Summary Statements

Page 4 A Summary of Plans

Eighty eight percent of students in the Class of 2014 (289 graduates) attended four-year colleges. The overall percentage of graduates who plan to continue their formal education now stands at 96%.

Page 17 SAT

The class of 2014 achieved at a higher level than those in the previous years. The Critical Reading score rose by 22 points, while the mean score in Math increased by 24 points. There was a 12 point rise in Writing as well.

SAT Critical Reading

The Critical Reading score of Hingham students rose by 22 points from last year’s score to a mean of 573. Hingham’s score is 57 points higher than the state average. The national average score is 497. Hingham students score 76 points higher when compared to the national group. Hingham students continue to compare very favorably to both groups.

SAT Math

The Math score of Hingham students increased by 24 points this year. Hingham’s mean score is 60 points above the state average. Hingham students beat the national average by 78 points.

SAT Writing

Hingham’s mean Writing score was 571, a1 11 point increase from the previous year’s class. Hingham’s mean score continues to outpace both the state and national averages. The class of 2014 scored 62 points higher than their peers in Massachusetts and 84 points higher than students nationally. Hingham students far outperform their peers which may indicate the strength of our writing program. Few colleges use the writing score in their evaluation of a student’s application and some schools use the score strictly for placement in classes.

Page 20-21 Biology SAT Subject Tests

In Hingham, the Biology test (Ecological or Molecular) is usually taken by honors level students upon completion of the course in the 9th grade year. The Hingham curriculum lends itself more to the Ecological focus. Students are generally not exposed to molecular concepts until they have completed chemistry, typically taken in the sophomore or junior year at Hingham High School. The mean score of Hingham students on the Biology—E exam rose for this year’s class by 20 points achieving a mean of 673. Fewer students typically sit for the Biology Molecular exam. Only 7 students did so in the class of 2014 earning a mean of 675, an increase of 5 points over the previous year.

Page 22 Chemistry SAT Subject Test

The Subject Test in Chemistry is usually taken at the end of the 10th grade year in Hingham as compared to at the end of the junior year in the rest of the state and country. Hingham’s mean Chemistry score was 675, an increase of 5 points. 24 students sat for this exam. Hingham students still beat the state mean by 19 points.

Page 23 English Literature SAT Subject Test

The mean score for the Class of 2014 rose by 31 points. This year ten more students sat for the exam (28). Hingham’s mean score of 654 is above the state mean of 627 and well above the national mean of 619.

Page 24 Mathematics Level I SAT Subject Test Scores for students in the class of 2014 increased by 9 points compared to the previous year, earning a mean of 658. Hingham students continue to compare very well to the rest of the nation. They scored 26 and 37 points higher than both the state and national average respectively.

Page 25 Mathematics Level II SAT Subject Test The mean score of 703 on the Math Level II rose by 30 points from the previous year’s mean of 673. A mean score above 700 certainly is impressive.

Page 26 Physics SAT Subject Test

The number of Hingham test takers in physics more than doubled in 2013 and continued to grow to 39 test-takers in 2014. Students continue to perform well achieving a mean of 686, and increase of 14 points over the previous year. Our test takers out-perform the state and nation by 28 and 19 points respectively.

Page 27 Spanish SAT Subject Test The mean score for the Class of 2014 increased by 18 points compared to the previous year, earning a mean score of 654. Hingham students scored 34 points higher than their state counterparts and 3 points higher than the national average. This is most likely attributed to the number of native Spanish speakers who sit for the test.

Page 28 United States History SAT Subject Test

The mean score on the US History exam increased by 14 points. Twelve more students than the previous class, 50 students, elected to take the exam. More Hingham students sit for this Subject Test than any other. Hingham students continue to out-perform the state and nation by 27 points each.

Page 29 World History SAT Subject Test Since the addition of AP World History in the sophomore year, more

Students feel that they are well prepared to take the World History Subject Test. Hingham has seen as many 32 students (class of 2010) take the World History Subject Test. The class of 2014 saw a decrease of 11 students (7) sit for the exam. The mean score for the class of 2014 was 707, a 24 point increase over the previous year. Hingham students scored 87 and 81 points higher than their state and national counterparts respectively.

Page 30 SAT Subject Test Participation Rates

Hingham students take the SAT Subject Tests at a fairly high rate with 43% of the class of 2014 participating. 24% of Massachusetts students and 15% of students nationally do the same. Most colleges that require SAT Subject Tests are the more competitive schools.

Page 32 Advanced Placement Exams

Of the 239 graduates of Hingham High School in May 2014, 113 seniors took 283 Advanced Placement exams. Approximately 47% of the graduating class participated in the AP program by taking one or more exams. In total, 238 students took 457 exams. The impressive level of competence demonstrated by our students proves that they are truly ready for college level work. This year Hingham was one of 45 Massachusetts school districts to be named to the College Board's 2014 AP District Honor Roll for expanding access to Advanced Placement (AP) curriculum and maintaining or improving the percent of students scoring 3 or higher.

Page 33 AP Mean Grades The mean grades of Hingham students continue to be strong. With 47% of the graduates taking an AP class, our students are demonstrating mastery of college level content in their senior year.

Page 34-35 AP Course Enrollment and Percent of Grade 3 or Better Seventeen different AP exams were taken during the 2013-2014 school year. 47% of the senior class participated in the AP program by taking at least one AP class. 15 of the 17 exams taken by Hingham students saw at least 90% of students score a 3 or better.

Page 37 AP Scholars

91 of the 238 candidates (38%) who took AP exams were named AP Scholars. Two of our students were named National Scholars. This award is granted to students who receive an average grade of 4 or higher on all AP exams taken and a grade of 4 or higher on eight or more exams. One student earned the honor of the AP International Diploma which is a globally recognized award for students interested in pursuing university study outside of their native country. It requires students to display mastery on AP Exams across several disciplines and represents an exceptional level of achievement. Students must earn scores of 3 or higher on five or more total AP Exams based on the exam criteria requirements.

Page 38 National Merit Scholarships

14 students or 5% of the graduating class earned recognition from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. There were no semifinalist designated students in the Class of 2014, however 14 students received commendation for their achievement on the test.

SAT SUBJECT TESTS

The SAT Subject Tests, which some colleges require for admission or placement purposes, are one-

hour multiple-choice tests in specific subjects. Unlike the SAT Reasoning Test which measures more

general abilities, the SAT Subject Tests measure knowledge of a particular subject and the ability to

apply that knowledge. 99 students took 283 subject tests in 2014. The average SAT scores of those

students (97) who took both the SAT and Subjects Tests were

Critical Reading 649 Mathematics 669 Writing 653

43% of Hingham students who take the SAT also take SAT Subject Tests compared with 24% in

Massachusetts and 15% nationwide.

Some of the more than 20 Subject Tests offered are:

Biology-Ecological

Biology-Molecular

Chemistry

English Literature

World History

French, French with Listening

Latin Literature

Mathematics Level I

Mathematics Level II

Physics

Spanish, Spanish with Listening

US History

World History

Some colleges require various combinations of Subject Tests, and some colleges allow students to

choose which test scores to report. Many colleges do not require students to submit Subject Tests for

admission.

NOTE: Hingham students who take the Biology Subject Test generally do so at the end of grade nine.

Similarly, Chemistry Subject Tests are usually taken at the end of grade ten. Most students who

participate in additional subject testing do so at the end of their junior year.

Advanced Placement Scholars

AP Scholars are designated in recognition of their exceptional achievement on the college level

Advanced Placement (AP) examination. Nationally only 21% of the more than 2.2 million students

who took AP exams in May 2014 performed at a sufficiently high level to merit such recognition. In

Hingham, 36% of the 237 candidates were so honored.

The AP Scholar award is granted to students who receive grades of 3 or higher on three or more AP

exams.

The AP Scholar with Honor award is granted to students who receive an average grade of at least

3.25 on all AP exams taken, and grades of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams.

The AP Scholar with Distinction award is granted to students who receive an average grade of at

least 3.5 on all AP exams taken and grades of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams.

The AP National Scholar is granted to students in the US who receive an average grade of at least 4

on all AP exams taken and grades of 4 or higher on eight or more of these exams.

The AP International Diploma is a globally recognized award for students interested in pursuing

university study outside of their native country. It requires students to display mastery on AP Exams

across several disciplines and represents an exceptional level of achievement. Students must earn

scores of 3 or higher on five or more total AP Exams based on the exam criteria requirements.

National Merit Scholarship Corporation

Merit scholars are identified from their performance on the PSAT/NMSQT. A student who is identified

as a “semifinalist” is one who has scored in the top half of one percent of each state’s high school

senior class. Scholarship awards made to semifinalists identify those students as finalists. Semifinalists

bring honor to their schools and their parents. However, it is the individual student who is recognized

in the merit program for outstanding test performance that indicates exceptional academic promise.

Commended students are those who scored among the top two percent of merit program

participants who took the qualifying test. Commended students have also demonstrated

exceptional academic promise.
