MAKE YOUR GREAT OUTDOORSGREATER!

Hilliard Area Chamber of Commerce Business Monthly

It is the season of Graduation cer-emonies and celebrations. Congratu-lations to our high school and collegeseniors who will now embark on theirnext journey. As Chamber members, parents, and neighbors watching thesegraduates, have you thought about, as Ihave, “how many of them will return toour community?”

The Mayor’s Administration andCity Council have initiated the con-cept of Hilliard becoming a “LifelongCommunity” and has set out to takesteps toward having our young citizensreturn to our community. What can we,as Chamber of Commerce members, doto encourage these energetic, talented, spirited and goal-oriented young peopleto return to Hilliard?

I don’t propose to have “the answers,”but I thought this is a great time tothink about the “Lifelong Community”initiative. There is nothing that drives acommunity, its organizations, business-es and its government like a youthfulperspective. I think that you will agreewe have all learned from our children. We are a better rounded person because

we’ve learned fromtheir perspectives, andas we grow and havegrown from the com-bined experience of ourliving, and their freshview on life. What canwe as business ownersand professionals doto be an attractive vo-

cational outlet for our young potentialcitizens?

First, although it’s work, we need toembrace how to make the work experi-ence rewarding and therefore enjoyableto come in and make a difference day inand day out.

I believe The Chamber is one way toadd this “enrichment factor” to our dailywork, because we provide networkingopportunities that enable members toform relationships. Our young gradu-ates are looking for “jobs.” What weneed to help them find are relationships.Jobs pay bills, relationships, like invest-ments, pay dividends. These dividendsare less about economics, and moreabout enriching your life through re-

warding work experiences, and these arefound through people. The Chamber ispeople. The Chamber provides peoplewith the opportunity to engage withother members in volunteer activities, and many of these activities support ourcommunity.

If you are not a Chamber member, consider joining to build rewardingrelationships for both yourselves andyour employees. If you are a member, but have not become as involved as youmight like, consider re-engaging andtake a chance at building and enrichingyour relationships in the business com-munity. If you are an active member, bea Chamber advocate to your employees, your friends and neighbors and makesure they know we would like to buildrelationships with them, letting themknow they might find their “job” morerewarding as they build these relation-ships.

I can think of nothing more attrac-tive to a young person than to see ourbusiness community networking, build-ing relationships, and yes, enjoying our“jobs.”
