If you enjoy a good old - fashioned country show, then we have three on offer in March. Robertson, Moss Vale and Camden Shows will provide all the excitement of large regional shows with the usual line up of interesting agricultural attractions as well as novelty events and sideshows.

An annual ‘standout’ festival in the Southern Highlands is Brigadoon in Bundanoon. Held each year in April, the gathering of the clans means that festivities will include a street parade, massed pipe bands, dancing, games, displays and more. All to celebrate this important Scottish event!

The Robertson Railway Committee will host a Vintage and Classic Car Day during April. The day will be made special with displays of restored and functioning vintage and working machinery.

The annual Thirlmere Festival of Steam, now in its 23rd year, is bigger and better than ever! Organising committee Chairman Peter Berriman said, “You really can ‘go loco for a day!’ This is the big day, as Thirlmere village comes alive with steam machinery and historic vehicles, food, music, entertainment, market stalls,

amusement rides, model rail displays, and of course the gala street parade. And it’s a great day to visit Trainworks to experience a living museum amongst the largest display of heritage trains in NSW.”

“You can enjoy a wide selection of eateries, and let the kids ‘go loco’ on the mini steam train rides. All the fun fair rides will be there, or perhaps a Harley trike ride or helicopter joy flight is more your style. There’ll be music in the park all day, showcasing our local musical talent, and you can browse over 150 market stalls. Make sure you get your spot for the gala street parade at 1 pm and bring your camera too.”

Roundabout the House

The Bowral Autumn Music Festival is now well established as a significant event in the musical and cultural life of the Southern Highlands. The Sixth Annual Festival “Venetian Grandeur” will feature music of some of the greats of Venice such as Gabrieli, Albinoni, Monteverdi and Vivaldi, brought to life by leading ensembles including Maria Lindsay’s Lurline Chamber Orchestra, Capella Sublima and Paul Goodchild’s Sydney Brass.

This year’s festival will include two organ recitals – the ‘Young Organist Recital’ on Friday at 4.30pm and on Saturday at 2.30pm Martin Rein will present a work by the Italian composer Enrico Bossi on organ and Bach’s ‘Italian Concerto’ on harpsichord.

Come and enjoy the sounds of the beautifully restored organ at St Jude’s Church Bowral. A Monteverdi ‘Mass’ will be sung at the Festival service on Sunday at 10am.

Friday’s opening concert (1pm) will be held at the Empire Cinema in Bowral and the Saturday morning concert (11am) will be held at the Mittagong Playhouse. All other concerts will take place in the historic surroundings of the Church of St Simon and St Jude in Bowral.

Join us at the 2012 Festival and enjoy up to seven concerts over three days of wonderful chamber music.

Full details of this year’s programme are available on the website – www.bowralautumnmusicfestival.org. au. Tickets for the entire Festival or individual concerts are available at the Mittagong Tourism Information Centre – phone (02) 4871 2888.

The Moss Vale Show will go on, rain or shine, for the 126th time this year. To celebrate, the organisers have invited the blokes from The Lumberjack Show to join us. They will be performing their hilarious and daring show twice each on Friday and Saturday and once on Sunday. They have had great success at the Canberra Show and the Sydney Royal Show and we’re really looking forward to seeing them in high-flying action. This is definitely one show that you and your kids will rave about for months.

The Moss Vale Show has a long tradition of bringing the best of

our region together to showcase our combined talents and skills. It isn’t just for primary producers or horse enthusiasts. If you haven’t entered anything in the Show before, you might like to try your hand at woodwork, cake baking or needlework in the pavilion. If you’ve got kids, encourage them to enter the Lego creation, handwriting or art classes.

The Young Farmer’s Challenge might be more your scene or even the Demolition Derby. There is always much to learn and plenty of reasons to smile at the Show. Come one, come all. It’s your show; enjoy it!

Bundanoon is BrigadoonThis is Scotland with a “wee” bit of “Aussie Flavour” 21st April 2012

Australia’s premier Scottish Gathering – Brigadoon – will again weave its magic, at Bundanoon

Be prepared to have your blood stirred and spine tingled as the mist rolls back to the skirl of bagpipes and the village becomes Brigadoon for the day.

Once again, Highlander, Celtic Rock Band, is bringing its unique sound to the gathering, this five piece group has a unique sound which has been wowing audiences of all ages with their electrifying high-energy music.

The Street Parade starts at 9.30am and features some 23 Pipe Bands from all over the State.

The Opening Ceremony begins at 10.30am on the Oval and the Gathering is officially opened by the Chieftain of the Day.

Spectators are treated to a spectacular Massed Pipes and Drums display of highland music. With the swirling of a myriad of coloured tartans and accompanying music that stirs the heart, it makes you proud to wear the Kilt of your ancestors.

At the Oval there are over 120 specialist stalls, selling everything imaginable, from Scottish pies to shortbread, from Clan memorabilia to souvenirs, with copious amounts of burgers, steaks and a variety of food promoting every nationality, even the Scots favourite “Haggis”.

Everyone is made most welcome at the gathering and encouraged to participate in the “Traditional” and not so “traditional” games.

Throughout the day you can enjoy Highland and Scottish Country dance demonstrations and at irregular intervals the Pipe Bands entertain the crowds with their own special individual styles of music and display marching.

Heavy ChampionshipThis year the Brigadoon Challenge will again consist of three events. 1. Heavyweight Caber 2. Tossing the weight over the bar for height & 3. Throwing the weight for distance.

Using a points system the overall winner of these events wins the Brigadoon Challenge.

One of the main events of the day is the display of strength by David Huxley, Australia’s world heavy events champion and his Tartan Warriors. These giants of men compete in a competition to lift the “Bundanoon Stones of Manhood”.

As the day of festivities comes to an end, the crowds are once again treated to the spectacle of the Massed Bands which is followed by the lone piper and a closing address by the Chieftain.

Goulburn is a thriving rural and commercial centre and offers country style living and hospitality.

The city is rich in heritage and natural beauty and any visitor interested in the history and development of this beautiful city will be delighted during guided and self guided tours of historic sites, homesteads, cathedrals, cemeteries and points of interest.

The first white explorers sited the land that was to become the first inland city from Mt. Towrang in 1798, but it was not explored until some 20 years later. Governor Macquarie declared it the Goulburn plains in 1820. Land seekers settled the area from 1818 onwards.

By 1841 Goulburn had a population of some 1,200 people - a courthouse, police barracks, churches, hospital, post office and was the centre of a great sheep and farming area. It became an administrative centre for the district taking in surrounding townships for the new County Argyle. It is home to the Big Merino & the NSW Police Academy and its secondary industry is based on a mix of private and Government enterprise.

In the private sector, firms are engaged in wool scouring, cotton products, footwear, heavy and light engineering, building related undertakings, retail distribution and concrete products.

The Goulburn Rose Festival is in its 19th year and will be held on Saturday and Sunday March 10-11 at the Goulburn Soldiers Club.

On Saturday 10th the Official Opening will be by Jennie Churchill who is a Garden Author and TV Presenter.

The Rose Festival is open Saturday 11am-5pm and 10am-4pm Sunday with sale of roses just before closing on Sunday.

Along with the stunning massed Rose Displays there will be an Art Exhibition and stalls which include local nurseries, Estate Gardening Tools, Gill’s Card Making, and more.

The Sea Bridge

Wollongong is located 80 kilometres south of Sydney and is bordered by the Royal National Park to the north, Lake Illawarra to the south and the Illawarra Escarpment to the west.

The Wollongong coastline offers 17 sparkling surf beaches that are patrolled by lifesavers from September to April. Beaches are generally in easy walking distance from shops, hotels and clubs.

Stanwell Park to the north of Wollongong City, could be regarded as the gateway to the Illawarra region and is an ideal spot for day trippers.

Bald Hill Lookout, a magnificent platform looking south over Wollongong City, has outstanding views of the Illawarra and its escarpment. Watch hang gliders and para gliders or marvel at the spot

where Lawrence Hargrave first took flight.

Experience the Grand Pacific Sea Bridge, 665 metres over-the-ocean, near Stanwell Park; spend some time exploring northern coastal villages while heading down the cliff hugging roads hanging above the ocean.

North of Wollongong the coastal villages are famous for their unspoilt beaches and rock pools, unique art and crafts, great fishing and surfing spots as well as many cafes and restaurants.

From those northern villages, the Grand Pacific Drive makes its way into the city of Wollongong. There you will find an array of shopping outlets, restaurants and cafes, golf courses, art galleries and more.

Autumn has arrived and what a special time in the garden this season is. We should all well and truly be on our way to setting up our Autumn, Winter and early Spring flower and vegetable gardens.

In the flower garden preparation for the new seedlings involves the digging over of the beds and adding some weed free cow manure to encourage the new root development of the young seedlings.

Then it is off to the local nursery for your selection of pansy, viola, primula, stocks, poppies, wallflowers and stocks just to name a few.

All these varieties have many different forms from the exciting colours, many of them new this season, to the different heights that each particular plant can reach.

In designing the flower bed consideration should be given to the location of the bed relevant to the situation of the bed in the overall layout of the garden. Keep in mind as Winter arrives the sun is usually lower in the sky and some gardens can remain shaded for a greater time throughout the day.

Flowers and vegetables require at least six hours of direct sunlight a day to grow and produce quality fruit and flowers, so shade can be a problem.. Plants also create shade themselves so careful consideration to placing the taller varieties at the rear or less shady section of the flower bed.

At planting time use a seaweed/fish emulsion fertiliser to water in the seedlings. This will reduce the instance of transplant shock and get the young plants off to a great start.

Similarly in the vegetable garden planting should be well under way. With the same treatment as for the flower beds planting of cabbage, cauliflower, brussel sprouts, carrots, beetroot and many others can now go in.

If you haven't any room or live in a unit or the like, all these plants can be planted in pots, troughs etc. but using a premium potting mix to plant with. As for all potted plants the fertiliser requirement is greater in a pot than in the grounds. A weekly application of a liquid fertiliser will encourage more fruiting and flowering.
