26TH ANNUAL SPORTSMANSHIP SUMMIT CONDUCTED AT GILLETTE STADIUM

More than 1,100 educators and young people attended the 26th Annual Sportsmanship Summit at Gillette Stadium on November 22, 2019. The MIAA and MSSADA conduct this annual event to honor, educate and celebrate those who make sportsmanship a priority in their schools and constantly strive to improve the athletic culture in Massachusetts high schools. Primary sponsors for the event were the New England Patriots Charitable Foundation, and the Massachusetts Army National Guard. Summit attendees participated in interactive workshop sessions, listened to motivational speeches and witnessed the presentation of awards to schools and individuals recognized for outstanding contributions to sportsmanship and community service in high school athletics.

JAMES F. MULLOY SPORTSMANSHIP AWARDJames Mulloy, a great friend of high school ice hockey and an outstanding educator, served as a teacher and administrator for more than 37 years in the Everett Public Schools. During this time, he served a total of 24 years as a varsity ice hockey coach at three MIAA schools: Dom Savio, Malden Catholic and Everett High School. He was also honored as a member of the Massachusetts State Hockey Coaches’ Hall of Fame.Next to his family, Jim’s great love was ice hockey. As MIAA Ice Hockey Chair and Statewide Hockey Observer, his legacy was marked by his promotion and dedication to sportsmanship in the game. To that end, the Massachusetts State Hockey Coaches’ Association and the MIAA established the James F. Mulloy Sportsmanship Award. This award is presented annually to the most outstanding boys and girls’ ice hockey programs in each division across the state for demonstrating an allegiance to the ideals of sportsmanship. The James F. Mulloy Sportsmanship Award will be presented to deserving teams during the state championship games this year. MIAA Student Sportsmanship Essay Contest----- 1st Place -----

The Merriman-Webster dictionary defines sportsmanship as conduct (such as fairness, respect for

one's opponent, and graciousness in winning or losing) becoming to one participating in a sport. I

believe that it boils down to one word: respect. Sportsmanship is how one acts, not just how they carry

themselves, but how they respect others. By playing with sportsmanship, you not only perform at your

best, but you display leadership through your example. I have learned this in my play and now as a

leader. Sportsmanship gives you the ability to act selflessly and this translates into your performance,

and also your interactions with others in the hallways, in the classroom, and in your community.

For the longest time, I equated athletics with competition. At a young age, I remember wanting to play

well and win; those were my two sole goals. However, through experience, I realized that athletics was

not just about competition, but it was about the community and solidarity that is formed between you,

your teammates, your coaches, and everyone involved in the sport. When I realized this, I prided myself

on being the player with the best attitude and conduct. I respected the refs and my opponents. I pulled

my opponents up. I firmly believe that my ability to display sportsmanship has allowed me to become a

leader. It truly inspired me to want to be a leader. I wanted everyone to realize the importance of

fairness and respect. Once I realized this, I intentionally, and in some ways unintentionally, began to

promote it in my team and even my school community. And, I was encouraged when I saw that my

teammates, in turn, began to value sportsmanship just as much as I did. Players that once were upset

by referee’s calls were now the ones that calmed down another player. Players that once let

themselves fell into tensions with opposing players were the ones that helped opponents up. They

became leaders because they did what was not easy and inspired others to do the same. This

leadership not only translated into their actions on the court, but into our school community as well. I

noticed these same players helping a freshman adjust to high school or help someone talk to a teacher

respectfully.

Our team culture has always been based around hard work and, more importantly, respect. This

fundamental value is what truly represents sportsmanship. I and my teammates play with respect, and

this not only inspires us to be leaders on the court but in our communities as well. We want to be the

students that act respectfully in the classroom. Our actions reflect our values, and these values

hopefully inspire our community to act the same way.

Sportsmanship is defined by respect. It not only inspires me to be a leader, but it inspires my

teammates and my community to live with that value, and that is what sportsmanship is really about:

acting with respect and inspiring others to do the same.

A MESSAGE FROM WILLIAM GAINE MIAA EXECUTIVE DIRECTORDuring each academic year, more than 230,000 students fill roster spots on athletic teams in 35 sports within the MIAA’s 377 member high schools.

School sports, or “education based athletics,” lead participants through important and unique learning opportunities that will enhance each student’s life. Good citizenship, sportsmanship, leadership, integrity, loyalty, sense of duty, ethics, and respect are among the various lessons taught and emphasized in education based athletics. For more than 97 percent of graduating student-athletes, high school athletics will mark the conclusion of their involvement in organized sports. Less than one percent of student-athletes advance to play Division I college, or professional sports. It is for this reason that the Mission of education based athletics is focused on the life-learning opportunities provided through the “other half of education.”

The MIAA tournament experience is a celebration of “excellence” for student athletes and high school teams across the State. We applaud the success of each team, their coaches and their supportive communities. On behalf of the MIAA Ice Hockey Committee, Tournament Management Committee, Board of Directors, and participating school leaders, “WELCOME” to the 2020 MIAA Ice Hockey Tournaments.

Let us salute with respect all student-athletes participating today by demonstrating positive behavior throughout today’s event and the entire tournament. Interscholastic athletic competition is an extension of the classroom and an educational activity that provides outstanding opportunities to teach life lessons. Through participation in such programs, young people learn values and skills that help prepare them for the future. Leadership, goal setting, teamwork, decision making, perseverance, integrity, sacrifice, healthy competition and overcoming adversity are inherent in the interscholastic athletic framework and also support the academic mission of schools. Student-athletes earn the privilege to participate by succeeding academically, and the resulting positive outcomes continue far beyond graduation. These programs exist to prepare young men and women for the next level of life, not the next level of athletics.

Wins are achieved through athletics by developing successful athletes and teams, but more importantly, wins are achieved through the educational experience by developing successful and responsible students, leaders and community members. Jumped out to 3-0 lead...Marauders eliminated Reading, which had lost the Super 8 play-in game, in sectional semifinals.Road to the Garden: BelmontMarauders are 14-3-5 since losing their first two games of the season to Wilmington, 4-2, and Melrose, 4-1, both games at home.
