HIKOI I JOURNEY
Few would argue that Richard Nunns is one
of our most important musical ambassadors.
Rattle is extremely privileged to have had
the opportunity to capture a handful of the
extraordinary range of collaborations Richard
has either instigated or enthusiastically
participated in over the years. Despite the
relative limitations and simplicity of his unique
family of beautifully crafted instruments (the
majority of which are the work of master-carver,
Brian Flintoff), Richard consistently piques
the interest of the world’s most adventurous
musicians, composers, performers, and artists.
Born into brass bands, Richard sought refuge
in jazz and improvised music. An interest in
indigenous music came to focus on traditional
Maori instruments, and a collection of over
ninety pieces representing thirty-four distinct
types. Richard’s musical and ethno-musicological
expertise keeps him actively performing with
a considerable (and varied) range of artists in
all corners of the world, from pop to classical,
through jazz, free improv and world musics.
RICHARD NUNNS
Paul Dyne lived in Montreal, Canada from
1970 to 1980, working with numerous top
Canadian musicians as well as U.S. jazz
legends Sonny Stitt (alto sax) and Pepper
Adams (baritone sax). Since returning to
New Zealand in 1980, Paul has played on an
array of radio programmes and albums. He
remains a first choice for visiting international
artists, which have included Lee Konitz, Emily
Remler, Bruce Forman, Bill Cunliffe, Ralph
Sutton, Bobby Shew, Mike Nock, Andrew
Hill, Darrell Grant, Scott Hamilton, and many
others. Between 1989 and 2002, Paul
was the Head of Jazz at the New Zrealand
School of Music. He continues to be a vital
presence within the Wellington jazz scene.
