Manager’s note

What does ART mean to HILLSBORO?The City of Hillsboro has an active history of supporting the arts as a way to enhance livability. In fact, the City’s guiding document, the Hillsboro 2020 Vision and Action Plan, calls for over a dozen initiatives in the cultural arts sector alone. Highest on that list are the creation of a cultural arts center, an arts council and a public art program. Within the pages of the new HillsboroARTS Magazine, you will see the dreams of 2020 becoming reality through creative programs, events, classes, concerts, gallery exhibitions, community grants and public art works.

Glenn & Viola Walters Cultural Arts Center The Walters opened on March 16, 2004. Located at the corner of SE 5th Avenue and Main Street, this site has a rich history of community involvement that began when the Trinity Lutheran Church started construction of the church building in 1947. The Walters is a ground-breaking facility that provides expanded opportunities that for the entire Hillsboro community, including: youth and adult art education and training; nurturing of local arts organizations; increased access to local, regional and national artists; increased opportunity for individual artists to teach and demonstrate their craft. It is the first site constructed in Hillsboro with the intention of showcasing cultural events and providing community-centered education in the arts.

Hillsboro Arts & Culture CouncilTo promote and support the growth of arts and culture as assets for a vital, prosperous and livable community.The Hillsboro Arts & Culture Council first convened in the spring of 2007. This citizen advisory committee is appointed by the Mayor and confirmed by City Council. Under the general direction of the City Council, the HACC oversees policies and programs pertaining to arts and culture for the City. It is housed in the Parks and Recreation Department and is administered by the Cultural Arts Program Manager.

Hillsboro Public Art ProgramPublic art is a powerful tool for meeting the goals of Hillsboro’s community plans. Memorable public places strengthen our community. Often referred to as “third places,” they are the places that are neither home nor work. These social spaces attract us to downtown, enliven our neighborhoods, enhance our experiences in parks, inform us about the history and peoples of our place and celebrate our ethnic and cultural diversity.

Exhibits are open Monday through Thursday from 9:00 am – 9:00 pm, Friday from 9:00 am – 6:00 pm and Saturday from 10:00 am – 4:00 pm. An artist reception is held for each show on the First Tuesday of each month and features live entertainment and catering by Claeys Catering. The events are free and open to the public.

Hello Neighbor and Pamela Brown Wilkinson – PhotographyAugust 6 – September 24Explore your world and neighbors through a new set of eyes this summer at the Walters Cultural Arts Center. Photographer and Portland’s first Creative Laureate, Julie Keefe designed her project, “Hello Neighbor,” to introduce South Meadows Middle School students to their community by interviewing and photographing people they admire. In turn, Keefe creates portraits of the students. The portraits challenge us to appreciate the rich stories behind the faces of our neighbors. Hillsboro based photographer Pamela Brown Wilkinson has devoted a major portion of her life to capturing images from nature that are both beautiful and fascinating. As an artist she’s drawn to landscapes and compositions that inspire strong feelings, as well as reflection, wonder, and even laughter.

Julie Keefe moved to Oregon from Iowa in the mid ‘80s with a degree in writing. Moving into her new North Portland neighborhood, Julie soon found herself putting down the pen and picking up the camera. She was keen to document in an intimate way her own vibrant, changing community through photography, and to engage young people through her work as a teaching artist. Described as a “cultural ambassador” by former mayor Sam Adams, Julie was recognized for the impact of her art and work with middle school students, becoming Portland’s first Creative Laureate this past January. Though she’s recently been named as one of the 100 Most Creative People by a business and design magazine, Fast Company, Julie’s work for the most part exists outside of the gallery scene—it inhabits and speaks back to the community it directly represents. Julie’s Hello Neighbor project in Hillsboro (previous page) in collaboration with students from South

Meadows Middle School, and the Washington County 4-H, has been a powerful example of how the arts and community can deepen and strengthen each other. The striking large-scale portraits and quotes have been engaging passersby already this year on Main Street, but from August 6 to September 24, the Walters Cultural Arts Center invites you to experience the moving photographs of Hello Neighbor up close, in an intimate gallery setting. During this same time, the second Walters gallery space will also feature the dynamic landscape photography of Hillsboro based artist, Pamela Wilkinson.

For 32 years Hillsboro Community Arts, a local non-profit group, has produced “Showtime at Shute,” a free summer outdoor concert series in Shute Park. The series has become a tradition for Hillsboro families and friends, spreading their blanket or placing their chairs

in the same spot year after year. After three decades of dedicated service, the volunteers of HCA have entrusted Showtime at Shute to Hillsboro Parks & Recreation (HPR) to carry on this long-established summer tradition. HP&R has aided in the production of this series throughout much of its history. HCA passes the torch, knowing its legacy will live on and be honored.Showtime returns for its 33rd year at Shute Park, 750 SE 8th Avenue, on Thursday evenings beginning July 11 at 6:30 pm. The band Stone in Love: Tribute to Journey opened the series. For a complete list of concerts, see the back cover of this publication.

Mark Shapiro, who will talk about the creative projects at LAIKA, from the CG-classic Moongirl (2005) to the remarkable, Oscar-nominated stop-motion features Coraline (2009) and ParaNorman (2012).  The studio’s next film, The Boxtrolls, will debut in theaters on September 26, 2014. Production puppets will be on display.

Instructor Spotlight: Meet Alice Hill

Though she teaches everything from sculpture to watercolor, Alice Hill’s own artistic background is in scientific illustration—and it shows in her classroom: replica elephants and penguins and a host of other wild animals are laid out across a table while students use bright pastels to re-imagine them on paper. “Nature inspires me most of all,” she says. “The great variety of plants and animals, it’s always changing, always inspiring.” Since 2001, Alice Hill has been an art instructor for Hillsboro Parks and Recreation, and has taught for the Walters Cultural Arts Center since its inaugural year. Teaching for this community—particularly the youngsters—is a role that Alice has deeply cherished. “I like to work with kids because I get to play, too,” she explains. “But not only that—I love to watch how kids look at things . . . how they just enjoy their art and approach everything from such a pure place of imagination.” Whether you’re a child, an adult, or somewhere in-between, a class with Alice Hill is sure to spark your imagination and get you looking at art, and the world, with fresh eyes.

Artists from across the region will converge to paint the sights and scenes of Hillsboro at the 7th Annual Hillsboro Plein Air event on September 20 and 21. This annual outdoor painting competition hosted by the Hillsboro Arts & Culture Council brings artists of all mediums, styles and levels to our community, and highlights the wonderful landscapes, city scenes and people of Hillsboro.At this year’s event, painters can fill their canvases with such sights as the woodlands, meadows and waterways of Rood Bridge Park; the historic homes and vibrant street scenes of downtown Hillsboro; and the many colors of the Hillsboro Farmers’ Market’s Harvest Festival.The event also includes two figurative “Quick Draws” where costumed models stage a historically themed tableau vivant or “living picture” for painters to capture. Other special artist events will take place throughout the competition.Painters can compete in three categories: Landscape, City Scene

and Figurative Quick Draw, with cash prizes in each category. A catered Reception and Award Ceremony will close the event Saturday on the East Lawn of the Walters Cultural Arts Center.

You don’t need to be an artist to enjoy this event! Spectators are encouraged to come out and watch the artists at work, or come out to Saturday’s reception to see the completed artwork and meet the artists. Early registration is strongly encouraged! The Hillsboro Arts and Culture Council announces a new benefit for the Arts and Culture Endowment Fund. Primrose and Tumbleweeds, a downtown Hillsboro café and wine bar, will donate $1.00 of every beverage sold during Thurs-

day Happy Hours between June and December to the Hillsboro

Arts and Culture Endow-ment, a fund established with the Hillsboro Com-munity Foundation for the direct benefit of city arts and culture organizations.

The launch of these Happy Hours for the Arts took

place on June 6. Thursday Happy Hours are from 3 to 6 pm at Primrose and

Tumbleweeds, located in the heart of historic downtown Hillsboro at 248 E. Main Street.

Local artist Devin Laurence Field’s sculpture, “Barometer,” will transform the energy of the new sports complex, changing the noise created by sports fans and park users into colored lights and sound.As described by the artist: “The piece takes the overall triangular form of the baseball diamond held aloft by columns and illuminated with color changing, sound activated LED lights. The laser‐cut skin of the diamond form is adorned with intricate patterns

of sports equipment. At the base of the sculpture are various ‘instruments’ people can play: a giant horn, a rattle roller, drum sets and chimes that together form a symphony of sounds. When no one is at the park there is no colored light, when there is noise the sculpture lights up – the louder the noise, the brighter the light. The art is a veritable Barometer of excitement for the ballpark.”Field was chosen from a highly qualified group of applicants with

successful major commissions. The public art selection committee looked for both high artistic quality and artwork that was interactive and engaging to all ages.Field was born in New Zealand and studied at the University of Oregon.
