● Kagawa Family Row House Gate (Yokoyama, Iwakuni City)

Long ago, five families ruled what was then known as the Iwakuni clan. One of these families, the Kagawa, lived in the house before which this gate stands. It is said that Masatsune Kagawa built the gate in 1693. The gate is a prime specimen of the type of architecture that surrounded the homes in which samurai families of the day resided and was designated as a cultural treasure by Yamaguchi Prefecture. The Kagawa family owned other gates in addition to this, including those used for passage and those that stood between the front of the house and the yard. It is known that people determined which gate to use based upon their station in life and the task they had to accomplish. Although the exterior of the gate can be observed all day from the road outside, the grounds can only be observed with the consent of the descendents of the Kagawa family, who still live within.
