(McAllen, Texas)-What a sea-son, what a year in sports in South Texas. HSSM captured the best photo moments which told about the ups and downs of every game played throughout the year by high school athletes and coaches. Like every season, every team wants to win a district title or just making the playoffs would give that team, still hope for winning a possible state title too. These are the moments cap-tured by HSSM in 2011-12. In football, the Harlingen Cardinals (13-1) advanced to the State 5A Division I Quar-terfinals, just two rounds short from making it to the state championship game in Arling-ton, Texas at Cowboys Sta-dium. The Cards lost to San Antonio Madison at Javelina Stadium 42-27 before a packed stadium of more than 12,000 fans. Cardinal head coach Manny Gomez talked about his vision from the start of the season. “We are playing for a state title and we almost made it too,”

San Antonio, Texas while the Mustangs hosted the San Antonio Reagan Rattlers at McAllen Memorial Veterans Stadium on No-vember 26th before some 13,000 fans on a Saturday afternoon. A fumble in the Rattler’s endzone by Mustang QB Matthew Kaufmann resulted in a game winning touchdown for Reagan as they won 35-28 in the closing minutes of the game. In San Antonio, Cedar Park dominated the Wildcats from the start by taking a 28-0 halftime lead and never looked back, win-ning 49-0. Not since the Donna Redskins won the football title back in 1961 has a Valley team been back to win it but, in 2011, Harlingen was just two steps away from the title game.

The Eagles made one last leap into the endzone but the Cardinal defense was there to stop them and win 44-43. Like the Cardinals, the 32-4A district champions, Weslaco East Wildcats (12-1) and 30-5A district champions, McAllen Memorial Mustangs (12-1) both won the outright district titles and both advanced to the University Interscholastic League’s Regional Football Finals. (Harlingen, Tx)-Both Harlin-gen C.I.S.D. high schools won their last 31-5A basketball title in 2012 and both teams were deserving of the district titles too. Harlingen South won the

boys title while the Harlingen Lady Cardinals gave head coach Nora Zamarippa her 700th career win and a State 5A Region IV Quarterfinal appearance. “This has been a

long journey,” said head coach Zamarippa after beating Ed-inburg North on January 27th 49-46. “Every win is a tribute to our players and staff.” In the State 5A Girls play-

offs, the Lady Cardinals de-feated Brownsville Rivera and Sharyland before meeting No.6 ranked Laredo Alexan-der. At La Joya Palmview, head coach Andy Saenz led his Lobos to their first ever state basketball playoff appearance in 30-5A and the 32-2A Santa Rosa Warriors advanced to the State 2A Region IV semifinals before losing to Hallettsville 58-47. “This has been an awe-some season. I am very proud of my team and this honor,” said Hawks head coach Mo-lina. The Hawks were the only team from the Rio Grande Val-ley to reach the third round of the state playoffs in Class 5A before losing to Laredo United 71-59.

(Georgetown, Texas)-Soccer in the Rio Grande Valley showed its dominace throughout the UIL State Soccer playoffs in 2012. The Sharyland Rattlers (31-3-3) won the State 5A Boys Soccer title after ending as the 30-5A district runner-ups, by defeating Katy Morton Ranch in a shootout 3-2 at Birkel-bach Field in Georgetown. The win brought another state soccer title to South Texas since the Hidalgo Pirates captured the Class 4A state title in 2009 and Brownsville Porter won the last 5A state championship in 2006. In the shootout, the Mavericks scored on their first two attempts and led 2-0 with two rounds left before the Rattlers pitched a shutout. After a Mavericks miss, Olivarez answered for Sharyland’s first score in the shootout. Morton Ranch’s following misfire (they whiffed on their final four possessions of the shootout) opened the door for Lozano for the capper, sending the state title back to the Rio Grande Valley. In the Region IV finals in Brownsville, Sharyland defeated Browns-ville Lopez 2-1 to advance to the state tournament. The same school watched and hoped for their girls team to make the trip to Georgetown, but San Antonio Churchill would score it’s only goal of the day at the Brownsville Sports Complex, winning 1-0 over Sharyland in the Class 5A Region IV finals.

(McAllen, Texas)-The 2012 Track and Field season pro-duced four state champions from the Rio Grande Valley. In Class 3A, Armando Fierro of Port Isabel won the 1600m run and Shawn O’Brien of Rio Hondo won the 110m hur-dles. In Class 4A, Alex Garza easily swept the field in the shotput event to win another state title. He won two titles in Class 5A and 4A and Garza will now be headed to the University of Houston to compete in 2012-13. In Class 5A, Harlingen High School hurdler, Randy Bermea ended his career with a state title in the 300m hurdles and also nabbed third place in the 110m hurdles. He will be going to Cal on a track and field scholarship. After getting tripped up at the Class 4A Region IV Championships in San Antonio, Texas, La Joya Juarez-Lincoln long distant runner Emily Perez thought her high school career was over until the University Interscholastic League granted the talented senior another opportunity to run at state. She would finish fourth overall with a time of 10:48.69, just thirteen seconds behind state champion, Cali Roper of Willis High School. Perez will now run track for the Univeristy of Texas-San Antonio (UTSA) this fall. Highlights at the UIL State Track and Field Champi-onships held at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin, Texas from May 11-12th, included Port Isabel freshmen Daniella Murchison, who finished ninth overall in the shotput event, while La Joya Palmview shotput competitor, Felipe Valen-cia won the silver medal in Class 5A. In the high jump, McAllen Memorial’s sophomore Madeline Kaufmann fin-ished ninth overall and she will be favored to make it back to state in 2013 and 2014. In Class 4A, a determined high jumper, Zach Griffith finished tied for fourth overall with a jump of 6’6 to end his career at Edcouch-Elsa High School. Logan Brittain of Canyon Randall won the title with a jump of 6’10. Griffith will compete for Texas A&M Kingsville in the upcoming season. In Class 3A, La Feria’s Tyler Winton finished 5th overall in the high jump. Donna High School freshmen Vince Castillo finished fifth overall in the 300m hurdles with a time of 38.57, just two seconds behind state champion, Bermea. Terrell Clement from Fort Bend Kem-per nabbed second place with a time of 37.12. Junior Leigha Brown of Edinburg Economedes won four gold medals in District 31-5A and also set a new Val-ley record in the 100 meters hurdles with a 13.97 second mark. She also earned a trip back to the State 5A Region IV Track and Field meet in five events. She finished fifth in the 300m hurdles and eighth overall in the 100m hur-dlers at state. Roberto Valdez of McAllen High School won the 30-5A high jump title with a leap of 6’4 to advance to regionals and he also broke the school record at McAllen High School earlier this season. HSSM salutes all the track and field with their performances in 2012.

(Pharr, Texas)- The PSJA Bears won their 31-5A title in 2012 under head coach Marco Guarjardo with a perfect 14-0 re-cord and the Bears also advanced to the State 5A Region IV quarterfinals, losing to Laredo Alexander in three games. Like the Bears, the Sharyland Rattlers had high hopes of making it the state tournament at Dell Diamond Field in Round Rock, Texas too. The Rattlers needed to beat

State 5A No.2 team, Corpus Christi Car-roll Tigers. The state-ranked No.4 Rattlers met the Tigers in the Class 5A Region IV semi-finals and lost in two games (4-0, 2-1). The Rattlers featured 31 players on its roster and plenty of players will return in 2013. The Rattlers defeated Eagle Pass, Harlingen South, and Eagle Pass Winn in the state playoffs. The Carroll Tigers lost

in the State 5A semifinals to College Sta-tion A&M Consolidated 2-1. PSJA North, South, and San Benito all won Bi-Districts in 2012 in Class 5A while all teams from the Rio Grande Val-ley were eliminated inthe first round in Class 4A. In Class 3A, Rio Grande City Grulla H.S. won its first district title in District 32-3A. The Gators also won the Bi-District title as well.
