The exterior envelope responds to program elements and views of the Bay, creating a semi-opaque “box” (gym) and a transparent glass “jewel” (fitness). The main organizing space, the lounge, is an environment flooded with natural light, serving as a transition between the box and the jewel. This space is further emphasized by the light monitor that floods the interior with natural light. The glass jewel is protected with a perforated aluminum veil, minimizing direct sunlight while maintaining views.

The tilt-up panels, used for the box which forms the exterior skin and structure, also possess great thermal mass qualities. Glazing placed in front of the panels, effectively create a solar thermal collector (trombe wall) to heat the interior space. The Util-1 shows that the building performance is 29% better than Title 24 requirements.

Tilt-up concrete used as exterior skin matches the campus context and provides thermal mass. A “kit-of-parts” system was developed for construction of the major systems. The interiors follow a “do more with less” approach where structure becomes finish ceiling; concrete slabs and walls are exposed, and passive systems are displayed.

The two-story recreation center, organized about a campus “Living Room,” is meant as an extension of the courtyard with operable doors and seat wall, welcoming students and engaging them in a holistic approach to their education. With sustainability as a driving force in the design of the building and its systems, this project is the first building on the Sonoma Campus to use the LEED rating system as a guideline for design.
