Indian scientists have formulated an Ayurvedic drug to cure dengue, claimed to be the first in the world, and the medicine is likely to be available in the market by next year. The Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences (CCRAS), an autonomous body under the Ministry of AYUSH and ICMR’s, regional research centre in Belgaum in Karnataka, have already conducted pilot studies which have proved the clinical safety and efficacy of the drug. “This drug has been made with seven herbal ingredients which are in use in Ayurveda system of medicine since centuries. Dengue is emerging as a major health problem in tropical countries and is drawing the attention of government and all health agencies due to its fatality and limitations of treatment in conventional system”, Professor Vaidya K S Dhiman, Director General of CCRAS said. Dengue is caused by the aedes aegypti mosquito which breeds in clean water. The symptoms of dengue include high fever, joint pains, headache, nausea, vomiting, dip in blood pressure along with a characteristic skin rash. Though the fever does not last beyond a week, in some cases there is severe drop in the level of platelets which turn fatal. At present, there is no specific drug or antibiotic to treat dengue and the treatment focuses on providing relief from the symptoms. Rest and fluid intake for adequate hydration is important. AYURVEDIC DENGUE CURE: INDIAN SCIENTISTS CREATE FIRST OF ITS KIND DRUG TO TREAT THE DISEASE

AT $69 BILLION, INDIA TOPS WORLD REMITTANCES IN 2017  India has retained its position as the top remittances receiving country with its diaspora sending about USD 69 billion back home in 2017, the World Bank said today. Remittances to India picked up sharply by 9.9 percent to USD 69 billion in 2017, reversing the previous year’s dip, but were still short of USD 70.4 billion received in 2014. Paymentsfrom immigrants back to their home countries rebounded to reach a new record in 2017 but the costs of transferring funds also increased, the World Bank said in a report. Source: PTI

INDIA'S TOP TECH COMPANY IS WORTH $100 BILLION India's biggest tech company has broken the $100 billion barrier. Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) saw its market capitalization cross the milestone for the first time, the first Indian company to do so in at least a decade and only the second ever. Reliance Industries, the conglomerate owned by India's richest man Mukesh Ambani, achieved a market capitalization of $100 billion back in 2007, according to FactSet data, but has since slipped back a bit. Relianceis now worth about $89 billion. The company's shares surged more than 4% to take its value past the $100 billion-mark, but they shed most of those gains to close narrowly higher in Bombay. That left its market value at $99 billion. TCS is part of the Tata Group, another of India's big conglomerates that sells everything from cars to salt and owns iconic global brands like Jaguar Land Rover. Source: CNN

Foreign tourists, except those from Pakistan, China and Afghanistan, would now be allowed to visit some of the most pristine locations of the country which, so far, were out of bounds for them without a special permit. The Home Ministry has decided to relax the six-decade-old Protected Area Permit regime from Nagaland, Mizoram and Manipur for five years with effect from April 1, a ministry official said. Under the Foreigners (Protected Areas) Order, 1958, all areas falling between the Inner line and the International Border of some states were declared as protected areas. The protected areas currently include whole of Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland and Sikkim, besides parts of Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand and Jammu and Kashmir. In cases of the citizens of Afghanistan, China and Pakistan and foreign nationals of Pakistani origin, no permit, however, can be issued without the prior approval of the Union Home Ministry. The combination of traditional and modern health care against the backdrop of rich cultural heritage make it a growing tourist attraction”, Manas Pattanaik, Director General, Ministry of Tourism, India said. With a larger number of hospitals receiving accreditation from the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare Providers (NBAH), health care packages are being provided to foreign patients. ALIEN LIFE PROOF?  SCIENTISTS FIND THREE TYPES OF BACTERIA NOT FOUND ON EARTH

The experts believe the remarkable discovery could go some way to proving life exists beyond earth. The bacteria was found in experiments conducted by the Indian Space Research Organisation. Astrophysicist Jayant V. Narlikar made the revelation at a space science conference. Professor R. K. Chaudhury, of the Indian Institute of Astrophysics, told Sputnik: “Detection of extraterrestrial bacteria highlights the possibility of life beyond earth and it is good news for humanity. With these findings, Indian study in the field of extraterrestrial investigations can be said to have reached a competitive stage in the global arena.Extraterrestrial life could exist because the basic building blocks of life might be present in some of the celestial bodies in other galaxies. With modern technological advancement, we will be able to provide conclusive evidence for the presence of life outside the confines of the earth in the near future.” This is not the first time a discovery from space has suggested life elsewhere in the galaxy. BANGLADESH EMERGES LARGEST IMPORTER OF INDIAN COTTON Bangladesh has emerged as the biggest importer of Indian cotton this season. It imported around 21 lakh bales of cotton from India overtaking China, which was largest importer of Indian cotton until now. For many seasons, China has remained the largest importer of cotton from India and has imported around 17-18 lakh bales during any given season. However, for the past couple of seasons, China has not been importing much cotton because of large reserves of the crop within the country itself. In the last two seasons, China has imported some 19 lakh bales of cotton. Bangladesh, on the other hand, has imported around 36 lakh bales during this period. Cotton is exported from India via Kolkata port and the road route from Benapole. Source: Financial Express
