Guided holidaysOur guided walking holidays make sure you getthe most out of your stay in the Pyrenees. Ourteam of qualified guides have a superb knowledgeof the local area. We can take you straight to themost beautiful spots, many of which are off thebeaten track and often we'll have the mountainsto ourselves.

Small group holidaysOur policy of only taking small groups means you’llnever be in a long line of walkers. It also gives usthe flexibility to alter the itinerary according to thegroups needs and is key to us giving you a fantasticweek of walking.

Walking gradesWe offer four grades of walking holidays withitineraries to suit all levels of walkers.

Dual Level WalkingOur dual level holidays are very popular. On thesewe offer two guided walks each day - a shorteroption and a longer harder day in the mountains.

We talk through the walks for the following day inthe evening and each morning you can decidewhich walk you’d like to join.

Dual level holidays are perfect if you’re not surewhich level would suit you best, if you’d like to doa couple of longer days but don’t want to committo a whole week of hard hikes or for couples orfriends that walk at differing levels.

Our Valle de Tena Explorer (page 12) and DiscoverOrdesa (page 22) holidays offer dual level walking.

Grade 1: Relaxed

Walks: 5-7 hoursAscent: 300-600 metresPaths: Good paths, not steep

Walks are at a relaxed pace (we’re big fans of twolunch breaks!) and there’s plenty of time to take inthe scenery around you. Paths are good and nottoo steep.

We’ll pass through areas with superb flora. Ifyou’re a fairly fit and active person these walksshould be fine for you.

Grade 2: Moderate

Walks: 6-8 hoursAscent: 450-750 metresPaths: Good paths with some steeper sections

Walks are still at a relaxed pace and on good pathshowever we tackle some steeper sections. Theascents are a bit longer and we’ll take in somesummits.

Again this grade of walking should be fine for anyreasonably fit and active person.

Grade 3: Strenuous

Walks: 7-10 hoursAscent: 700-1000 metresPaths: Rocky, steeper paths

For those that like long days in the highmountains. These routes are steep in places andwe venture into much rockier and rougher terrain. Some routes have sections of easy scrambling.

A good level of fitness and some previous hikingexperience is required for these hikes.

Grade 4: Challenging

Walks: 7-10 hoursAscent: 700-1500 metresPaths: Steep!

Tough overnight hikes staying in mountain huts(refugios). These routes take you into highmountain terrain on steep rocky paths. Althoughthe days are not much longer than grade 3 we arein more remote terrain for several days at a time.

A good level of fitness and previous hikingexperience is essential for this hikes.

See page 26

Which is best for me?The Valle de Tena and Ordesa National Park bothoffer fantastic walking but the terrain varies in thetwo areas.

The Ordesa National Park is stunning withkilometre deep canyons and cliffs. There are walksof all levels in the park from very gentle through tostrenuous hikes including some vertiginous cliffhugging paths. However the peaks in the park arenot accessible to day hikers as they’re too high.

If you like reaching peaks then the Valle de Tenawould suit you best. There are some superbsummits to be reached here - some easy and somelong days involving scrambling. The Valle de Tenaalso has excellent meadows, lakes and access tocultural walks passing medieval villages andmonasteries for those that prefer gentler walks.

The Camino de Santiago offers a very differentcoastal walking experience with beaches, cliffs andgreen rolling hills.

Valle de Tena Self GuidedThe mix of peaks, lakes and meadowsare a walkers paradise with a hugechoice of routes for levels. We’ll get youstraight to the best of them with ourmaps and advice. Choice of two villageswith hotel and self catering options.

Valle de TenaFrom it’s alpine meadows to it’s rockythree thousand metre peaks the Vallede Tena really does have walks to suiteveryone.

Deep wooded valleys with streamsand waterfalls give way to bare rockyhigh mountain scenery as you climbtowards the summits.

The valley stretches twenty kilometres from thecliffs of the Sierra de Partacua and Tendeñera northto the French border and is flanked by numerouspeaks on each side. Several deep sided valleysmean you’ll discover new views with each corneryou turn.

Traditional mountain villages with stone housesand winding streets are nestled amongst themountains and our Village to Village self guidedholiday stays in some beautiful tranquil spots.

9

Biescas - lively villageAt the southern end of the Valle de Tena, Biescas isperfectly positioned to reach several excellent anddiverse walking areas including the Valle de Tenaand the Ordesa Valley.

Biescas makes a great base if you’d like to do a mixof walking during your week - a few higher peaksup the valley, some gentler walks between semi-abandoned villages with Romanesque churchesand a day over in the Ordesa Valley. It’s also anexcellent option early or late in the season as thereare excellent hikes south of Biescas which stay dryif the weather’s not so great further up the valley.

At the heart of the village is the plaza - the centreof every Spanish village. Surrounding the plaza areseveral bars, cafes and restaurants. There are a fewshops and all of the amenities you’ll need.

Sallent de GállegoScenic mountain villageNestled under the high peak of Foratata, Sallent deGállego is everything you imagine a mountainvillage to be. As you wander through it’s maze ofnarrow streets you get constant views of themountains that surround you. With it’s twelfthcentury church and old stone houses Sallent deGállego is very picturesque.

There are several excellent walks that leavestraight from the hotel. Although there are severalgood shorter walks in the area, Sallent de Gállegocomes into it’s own for walkers who want tosummit some of the higher peaks in the valley withlots of superb challenging routes on it’s doorstep.

Alpine meadowsWide flower-filled meadows lye under impressivecliffs and are perfect for walkers who prefer gentlerdays without forsaking wonderful scenery andviews.

Great walks follow bubbling mountain streamswith waterfalls cascading down the sides of thevalleys, others lead to mountain lakes or throughwonderful beech and silver fir woods.

Challenging peaksOne of the reasons we love the Valle de Tena is thehuge choice of peaks it offers to day hikers. Thereare dozens of peaks between two and threethousand metres all with fantastic views.

These hikes range from fairly gentle 5 or 6 hourround trips to some really big ascents up threethousand metre peaks and into wild highmountain scenery.

The pointy summit of Pico Anayet is one of ourfavourites. It looks impossible when you first see itbut an ingenious path - helped by a chain acrossone section - guides you quickly to the top forbirds eye views across the valley.

ButterfliesThe quantity of wild flowers in the Pyreneesmeans plenty of butterflies too. Swallowtails, RedAdmirals and Camberwell Beauties are amongthe bigger and more spectacular species that wesee. Often dozens of small but brightly colouredblues rise up as we pass through puddles inwhich they are feeding.

The Apollo (pictured) has delicate nearlytranslucent wings. The Ordesa authorities areworried about the parks population but it thrivesin several areas of the Valle de Tena. It’s one ofour favourites.

They were reintroduced in 1948 as a food sourcefor golden eagles by French hunters - the eagleswere taking too many chamois.

With a lack of natural predators the populationhas exploded to over 10,000 from an initialrelease of just 400.

Dramatic Canyon WalkingThe four deep canyons of the park offer dramaticwalking and each canyon has trails of all lengthsand difficulties.

We offer guided and self guided holidays fromHotel Ordesa just outside Torla. It’s in a perfectposition to explore the Ordesa Valley and thewestern side of the park.

There’s a wonderful variety of hiking from walks atthe bottom of the canyon to the alpine meadowssurrounding Bujaruelo. Several walks leave directlyfrom the hotel.

The Añisclo Canyon also lies within the park. Evendeeper than Ordesa this canyon is river formedrather than glacial and has a very differentcharacter.

Established in 1918 the ParqueNacional de Ordesa y Monte Perdido isSpain’s first national park and anundisputed highlight of the Pyreneeswith some of the most magnificentscenery in Europe

Kilometre deep canyons are carved into thelimestone and lye beneath snowcapped peaks. Atthe centre of the park lies Monte Perdido - thethird highest summit in the Pyrenees. Anotherdozen three thousand metre summits are strungalong the French border along with the famouspass of Breche de Roland.

In 1997 the park was made a UNESCO worldheritage site for it’s incredible diversity of flora andfauna. If you’re a nature lover you’ll love the parkwhich is famous for it’s birds of prey and one of thefew remaining homes of the lammergeier - one ofthe largest vultures in Europe.

The second option will be a grade 3 or 4 hike onone of the spectacular high level paths the park isfamous for. These hikes will be six tonine hours with six hundred to a thousand metresof ascent so a good level of fitness is required.

The last IbexSadly something you won’t see is the PyreneanIbex. These magnificent member of the goatfamily had huge curved horns and were oncefound throughout the Pyrenees. By the early1900’s over hunting (there horns were prized byhunters) had reduced the population to just oneherd in the Ordesa National Park.

By 1990 only ten individuals remained andtragically during a storm in 1998 the last knownfemale was killed by a falling tree in the areaaround the Faja de Pelay. The species becameextinct shortly after.

The ‘faja’ paths of OrdesaOrdesa is famous for it’s faja’s. The cliffs of thevalley are limestone and as it’s eroded, naturalledges have been carved into the cliffs creatingspectacular paths.

The infamous Faja de las Flores is a vertiginousmetre wide ledge a kilometre up that’s only forthose with an excellent head for heights.

Other paths are less intimidating and the Faja dePelay on the southern cliffs and the little walkedbut highly recommended Faja Racon are two ofour favourites.

World Heritage SiteOrdesa was made a UNESCO world heritage site in1997 mainly due to it’s bio-diversity. The steepcliffs lead to an altitude change of two kilometresbetween the valley meadows and the peaks highabove.

These differences mean a huge variety of flowers, birds and mammals can find their niche andflourish. Humans have made little impact on theinhospitable higher plateaus.

The UNESCO site is jointly managed with theFrench Parc National de Pyrenees.

Hotel Almud in Sallent works well combined withHotel Ordesa. It’s a scenic one hour drive betweenthe hotels when you change venues midweekwhich means you still have time to do a hike thatday.

You can split the week however as you like andprices are pro-rata the weekly rates.

The Pre-PyreneesThe deep gorges and towering cliffsofthe Pre-Pyrenees have a completelydifferent feel from the main rangealthough they are just forty kilometressouth.

Our holidays here explore two areas -the Sierra de Guara Park and Mallos deRiglos. Its warm climate makes itperfect for early season hiking.

Tranquil and unpopulated a traditionalway of life continues here with smallfarms producing cheese, wine, olive oiland almonds - all delicious!

The range was the frontline for manyyears during the ‘reconquista’ and thearea is steeped with history with bothChristian and Moorish castles dottingthe landscape.

29

AlquezarIn the 9th century the Moors recognised this spotsurrounded by deep ravines as the ideal place tobuild a castle to defend against the early Christiankingdoms. The villages name is derived from‘Al’Qasr’ the Moorish word for castle.

The Christians conquered the village in 1067 andover time the castle became the collegiate churchof Santa Maria which now overlooks the windingstreets of Alquezar.

Alquezar is a beautiful village with most of the

buildings dating back to the 16th century andmade of stone, brick and clay.

The shops sell local honey, cheese, olive oil andwine and there are several of bars with scenicterraces to take in an after hike drink.

Sierra de GuaraThis national park lies at the southern edge of thePyrenees. Its soft limestone means its riddled withgorges and we visit two of the most spectacular -the Veros and Mascun gorges on our Riglos &Alquezar holiday.

The high cliffs of the gorges make excellentroosting spots for birds of prey and the park ishome to lammergeier and large colonies of griffonvultures.

Its one of the best areas in Europe for canyoning -the adventure sport where you don wetsuit, helmet and harness and follow a river jumping, abseiling and sliding down waterfalls on the way -great fun!

Perfect early season hikingThe climate here is much more Mediterraneanwith olive and almond groves and temperaturesare perfect for early season hiking.

Our holidays here are in April and May while themain Pyrenees range is still covered in snow and itsthe perfect place to enjoy warm spring sunshine.

Los Mallos de RiglosThe remarkable cliffs of Riglos rise majestically overthe surrounding land providing a perfect home forvultures and a world famous climbing venue.

However paths accessible to all walkers wind highup above the cliffs giving us hikers wonderfulviews. It’s difficult to stop staring upwards at thetowering cliffs - and the crazy climbers hanging offthem - as we walk.

The river Gallego flows under the cliffs and it’swhite water is one of the best rafting venues in thePyrenees.

In addition to Riglos there is also excellent hikingaround the Mallos de Aguero and the Sierra deSanta Domingo where the now abandoned villageof Salinas once produced salt for the area.

Riglos & Alquezar

Wonderful hiking amongst thecanyons of the Sierra de Guara and theamazing cliffs of Mallos de Riglos.

The warm weather of the pre-Pyreneesmakes this the perfect place to hikeearly in the season.

Charming hotelsYou’ll stay in two charming hotels during theweek. Both are small and friendly in greatlocations. The bedrooms are beautifully decoratedand have fantastic views.

Hotel Real Posada de Liena is our base in Murillo deGallego where you can watch the cliffs of Riglosglow red in the setting sun from your window orthe terraza. The hotels restaurant serves deliciousfood cooked by our hosts Carmen and Jose.

In Alquezar we’ll stay at Hotel Castillo which onceagain has wonderful views. Here we’ll eat out inone of Alquezar’s restaurants each night.

30

Moderate walkingThe hikes will be mid level and each day we expectto walk around 10 to 12 kilometres with 400-650metres of ascent.

The paths are generally good although there are afew steeper sections. Although both areas arefamed for cliffs and gorges none of the hiking is onexposed narrow paths.

History and natureThe history of the area stretches back 5000 yearswith Neolithic cave paintings around Alquezar. The Moors and Christians fought over the area inthe middle ages and the castles and churches ofthe area have many Moorish influences. On the

rest day we visit the 11th century Loarre castle.

Phil guides this week himself and isknowledgeable about the areas history as well asthe flora and fauna.

- 7 night guided walking holiday

- Grade 2 - moderate hiking

- Spectacular gorges and cliffs

- 2 centre holiday

The ‘bone breaker’The Sierra de Guara is home to Europe’s rarestvulture - the Lammergeier. With a hugewingspan of up to 1.8 metres the Lammergeiermakes for a magnificent sight.

It feeds almost exclusively on bone marrow, dropping bones from a great height to smashthem on the rocks below which it then swallows.Their strong stomachs grind up the bones andthey digest the marrow. This unusual feedingbehaviour gives rise to its Spanish name -Quebrantahuesos - the ‘bone breaker’.

“If you love hill walking and loveSpanish food, wine and culture -this is the trip for you!

Well organised with a verypersonal touch. Brilliant.”

Navarra & the Basque Country

3

BaztanWandering around the villages of Baztan you feellike you are in a land that time forgot. Thesevillages haven’t changed for centuries and neitherhas the pace of life. The tranquil village of Erratzuis the perfect place to relax and wind down.

The fourteenth century former cider making houseCasa Rural Etxebeltzea is our base.

This is a landscape of green rolling hills rather thancraggy summits with a unique charm and sense ofhistory.

Although it lies in Navarra the area is traditionallyBasque and this is the culture and language thatpermeates the valley.

The Basque Country - a land steepedin tradition and history. Here thePyrenees rise from the coast creatingforest filled valleys before green rollinghills give way to the first rocky summitsof the range.

The region has so much to discover -from it’s rocky coastline to it’sdelightful villages dotted amongst thelandscape.

The area is full of history. Neolithicdolmens stand on remote summitsand pilgrims have walked the dramaticcoastline for a thousand years on theirway to Santiago.

We’ve selected three areas that show you the bestthis region has to offer. The valleys of Baztan andSalazar are where we base our guided WesternPyrenees holiday while the Camino de Santiagonorthern route follows the coast.

The Camino de SantiagoThe northern route of the Camino de Santiagofollows the rugged Basque coastline.

There’s no walk quite like the Camino - with everystep you feel the history of the walk and everyhamlet you pass has carvings, ermitas andreminders of the route’s long history.

The Northern Route is a beautiful alternative that isless walked than the traditional French route fromSaint Jean Pied de Port.

Our route takes in a manageable one week sectionof the Camino starting at the French border andpassing surf beaches, cliffs and fishing villagesbefore heading inland to finish in Gernika - sceneof the bombing in 1937 that led to Picasso’spainting of the same name.

“Amazing week with HikePyrenees! The mountains, theguides and the spirit of our groupwere just lovely. Very wellorganised trip.”Sarah

33

Valle de SalazarA lush valley where limestone ridges and peaksrise above you. The first two thousand metresummits of the Pyrenees can be found here.

Irati - one of the largest broad leafed forests inEurope - lies at the northern end of the valley. Ona misty morning it feels magical to walk betweenthe huge beeches and firs.

The village of Ezcaroz in the centre of the valley isthe perfect spot to explore the diverse nature ofthe valley and on our hikes here we’ll climb peaks, follow ridges as well as walk amongst the woodsof Irati

Page 34: Hike Pyrenees 2015 walking holiday brochure

Camino de Santiago - coastal route

34

The Scallop ShellThe scallop shell is the symbol of the Camino andyou’ll see it carved on buildings, painted onsignposts and carried by pilgrims. There arevarious versions as to the origins of the symbol. One legend tells of St James’ body beingshipwrecked off the coast of Spain andmiraculously washed onshore covered in scallopshells.

The shell is also a metaphor with the groovesreaching a central point just like the pilgrims. Italso had practical uses with pilgrims using theshell as a plate or to collect water.

Follow in the footsteps of pilgrims thathave walked the route for over athousand years.

A wonderful walk along the Basquecoastline discovering fishing villagesand beaches around each corner.

The Coastal CaminoThe Northern or Coastal Way follows the Basquecoastline with it’s beaches, cliffs and fishingvillages. Pilgrims have walked these paths for athousand years on their way to Santiago andthere’s a fantastic feeling of history as you pass bypilgrim shrines and churches that have been therefor centuries.

The Northern route is the undiscovered gem of theCamino and a beautiful alternative to thesometimes crowded French route starting in St.Jean Pied de Port. You still get all of the feeling ofthe Camino de Santiago but with the advantage ofbeautiful coastal views, empty paths andcharming accommodation.

The week starts in Hondarribia - a medieval walledtown on the French border and ends in historicGernika. On the way you’ll discover the best of theBasque Country - cliffs, beaches, green hills, vineyards and beautiful countryside.

- Walk 6 days of the Camino

- Self guided coastal walking

- Delicious Basque cuisine

- Great hotels along the route

- Luggage moved each day

Superb AccommodationWe’ve searched out the best accommodationthroughout the trip. You stay in charming guesthouses in beautiful rural locations surrounded byvineyards and countryside as well as beach fronthotels. All rooms are en-suite. This is not a tripwhere you’ll be staying in packed pilgrim hostels.

Our favourite is Antsotegi in Markina. Thismedieval blacksmiths has been wonderfullyconverted keeping the water wheel and ancientstone walls.

Evening meals are included on 3 nights. The othernights you can choose to eat at a variety ofrestaurants or tapas bars - the Basque Country isfamous for its cuisine and there is plenty of choiceto suit any budget. We provide details of localrestaurants in our information pack.

Mid level hikingThe stages of the Camino de Santiago arereasonably long with between 12 and 25kilometres walked each day. Although the highestpoints during the week are only 500 metres theroute - like most coastal paths - undulates and theaccumulated ascent adds up at the end of the day.

However the paths are excellent and you cover thedistance much quicker and easier than you wouldon our more mountainous routes in the Valle deTena or Ordesa. Ascents and descents are fairlygentle and not knee crunching.

Several of the days have options to shorten theroute by taking a taxi some of the way and we canorganise taxis for you if required.

Casa EtxebeltzeaThis fourteenth century traditional cider househas been converted into a really special place tostay.

Although it’s a large house there are just sixbedrooms - all en-suite. A huge lounge stands atthe centre of the house where you can relax inthe evenings.

The breakfast room contains the old stone ‘pit’where apples were crushed underfoot and thegreat wooden screws that squeezed the juiceout of them to make the cider.

Discover the history, culture andtraditions of two valleys of the westernPyrenees. This is a land that time forgotwith idyllic hamlets nestling under thepeaks.

Wonderful hiking along limestoneridges, through beech forests and upto summits with panoramic views.

Two charming villagesThis holiday is split between two beautiful villages- Ezcaroz in the Valle de Salazar and Erratzu inBaztan.

Both are tranquil traditional villages with cobbledstreets, stone houses and fronton courts. The pinkgranite houses of Erratzu are particularlyphotogenic.

The two locations give us an excellent choice andvariety of hikes with the rounded very reachablesummits of Baztan in contrast with the more rockylimestone peaks we’ll find in Valle de Salazar.

Navarra and the Basque Country are steeped inculture and history and Javier, our native Basqueguide, will tell you the story of this fascinating landduring the week.
