      Principal’s Message 

by Mr. Burleigh and Mrs. Songstad  It’s a great day to learn! 

The year is almost half over! January was a busy month with the celebration of Martin Luther King and his life's work and preparing for the end of the first semester of school. All our Hillcrest Hawks have worked hard to master the skills of their grade level. Teachers have developed very focused instruction for individual children based on their specific needs. To share the growth and learning that’s occurred over the last 5 months mid‐year evaluation of student progress is occurring. On February 10 all students will bring home their first semester report cards. This is a wonderful time to check in with your child and celebrate their successes, discuss and set goals around areas that are more difficult for them, and to connect with your teacher to both thank them and discuss the needs of your child. This is also a great time to replenish  student supplies, re‐establish daily routines for homework and cleaning out backpacks, and a time set aside for daily reading.  

 

If you have the opportunity to visit Hillcrest you’ll be delighted to notice that the halls are brightly decorated with both winter themes and art/writings related to the dream of Martin Luther King.

and loved every minute of it!! 

Chasing chickens, jumping on 

bales of hay and taking naps with 

calves. I attended  nursing school 

in San Diego and worked at 

Scripps Medical Hospital. I had the 

privilege to care for the Levitz 

brothers “you’ll love it at Levitz” 

and the man himself, Arnold 

Schwarzenegger.  A turn of events 

caused me to change my field of 

study…..and led me into the 

school system.  In San Diego, CA  I 

worked in a  1st grade bilingual 

class. In Washougal , WA  worked 

in grades 6‐12 Life Skills and 

behavioral classrooms and 

now…….I’ve landed at Hillcrest

Health Room News It’s that time of year again. It is  cold and flu season. Please remember to remind your children about the importance of handwashing in protecting them from germs. Also, please remember that children should be fever/vomit/diarrhea free without medication, for at least 24 hours before sending them to school.  Also, if your student was provided with dry clothing from the health room, please wash and return the clothing. This will allow another student in need the opportunity to have clean dry clothes to change into. Thank you!

I started at Hillcrest as a parent 

volunteer when my daughter began Kindergarten, which was 10 years ago. I loved it so much that in 2009 when my younger daughter started school I decided to be a Para‐educator substitute. I have now been a regular employee for the past 3 years. I have worked in many classrooms, the resource room, recess and the lunchroom. This year I have been able to spend part of my day in the front office, which is a great way to connect more to the families coming in. This is a great school and community to be a part of.  

 

Grade Level Update 

Kindergarten: 

Is learning about fruits and vegetables, comparing two different types of fish, and sharing classroom jobs. They are discussing the letters R and F this week and working with the sight words “with” and “he”. And yes, they are even doing some expository writing. They draw a picture, label it, and write a sentence to describe the picture. Kindergartners are amazing! Favorite Website: https://www.pebblego.com/login/   Username: hchawks  Password: learn  1st Grade: Reading: Make and confirm predictions Phonics: Soft c and g...edg Writing: opinion writing with 2 details and conclusion Math: Use coins to count by 10’s and 1’s. Science: Solids and Liquids Favorite Website: https://www.pebblego.com/login/   Username: hchawks  Password: learn  2nd Grade: In reading and writing second graders are reading about weather,  writing instructions and doing research. They’ve also been talking about  how body language affects communication.  In math they are  interpreting and creating graphs and tables and have been learning how to tell time. Favorite Website: Prodigy Math ‐  https://www.prodigygame.com/  3rd Grade: 3rd grade is working on Opinion writing, learning to give an opinion and support it with reasoning in a multi‐paragraph piece. We are also digging deeper into multiplication and division this month as we master the factors of 6, 7, and 8. We will start to mix in multi‐step problems involving multiplication, division, addition and subtraction! We are all in our biography C.I.A. unit reading, Martin Luther King Jr. We are learning about what makes a person extraordinary, and how people can make a difference in their communities. In Social Studies we have created our setting for the Early Northwest Coast, and will be continuing with the characters and the plot of our Story Path as we learn about these Native Americans Favorite Website: TenMarks Math  4th Grade: Writing Targets: I can write over different time periods for different purposes and audiences. I can plan, revise, and edit my writing. I can use correct capitalization, punctuation and spelling when writing. Reading Targets:  I can use illustrations and other visuals to support what I know about a text. I can use specific details from a text to describe a character, a setting, or an event. Math: I can multiply or divide to solve word problems and I can solve 100 facts in 5 minutes with 97% accuracy. Favorite Website: Hour of Code  5th Grade: In literacy / social studies we are about to start our study of the Revolutionary War, specifically, the events that led up to the signing of the Declaration of Independence.  Fifth graders will also be reading Chains, by Laurie Halse Anderson, which focuses on both the war and slavery. In Math we are continuing our efforts to master the metric system, as well as delving into multiplication and division with whole numbers and decimals.  Favorite Website: TenMarks Math 

 Music: K‐1st grade are learning eighth notes and working on steady beat and rhythm patterns. 2nd grade is working on Instrument Families with our music student teacher, Ms. Scrivner. 3rd grade is working on rhythm improv and rhythm stacking. 4th‐5th grades are starting the music for their upcoming program on March 21st. CHOIR starts on Friday, February 26th.  Look for permission slips coming home soon :) 

 PE:   With this crazy weather, please make sure your child is wearing tennis shoes on PE day!  We are beginning our unit on Volleyball.   Students will learn how to serve, pass, and rotate in a game of volleyball 

Incoming Kindergarten Families: Save the Date 3/10/16  Orientation for next year’s Kindergarten parents @ 6:00 pm  Please plan to attend a Parent Information Night for 2016‐17 kindergarteners at 6:00 pm in the Hillcrest gym.  You will be given a registration packet and  information for your child. All kindergartners attend free full day kindergarten.  The first day to turn in packets is Tuesday, March 15th.   

Literacy Pilot  All Fourth grade classes and one 3rd grade class at Hillcrest Elementary have been selected to pilot Wonders Balanced Literacy over the next 6 weeks. This is a fantastic opportunity for students and teachers to try out new materials prior to a formal adoption. Wonders Balanced Literacy provides thematic overviews, projects focusing on research and inquiry skills, and a digital component such as Writer's Workspace and online text.  

5th Grade Field Trip 

On Tuesday, February 9, Hillcrest 5th graders will visit Lake Stevens High School to hear the high school bands perform.  The trip is from 9:30‐11:30.  Students will ride school district busses over to the high school and back. If you want your student to participate in this field trip on Tuesday, February 9, you don’t need to do anything. However, if you do not want your student to participate, then you need to contact your child’s teacher through email, a phone call, or a note before February 9. If we do not hear from you, we will assume that you approve your child’s attendance.

Winter Weather As we are nearing the winter months, please be aware of weather and road conditions as they pertain to student safety, school start times or possible school cancellations. If your child rides the bus, please familiarize yourself with our snow routes and road closure list. 

Lost and Found Please come by and check our lost and found when you notice missing items. The stack of coats and sweatshirts grows rapidly. The best way to insure that your child’s clothing item is returned to them is to write their name inside with permanent marker.
