LeBoeuf eyes full recovery from

cancer

We recently learned that one of our own was in the battle of his life. TMHS Hall of Famer Alan LeBoeuf ’79 was recently diagnosed and fighting a very rare form of cancer. Local sports writer, Ron Coderre talked with Alan and wrote the following for the Putnam Town Crier. We have reprinted the story with Ron’s permission.

By Ron P. Coderre A story by Adam McCalvy on MLB.com posted on March 12, 2013, titled “Upbeat LeBoeuf on road to recov-ery from Cancer” brought to my attention by former Gris-wold High School and Eastern Connecticut standout Archie Drobiak, not only caught my eye but made me sit up and take notice. Drobiak and Leboeuf were opponents in high school at Griswold and Tourtellotte respectively. They became teammates and friends when both arrived at East-ern Connecticut State University, where they played base-ball for Coach Bill Holowaty. The story on MLB.com “hit me in the gut” was Drobiak’s reaction to the news.

Continued on page 3

Al LeBoeuf and cancer, those two words were unbelieva-ble and could not be synonymous. LeBoeuf the 1979 Tourtellotte Memorial High School graduate is a legend in northeast Connecticut, noted for his baseball ex-ploits. Legends don’t get hit by cancer. But as we all know, cancer has no discretion or mercy on whom it strikes or when it strikes. A call to LeBoeuf in Surprise, Arizona where he’s in spring train-ing with the Milwaukee Brewers confirmed our biggest fears. LeBoeuf openly stated the news was absolutely correct.

We also learned that as determined as he was

on the baseball diamond, LeBoeuf, along with outstand-

ing medical care, is in good spirits and determined to

beat the dreaded C word that often takes the wind out of

even the most optimistic individuals.

Above: Al LeBoeuf doing what he does best. Compliments of MLB.

In September, it was pretty bad, I'm not going to lie to you. There were days when I sat there and I didn't think I'd ever see these [players]

again. The good Lord willing, here I am. -- Al LeBoeuf

Left: Al LeBoeuf ‘79 during a bas-ketball game in his senior year. While Al is best known for his prowess on the baseball dia-mond, he also excelled on the basketball court. Al was among the first class to be in-ducted into the TMHSA Athlet-ic Hall of Fame. He is entering his 32nd year in professional baseball.

“Yes, Ron it’s true. I do have cancer,” LeBoeuf

told us in a telephone interview. “I’m fortunate that the

doctors’ found it early and I’m determined to get back to

where I was before the discovery. Baseball is my life. I

still have a lot to bring to the table and I plan to be able

to do everything, including running, hitting infield, pitch-

ing batting practice and everything else that goes with

my job as a coach,” were the words that came over the

phone from more than 2,000 miles away.

The Story

It all started in May last year on an off day when

LeBoeuf, then with Triple A Nashville, drove to meet the

other coaches for a round of golf. A scratch golfer and

in good shape for his 53 years, LeBoeuf was perplexed

when he started to cramp up on the 16th hole. Thinking

it was simply because he hadn’t played golf since spring

training he disregarded the symptoms as tightness in

the calves, causing numbness in his toes and lower

legs.

The following day the team traveled to Tucson

and while throwing batting practice his toes went numb

again. A few days later in Las Vegas the symptoms

recurred once more while he was throwing BP. The

pain and numbness was so severe LeBoeuf was barely

able to get off the field.

Suspecting a nerve injury in his back, doctors

ordered an MRI, but instead discovered a cancerous

spot on his left hip, which was described as POEMS

syndrome. LeBoeuf suspects the cause of the cancer

goes way back to 1985 in Triple A ball when, as a player

he suffered a severe bone bruise from what he de-

scribes as a “plunking.”

“The news of cancer crushes you,” said

LeBoeuf. “You hear it occurring in other people but you

never imagine it happening to you. I was fortunate that

it was detected early. And I’ve been blessed with the

unwavering support of my wife, Laura and son, Mac,” he

said thankfully.

POEMS is a rare medical syndrome that basi-

cally is a plasma-cell disorder. It generally strikes twice

as many men as women and usually occurs after the

age of 50. If untreated it can be fatal, however, as in

LeBoeuf’s case 60% of those affected survive five years

or longer when POEMS is detected early.

Road to Recovery

Currently LeBoeuf is at spring training on a pair

of crutches and braces on his legs, providing support to

his still recuperating body. He describes his current

duties as analyzing and evaluating hitters in the batting

cage and working on the mental aspects of the game

with the young players.

By April 1 he expects to receive his assignment

from the Brewers and promises that he’ll be down to

one crutch by that time, although he still requires physi-

cal therapy three times per week.

But since being hit by POEMS life hasn’t been

that easy. The road to recovery has included five long

months in a wheelchair, which caused his legs and his

body to atrophy. It’s also meant intensive physical ther-

apy under the direction of his wife’s niece Lauren Hoo-

ver, a physical therapy doctoral candidate in the Clear-

water, Florida area near Palm Harbor, where the

Leboeuf’s reside.

He’s also been on an oral chemotherapy regi-

men, 21 days on and seven days off, that appears to be

working. He has no ill effects from his five sessions of

chemo, hasn’t lost any hair or any of his energy. He

acknowledges that he’ll take chemo forever if it does the

job and allows him to stay in baseball and appreciate

his family and friends.

“One good thing that came from this is that I’ve

had the opportunity to watch my son Mac play baseball

at Southeastern University in Lakeland, Florida,” said

LeBoeuf. “It was trying on Mac when we learned of my

cancer. He was preparing to leave for college and had

to deal with this situation.”

“And thank God for Laura. She’s been unbe-

lievable. It truly has been for better or for worse,” he

said.

The Will To Win

LeBoeuf’s four years at Tourtellotte were surre-

al. Four years of varsity baseball and basketball. Prob-

ably the best hitter to ever grace the Tigers diamond

and to top it off a much better than average basketball

player. One of the best baseball players to come from

Eastern Connecticut University, although he only spent

two years there before being drafted by the Philadelphia

Phillies. He spent seven years in the minors as a player

prior to becoming one of the most respected minor

league coaches in baseball.

His professional career has spanned more than

30 years and is in its fourth decade. Most of his time

was in the Phillies organization where he spent 20

years. He’s also been with the Mets, Royals and Toron-

to prior to coming to Milwaukee, where he’s been part of

the Brewers staff for four years.

Al LeBoeuf has been a winning athlete all his

life. He’s had to battle for every job he’s earned along

the way. And now he’s facing yet another obstacle in

the form of POEMS syndrome. But just before we hung

up and I assured him he had the prayers of the people

of Thompson and Northeastern Connecticut, he said, “I

can see the light at the end of the tunnel. I’m ready to

get back on the field.”

We were also sad to hear of the passing of

Former Tiger Justin Benoit, age 35. Justin was a musician who played with numerous bands to include Cold Cave based in Los Angeles, California. Justin loved the arts and worked at Magna Legal in Philadelphia, PA. He is the son of Steven and Nancy Benoit of Quinebaug, CT. We also heard from Betty Willett LeClair about the recent passing of her dear friend Alma Hayes Masley. Alma was from the Class of 1947. Betty also informed us of the passing of Helen Cassells Whit-ney also from the Class of 1947. Please keep all their families and the families of all our lost love ones in your prayers and thoughts.

This pic-ture was featured in the program of Heart Truth’s Red Dress Fashion Show in New York City on February, 7, 2013. Follow the Fifty: Models of Heart Health is an energetic and empowering women’s heart health initiative that was funded through The Heart Truth Com-munity Action Program, a women’s heart health awareness and action campaign that warns women about heart disease and pro-vides tools to help them take action against its risk factors. Originally designed to recruit fifty women from northeastern Connecticut to serve as models of heart health, the initiative was expanded due to the overwhelming response to the model recruitment campaign. 183 wom-en were selected on February 29, 2012, to lead others in Connecticut’s “Quiet Corner” on a remarkable journey of heart health. Other TMHSAA members involved with this wonder-ful initiative includes Rachael Johnston ‘75. If you want to learn more visit them at: www.followthefifty.org/

TMHS All-State List Becoming a

Reality

One of the many projects the TMHSAA and the TMHS Athletic Department have been working on over the past few years is developing an accurate list of all the Tourtellotte athletes who have earned All-State honors. One of the biggest problems we’ve encountered has been the lack of records kept by both the school and the CIAC. “Unfortunately there is no repository of records for us to check,” states Deb Spinelli, TMHS Athletic Director, “...and we had to develop the list by investigating a num-ber of sources.” Started in the 1950’s, approximately 50 TMHS athletes have earned All-State honors. Thompson sports enthusiasts agree, that nearly as many would have earned the award had it been available from 1909-1950. All-State honors recognizes that athlete to be among the very best in their sport in the State of Connecticut. Many All-State athletes go on to play college and professional sports. The intent of the project is to capture a significant part of our history before it is forever lost. “Deb has done an outstanding job recreating the list,” states Joe Lindley ‘74, President of the TMHSAA, “but we need the member-ship to help us make certain we’ve included everyone, especially those from the earlier years. “Deb has been working with the CIAC in hopes of correcting the problem, but it does not help us now,” added Lindley. If you can provide further information contact Deb at: [email protected] or by calling Deb at: 860-923-9303 or by contacting the TMHSAA at: [email protected].

We recently received this photo from Pauline Almquist. Some of the workers seen are probably early stu-dents of TMHS. We asked local historian Dave Babbitt if he recognized the picture and location and he tells us, “This looks like the ‘Card Room’ gang...Charles Anderson was the boss in the department and the father of Elsa Anderson who lived in the house now occupied by Billy Cheverko.” Accord-ing to Dave, Karl Almquist, father of Danny ‘48, Elaine ‘50, Pauline ‘62 (St. Joe’s), Rudy 52, Hank ‘55, is in the third row, fifth from the left.

We asked Pauline for more information about her

family - she responded:

My aunts, Albina Bourque Swanson, Dora Bourque Wagher, Rose Bourque. These were my mom's sisters. I don't know where she was that day - she also worked in that mill -Georgianna Bourque Almquist. By the way, this is the Grosvenordale mill, not the one in North Grosvenordale. My Dad's Uncle Charlie was Carl Anderson (I do think everyone called him Charlie). He was born in 1872 in Sweden. He married my Dad's father's sister, Augusta Almquist. They lived out their final years in a home on Rear-don Rd, near the mill. I don't know if you know Billy Cheverko, but he bought the house from my cousin, Wesley Anderson. Hank tells me that Rudy (my brother, not my Dad) worked for a short time in the Grosvenordale mill when he was a teen, along with Dick Gainer. I think Dick went to Tourtellotte too. Can no longer remember! Would have to ask Rudy. Hank said Rudy's boss was Jimmy Waldron. I don't know when my Dad started working in the Grosvenordale mill, or how many years he worked there. I haven't talked to Danny yet --- would like to see what he remembers. Hank said Dad was working there when Hank was young. Eventually, my Dad finished out his career at Packard Woolen Mills in Dudley, Mass. That's the only place I remember him working. We lived across from the mill and I sure remember those bells ringing every afternoon - I think at 2 p.m. - and watching the people coming in and going out at the change of shifts. The neighborhood dogs would howl while the bells were ringing!

I do think the lady at the right end of row 2 is Evelyn Barrette, who was a neighbor when I was young. But I can't verify that. She's got to be a Barrette! I will try to reach Dan later and see if he remembers any-thing. I'm off to the Y right now - Pauline

TMHS Alma Mater, written in 1943

Recently we were blessed to see the actual copy of the TMHS Alma Mater written by Mary Thorpe Mead in 1943, while she was a senior at TMHS. The 70-year-old document is in perfect shape. We hope to get a copy framed and placed in the museum cases outside the Memorial Room. The Alma Mater reads:

Dear Tourtellotte now we hail thee, Our Alma Mater true,

Thy sons shall ever be loyal, Firmly we stand for you.

The red and black shall always be, Our fondest guiding star,

To lead us on to manhood’s goal, Tho’ we may wander far.

We shall honor, love and serve thee, And keep thy faith always,

Thy sons and daughters praise thee, Forever and a day.

And may we ever strive to keep, The colors in the sky,

Now let us raise a hearty cheer, To dear old Tourtellotte High.
