What gift would you give to represent your city? Throughout history there is the tradition of giving formal gifts to honor a host or guest—think of the Three Wise Men bearing gold, frankincense and myrrh. Here in the Northwest, a tribal potlatch is a gift-giving occasion where the hosts demonstrate their wealth and prominence by giving away goods. The status of a family is expressed not by who has the most resources, but by who distributes the most resources.

When Mayor Jerry Willey travels the world as an ambassador for Hillsboro or welcomes visitors to our city, he gives a gift that is uniquely Hillsboro. In 2012, he initiated the Mayor’s Selection for our City’s Public Art Collection, purchasing artwork to support the local arts community and to underscore the city’s creative identity. While the original artwork remains on display in the Civic Center, archival prints are presented as gifts locally and internationally. The artwork is also featured on the front of the greeting cards that Mayor Willey sends out to commend citizens.

For 2015, Mayor Jerry Willey announced the selection of Rood Bridge Park with Mid Century Modern Style, by Tualatin artist Anna Lancaster as this year’s addition to the Public Art Collection. The colorful oil painting on canvas was selected

from 47 entries that represented the characteristic landscape, city views or landmarks of Hillsboro. Lancaster’s paintings are characterized by rich color and a textured surface created by using both a brush and a pallet knife to apply the oil paint. She hopes that the tactile qualities of her paintings stimulate the senses and touch the emotions.

The Mayor’s first selection in 2012 was Jackson Bottom Mist, an oil pastel painting by Amanda Houston that captured the poetic beauty of the wetlands. Plein Air paintings, created outdoors on site, have proved successful in capturing characteristic views

“I was drawn to paint that inspiring landscape scene of the stone foot bridge, the scenic Rood Bridge Park landmark. It is one of the first images that come to mind for all of us who enjoy the respite and community recreation at Rood Bridge Park. “ ~ Anna Lancaster

of Hillsboro. The 2013 selection, Wine with Friends, a watercolor by Sandra Pearce was painted outdoors at a local vineyard. In 2014, Amanda Houston, was selected again for Quintessential Eve, portraying the dramatic light of Hillsboro skies.

If you would like to see Anna Lancaster’s painting, it is on view at the Shirley Huffman Auditorium, Hillsboro Civic Center, 150 E Main Street. The Mayor’s Gift is one of several displays of artwork in the city curated by the Cultural Arts Division. The breezeway of the Civic Center features selections from the Walters Cultural Arts Center gallery, and the display inside of Shirley Huffman Auditorium is curated by the Hillsboro Arts & Culture Council to focus on artists who live and work in Hillsboro.

Every year, the Hillsboro Arts & Culture Council (HACC) awards grants to local organizations that provide cultural programming to the Hillsboro area. Since its inception in 2008, the Community Arts & Culture Grant program has provided over $211,000 in funding to the local arts and culture community.

This year, the HACC is proud to announce that 13 arts and culture organizations have been awarded a total of nearly $50,000 in grant funding—double the funding provided in previous years. These grants will not only support arts and culture projects, but will also help local groups to grow as organizations and provide new and exciting programs for our community. The organizations that have received this year’s grant awards include:

Additionally, this year the Hillsboro Arts & Culture Council awarded Core Support grants for the first time. According to Community Arts Program Supervisor Melissa Moore, Core Support grants allow community organizations to focus on doing what they do best. “It’s really a way to say to an organization, ‘we believe in your core mission and want to further that.’” This year’s HACC Core Support grants will strengthen the mission and core operations of three Hillsboro-based organizations:

Bag & Baggage Productions is the only theatre company in the Pacific Northwest with a focus on producing major literary adaptations of classic dramatic literature. They remove barriers from students to experience live theatre through their PASSPORT program, which offers free tickets to all high school students from a four county region.

The Washington County Museum’s mission is “to ignite the imagination and bring to life the diverse cultures that so richly define this remarkable region.” They educate the community on the historic, cultural, artistic, and technological development of Washington County.

Hillsboro Community Youth Choir teaches, educates, and performs choral music in three choirs of children from 1st grade through high school. They provide both musical education and an opportunity for personal growth in a supportive and team-building environment for children not interested in participating in other team activities, such as sports.

Unsubstantial TerritoriesJim MatthewUpstairs & Downstairs GalleriesAugust 4 – September 28

The work of Jim Matthew resonates with the subliminal drama and layered complexities of inner life: here, recognizable figures and images emerge from a cacophony of abstract elements, making a liquid dance between the chaos of experience and the ordering power of the conscious mind. Matthew’s work reveals a sometimes disorienting world shaped by composites of past and present, memory, sound, color and ceaseless sensation. Each painting mirrors the method by which Matthew creates his art, taking intuitive paths to narrate singular moments of being. Through his work, viewers enter into the fluid currents and territories of experience that surge always just beneath the surface.

Universal Truths Kathleen CosgroveUpstairs & Downstairs GalleriesJune 2 – July 22Kathleen Cosgrove explores how archetypal symbols and patterns in art have been shared across the globe from early civilizations to the present. Early art from different cultures shared many of the same themes, such as access to an afterlife, fertility, prosperity, renewal, food and other resources for survival. This exhibit shines a light on how art operates as a universal language across time and cultural divides and serves as a reminder that we are not so different from each other, after all. Here, our shared concerns and revelations—and our unity as a species—are revealed in the timeless symbols of art.

Conversation Project: The Power of Playwith Jonathan Blasher & Tara Doherty June 16 | 7 pm

“Grow up and stop playing.” Most of us have heard this admonishment in some form as we move from youth to adulthood. But is it good advice? In our age of inactivity and frequent screen time, what are our kids learning from us about how to be healthy adults? Research shows that play and physical activity can have positive effects on children’s health, well-being and education; they also boost health and creativity in adults. This conversation, led by play activists Jonathan Blasher and Tara Doherty, visits the concept of play among children and adults and explores the value of play. Note: this session includes interactive play for all ages and abilities. Arrive early for a seat! This program is made possible by the generous support of Oregon Humanities, the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Oregon Cultural Trust. This event will be held in the Walters Gallery on the second floor.

Supernatural Tales: Annual Outdoor Storytelling Picnicwith Anne RutherfordAugust 18 | 7 pm

Cool down from the summer heat with a little chill down your spine! Enjoy this very special evening outdoors with award-winning storyteller Anne Rutherford as she shares a batch of summer ghost stories on the front lawn of the Walters. We provide the stories and the punch and you bring the picnic and a chair or lawn blanket! In case of rain, event will be held indoors.

Hillsboro Symphony OrchestraThe Hillsboro Symphony Orchestra is made up of 60+ creative individuals who live, work, and play beautiful music in the Hillsboro area. What brought this amateur group together? A shared passion for playing music. HSO was formed to give amateur musicians from throughout Washington County a place to perform, and give the county a community orchestra to hear.

Lynn AdamoAfter 24 years working at a computer as a Graphic Designer, Lynn Adamo shifted to expressing her creativity in a more visceral, hands-on way. Now a mosaic artist based in Hillsboro, her work has been displayed around the world. You can find her public art installations found throughout the region.

Joaquin LopezJoaquin Lopez is very active in the Latin American arts and culture community of Greater Hillsboro. Following in his father’s footsteps, Joaquin picked up the guitar and began writing songs at a young age; throughout the years he’s developed his own approach to songwriting and often collaborates with different local organizations and communities creating and recording songs as a group experience.

Arianne JacquesArianne has been acting since her first play at age 6 in which she played the tortoise in “The Tortoise and the Hare.” Since 2007, she has been involved as an actor in every Bag&Baggage season, and doesn’t intend to stop. Arianne is also the Box Office manager for the company.

Jeff JurrensA retired Fire Marshall, Jeff spends his time painting in his studio that overlooks Hillsboro and the Tualatin Valley. For Jeff, “the thrill of moving paint around, making objects of color, creating a thing that is uniquely mine has not diminished…I like physical action in the process and am not afraid of chance...”.

Christine MartellChristine has been an artist since she was a child, and she received a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design. Currently she works as a consultant, teacher, and coach for both individuals and organizations through her business VisualsSpeak. Recently, Christine has become interested in exploring the art of personal stories through words and imagery.

Hillsboro has a vibrant, diverse and thriving arts and culture community. The “Creative Hillsboro” Photography Project shines the light on the creative individuals—dancers, painters, actors, filmmakers, writers, musicians, and many more—that make up the fabric of this community. Local volunteer and photographer Rick Paulson has journeyed through the creative Hillsboro community and captured these artists at work. To see more “Creative Hillsboro” photographs and featured artists go to the Hillsboro Arts & Culture Council’s Facebook page at Facebook.com/HillsboroArts.

Rick Paulson, PhotographerRick has been fascinated with photography since he was old enough to use a camera. In growing up, his father provided many examples of photographs that shaped his personal vision of the world. As a young adult, he learned technical skills in advertising and studio photography as an assistant to a veteran New York photographer. He ran the color lab of a major photographic company, which included working on several projects with Eastman Kodak. In 1999, he left photography to work with Intel Corporation in Hillsboro. Now retired, he has returned to his love of taking pictures.

“My work is definitely rooted in DIY culture,” says Walters teaching-artist Shannon Johnson, who sees art and life as inseparable modes of creation. “For instance, right now,” she says, “I really need some planters for my succulents, so I am going to make them myself. I process my world through making things.” When asked what inspires her to create, Johnson’s response is “everything.” Embracing life-long learning and the ceaseless flow of creativity in all aspects of her life, Johnson brings the DIY spirit wherever she goes, whether that’s the classroom, backyard, or kitchen. She says, “brewing my own kombucha feels a lot like making art to me.”

Johnson is a licensed art educator who has been teaching and writing art curriculum for over seven years, in many diverse settings and with all age groups. Currently she works as a fine-arts specialist at City View Charter School and is a teaching artist at the Walters Cultural Arts Center. Arts education is a role that has allowed Johnson to share the empowerment and pleasure of creation with the next generation of makers and builders. “My favorite days,” she says, “are when I get to share in the personal revelations of my students. It’s inspiring when they see themselves in a way they never did before, when they discover an idea in a piece of art that they are just discovering for the first time. That is what art has done for me, and it is rewarding to see my students experience that transformation.”

Johnson’s enthusiasm for art also stems from the fact that she is herself an accomplished artist whose talents engage materials across a broad spectrum of media, such as fiber art, printmaking, and drawing. Her extensive personal experience in fine arts allows her to bring a multitude of fresh ideas and exciting projects to the classroom, introducing lessons that expose students to the richness of art’s possibilities. This allows the students to discover more about their own artistic preferences, capabilities, and sense of self.

“I had this student who really made an impression on me,” Johnson recalls. “He was so authentic, and upbeat, and delightful. One day he was having trouble following the directions I had given for our painting project. When I came over to check in with him…he just turned to me and exclaimed ‘Confused? Excused!’ Then he gave me a heartfelt grin, and turned back to work on his painting.”

“My favorite days are when I get to share in the personal revelations of my students.”

WHAT’S DIY? DIY STANDS FOR “DO-IT-YOURSELF”!The cornerstone of the DIY ethic is creative independence—the self-permission for individuals and communities to experience the joy and empowerment that comes from developing ideas into real objects of art and functionality, and sharing those experiences with others.

Manager’s note

What does ART mean to HILLSBORO?The City of Hillsboro has an active history of supporting the arts as a way to enhance livability. In fact, the City’s guiding document, the Hillsboro 2020 Vision and Action Plan, calls for over a dozen initiatives in the cultural arts sector alone. Highest on that list are the creation of a cultural arts center, an arts council and a public art program. Within the pages of the new HillsboroARTS Magazine, you will see the dreams of 2020 becoming reality through creative programs, events, classes, concerts, gallery exhibitions, community grants and public art works.

Glenn & Viola Walters Cultural Arts Center The Walters opened on March 16, 2004. Located at the corner of SE 5th Avenue and Main Street, this site has a rich history of community involvement that began when the Trinity Lutheran Church started construction of the church building in 1947. The Walters is a ground-breaking facility that provides expanded opportunities for the entire Hillsboro community, including: youth and adult art education and training, increased access to local, regional and national artists and increased opportunity for individual artists to teach and demonstrate their craft. It is the first site constructed in Hillsboro with the intention of showcasing cultural events and providing community-centered arts education.

Hillsboro Arts & Culture CouncilThe HACC mission is to promote and support the growth of arts and culture as assets for a vital, prosperous and livable community. The Hillsboro Arts & Culture Council (HACC) first convened in the spring of 2007. This citizen advisory committee is appointed by the Mayor and confirmed by City Council. Under the general direction of the City Council, the HACC oversees policies and programs pertaining to arts and culture for the City. It is housed in the Parks and Recreation Department and is administered by the Cultural Arts Program Manager.

Hillsboro Public Art ProgramPublic art is a powerful tool for meeting the goals of Hillsboro’s community plans. Memorable public places strengthen our community. Often referred to as “third places,” they are the places that are neither home nor work. These social spaces attract us to downtown, enliven our neighborhoods, enhance our experiences in parks, inform us about the history and peoples of our place and celebrate our ethnic and cultural diversity.
