Romans 13:1-6 (NIV)

13 Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. 2 Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. 3 For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and you will be commended. 4 For the one in au-thority is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for rulers do not bear the sword for no reason. They are God’s servants, agents of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer. 5 Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also as a matter of con-science.

Dear beloved church family,

The above verses written by the Apostle Paul in his letter to the Romans are important to reflect on. In the next couple months we will have the privilege and opportunity to vote for the next president of the United States of America. This election will have a great impact on our country for the next few years. We should all do our due diligence in determining whom is the best qualified to vote for to lead our country. Though Ameri-can politics is important to be aware of, let us not forget that God is ultimately the One in charge.

When the Apostle Paul addresses the church in Rome, he reminds them that the authorities that exist have been established by God. This election will be decided by a close margin of votes based on the latest national polls. Whether your chosen candidate prevails over the other, a lot of Americans may be upset with the out-come. Remember that God is the One in whom our ultimate allegiance is bound, and that our politics should not overshadow our love for God and humanity.

Paul’s letter was written to people who were already being ruled over a government they despised, and yet his call to them still rings true for us: 3 For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and you will be com-mended. 4 For the one in authority is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for rulers do not bear the sword for no reason. They are God’s servants, agents of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer. Our duty as citizens, and more importantly as Christians, is to be the model of goodness in a world lost in darkness. We should not fear who leads the country if we seek to live in righteousness and moral con-sciousness.

Hopefully the candidate we vote for is the one who wins, but if that is not the case, may we respond gra-ciously in defeat—placing our true hope in God. May we, as Christians, not be divided along political lines but united in our love for one another, and especially for non-believers. The long-held philosophy and unwritten rule in our society is to not discuss religion or politics. If we exercise more grace and charity in these areas of conversation, the outside world will begin to know us by our love. Continue the hard work of love and mercy as servants of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Iku Tamura

Iku Tamura passed away on August 20, 2016, while I the loving care of Phyllis Hathaway and Sacred Heart Hospital in Spokane, WA. Born in seattle, WA pm Kime20, 1926, she was the fifthe of six children born to Kinuta and Ryoko Uno. The Uno family lived in Seattle prior to WWII, during which they were relocated to the concentration camps at Tule Lake and later Minadoka before finally finding a new home and farm in Spokane after WWII ended. Iku met husband Linsy during in-carceration in the camps. They were mar-ried in 1949 and raised three children. Iku spent much of her adult life working on the Uno family farm. In her spare time she was an accomplished sewist, loved listening to music and entertained us many a Saturday night by playing the piano while we three girls sang! She enjoyed gardening and was a veritable textbook of knowledge when it came to plants and wildlife. She loved col-lecting good recipes to try out on lucky family member on Sunday night suppers and loved finding the best bargains at the grocery every Saturday morning! She was an avid reader and enjoyed mysteries. Once she retired from farming she did more traveling, visiting old friends and family. She was a kind and compassionate woman who loved to dote on grandchildren and sons-in-law, always giving the first and very best helpings to everyone else and put-ting herself last. Throughout her battles with both breast and bladder cancer, she fought courageously and showed us an amazing inner strength that we did not know existed. She was preceded in death by per parents, her husband, sisters Kazuko Bill, Misae Taketa, Heidi Onodera and brothers Tsutomu and Kiyoshi Uno. She is survived by daughters Phyllis (Ken)Hathaway, Teresa (Dave) seaquist and Ruth (Malcom)Manoand many nieces and neph-ews. Service will be in the spring.

Trustee Report: Many thanks to Wayne McDowell, back door installed at Parish.

The folding doors at the church are too costly at this time. It is impossible to repair.

Pastor John purchased a pest control plug for the parish.

It was voted and approved to accept the bid from Sturm Heating to take care of the heating problems, and hopefully when the weather comes it will be nice and toasty during the service. Thank you, Kathy Bott, for all the work you have put into the project.

Wayne is still taking bids for the blinds.

Reupholstering or replacing the pew cushions is on hold for the time being.

Social Concern: Patty Marinos has asked if we could get a colored printer for the church, this was also tabled for next meeting.

Blessings under the ridge need items such as blankets, pillows, hand sanitizer, tissues, soap, socks, wash cloths, winter gloves/mittens. It was mentioned we could also place the smaller items in grocery bags and hand them out to the homeless that are at the corner of the streets.

Marcie Miyoshi would like to lead an AWANA (children’s Bible learning group) with our help. There will be further dis-cussion at a later date.

The committee would like to advertise our church by put-ting up flyers up at Fairchild AFB, Mukogawa Fort Wright In-stitute etc about our Christian, ethnic, multi-cultural, predomi-nately Japanese church.

Donations to Tom and Joanne Ferris should be given or mailed to Pastor John, or Patty . Be sure to write Tom and Joanne Ferris on check or if cash, write on envelope. DO NOT send the money to the Care Bridge site as this site is for information only and will keep the money.

Jim and Pat Kawabata are now living in Seattle area. Jim

is recovering slowly from his back surgery. When address is known it will be published.

GUIDELINE FOR CONTRIBUTIONS AND DONATIONS

Send confirmation to every contributor either by letter or card that is not a member for all amleounts. Members are excluded as they will receive information for taxes after the end of the year.

Send a letter to the family that states who donated in honor or in memory of their loved ones.

Make sure that all checks that are desig-nated for Endowment are given to either Pastor Joh, Wayne McDowell or James Rogers. All other contributions and memori-als go to the general fund (general offering deposit) unless otherwise stated on the enve-lope or on the check. Endowment contribu-tions are in a separate account.

Please make sure your name and ad-dress is on all donations.
