Insulation coordination and reliability are important aspects in the design and refurbishment of overhead lines and substations.

STRI conducts studies of new designs, and to enhance ex-isting infrastructure, for example voltage up-rating of lines and conversion of AC lines to DC.

Dynamic rating of lines and substations together with on- line monitoring allows for smarter and more reliable operation, as well as the testing facilities for verifying the proposed solutions, for example:

• Conceptual studies, prototype demonstrations and verification of overhead lines including cable transitions, voltage uprating and AC/DC conversion

• Electrical dimensioning and testing of substation equipment including compact design and reliability evaluation

• Statistical insulation coordination of air clearances with regard to lightning and switching over voltages

• Line Performance Estimator (LPE software) to optimize insulation for HVDC and HVAC lines for varying environment

• Software and expertise for Dynamic Line Loading, EMF, audible noise, corona effects and grounding

• Maintenance and diagnostics for cables, disconnectors, breakers etc.

• Failure investigations of cables and cable accessories, line joints, circuit breakers etc.

Insulation related issues are often difficult to address due to lack of adequate standards and recommendations.

STRI has an exceptional combination of competence, methods and tools to cover most needs in the area of optimal insulation solutions such as for example:

STRI’s consulting services can also be combined with our testing services. We perform high voltage tests on products with system voltages up to 800 kV. All dielectric and environmental tests can be carried out.

STRI’s laboratory is accredited by SWEDAC, the Swedish accreditation body, giving our clients the benefit of knowing that we provide quality testing and comp- etence. STRI is a member of SATS which is a member of STL (Short Circuit Testing Liaison).

STRI provides a complete range of consultancy services related to the open implementation of the international standard IEC 61850.

STRI has access to major manufacturers of IEDs, IEC 61850 testing devices and software tools, and also to inde-pendent IEC 61850 engineering tools.

To enable expandable and fully vendor independent systems, STRI can assist you through the entire prospecting, tendering and commissioning FAT phases.

We can help you define the optimum solutions and specify the requirements for equipment. Manufacturers’ equipment and configurations can also be verified to ensure full intero-perability and assist in commissioning or system perfor-mance.

STRI’s competence also includes smart system solutions, ICT, SCADA and smart and active substations with process bus. We provide migration strategies for IEC 61850 to ensure a seamless and cost efficient integration to existing installation.
