    Montage

Description:A spiritual montage made by blending two or more images, and the use of typography.

    Programs used:Adobe Photoshop

    Date:Octover 24, 2014

    Course # & Section:Comm 130, Section 4

    Instructor name:Brother Joel Judkins

Objective:Use the FOCUS design process with strong focal point and flow.Unify a layout with a consistent theme and dominant spiritual message.Learn to blend two or more images together gradually, using masks.Demonstrate more advanced Photoshop skills for layout with multiple elements.Use a mask to apply a filter to one part of the image.

Apply typography principles (titles, quotes, events or scripturesyour choice).Format type: Legibility; Small copy & Title with varying text size. Theme word(s).Select good quality images.

Process:I used Photoshop to combine all the images into the final product. I first put the picture of the wave as thebackground and then used a layer and a mask to fade the picture of the girl. I made sure that the opacity waslow so I didnt erase her completely. Once I liked how she looked over the first picture I had a small photoof lighting on the top right side. It was really purple so I used the color dodge tool to take out most of thepurple. I then used the mask tool to hide any hard edges. I also made a few touch ups with the levels tool.

Then to finish it up I sharpened her eyes.

    Event Ad

Description:A full-bleed color event ad using Microsoft Word.

    Programs used:Microsoft Word

    Date:October 9, 2014

    Course # & Section:Comm 130, Section 4

    Instructor name:Brother Joel Judkins

Objective:Comprehend image sizing (how pixels and inches work together).Find, scan and import a high-quality image.Create a full-bleed design.Choose a color scheme and typeface(s) that work for your message and audience.Learn to use only Word design features without using any Adobe programs, including Photoshop.

Process:Using an Epson scanner I scanned this image from People Style Watch magazine. I then opened up MicrosoftWord and made this my focal point by making it fit to the whole page. I opened up a box and filled it withblack and put it up in the top left corner. I played with it until I got the desired effect I wanted. I put the maintitle on top of the black filled box and changed it to white font. I made two other text boxes and put theinformation I wanted in them and placed them where I thought they fit best next to her body. I wanted it tohave a certain flow. The top right text sits in an almost invisible box made by the shape of her shoulder andhead. I used pdf2jpg.net to turn it into a jpg file.

Process:Once I got the design I wanted for my business cards I created my letterhead. I put the paw prints on thewhole page and lowered the opacity. I then grouped all of my information on the bottom left corner and

aligned it with the panda design directly above it. I wanted to keep it simple and cute with all the basicinformation that someone would need to know about my business.

    Brochure

Description:A two sided (duplex) folding brochure.

    Programs used:Adobe InDesign

    Date:December 6, 2014

    Course # & Section:Comm 130, Section 4

    Instructor name:Brother Joel Judkins

Objective:Set up and align a two-sided, folded document.Create an original, new logo and use it in a brochure.Incorporate quality images. Incorporate at least four quality images, not including the logo. One should beclipped in Photoshop and text-wrapped in InDesign so the text follows the cutout shape of the image.Write at least 250 words of original copy in at least three paragraphs, headers, and subheaders.

Trim for a full bleed and print in duplex (two-sided) color.

Process:Using InDesign I put together a duplex brochure. I used Illustrator to create my simple logo and then placedit into my InDesign document. In class we figured out how to fold the brochure and where to drag the rulertool in InDesign to the correct measurements. Using that layout I placed my photos where I wanted them.Three photos line up when you open and close the brochure for the full picture. I took a neutral backgroundphoto from the internet and used it for the background of both my document pages. I lowered the opacity forthe front and back pages. I took my logo and put it as a large watermark on the inside.

    Photodesign

Description:Demonstrate good photography and image editing skills. Incorporating color into a poster layout withoriginal photo.

    Programs used:Photoshop

    Date:October 17, 2014

    Course # & Section:Comm 130, Section 4

    Instructor name:Brother Joel Judkins

Objective:Learn basic photography skills.Choose a color scheme, take a photo to match those colors, then incorporate the colors into the layout.Use a digital camera to take a quality image, then download it.Adjust image levels, saturation, color balance, sharpen tool on separate layers for NDE(non-destructive editing.)Size and crop the image, then place on an 8.511 page layout.Use layers to design text, and repeating graphic elements in Photoshop.Print with full-bleed margins. Trim only 1/8 (0.125) from all four sides.

Process:I looked at the color scheme from the Visual Focus book and chose green as my color. I went to thegreenhouse and got the picture of the leaves with water on them. I focused on the leaves and blurred thebackground by using a low f/stop on my Canon EOS REBEL T3i camera. I edited the picture in Photoshopwith the level, sharpness, and color balance tools. Then I made a new document and put my picture on it.

After that I started to play around with Photoshop to get the design I ended up with. I brought in the colorwheel to get the correct colors and then used a layer mask and leaf brush tool to get the effects shown.

    Flier

Description:A promotional flier for a graduate conference in black and white.

    Programs used:Adobe InDesign

    Date:October 2, 2014

    Course # & Section:Comm 130, Section 4

    Instructor name:Brother Joel Judkins

Objective:Apply the design principles and use appropriate typography.Incorporate basic InDesign skills to improve basic flier layout.Retrieve image and logo from links on this page.Create a project folder with image, logo and InDesign document to keep links in InDesign intact.

Process:I started off by doing four different sketches to give me some inspiration. I then used one of those sketchesfor my main document. I didnt copy it exactly, but it gave me the inspiration that I needed. I then went toInDesign to put it all together. I was thinking of white space the whole time I was formatting my pictures, text, logo, and title. I wanted to make sure that there was plenty of white space. I mostly created it by usinga small body font. I thought that the title stood out well because there was good contrast with the fadedbackground, three blocks, and small subtitle. I also aligned the extra bar with the edge of the title box and thetop three boxes line up with the bottom three boxes. All of the pictures, text, and logo were provided.
