Spring Fling 2020

“Let Luck Bloom” is the theme of the upcoming Spring Fling, the PFA’s biggest fundraiser of the year, set for Friday, April 3 at Spring Lake Manor in Spring Lake Heights.

The main event will be a Designer Bag Bingo and Gift Auction raffle. There will also be other fun games, a mega 50/50 drawing and ways to win great prizes.

Tickets are $45 per person or 2 for $85 until March 13. After that, tickets will be $55 per person. Tickets include buffet dinner, a complimentary drink, bingo boards and bingo dauber. Visit the PFA website to buy tickets online or by check. The PFA Spring Fling committee is collecting donations from local businesses, including restaurants, hotels, and social events. Business owners who would like to donate a gift card may contact [email protected]. Keep your eye on the mail - an information packet with 50/50 booklets will be arriving via mail this week!

We would like to take a moment to thank everyone, yet again, for helping make our annual fund drive a big success. Matching contributions are still coming in, and as of now we have raised more than $28,500. The PFA invests all of these funds back into the school. One of our largest programs that this money goes towards is for awarding Academic Enrichment grants to our faculty.

Every year, in the fall, the Academic Enrichment committee evaluates grant proposals from our teachers. Proposals are evaluated on several criteria. Most importantly the committee encourages proposals that reach the greatest number of students and grade levels, and are aligned with Common Core Curriculum Standards, Next Generation Science Standards, or STEM education. This year the committee awarded grants providing funds for:

The PFA thanks all faculty involved for doing the significant work required both in developing the grant proposals as well as in carrying out the projects. We also encourage parents with additional ideas for future projects to encourage teachers to put proposals together. Many of these ideas take significant time to go from an idea to a proposal that can be implemented.

NEWS AND NOTES…. At the March 2 monthly PFA meeting, Principal Kevin Bals focused part of his remarks on how the school is defending itself against spread of Covid-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus. To defend against illness, the school custodians are disinfecting surfaces with special thoroughness, he said. Classrooms have supplies of tissues and Lysol. District leaders were holding discussion this week about what schools need to do, and how to prepare if they need to close. In response to a question, Mr. Bals said students who must be absent for up to two weeks at a time will be able to keep up with assignments. On March 25, the school community is welcome to attend the Research Showcase at 6:30 p.m. to 8: 30 p.m. in the MPR. Teacher Michael Roche, the coordinator of student research, invites a HTHS graduate to speak to the students about their research before the audience can visit the projects. Mr. Roche recommended interested freshman and their parents attend the event for an idea of the program.

A clothing drive will be held March 30-April 1 to benefit the Academic Team. Watch for announcements. April 3 is our annual Spring Fling. The event is a friendly, festive evening with a ton of baskets to win. No need to “form a table” with others if you don’t have a group; you will be seated with other parents and make new connections. Please try to sell the 50/50 tickets that you receive in a mailing. If not, please return them to the office. Come dressed, come casual, just come and support the PFA’s mission to raise money for our school. Freshman Orientation will be April 23. At that time, the PFA will again offer a free car magnet to new families that join the PFA, paying in advance for all four years. June 4 is the annual Scholarship Night. This event at which PFA-funded scholarships and others are announced is open to all. On June 7, incoming students will be welcomed to the HTHS community at the annual Freshman Picnic, to be held at Wolcott Park, Eatontown.

LipSync&Teacher’sPetisoneofHighTech’smosthighlya3endedandentertainingeventsoftheyear.ItwasheldJan.17intheMPR.

Lip Sync consists of three acts from each grade. The performers lip-sync songs of their choice. They then receive a score from 1-10 from each of the 3 judges, allowing for a total max score of 30 points. The highlight of the night was a senior boys act consisting of Edwin Luo, Arjun Menon, Larry Wang, and Allen Lu performing “That’s What Makes You Beautiful” by One Direction. They took home the top score of 29.5 out of 30.During intermission, the audience gets to watch Teacher’s Pet, an hourlong contest based on The Newlywed Game where senior students play with their favorite teacher.

In case you don’t know what the Newlywed Game is, the teacher and student both take turns asking the other a question and then guessing what their answer will be. Some questions were easy like, “If your teacher never went into education, what would they be doing?”While others were harder like, “If your student opened a restaurant, what type of food would they serve?” Mrs. Tara Bufis and Daphne Yang emerged as winners, getting an impressive 8 out of 12 questions correct. Overall it was a fun-filled night with fantastic performances from everyone involved.Seniors won the event with a total score of 86.5 out of 90, followed by the sophomores with a score of 79 out of 90, the juniors with a score of 51 out of 90, and finally the freshmen with a score of 41.5 out of 90.


It's hard to believe that it's almost time to welcome the new class of High Tech-ers to HTHS. It seems like only yesterday when we were finding out the life-changing news that we were one of the lucky ones invited to attend this amazing school!

One of the best ways to guarantee success is to be involved, and one of the best ways to become involved is by taking on a leadership role within the PFA. Being on the board, or chairing an event, gives you the chance to make a difference at the school. As the year ends, the majority of the current board will be retiring and most positions will become open. We are looking for enthusiastic individuals, full of ideas, to help foster a tight knit community here at HTHS. One of the hidden advantages to being on the Board is that you get to really know the teachers, administration and staff – and get to make decisions about what PFA events take place at HTHS. You get to help shape our community – be a role model for your child, and show them that it is important to be involved!

Executive Board positions open for next year include: Vice President, Treasurer, Recording Secretary, and Corresponding Secretary. In addition, there are various chair positions for yearly events. So please get involved today! Contact me at [email protected] to find out more.

Classical Music Night 2020

Members of the HTHS Orchestra play at the annual Classical Music Night on Friday, Feb. 7. Students played around 25 pieces on piano, violin, viola, cello, flute, clarinet, French horn, trumpet and other instruments. This year, the PFA chose to offer free admission to the event.
