TIMELINE
Highway 1 Alignment & Area Network, Highways 842 to 797, Planning Study

Ultimately, in the very long-term, the region east of Calgary will need more than the present Highway 1 corridor to support future growth and traffic volumes and to maintain mobility between regions.
This study was commissioned to:
Define the long-term (100 year) road network to support transportation needs east of Calgary.
Establish a transportation plan that is shared and protected by the province and the three municipalities.
WHY IS STUDY REQUIRED?

FUTURE FREEWAY
Alberta Transportation is developing plans to upgrade Highways 1 & 22X to freeway standards:
To more safely accommodate future traffic flows.
To protect lands required for future highway upgrading.
What is a Freeway?
Freeways are free-flow highways.
Access to freeways is via interchanges only.
All traffic signals, intersections and driveways are
removed.
Freeways serve inter-regional and high volume traffic.

The second open house was held to solicit input regarding a preliminary highway network plan.
The open house was advertised in the media, and notices were mailed to potentially affected landowners.
Approximately 164 people attended. 113 completed questionnaires were received at or following the open house.

12
Strathmore is the only low-speed signalized section of Highway 1 between Calgary and Saskatchewan without a Bypass Plan in place.
Short-term objective for the highway network is a Strathmore bypass.
Long-term objective is to upgrade the Highway 1 corridor to freeway standards.
EXISTING HIGHWAY 1 THROUGH STRATHMORE

13
UPGRADE THROUGH STRATHMORE Upgrading existing Highway 1 through Strathmore would introduce the following impacts and issues: Significant property and business impacts.
Noise and aesthetic issues associated with the 110 km/h posted speed.
Traffic circulation issues with only one north-south crossing in town.
First intersections along Highway 817 would be located a minimum of 600m south of Highway 1.
First interchange west of town would be located at Highway 24, limiting access to future development and growth.

14
Establishing freeway standards along a bypass route and retaining existing Highway 1 in town as a municipal road may introduce several benefits, including:
Town could redevelop the present highway into a business friendly, more aesthetically pleasing, local road.
Local residents could more easily access local business, with several connections to the commercial area.
New business corridor could more easily support various transportation modes.
No disruption of existing businesses along Highway 1 (compared with upgrading to freeway standards through town).
