WELCOME Hire A Hero Gorillas Rugby Club would like to welcome all to the November 2015 newsletter. The aim of these publications is to provide a very brief summary of the work the Hire a Hero Gorillas have been conducting over the previous months, and to also provide a look forward to the future. ABOUT US Hire a Hero is a registered charity that provides support for military personnel who have served our country. The charity was formed to ease the difficult transition from military to civilian life by offering assistance with employment, training, housing, and care as well as specialist support for the injured. The affiliated charity rugby club, aka ‘The Gorillas’ are a tool used to promote the charity and raise awareness for the cause worldwide, as well as making direct donations to the charity from our own fundraising efforts. SPONSORS As always, and on behalf of all at Hire A Hero Gorillas Rugby Club, we’d like to thank our personal donors and sponsors, whom without their generous support, the club would not function: o SRX Security o Zoo Sports o Masons Textiles o The Grammar School at Leeds o WR Active Learning o The Yorkshire Knee Clinic o The 2020 Group o The Horse & Farrier, Otley

INAUGURAL GORILLAS’ BALL On 29th August, the Victory Services Club, London, provided an excellent venue for the first Hire a Hero Gorillas’ Ball. After months of planning by Gorillas Richie Mayson and Dez White, well over a hundred guests arrived, all in fine form, ready to enjoy an evening of fine food and good company. Among the evenings’ guests were J.P. O’Reilly, Will Fraser and Ben Ransom from Saracens Rugby Club, the recently retired Chris Bell (Ex-London Wasps captain and England Saxons), and a number of other supporters of both Hire a Hero and The Gorillas.

Saracens’ Will Fraser and Ben Ransom occupy the foreground, with

J.P. O’Reilly no doubt keeping watch…

A successful raffle, with winners walking away with some unique items, ranging from Gorillas merchandise to specially bottled wine, was followed up with yet another successful auction, overseen by Gorillas special guest ‘Shandy’ Sparey, who introduced the crowd to some of Herefordshire’s finest humour and rural auctioneering skills.

‘Shandy’ Sparey gets the auction underway.

Hire a Hero’s Gerry Hill MBE QGM + Bar and Chris Bell provided the post-dinner entertainment, with Chris Bell giving the audience a fascinating insight into the world of modern, professional rugby and taking a Q&A session which, inevitably, focussed on the Rugby World Cup.

Chris Bell fields questions from the audience on England’s prospects in the RWC.

Maybe he knew something we didn’t…

GORILLAS IN METHERINGHAM, LINCS A little late to print, but back in February, Lincolnshire based members of Gorillas Rugby, Karl Williams and Dave Matson, hosted a fundraising evening in Metheringham. With live music, a raffle and a variety of stalls, the evening raised over £875 for Hire a Hero. We would like to thank all at Metheringham Village Hall, The Star and Garter and Emily’s Beauty for their help.

AND A VERY SPECIAL THANKS TO… On the 12th of September, Georgia Nesbit, niece of Gorillas captain Gareth Nesbit, ran the Junior Great North Run at the Newcastle Gateshead Quayside. Running a distance of 1.5 km in an amazing time of 9 minutes 30 seconds, raising funds and awareness for Hire a Hero in the process, Georgia has made us all very proud of her achievement!

Thank you Georgia and very well done! We hope you enjoyed your pasta!
