Who Were the Hippies?• A subculture originally a youth movement that
began in the United States during the early 1960s and spread around the world.
• The word hippie derives from hipster, and was initially used to describe beatniks who had moved into San Francisco's Haight-Ashbury district.
• They created their own communities, listened to psychedelic rock, embraced the sexual revolution, and used drugs such as cannabis and LSD to explore alternative states of consciousness.
• The believed in peace, love, & music.
The San Francisco Sound
• The San Francisco Sound refers to rock music performed live and recorded by San Francisco-based rock groups of the mid 1960s to early 1970s.
• It was associated with the counterculture hippie community in San Francisco during these years.
Psychedelic rock
• A style of rock music that attempts to replicate the mind-altering experiences of hallucinogenic drugs.
• It emerged during the mid 1960s among garage and folk rock bands in Britain and the U.S.
• Psychedelic rock is a bridge from early blues-based rock to progressive rock and heavy metal
Psychedelic Consciousness• This was seeded by countercultural gurus such as Dr.
Timothy Leary– a Harvard University professor who began
researching LSD as a tool of self-discovery in 1960 • And writer Ken Kesey with his Merry Pranksters staged
Acid Tests– multimedia "happenings" set to the music of the
Warlocks (later the Grateful Dead) • Documented by novelist Tom Wolfe in the literary classic
The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test (1968)– traversed the country during the mid-1960s on a
kaleidoscope-colored school bus
Hippie events World Wide
• In 1967, San Francisco popularized hippie culture, leading to the legendary Summer of Love
• 1969 Woodstock Festival on the East Coast. • In the United Kingdom, mobile "peace convoys" of
New age travelers made summer pilgrimages to free music festivals at Stonehenge.
• In Australia hippies gathered at Nimbin for the 1973 Aquarius Festival

A music festival, billed as An Aquarian Exposition, held at Max Yasgur's 600 acre
dairy farm in the rural town of Bethel, New York from August 15 to August 18, 1969.

• The festival exemplified the counterculture of the late 1960s – early 1970s and the "hippie era".
• Thirty-two of the best-known musicians of the day appeared during the sometimes rainy weekend in front of nearly half a million concert-goers.
• It is widely regarded as one of the greatest moments in popular music history and was listed on Rolling Stone's 50 Moments That Changed the History of Rock and Roll

• Friday, August 15• The first day officially began at 5:07 p.m. with
featured folk artists– Richie Havens – Sweetwater - The Incredible String

Saturday, August 16
• The day opened at 12:15 pm, and featured some of the event's biggest psychedelic and guitar rock headliners.– Quill - Keef Hartley Band - Country Joe McDonald - John
Sebastian - Santana - Canned Heat - Mountain - Grateful Dead - Creedence Clearwater Revival - Sly & the Family Stone
– The Who began at 4 AM, kicking off a 25-song set including Tommy
– Jefferson Airplane • Grateful Dead's performance was plagued by technical problems,
including a faulty electrical ground. Members Jerry Garcia and Bob Weir reported getting shocked every time they touched their guitars.
Sunday, August 17 to Monday, August 18
• Joe Cocker - Country Joe and the Fish - Ten Years After - The Band - Blood, Sweat & Tears - Johnny Winter featuring his brother, Edgar Winter, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young began around
3 a.m. with separate acoustic and electric sets. Paul Butterfield Blues Band - Sha-Na-Na - Jimi Hendrix
• The festival's chief medical officer, Dr William Abruzzi told Rolling Stone magazine: "These people are really beautiful. There has been no violence whatsoever which is really remarkable for a crowd of this size."
• Max Yusgur, who provided $50,000 and 600 acres of his land, addressed the crowds on the last day of the event. – You have proven something to the world ... that
half a million kids can get together for fun and music and have nothing but fun and music.“
– There were however two deaths • a teenager was killed by a tractor as he lay in his
sleeping bag and another died from a drug overdose.
• The festival caused some inconvenience to the surrounding communities and some area residents were suspicious of the looks and behavior of the young people who attended.
• Yet the festival was peaceful. The event, thought by some to mark a high point in the American counterculture
