COMMODORE’S REPORT

SEASON OPENING

Judging by the number of club Opening Days, Sandy and I have attended over the past few weeks; the 2014/15 season is now well and truly under way. I hope everyone is enjoying the return of summer and taking the opportunity to get onto the water we are

so fortunate to have on our doorstep!And what a range of opportunities we have on offer at

Hillarys. Our members can Dive, Fish, Power Boat and Sail – in big boats and small. These sectional activities are covered in more depth later in this edition of Compass. We can also learn to dance and ride a bike if we want to spend some time socialising with like-minded members on dry land. Not to mention the splendid bar and restaurant amenities which are open to all!

FAT BOYSI mentioned that you can ride a bike. Each Wednesday

over recent years the HYC Fat Boys bicycle group have met at the Club for a leisurely ride to Ocean Reef and back. The camaraderie of this small but growing group is becoming legendary and is reinforced by an annual bike/golf safari to Rottnest. All you need is a bike, an active sense of humour and a few hours free from 4pm on Wednesday afternoon. Lycra is absolutely forbidden!

CLUB GOALOn other matters, those who were at our own Opening

Day a few weeks back will recall that I announced a goal that “Hillarys Yacht Club would have a national champion sailor within three years”.

Why should we have such a goal? Firstly, the primary objective of our Club is “the fostering

and encouragement of sea sports with particular

attention to sea sports involving family participation.” We have several sections actively pursuing this objective however, it’s probably true to say that, as a yacht club, sailing remains our primary activity. If the recent “Discover Sailing Day” is any indication we can expect the growth in membership via our sailing activities to continue.

Anyone watching the dinghy events on a Saturday morning can’t help notice the enthusiasm of the kids and their parents as they organise the rigging of their boats and take to the water. While on the water they are developing independence, resilience, decision-making skills and teamwork. They are engaging in a sport which they can carry through a lifetime - surely that’s good for the individual, the club and the community as a whole.

A Club like ours is only as strong as its membership and clearly the youth of today are our members of the future. While the numbers of young sailors have grown immensely over recent years it is evident that we are not yet taking the sport to the highest level and some of our top juniors are being encouraged to go to other clubs to achieve state and national honours. The reason for this potential exodus is the level of competition available at other, more established clubs.

TALENT IDENTIFICATION Of course not every young sailor has the potential or

desire to achieve champion status. But those who discover that they do have the potential should be able to progress as far as they are able at Hillarys. While individual national honours are a worthy end in themselves, the fact is that it’s in our interest to retain and fully develop our youth to encourage and sustain growth in the Club. Remember - every junior has the backing of a family who invariably become active members of the Club.

Of course it’s simple to announce a goal. The hard part is to put in place all the things needed to achieve it! Clearly there are resource implications and, after unanimously endorsing the principle, Management Committee is awaiting a review of these resource implications and an implementation strategy for achieving our goal of a national sailing champion within three years.

CLUB BY-LAW 4.1It has become necessary

to remind some members of the requirement when bringing their pet dogs onto Club grounds they need to remain on leash, controlled and not allowed to roam free around or into areas of the Club and that any droppings are removed immediately.

4. DOGS 4.1 Dogs are only permitted on Club grounds if on a leash and if in transit from the owners’ vehicle to boat and return to vehicle. This rule does not apply to guide dogs. The owner or person in charge of a dog shall remove such dogs droppings from Club grounds.

Instances have increased during recent times with Club Officers and staff being asked to monitor and report these instances to Management, upon which, it may become necessary for the member/owner to attend a Protocol Meeting putting their continued use of Club facilities at risk.

Please be considerate of your fellow members when attending the Club with your dogs.

AROUND THE CLUBAs we move through the summer months you will see

improvements and maintenance taking place in response to the member survey and associated comments.

Bar stools in the Members Lounge have been upgraded, additional furniture purchased, balcony areas improved, healthier choice menus and wine list revision implemented and Club grounds under a program of development and maintenance.

Two new garden beds, car park greenery, pruning of trees to maximise our ocean views and general improvements enhancing our Club are all underway.

Into next year and following on, it is planned to improve the Clubhouse entry with automatic doors installed at the front to create a better entry, especially in inclement weather.

It is also planned to expand the members restaurant westward allowing for greater seating and easier bar use.

Our membership development program bringing more members to the Club supports these improvements. The recent Discover Sailing Day was most successful with 47 new members joining our Club. Further programs are planned in the new year to attract, retain and better membership.

Further review of membership categories with possible inclusion of a transitional membership for the 25 to 35 year old demographic and a social membership category are currently being considered.

WEBSITE & FACEBOOKThe new website has received a lot of positive comment

since it went live in October. It has already proved itself as an important communication and promotional tool of the Club along with our Compass Magazine and eNewsletter.

Since going live the new look website has received 35% more visitors with increased engagement spending twice the amount of time on the site.

Complimenting the website, it is planned to introduce a Facebook page to our PR and Marketing program. Expected to be implemented nearer February or March next year, it is hoped this communication tool will further improve the promotion of the Club, awareness amongst current members and increase developing demographics.

All in all there is plenty still happening here at the Club.

CLUB UPDATE

Opening Day - 5 October 2014They say lightning doesn’t strike twice in the same place

and although not literally, it did when Hillarys Yacht Club hosted the Opening Day 2014 in October, just as it did for Bart’s Bash the fortnight earlier. Yachts were confined to pens; skippers, crews and families to the Club House.

The traditional sail-past of boats dressed to a theme, this years Disney characters, had to be cancelled as did the Commodore’s Cup Race however, this did not dampen the enjoyment for all, as children rode ponies, had their faces painted or posed with Mickey and Minnie. The adults wined, dined, regaled tall tales from yesteryear and some even danced to the music of the Replay.

On the serious side the Mayor of Joondalup, Troy Pickard opened the 2014/15 season and invited sailors, anglers, divers and power boaters that when things weren’t going exactly as they would like, as with the weather experienced, that they reflect on how fortunate we are to be able to live, work and enjoy such a magnificent coastal environment as that of the Marmion Marine Park.

Commodore Chris Grant highlighted the recent success of sailors and pointed to key events; the Discover Sailing Day and participation by HYC yachts in the Sydney to Hobart, and Fremantle to Albany races this season.

Emphasizing that Hillarys Yacht Club is a family oriented club providing a variety of water sporting and recreational opportunities with a comprehensive social and entertainment program. The Commodore thanked the dedicated volunteers and staff for their commitment to the Club.

Melbourne CupWhat a great success as always! We had more than 300

HYC members and members guests join us for the race that stops the nation.

Special thanks to the Tuesday Group – Eunice Johnson and her trusty team – a huge effort in doing the sweepstakes. And a big thank you to Living Colour for Hair for sponsoring the best dressed competition.

After months of preparation and anticipation we left

Hillarys at 9:00am on 27th June on Ficarra, a 52ft Riviera. Travelling with us was a good mate of mine Alan Tink with his 52ft Maritimo.

The plan was to be away for approximately six weeks, take our time to get to the Monte Bellos and enjoy the journey, most of the time travelling at nine knots.

We were fully loaded with fuel, water, fishing gear, diving gear and enough food and red wine to last six weeks.

First stop was Dongara, so we had a solid 22 hours at the helm and an over nighter. With an inexperienced crew and on auto pilot, and electronics system that stopped working half an hour into the trip. It wasn’t such a good start! The boat has just had new radios, stereo, electronics and various other navigation gear installed, the problem was it hadn’t been tested due to timing and now we had to solve the problem on the run.

Thanks to Justin Oliva, my daughter’s boyfriend who was with us (he’s an electronic wiz); we managed to work out that all the new gear was overloading the circuit board. A little rewiring on the go and we had it all working again, (after six hours of trial and error).

This was just one of the many trials and tribulations that we encountered on the trip.

One of the biggest issues that you have to come to grips with is that you have to learn to “live” on the boat. That means that it truly is about the journey and not the destination. While the boat is underway you have to learn how to eat, sleep, cook, go to the bathroom, have a shower, and of course fish in various types of weather conditions.

Anyway, we finally got to Dongara after being knocked over by a freak wave half way through the night, which was extremely unnerving, no real damage, just stuff thrown everywhere and a couple of people thrown out of their bunks.

We refuelled at Dongara and then out to the Abrolhos Islands for the next three days, visiting the Pelsant Group, the Easter Group and finally a night at Big Pigeon at the Wallaby Group.

We had great fishing and exploring as none of my crew on this leg had ever visited the Islands before.

We left the islands early that Friday morning about 7:00am, not knowing what we had install for us that day. The weather reports

were “ok” for our trip to Shark Bay (153 Nautical Miles- 15 knots North Westerly’s predicted).

Two-three hours into the trip the weather got really bad, we were battling 25-30 knots and 4 ½ metre swells from the North West. We finally arrived in Shelter Bay inside Shark Bay at about 5:30pm that evening, just in time to anchor up and enjoy a well earned couple of beers and share stories between boats as to where the water came in and what damage we had sustained, fortunately nothing too bad.

The next couple of days we spent in Shark Bay, Denham and Monkey Mia, picking up a couple of extra family members in Denham. Shark Bay was a real treat, great fishing, flat water, swimming with the dolphins on numerous occasions and generally a great relaxing time visiting various parts of the Bay system.

The next week or so we travelled to Carnarvon and then to Exmouth, stopping at various places along the way including Gnarloo, Coral Bay, Yardie Creek, Tandabiddi to name a few.

Travelling through the Ningaloo Reef was fantastic, dodging whales, whale sharks, turtles and various other sea life. The fishing along this stretch was whatever you wanted it to be, with tuna and Spanish mackerel coming over the side frequently.

Finding a place to anchor up at night time inside the reef was tricky at times due to a big swell running most of the time. Meaning we found ourselves surfing our way through the waves several times. Getting out in the mornings was also a challenge.

We finally got to Exmouth and this was where the family got off (except for my 24 year old son Jason) and four of my mates got on board.

more challenging over the next week or so.We headed off to the Montes from Exmouth in pretty

good weather, fishing along the way, travelling at about 8.5 knots, great travelling speed. We picked up plenty of mackerel and tuna, to the point of getting bored with it, having to stop all the time to real them in!

We spent a night anchored off Barrow Island on the

ocean side and then off to the Montes’ the next morning.We spent the next week exploring the islands, spending

a couple of nights at Brandi Bay, catching mud crabs and getting a feel for the islands. We both had 4.5 metres ribs on the boats so we used these to explore the nook and crannies of the islands.

I was surprised at the extent of the mangrove systems throughout the area and pleased because it meant we had an endless supply of mud crabs to eat.

We ended up at a place called Chanti Bay which is a great anchorage protected from just about any weather. This is next to Alpha Island, the site where the Atomic Bombs where let off in 1956. On the island there are remnants of this activity, also a sign warning that you should not spend too much time on the island.

The fishing at and around the Monte Bellos is pretty awesome, we mostly caught coral trout, red emperor, rankin cod, spanish mackerel and tuna, plus a whole lot more. Sharks were a problem a lot of the time, resulting in many fish heads being brought aboard.

We also had two large, resident groper that lived under the boat while we were there. One of the charter operations in the area had nicknamed them Kodak and Fuji. They were both big enough to swallow one of us whole. Needless to say we kept them well fed with fish carcasses and leftovers.

After a week at the islands we headed off to Dampier for a crew change. We had pretty rough weather heading out but did the trip in about six hours.

We spent a couple of days in Dampier re – provisioning with food, beer and fuel as this was the half-way point of the trip. We also had to get a refrigeration mechanic on board as the refrigeration system on board had decided it didn’t want to keep the beer cool any longer. Needless to say the boys were happy we were able to get it repaired quite easily.

The rest of the trip was all this in reverse, with a different set of crews and different set of challenges and experiences, all good fun.

Some highlights being:• Catching up with Mineral Water the 95 ft Horizon

belonging to Marc McKay while we were back at the Montes. They had just travelled from Broome on a 45 hour Stint. We helped them celebrate one of the girls 50th birthday.

• Running aground at Gnarloo (no damage)• Awesome fishing around Shark Bay & the Abrolhos

Islands.We arrived back at Hillarys Yacht Club on the 12th

August. Throughout the whole trip we had no mechanical problems, both boats travelled very well. We did about 300 hours on the motors and covered about 2,500 nautical miles at an average speed of about 9 knots, in total we used about 9,500 litres of fuel. Just about everyday we ran the boats at cruise speed of 20 knots for about half an hour just to clean them out and keep them running sweet.

In all, a great trip and a lot of fun, it might seem daunting but with the right planning and the right company, anyone with a reliable boat can do it, highly recommended.

Welcome to our new members


The concept of the Shag Island Cruising Yacht Club (SICYC) or “the Shaggers” as we’re kindly known, is to

create and maintain a network for cruising yachties and individuals who enjoy boating. It is the brainchild of Ken Thackeray, a Queenslander living in Raby Bay, Brisbane. He and his wife Rhonda are avid yachties and a more fun pair you wouldn’t find anywhere. Everyone who joins is a “Vice Commodore”. Each "Vice Commodore" representing an individual nautical location of their choice ie an island, islet, river or your favourite bay, about which they have some knowledge so as to be able to provide advice or assistance to other "Vice Commodores". However, in SICYC, your social commitments could be your most demanding responsibility.

For a one off cost of $50, you can become a Life Member. Membership includes an SICYC ‘Vice Commodore’ polo shirt, ‘Life Membership Card with member number 0010’, access to the SICYC website members area, monthly newsletters, along with discounts which are made available by a growing list of sponsor companies. There are no ongoing fees what so ever.

There is a Facebook page where people chat to each other and share their adventures on the ocean through photos and stories. The monthly newsletter also shares members’ stories, jokes and photographs.

The SICYC doesn’t have a club house, meetings, minutes or politics and our motto is “Exclusively – Non-Exclusive”.

There are a growing number of HYC members who are already Vice Commodores and various groups of Shaggers are dotted all over Australia and in ever increasing parts of the world. Most of the groups gather at their local yacht clubs for get togethers, happy hours and meals, such as what we do here at Hillarys. WA has about 45 members and we are very grateful that HYC welcomes us here.

We have a laugh and enjoy each others’ company and at

the same time share our nautical stories and knowledge. The “Westies” as we’ve come to be known as here in WA, have also gathered at HYC to welcome sailors passing through our waters on their way around Australia and also the grey nomad sailors who have sometimes been found sailing down the highway in their RV’s and caravans, gazing longingly out to sea, wondering whether they really should have sailed around instead. You just have to look up someone on the Vice Commodore data base, give them a call and see if there’s any happy hours or get-togethers happening in their area and generally there will be. There are regular happy hours in Brisbane, the main one being at Hogs Breath in Raby Bay every Wednesday and there are loads of happy hours and get-togethers happening all up and down the east coast. Just check out the Facebook page and newsletter for your nearest get-together or BBQ.

Shag Islet is situated in the Gloucester Passage in the Whitsunday region of North Queensland Australia with co-ordinates (20 03.8 S ... 48 26.5 E). It’s a small rocky islet with a beach which is exposed on the southern end on a falling tide. There is nothing on the islet except at the annual SICYC rendezvous when hundreds of "Vice Commodores” gather on the last weekend in August each year to rock and roll away 4 days of “baby boomers behaving badly”.

There are currently over 3,000 ‘Vice Commodores’ with membership in 14 countries. The SICYC is not for profit and our charity is The Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia (PCFA). Over the past four years over $82,000 has been raised for Prostate Cancer Research.

DISCOVER SAILING DAYDiscover Sailing Day held on Sunday 2nd November

was once again a successful event. We adopted the same marketing and preparation as for 2013 where HYC had the largest participation across Australia.

This year we had 406 participants with 46 families taking membership of HYC.

There were 15 members’ keelboats taking out for an experience 335 sailors’ trips. Each boat went out five times. Special thanks to Sally Coleman who designed an individual passport for each family to help control the on water experiences. This then became a take-home souvenir.

KRAKEN TO START IN THE 2014 SYDNEY TO HOBART ON BOXING DAY

Todd Giraudo’s new Sunfast 3600 is undergoing final preparation in Sydney for the Boxing Day start. Kraken will sail under the burgee of the Hillarys Yacht Club and has the sail number HY3600.

Todd has been finalising his crew; as a double handed sailor Todd has increased the crew numbers to meet the minimum allowed.

The crew has a good blend of youth and experience and could be competitive in the running conditions expected.

Whilst inclement weather has precluded a few of the CIC sailing events in the last two months, there have been plenty of social activities enabling everyone to catch up.

John and Sue organised our Annual “Train” Cruise, which was a resounding success. A group of nine cruisers caught the train to Serpentine, where they enjoyed bush walking around Serpentine Falls, had a tasty pub lunch, and visited local sites such as the Tractor museum, St Steven’s and Turner Cottage. By all accounts, it was a really relaxing and enjoyable day.

Our last meeting was swapped for a dinner at HYC with a huge attendance. The reason for this was to say goodbye to four much loved CIC members- Brendan and Jan, who have been active members of the Club for many years, and Dan and Kat, who are returning to Kat’s native New Zealand in the coming weeks. The group is very sad to be losing them, but we wish them all the very best in their new adventures.

Other news is the advent of the Cruiser’s Cup, which has been created to encourage some competition within the cruising group, by trying out racing in the keelboat section’s ‘JAM Races’. So far there has been one race, in which Brian and Rita (Sana II) won despite having only the two of them onboard, compared with many of the other vessels who had up to six crew on board- well done guys!

Lastly, we would like to welcome back Shelley and Norman, who have recently returned from sailing around Australia. They have been away for 14 months, and we are really looking forward to hearing some of their adventures- after all, cruising the world is what the CIC is all about!

DIVE UPCOMING EVENTSSection Meeting 1st Thurs of the Month at 7:30pm

On the 6 October 2014, our group of 9 sailed away to the South Pacific for 16 nights on P&O’s Pacific Pearl. The Bounty Adventure Cruise took us to New Caledonia, Fiji and Tonga. On the 2nd night (while we were all sleeping), Pacific Pearl was asked by the Australian Authorities to search for what was thought to be a flare. A ship, 38 nautical miles away sighted a flash of light (confirmed by the ship’s camera). The Captain headed their way and grid searched for 10 hours at 10 knots putting us 10 hours behind schedule. It turned out to be a false alarm. There were several meteorite sightings that night in locations around Eastern Australia and the Pacific. Captain Tony Herriott set about making up lost time allowing a quick afternoon ‘land break’ the next day in Noumea, New Caledonia’s capital city. Time enough to find Le Fournil Gourmand (French bakery), Tonton Jules Chocolate Shop and have a walk around the harbour in this ‘westernised’ city.

What did we eat on-board? When we weren’t dining at the exceptional Waterfront restaurant we indulged in some ‘Asia Fusion’ (Chinese & Thai banquets) at the

Luna; intimate Lunch and Afternoon Tea on the High Seas at celebrity chef Luke Mangan’s Salt Grill; canapés and drinks with the Captain and Officers in the Oasis and the unforgettable degustation dining experience in The Chefs Table (private wine room).

Entertainment on-board was excellent. Such a huge variety including the highlight when Pacific Circque performed on the 12th Deck on a perfect Fijian night. After very clever planning, the ship turned just before the show to zero knots of wind. We watched in amazement when the Pacific Circque performers balanced, twisted, twirled, hung, climbed and contorted under the stars. Jackie Love made a guest appearance in the Marquee Showlounge and was impressive with her outstanding voice. Linda Dunjey & I were part of Brendan Mon Tanner’s ‘Magic to the Max’ show when we were invited to the stage to help with a magic card trick. Brendan Mon Tanner then ate some fire (as you do) for the finale. Incidentally, Brendan is a Guinness World Record Holder as the fastest fire eater in the world and his record still stands!

Bounty Adventure, Pacific Blue and everything Nautical – Part 1


What do a group of divers do when they are on a cruise to Fiji? They must find somewhere to dive of course. Port Denarau, Fiji was like coming into Hillarys Boat Harbour. After some negotiations we hired a car and headed to the Intercontinental Fiji Golf Resort & Spa. Wow! This amazing resort has its own dive operation right on the tropical beach. It took 5 minutes to get to the dive site which was relaxing, easy and warm. A fair amount of tropical sea life made this an interesting and pleasurable afternoon dive before heading back to Port Denarau to catch the 2nd last tender.

Heat 4 of Pacific Popstar’s Karaoke Championship was won by Michael O’Brien. After a gruelling final, Michael was chosen to perform live on ‘The Very Last Night Show’ on the very last night. This made Michael the most famous person that Craig knew.

Bounty Adventure, Pacific Blue and everything Nautical – Part 1


DINGHY UPCOMING EVENTSSection Meeting 4th Wed of the Month at 7:00pm

Last time I wrote we were headed towards the end of winter racing and here we are now well into the new summer season.

There have some significant events undertaken with our involvement in Bart’s Bash. This worldwide sailing event held on 21 September was for Guinness World Record. Those of you participating in this race at HYC will be proud to note that our Club had the highest registered number of participants in WA and the third highest in Australia. The weather conditions were pretty extreme and racing unfortunately was called off for safety reasons. Jackson Porter did manage to get his Optimist Dinghy out of the harbour and was flying across the water but it is hard to race in one direction only and he also had to return to the shore.

Opening Day this year was actually a great success and although the weather was again unkind to us and we couldn’t get out onto the water it was a excellent day for onshore camaraderie and getting together on a social basis. Junior sailing was recognised in the Commodores speech for special development initiatives to create a National Champion from our talented sailing ranks. We have some potential champions and we wish to give them the opportunity to expand their sailing skills and head in the direction of National Champion.

Fund raising is an integral part of development of our sailors and we decided to hold a Gala Dinner with Bill Brownless as guest speaker. Paul and Sabine Wise were tireless in their efforts to make this event a success. Members and guests were treated to a fantastic night with sports memorabilia one off items being auctioned. The night raised a significant amount of money – not quite what we envisaged but a terrific result for a terrific night.

Sailing is in full swing and the numbers are growing. November 15 we hosted the WAIODA ranking regatta with our Race Management team handling on water fleet over 70 boats including Optimist sailors from many other clubs. Our Optimist sailors heading towards Nationals have

combined with SoPYC to train at HYC on Thursday and Saturday afternoons as well as offering SoPYC sailors the opportunity to race with us on Saturday mornings. Mike has done a great job and our sailors are benefitting from working with him. Our Intermediate Optimist sailors have coaching on Wednesday and Friday afternoons with Chris Kelly and we appreciate all the effort Chris contributes to Dinghy Sailing at HYC.

Discover Sailing Day was an outstanding success and I would like to thank everyone from Dinghy Division who either helped on shore or took visitors out sailing – thank you so much for a great effort . I know many of you were pretty tired after a busy day and like me you would have slept soundly that night. Thanks to everyone for a great day.

Finally I would like to thank as I try to do every week – those many volunteers who come to HYC some with a connection to a sailor or two and those who just enjoy working for Dinghy Division in making the racing a success each week. They make our sailing what it is and without them we wouldn’t be on the water enjoying our fabulous sport.

Due to unforeseen circumstances Rear Commodore Barry Garratt-Reed had to fly to Queensland unexpectedly so this issue is a short one.

The scheduled River Rally had to be cancelled but instead the Power Section enjoyed a day out on Arafura cruising the Swan River. Many thanks to John & Deanne for their hospitality.

The next section meeting is to be held on Wednesday 17th December at 7:30pm and will be combined with our Christmas party.

As we approach the busy festive season we remind all pen occupiers about the need to keep not only their own vessel and pen area neat and tidy, but also ensure that their neighbours follow suit. This includes the proper storage of water hoses, correct fixing of shore power leads (not wrapped around cleats) and not leaving jockey poles, crab nets, steps and other general items along the jetty. It is your responsibility to provide a safe passage along the jetty and fingers by removing all obstructions. If you cannot store these items on your vessel, then they must be removed as they are a hindrance in an emergency situation and may impede the immediate access to the jetty by emergency services.

Also look around your pen and if you notice ropes that are sagging into the water gathering barnacles and serve no purpose then liaise with your Jetty Representative and see if it is safe to remove them. If they are required then continual maintenance will save you time and money in the long run. Also check and see if all your weights are intact as recent jetty inspections have found a number of them missing and in some cases causing the vessel to shift in the pen and resulting in unnecessary damage to the hull.

During inspections we have also come across a number of EPIRBs that are neatly stored in their cardboard box inside a drawer or cupboard. Vessels have a tendency to sink quickly and immediate access to the EPIRB will increase your chances of survival. Please follow the manufacturer’s instruction and install it in an appropriate location.

In recent times we have seen vessels requiring salvaging due to an unforeseen malfunction whilst in the pen. It is imperative that you check your contact number listed at the jetty entrance and ensure that it is correct and is your direct contact number. These incidents usually

occur outside 9-5 and it is important that immediate contact is made with the pen occupant.

Remember that a portable bilge pump and a spill response kit are available for use by members in emergency situations. They are located in the fish cleaning area under the yachting start tower.

Finally the recent unusual weather pattern has left many boat owners with a dilemma – experiencing significantly more mould growth than usual. It’s a very real problem to contend with and no one enjoys the unsightly look of mould on their cabin walls, cushions, cupboards and exterior surfaces, not to mention the odour. Even fewer enjoy the cleaning process! Mould thrives in dark, damp, enclosed environments and the best way to fight mould onboard is to keep it from ever starting in the first place. If it has already begun, it is time to take action as it will only get worse.

KEELBOAT RACING UPCOMING EVENTSSection Meeting 3rd Wed of the Month at 7:30pm

Strong gale-force winds for Bart’s Bash and the Commodore’s Cup on Opening Day resulted in cancellation of the races however the enthusiasm of members and families was not dampened as they enjoyed many of the activities ashore dressed as characters from the world of Disney. The pirate crew of Deckchairs Overboard plundered the best-dressed award scoring a bottle of rum however the Pirates of the Caribbean and Queen of Hearts from Perle had already stolen the hearts of many.

Eleven Division 1 yachts entered the first actual race, the Marmion Reef Race, and after five hours of racing, six finished within two minutes of each other with Hard Evidence winning on handicap and Deckchairs Overboard recording fastest time. In the two Consistency races sailed so far the First 35s Haywire, Mulberry and Deckchairs Overboard have been consistent placegetters with Kraken X and Hard Evidence also taking home a pennant in Division 1. Sally Malay revelled in the stronger wind to record a win. Covert Operation continues to be the fastest boat in Division 2 however, Blue Chip and Show Me have traded first and second places in the two races. Brian and Rita Buzzard sailed Sana 11 to an impressive win in the first of the Cruiser Cup races however let’s hope conditions will be more inviting in the next Cruiser Cup race for other cruisers to participate. With the elevation of Salamander and Perle to Division 1 this season, the JAM fleet (of only two or three) would appreciate the support of those comfortable sailing with just jib and mainsail.

Of the five yachts competing with IRC ratings, Deckchairs Overboard has dominated with several first places and Haywire, Mulberry and Kraken X sharing the minor places.

The first two races of the North Coast Series were sailed in a good westerly breeze of 12-14 knots. The numeral pennant of 2 signifying 3 laps was ignored by HYC yachts as they sailed 4 laps in Division 1 leaving a headache for officials to sort out results. Good performances by Leda (ORSSC) with a first and second, a win by Missing Linck

(ORSSC) and two thirds by Pegasus (ORSSC) was not enough to overcome the consistency of the HYC yachts Deckchairs Overboard, Hard Evidence, Sublime, Show Me, Pinta, Pandora and Tropical Itch as HYC won the day 41 to 60 points. The Ocean Reef Sea Sports Club provided wonderful hospitality, thank you.

An ongoing project has been the acquisition and mounting of framed photographs of the Club Champions above the bar in the Marina Room. Have a look next time you are in there for a drink or a meal. We are, however, chasing good photos of Javansha, Strange Times, Battle Cry, Billy Cart and Without Fear to complete the full set. ■ The three first 35” get away cleanly in the second Consistency Race


Hillarys Yacht Club members were to join thousands of others around the world in Bart’s Bash Sunday September 21 to set a Guinness World Record and raise money for the Andrew (Bart) Simpson Sailing Foundation.

Prior to the start there were 35 boats registered, the largest in WA and the third largest in Australia, a great result especially as all had contributed to the fundraising efforts.

Anxious skippers and crews kept a close watch on the Bureau of Meteorology website which showed a band of rain heading towards the Club and just at race time the cold front hit with strong winds gusting to 35 knots accompanied by driving rain.

Two metre waves on a three metre swell created a sea that would challenge even the best of the Sydney to Hobart crews.

Five yachts, a diminutive Optmist, Optimum sailed by Jackson Porter, a Contender, Beak (Adam Brett) and three keel boats, Blue Chip (Keith Fisk), Sublime (John Newman) and Kraken X (Chris Kelly) ventured out to the race area only to be turned back by safety support RIBs, once the race had been called off.

ANGLING

August Boat CompetitionWith a good weather forecast, nineteen anglers (12 men,

two ladies, four juniors and one mini junior) signed on for the August competition.

At the weigh in, 11 species were recorded with all who weighed in having a whiting and most, a skippy; herring were also well represented.

Biggest fish of the day was Alan Partridge’s 868g red snapper with Julie Loran’s 734g breaksea cod and Lucas Pohl’s 697g skippy, not far behind.

Men’s winner on the day was Sean Potter, with six species, 80.194 points, followed by Alan Partridge, Denis Loran and Frank Pierucci each with four species.

Lady winner was Julie Loran with five species and 58.614 points. Janine McLeod was second with three species and 35.142 points.

Junior winner was Jake Speed , four species and 46.744 points from Lucas Pohl. Two species and 26.566 points. Photos of the winners provided by Maria Mansell.

The anglers fishing on the Club boat Balaton Jack were entertained by a pod of whales breaching and playing 20 to 30 metres from the boat.

September Boat Competition3rd Sunday postponed owing to gale forecast.4th Sunday: The weather was not much better than the

week before, but 11 intrepid anglers (five men, two ladies and four juniors) ventured out.

Nine species were recorded with one, a mackerel of 605g, caught by Sean Potter a Club record.

With six species and 72.662 points, Sean was the men’s winner. Julie Loran had four species and 46.776 points to win the ladies section, while Aiden Rinney with three species and 36.060 points won the junior section.

Julie Loran won the wheel spin with her 262g snook.

October Boat CompetitionOnce again, a bad weather forecast on the gazetted date

of 19th caused the competition to be postponed to 26th.On 26th the weather was not much better, but 14 hardy

souls ventured out, aware of the demersal ban in place, but keen to try their luck on pelagic and reef fish.

In all, eight species were weighed in with the winners being,

Mini Junior, Cameron Cox with one species, 17.250 pointsJunior, Zac Currie with four species; 45.726 pointsLady, Janine Mcleod with four species; 45.576 pointsMan, Sean Potter with four species; 47.638 pointsWinners were presented with their prizes by Rear

Commodore Ian McCall.The wheel spin was won by Kyle Neller for his 278 gram

goat fish.

Juniors’ Fishing ClinicAfter practising rod use and boat rules on Tuesday, the

22 eager young anglers boarded the Club boats in perfect weather conditions on Wednesday. It turned out to be a great day’s fishing with all catching a feed of whiting with a few herring included.

Whales breaching and playing close to the boats provided a bonus, while those on Balaton had a four metre white pointer for company for quite a while, (measurement estimated by Ian, so think 2.5m to 4.5m).

Fish of the day was a flathead weighing 2.15kg caught by Gabin Peguy. A photo of Gabin and his fish has been provided by Peter McGrady.

The weather on Thursday was far from perfect, but at the weigh in, nearly all had fish for the scales with the winner Heath Kershaw with two species (26.508 points), from Luke McDonald, two species (25.613 points).

Thanks to the Angling section volunteers who made the clinic so successful.

HYC Fatboys Thailand Bike Ride

October saw fi ve HYC Fatboys and a mutual friend travel to Thailand to participate in a 700km bike ride.

This ride was to raise funds for the research into prostate/breast cancer. I am pleased to advise over $3000.00 has been raised so far. The fi nal amount is not yet available but will be advised.

Many thanks to all HYC members and others who contributed. A special thanks goes to Vertech Group for their wonderful contribution.

A more detailed story of the bike ride and happenings will be provided at a later date.
