• A course introducing the basics of polymer science, plastics melt rheology and characteristics of plastics with demonstration on machines and recycling.
COURSE OUTLINE• Polymers and Polymerization (Definitions, polymer structures, linking of monomers, effects of higher molecular
weight, polymerization reactions, naming of polymers, macromolecules, origin of plastics, classification of plastics,
designing plastics with enhanced properties)
• Physical properties and rheology of molten resin (Molecular weight and its effects, molecular weight distribution,
Tg, Tm, shrinkage, crystalline and amorphous behavior, formation of crystal structures, elasticity, viscosity,
visco-elasticity, creep, die-swell, neck-in, shear flow, extensional flow, shear rate)
• Introduction to commonly used plastics (like PE, PP, PVC, PS, PC, PMMA, ABS, PET, Nylon and TPEs. Slides showing
structure, types, properties and uses.)
• Different Fabrication Processes (A brief explanation of fabrication processes like Blown Film Extrusion, Blow
Molding, Pipe Extrusion, Sheet and Thermoforming with videos and animation as required.)
• Effect of MFR (different grades and its effect on fabrication)
• Difference in crystalline and amorphous plastics. Effect of cooling.
• Workshop tour (Tour of all the workshops showing the molds and dies taught in the morning session)
• Recycling of plastics. (Importance of recycling, types of recycling, recycling symbols and biodegradability.)
• Demonstration of recycling machines.
