will then, purchase their calves back for our retail meat operation. There are many good Hereford cattle in the country, but many have different areas of emphasis than we do. We know our cattle fit the demands of our meat shop better than any and we need these genetics to come back from our bull customers to our meat shop, so we in turn can offer them to our consumers. We will have more details sale day.

Once again we thank our many customers and friends for their support and help over these last few years. We look forward to working with all of our old customers and many new ones. We’re committed to maintaining the Anderson program similar to the way Darryl has and only sell his top bulls in this sale. NOT one of his bulls have been sold or taken off the top. Only the top 40% of the bulls are offer for sale. We feel this is by far the best over all group of bulls we have ever been able to assemble at one sale.

Sold at the Calgary 2006 Bull Sale for $12,500 to Rocking G and in 2007 was named Grand Champion Bull at Bonanza for Lexi Girodat. He then went on to be named Grand Champion Bull that fall after servicing cows in 2 herds. He is siring some of our top carcass calves with great hair coats. The high selling bull at the Calgary Bull Sale the year we bought him. TWISTER is a rugged, heavy muscled bull with good bone and legs, a strong top, deep side and strong quarter. The progeny will be an asset to our breeding program and to the breed as a whole. His progeny are true to his pedigree type. The females look exceptional, they are easy doing yet feminine like his dam and grandma the first ones calved last year and several bought in top calves. The sons are masculine and have that Herd Sire look. As a group they ultrasound well for REA and Marbling. He had a weaning index of 121, yearling index of 135, a rib eye index of 118, and marbling index of 150. Best of all he passes these traits on. His sons have been high selling feature bulls for several years and are working in several top purebred herds across North America and his daughters were all we hoped they would be. He has truly curve bending EPD’s and performance. Note his breed leading birth weight and calving ease numbers and combine that with performance numbers that are also breed leading, then there is his milk and total maternal and finally top of the breed Feedlot Merritt Index and Marbling. A goggle eyed 121M son we retained to use on heifers. After four calf crops, he is in the top 1% of the breed for calving ease and the top 1% for birth weight. Not only do his calves start lighter and come out easy, but they really perform and grow well above average and they ultrasound very well for carcass traits. We calved his first daughters this spring and they show great potential and have near perfect udders like his dam. We’ve started to use him on some of the cows. A 105T son was the 2nd high selling bull in last year’s sale selling to Van Newkirk Herefords. We also used two 105T sons on our own replacement heifers this past year and they sell as Lots 94Y and 236Y.

We looked long and hard before we found the 157K son we wanted to put into our program. 58U was one of the thickest 157K sons we’ve seen and was one of the easiest fleshing bulls we’ve ever had on the ranch. 58U will consistently lower birth weights and worked real well on heifers. His first daughters calved and are good milking. One of his sons topped the sale last year selling to Upstream Ranch.

The 102W progeny carry the same classy stamp as the 71S cattle and most carry extra pigment. His dam has been one of our best cows and comes from a cow family that has produced more Herd Sires for our own use than any other cow family on the ranch. She is also the dam to our 37S Herd Sire that we’ve used successfully for several years.

There are several top cows in this pedigree.

Terrific performance and performance EPD’s for a heifer’s first calf. He indexed over 100 for both weaning and yearling and his Weaning EPD is in the top 30% and Yearling EPD in the top 25%. His Milk and Total Maternal EPDs are also in the top 35% of the breed. His dam is proving to be one of the top young cows in the herd with extra eye appeal, great pigment and a real nice udder. Her heifer calf this year is one of the very best. 19Y combines the maternal strength of Harland with two of our best uddered, most proven cow families. The daughters out of 19Y will be the keeping kind.

21Y is another good son out of the Harland bull Eric Lawrence bought as a sale feature. He is a bigger frame bull with the highest Weaning Index in the offering at 129 and a Yearling Index of 107. His Weaning EPD is in the top 20% of the breed and his Milk and Total Maternal EPD’s are in the top 10% of the breed. His marbling EPD is also in the top 35% and his actual marbling index was 132. If you are after well balanced performance with some extra maternal look at 21Y.

We’ve had the request to raised a few polled bulls by some of our customers and the first Polled bull we decided to use was Golden Oak Maxium 28M. We’ve been very impressed by his daughters all over North America and we’ve also admired the thickness in several sons. 27Y is a moderate frame polled bull with a little extra thickness. His dam has been a very consistent producer giving us 5 daughters for replacement with another keeper in the heifer pen this year. Her only other son sold to McNabb’s at Fort Macleod.

This could be the sleeper of the sale. I bought this guy’s sire 767 for $20,000 several years ago, just on his maternal strength and marbling. This guy will have the highest marbling score of any of our bulls in the offering. His dam is ranked in the top 1% of the breed. His Mother has the highest marble score of any cow I have owned. Not only is she a high marble cow with great milk but she is one of my top producing cows. Her last year’s calf was one of our top heifer calves that we are showing in Denver.

A Polled outcross that is as good as we can raise. Just look at his EPD profile. In the top 13% for weaning weight, 10% for milk and 6 for total maternal. Then look at the carcass where he’s in the top 1% of the breed and by a lot. You only need.75 to be in the top 1% and he’s over 1. His marbling is still in the top 50% which is unheard of with that size of Ribeye. He will add carcass to any cow herd. His dam is a Show Champion herself and was one of the highest selling cows in Canada when we sold her for $20,000 for ½ interest. 45Y’s sire is known across the Hereford industry as one of the top female producing bulls in the breed. He will fix the udder on any cow. We will be retaining a semen interest in this guy.

This is maybe my pick of the entire group for the sale. He’s a true beef bull. Not many bulls combine the power, depth, easy fleshing and pigmentation this guy has. He’s moderate in his make-up and still one of the heaviest in the group with the same feed. It will be exciting to see the cow herd he will help to create. His sire, an Agribiton champion is bred to create muscle and pigment. 108Y is a ¾ brother to the lot 19Y bull.

Another very interesting bull. He’s a Rambo son which I wish had a 100 of. We will be using Rambo more again as he adds as much carcass as any bull in the breed and still adds performance and power. This bull is big and will add pounds in the right places. He’s in the top 1% of the breed for rib ey and 4% for weaning weight and 10 for yearling and still 34% for total maternal. I like this guy’s make-up. He also should leave pigment and fix the feet on any cow herd.

A Simple Guide to EPD’sEPD’s are only one of several tools that can assist you in finding the bull that will best meet your needs and help you reach your long term production goals. EPD’s do not indicate how many pounds will be added to a herd’s average by using a particular bull. Only the differences among bulls is relevant. For example if you have been using a Hereford bull with the breed average Birth Weight EPD of +3.6 and you buy a bull with a birth weight EPD of +7.6 how much will you birth weight increase? The answer … “who knows?” Theoretically he would have the genetics to add 4 pounds to your birth weights, so if your calves were averaging 80lbs they could average 84lbs. This assumes both bulls were used on the same cows, (a percentage of birth weight is determined by the cow’s genetics) and all other variables such as weather, the type or amount of feed available remained the same. If you have been using a bull with a breed average weaning EPD of +45 and your new bull has a weaning EPD of +60, on the same group of cows the new bull should have the genetics to add 15lbs to the average weaning weight should all the other environmental conditions be equal. If you wish to take advantage of EPD’s it is important to know which traits are most advantageous to your herd and your projected market and to be aware of the EPD’s for the bulls you are using to compare them to the bulls you plan to purchase. Remember only the difference between the EPD’s is relevant. Another consideration is a bull’s EPD’s can, and usually will, change as more information is added, especially if his progeny are analyzed. These changes take place twice a year as the Association conducts genetic evaluations. A thought from Darryl on calving ease. Birth weight or Birth Weight EPD is not necessarily the same calving ease as several other factors such as a cow’s pelvic area or calf shape and length, even nutrition and exercise can influence calving ease. Single trait selection for low birth weight and birth weight EPD’s for the bulls to use on your main cowherd may also lead to lower weaning and yearling weights over time as most lower birth weight bulls have lower performance.
