2011/12 -President’s Report

G’day all, here we are again at the end of another very good Hillgrove

senior cricket season, with the four sides making semi final

appearances and, 1st, 2

nd and 4

ths contesting the grand finals.

Unfortunately the thirds came up against a very good bowling attack

from Guyra and have to be content with third place for this season -

great effort lads! Once again we wrapped up the club championship.

Some solid performances were seen this year with bat and ball right

across the four grades with the magic three figures and equally the five wicket hauls, as well

as some memorable catches and fielding efforts.

We have seen some of our younger players given the opportunity to play in higher grades,

and all of them, with no exceptions, having an impact on the respective grades in which they

played. These young guys will continue to get better and will ultimately find themselves in

first grade with some serious representative duties taking them, who knows where!

On the representative scene, Hillgrove players and officials featured highly once again this

season, within the War Veterans Cup side as well as the MA Connelly Cup.

Once again a club such as ours cannot function without the backing of sponsors, a big

thankyou Crickey and his team thanks for the support. And equally important is the

dedication of the committee, this year an amazing job done by Kris & John, Cuz, Nic, BP,

Jonesy and Reevesy. Also to the work done by the Captains, Brad, Nic, Sharmo, Anthony and

Raj thanks for the leadership both on and off the field and the support and understanding to

me with team selections throughout the season.

We have been very fortunate this season to have had two very talented young lads from

England within our club, they have performed on the field with talent, dedication and a

commitment that we as cricket lovers can only aspire to, they are great ambassadors for

themselves their club and their families, well done Chubbs and Spav ! ( not bad for Poms!!) I

sincerely hope in future years you will look back on your time in Armidale with fond

memories, cheers to you lads!

And last but certainly not least to the players and their families, thanks for a great year.

SOOO The Grove!

Doug.

Hillgrove Colts Cricket Club Perpetual Trophies

Peter Hickey Memorial Trophy

The Peter Hickey Memorial Trophy for the player most likely

to succeed, is in memory of the late Peter Hickey who played

1st grade for the club for approximately 10 years during the

late 1970’s to the late 1980’s. He was an exceptionally

talented bowler, and had been on a world tour with the

Northern NSW Emu’s Cricket club in 1974. The trophy was donated by his family after

his untimely death in 1991.

The Royal Hotel Trophy - Clubman of the year

The royal hotel trophy for clubman of the year

would’ve been donated by Joe Barbato the owner

and publican of the royal hotel. They were our club

sponsors for approximately 10yrs in the late 80’s early 90’s. Joe himself never actually

played cricket for Hillgrove, however his son Peter played in the lower grades for the

grove.

Tom Dye Memorial Trophy - Player of the Year

The Tom Dye Memorial Trophy for the Player of the Year is in memory of the late

Tom Dye who was one of the club’s early players during the 50’s. Tom was a

wicketkeeper and up until his passing he was a patron and a very keen supporter of

Hillgrove Colts Cricket Club.

The Harry Browne - Spirit of Cricket Award

Donated by life member Harry Browne. Harry was an

exceptional batsman, coach and role model for many of

Page 6: Hillgrove Colts Cricket Club 2011/12

the young players of Hillgrove Colts Cricket Club. Harry donated this trophy for not

necessarily the best player in the club, but for a player that plays hard and fair in the

true spirit of the game.

This trophy was first awarded in 2005 and the inaugural winner was David Farmer.

Since then other winners have been:

- 2006: Michael Schaefer

- 2007: Tom Prosser

- 2008: Nick Sewell

- 2009: Clancy Moar

- 2010: Michael Sharman

2011/12 - First Grade

1st Grade Report

Another year has passed with many cricketers really only playing out half a season due to the weather. Most players in the top two grades only got a handful of bats in both the one day comp and the two day comp. Congratulations to all the Hillgrove teams that played on Grand final Day all of which won and once again taking home the Club Championship yet again

Ironically the one day and T20 competitions were washed out with the mighty Grove due to contest the finals in all four grades. Kind of ripped off with Joint premierships but winners are grinners The most pleasing aspect of the year was the emergence of a lot of Junior Hillgrove cricketers sprinkling through the grades. Warwick Browne’s young guys (Thomas and James), Lochie Elks, Jake Farthing, Alexander Brown all playing in the 4th grade final. Rory Sutherland and Harrison King playing 3rd grade. Michael Dawson had a stellar year with the bat in second grade, Scott Brennan played a hand full of games in 1st grade as a bowling batsman but couldn’t get a bowl in 2nds This can only be a positive for the club and hopefully sets us up for the future Matt Baillie had an enormous season with the bat and I think he finally realised that he has the goods to be a great bat. Cuz was too good to get wickets again and his 20 odd in the Grand Final proved that he is not just a bowler almost verging on all rounder status Matt Schaefer (Mr Cricket) finished the season in a purple patch with a couple of hundreds and a high 90’s score, bowled tight lines and was dynamic in the field Josh Croft learnt to score over 30 in an innings and did it regularly throughout the season and he also caught some good catches. Byrne played occasionally but did feature in a 160 run partnership with Chillie in which he cut loose and hit 2 sixes. Chillie bowled fantastic all year and had some good knocks with the bat. Sully has still got it and showed this with bat and ball and the odd cameo wicket keeping show. Hugh Reeves found a regular spot in the top grade and proved that he deserved his spot there even before the Grand Final were he finished the match 33 not out and featured in a 57 run partnership with Adam Spaven to win the match. Adam Spaven bowled well every match but struggled at times to keep it legal both at the crease and on the way home from the pub. He hit the winning runs in the Grand final and supported Hugh very well. Great guy always puts in at training and is always smiling.

Page 8: Hillgrove Colts Cricket Club 2011/12

Christian Wilkinson (Chubby) bowled some fantastic fast spells and surprised even the best batsmen in town with his swing and pace. Another guy who puts in at training everyday and was a pleasure to have played cricket with for the season. It has been an absolute pleasure to have played with both these guys. They have been very professional in their attitude towards the club. They both would be welcome to come back and play with any team that I am associated with. They have supported both the Hillgrove club and the Armidale association at every event. Tom Armitage had a couple of games in 1sts and didn’t look out of place Adam Croft, Ben Marshall, Scott Brennan all made appearances in the top grade throughout the year. All in all a pretty good season. I would like to wish Josh Croft all the best of luck in the UK playing in Chubby and Spavs team and also Matt Baillie and Tom Armitage in their quest for some cricket in the Darwin competition. 2011/12 – Second Grade

2ND

GRADE REPORT

Second grade had another successful year defending the minor and major premierships in the

2 day competition and having to settle for joint premiers with Ex Services in the one day

competition. There were some new faces in 2nd

grade this year which just shows that new

people to town want to play for Hillgrove 2nd

Grade, they are Craig Lord from Brisbane,

Stami Donovan from Taree, Trent Snell from Tamworth (Previously a Hillgrovejunior but

still new to town) and we had to make room for the run scoring machine from 3rd

grade

Michael Dawson.

Throughout the year the side played some great cricket, as captain this was great because

every player performed at different times in either scoring runs or taking wickets when the

team needed it. Our biggest trouble this season was the weather, we just couldn’t finish a

game which left us sitting in 4th position without losing a game with 2 games to go before the

semis.

With a first innings loss to StKilda a top 4 finish wasn’t looking good, but as a team we dug

deep and turned a 21 run deficit into a 7 wicket outright victory which propelled us into top

position which we hung onto to claim for the third year in a row.

Our hunger for our 6th

straight premiership came out in the final series. We batted first and

made 281 and bowled Exservices out for 72.

Grand Final day, the start didn’t change the captain lost the toss AGAIN and Guyra decided

to bat on what looked like an absolute road. With some good tight bowling from lord 4-27

and Donovan 3-22 we bowled them out for 99. Our run chase got off to a shaky start losing

early wickets, Dawson scored his second century in 5 months and Sewell scoring his second

century in 15 years saw the mighty Grover’s win with 8 wickets in hand.

Some Individual performances

Michael Dawson scoring 107 not out on debut against St Kilda

Aaron Whackett 63 against Exservices

Ben Marshall consistently scoring in the 40’s

Scott Brennan 56 against Exservices in semi final

Dave Waters 2 for 2 off 5overs against Exservices in semi final

Declan Waters 6 for 5 off 7 overs against Exservices

Stami Donovan 6 for 15 off 8 overs against Easts

Trent Snell 5 for 32 and 9 for 68 for the match against St Kilda

It just goes to show how the team is going when the 2 opening bowlers (Snell and Donovan)

take more wickets in a season that what they score with the bat.

A big thank you to our casual player this year in Byron whackett probably played a bit more

than he would of like, but it’s a pleasure to have someone with so much experience playing in

our side, sothank you. To all players that had played in 2nd

grade this year thank you,

Also a big thankyou to the mums, wives and girlfriends and Rossco for what you do to make

Saturday afternoon cricket an enjoyable time

Congratulations to both first and fourth grades on your premiership win.

Look forward to doing it all again next year.

2011/12 – Third Grade

2011-2012 – 3rd Grade Report

With 9 washouts over the season, the 11-12 season was kinda short and frustrating for one and all. There were only a few ducks this year, tho you would have expected more, given the “fowl” weather.

Elizabeth Rologas Harris

Due to the weather, the final results weren’t a true guide to our season, with the team only playing Uralla once and then meeting Guyra for the first time all season at the semi-final.

The question remains, where would the season have taken us if the majority of games had been played?

However it turned out, we played the cards we were dealt and ended up losing only 1 game to St Kilda, in the last over, throughout the year.

The introduction of 20/20 over Christmas didn’t give us a new lease of life, just a measure of frustration as we finally got to play, only to be finished by 4pm; in the end beating Uralla, Ex-Servies, St Kilda, and Easts, to make the Final against Guyra, but “SHOCK HORROR” it rained … joint Premiers …?

This year was more of an older team, with a sprinkling of youth (and vigour); however contributions toward a good season were made by all.

The stand-out for the season was PJ Wright in his 2nd season in 3rd Grade. Promoted to the top of the order, he destroyed many attack and a couple guys’ bowling careers, taking 28 off an Ex-Servie’s bowler’s one and only over and doing it again against Easts. Finished with 540 runs, with an average of 60, top score 131 off Easts, scoring 2 centuries and 2 50s. Also took 14 wickets. A much improved player.

Tom Armitage, new to our team this year, a solid opening batsman and a good foil to PJ at the top of the order. Good team player and was sorely missed later in the season (esp against Guyra in semi), playing up the grades and away. Quality batsman, not long for this grade.

Pete Townsend, an up and down year with the bat. Finally got to get a bowl and managed to keep it on the pitch most of the time. 189 runs for the season with a high score of 61 against Tas. As good as ever in the field, with a great run-out in the semi final against Guyra.

Anthony Stoessel, new to the Grove this year. Called up from the juniors sideline the very first game of the season, and stuck with the team until he tried to stop a ball with his jaw.

Page 14: Hillgrove Colts Cricket Club 2011/12

Only missed 1 game; a good fit for the team. 2 for 17 off 3 overs. Keen and turned up ready to play each week.

Tony Jones, 202 runs for the season over 10 games, high score of 61 against Tas. Saved the game against St Kilda, batted, bowled, kept and fielded consistently all year. Great support for myself all year, and stood in as Captain when needed.

Harrison King, first year in Grade cricket. Limited opportunities, took probably the catch of the year in gully early in the season. Youngest of the team. Developed his off-spin as the season went on with 3-26 against St Kilda.

Mick Brennan added much experience to the team. Helped PJ get to his maiden century. Did a bit of keeping and bowling. High score 53 against St Kilda. Started as a casual player and stuck.

Ian Reeves, high score of 50 against Tas (who would have thought 50 would have been bottom score of that game?), not to forget the Golden Duck at Rologas against St Kilda. Shared himself amongst the grades, helped with the team when I was unavailable. Much appreciated. Selector for all 4 grades, make the Captain’s life easier!

Harrison Dickson, limited season, improved bowling immensely on last year’s season. Bowled tight, line and length, not necessarily delivering wickets for him, but doing the job asked of him. Would have been to have him for more games.

Doug Moore, first and only bat in semi – not out. Quality of bowling was not appreciated by opposition batsmen! Consistent bowler. Always ready to offer advice and support.

Bob Kirk, originally just going to be a fill-in player but played the majority of the season. Ever reliable opening the bowling with good line and length. No 1 scorer. Taught some of the younger guys how to do it.

Aiden Gallagher, sorely missed late in the season. Only played 6 games but 2nd leading wicket taker.

Mick Sharman – best season eva!! Batting average 115.

Honourable mentions: Michael Lord – casual player, always eager, helped win the game against St Kilda at Rologas. Lochlan Elks – played a handful of games, mostly 4th Grade, but performed well – player of the future. Rory Sutherland Gary Elks Anil Rajanathan Scott Brennan Trent Snell

Thanks to all who participated throughout the season. Looking forward to next year.

Fourth Grade Report

This year we saw again the rebirth of 4th Grade in the ADCA tournament. I believe that 4th Grade is an extremely good way of introducing the younger players into senior cricket and hopefully allow them to gain the confidence to play in the higher grades in years to come. I expect most of the 1st and second graders started their "cricketing careers" off in 4th Grade. With any luck we will see 4th Grade again next year and for many years after with players making the natural transition to higher grades. This year I was chosen to captain the 4th grade side, something which I have not done previously. Dougie let me know at training the week prior to the start of the season by saying "We are playing a 4th Grade this year", to which I replied with something like "What a great idea" .. his response during my run-up to deliver a blistering quick ball was, "Well that's good to hear, because you are the captain" .. I'm pretty sure I stumbled and bowled down the side of the nets (actually, not that infrequent an occurrence). In all honesty though, this has been one of the most rewarding seasons with Hillgrove for me, since I started in 2004. The keenness of the side always amazed me, most of the side I had never met prior to the first game, remembering their names in the first couple of games was almost comical. What I discovered was that I had a side, that when I asked who wants to bowl or who wants to bat, I generally received 10 hands pointing up at the sky with all players on tippy-toes screaming "me me!" .... which I'm sorry lads, but it actually makes the job of captaining harder :-).

Page 17: Hillgrove Colts Cricket Club 2011/12

There’s some good talent in the side The ability of Alex Brown to bat at number 3 to steady the innings and keep an end. The ability of Jake Farthing and Jimmy to tear the throat out of the middle order bowling attack with consecutive boundaries. Anil with his steady gloves behind the stumps keeping to the likes of Sheeraz who most opposing teams complained was too fast, and most batsman complained "oh not Sheeraz". The Browne brothers, James "Soul Brother" Browne and Tom who were always dependable with the ball, James to take early wickets and slow the scoring down, and Tom to come in with his Leggies to take some middle order wickets. Locky, who unfortunately only spent 1/2 the season with us but was always a good all-rounder to have especially in the grand-final and Tom Carter who as our leading wicket taker was always a handy number 3 bowler to unsettle an opposing side. The senior players of the side, especially Raj who helped to motivate the younger guys and give suggestions to them to help them in their bowling and batting. And this is what 4th grade is all about, and I believe our team pulled this off remarkably well. Unfortunately we will lose a few players next year, like Sheeraz and Jimmy, and will probably lose a couple of the younger players to 3rd Grade (bloody Sharmo always stealing my boys :-) ) but as I expect there will be new blood again and with any luck I will again have an input in bringing the new talent up through the grades and brining in another Grand Final for the Grove Some memorable moments for the year include: * Jake Farthing's fiery 63 not out off Uralla * Sheeraz bowling the quickest I have ever seen him bowl to take 5/12 of Uralla * Parto taking 5/13 of Guyra So in having a very good side, that had depth in both bowling and batting we were able to win both the T20 and one-day formats of the game ... T20 Report

When asked to be Hutchies T20 captain by franchise owner Pete Georkas I thought he was joking, but

soon realised he wasn’t. I knew this would be a great experience, but I was a little worried as I hadn’t

captained a team since I was about 10. That was back in the days when everyone got a turn. Luckily

enough I drew 1st pick at the draft and was able to pick Schaef. This was a big bonus as the guy is a

talented cricketer, with both the bat and ball and he also has captaining experience. In the draft I was

also able to grab a few fellow Grovers, including the grand final winning Hugh “The Cannon Ball”

Reeves, Scotty Brennan, Andrew Curry and Stami Donovan.

First up Hutchies played Matt Baillie’s Cricket New England side and were unlucky on the day. We

were unable to chase down their runs batting second and lost by about 10.

Hutchies second game was against Kingy’s Sportpower side and on the day we were able to chase

down their runs quite easily with an over or two remaining. Our third and final game would be against

Adam O’Sullivan’s McDonalds team. Results falling the way they did we would need to defeat an un-

beaten McDonald’s side to make it into the final. We were able to achieve this after batting first and

setting a total which they were unable to chase down.

This meant we would then play McDonalds again the following week in the final of the New England

Mutual Armidale Premier League.

After losing the toss and McDonalds electing to bat they got off to a flying start. We were able to stem

the flow and restrict them to a total of around 130. Thanks to a 16 run over from Adam Spaven at the

start of our innings and some great batting the whole way down the order we chased down the runs

with a few balls to spare. It was a great win and a great team effort.

The competition was another great success. Great support was shown by the whole of the Armidale

cricketing community.

I would like to make special thanks to Pete Georkas and Hutchinson and Harlow for Sponsoring our

team, also to Sportspower, Mcdonalds and Cricket New England for sponsoring the other 3 teams.

Also thank you to all the sleeve sponsors. Without these sponsors the competition would not be

possible.

A big thank you also has to go to the committee for the hours that are put in to organise this

competition. Thanks also to the Umpires and pitch curator, without a wicket to play on and

adjudication of the game these matches would not be possible.

Thank You.

Soo the Grove

Representative Report

Well as the 2011-12 season comes to an end and we look back at the Representative Season, we can

be quite proud of what Hillgrove has again contributed to the town. While we didn’t have the most

successful season in way of winning comps and trophies, we have seen many of the young blokes put

their hand up and score runs and take wickets and show bright prospects for the future.

We have had a busy year starting with the ACA Masters side visiting in October to take on an

invitational side. Playing alongside players like Monty Panesar, Greg Matthews, Ryan Campbell,

Greg Ritchie, Brad Hogg and all the other great cricketers is something that will stay with me for a

long time. Being set 140 to win in the T20 on a slick Sportsground outfield, we fell 8 runs shy in the

end with Matt Baillie making 53 and myself 50. The Sportsman’s dinner the night before had been a

great experience mixing with the players and listening to Greg Ritchie talk had us all in stitches.

The War Vets Cup side had a mixed season with Narrabri having the wood on us out there again,

taking Gunnedah down a notch, giving Tamworth Gold a run and finally being belted by Tamworth

Blue. We missed out on the finals there, but saw some of the younger blokes like Dawso get an

opportunity in the top grade with the likes of myself, Crofty, Billy, Sully, Chillbo, Chubs and Spav.

The MA Connolley cup side once again had a quite successful season, beating all comers until

Tamworth knocked them off in the last round only to miss the final. The MAC side consisted of a lot

of young blokes, and was well represented by Hillgrove once again. Highlights for the year include

Dawso piling on another ton and Spav routing Glen Innes, Hugo, Jnr Whack, Scotty and Ads Croft

had good seasons too filling up the stat sheets.

Armidale hosted the inaugural Northern Inland KFC T20 tournament in February. We put two sides

into this competition, and were heavily supported by Hillgrove players. The “top” side got a touch up,

while the “twos” lead by Billy advanced to the final against Tamworth. The final was played at the

Sportsground, and the whole ones side stayed to support our boys against those arrogant Tamworth

blokes. There were heated exchanges between the supporters and the Tamworth players, and while I

think we had the upper-hand from the sideline, I think the lads in the twos were probably thinking “I

wish those blokes would shoosh”. Tamworth ended up winning that game quite convincingly on the

back of some quality batting by Michael Rixon.

The Town vs Gown match was revisited this year, with the Town side winning the cup again, and

having been part of both sides over the last several years, I can happily say it was nice to be finally

part of the winning side with Town.

Further Rep honours for the year are highlighted by Matt Baillie playing Central North under 21’s and

touring with the Emus to New Zealand. Billy has had a fantastic couple years with the bat, has worked

on his leggies too, and has now turned his attention to crocodile hunting over the winter months in

Darwin.

I’d like to extend my thanks to all of the players for the season and to John Croft and Doug Moore for

running the show. Thanks Spav and your cuddly mate for being available for Armidale representation,

and hope to see you back here in future seasons. Good luck to Billy and Armo with Darwin Cricket

Club, and to Josh Croft with Heslerton Cricket Club. Hope you blokes come back at some stage to

once again fill the stat columns in Dougie’s Mate.
