Higher Apprenticeship- Chemical Science Technician (Level 4) and Chemical

Science Technologist (Level 5)

Duration: 24 months (L4) and 36 months (L5)

Pathways: Chemical Science Technician (L4) and Chemical Science Technologist (L5)

Course Outline:

This higher apprenticeship is designed for trainee Laboratory and Science Technicians who carry out

laboratory testing and perform a variety of technical support functions to help Scientists and other

Technicians. It will enable the individual to develop the knowledge and skills needed in this area of

work. Candidates will attend College one day a week. These Apprenticeships also offer the

opportunity to gain professional status as a Registered Science Technician, Registered Scientist or

Registered Engineering Technician.

Course Content:

Combined qualifications available to these pathways:

B1 - EDEXCEL BTEC Level 4 HNC Diploma in Chemical Science for Industry (QCF)

B2 - EDEXCEL BTEC Level 5 HND Diploma in Chemical Science for Industry (QCF)

Employee rights and responsibilities

Functional skills

Entry requirements:

5 GCSEs A*-C or equivalent including English, Maths and Science. Individuals must obtain

an apprenticeship job in a relevant role. Other equivalent qualifications may be considered.

Teaching & Assessment:

Technical Skills is via continuous assessment in the workplace.

Assessment includes BTEC assignments throughout the course.

Functional skills are assessed via written examination.

Progression:

Progression from level 4 or 5 to an honours degree through part-time study with work-based learning

is possible. For example, in the chemical science pathway the apprentice could complete the level 4

qualification and then progress to the University of Liverpool BSc (Hons) in Chemistry.

The pathways within the BTEC Higher Apprenticeship in Chemical Professionals could lead to the

following job roles:

● Quality Control Analyst ● Formulation Scientist ● Plant Research Technician

● Water Treatment Technician ● Materials Scientist

Additional Information:

Apprentices will be employed for a minimum of 30 hours. Contracted hours include a day

release to College with the rest of the week in the workplace.
