Baldwin High Braves

The Union-Recorder

There is no secret towhat the BaldwinBraves will be doingthis season: running theball, passing the balland hoping to stayahead of all competitorsdefensively.

All of this adds up to awinning formula, andfirst-year head coachDexter Copeland hasthe energy, fire anddrive to get it all done.

Oh, and he also has atalented stock ofweapons on both sidesof the ball.

On offense, the teamwill be led by fast-risingquarterback DeAndreThomas, who took overduties late last season, and who showed flashesof brilliance in the postseason.

The Braves will needto overcome the bumps

and bruises they recent-ly sustained in their dis-appointing scrimmageversus WilkinsonCounty in the annualJamboree at BaldwinHigh Stadium.

Baldwin’s offense willneed to “hold on to theball” and prevent costlypenalties in order to besuccessful.

With senior AltoviseHarris at running backand the likes of seniorlinebacker JanerioBonnor and junior line-backer Jose Solomonmanning the defensealong with All-every-thing defensive endKitray Solomon,Baldwin could surprisemany this season.

“We have tons of line-backers. JavonGriswold, JanerrioBonnor and JoseSolomon will be ourstarting three lineback-

ers. We are lucky tohave depth at that posi-tion. We will play atleast five during anypoint during a game,”said Copeland, who pre-viously had a successfulstint at Twiggs County.

The key to their sea-son could lie in theiropening Region 2-AAAmatchup with Centralfrom Macon. This gamealong with the Sept. 10game versus Westside(2-AAA) will probablyset the tone forBaldwin’s season. WestLaurens and theremaining 2-AAA slatewill provide plenty ofcompetition for theBraves as they try toestablish defensivesuperiority early, andperhaps get thingsclicking on offense.

“It’s going to be fun.

Expectations are highat GMC Prep where theteam hopes to ascendfrom their 3-7 finish ayear ago.

Second-year headcoach Brad Owens hasbeen a tireless work-horse during the offsea-son, and even blew outhis vocal chords duringa motivational rally withstudents and parents.

The Bulldogs workedon building their depth, overall conditioningand team strengthduring the summer, but the team suf-fered some emo-tional bumps andbruises in theirpreseason scrimmagewith Double-AMonticello.

The Bulldogs will trav-el to Strong RockChristian Aug. 27 andface a team that finished4-7 a year ago.

GMC Prep matches upwell with Strong Rockand will need to comeout confident and fired-up in order to have achance to win. GMCPrep will also need tocome out and establishsuperiority on defense.

“Defensively, we’vegot a lot more depth anda lot more competition. So, there’s some realbattles at certain spotsthat there haven’t beenin the past years. I justthink the level of compe-tition is increasing forus — our intensity andphysicalness,” saiddefensive coordinatorSteven Simpson. “Theyare getting bigger andare getting faster. Guysare also looking out foreach other. When oneguy makes a mistake theother guy picks him up.They always encourageeach other in a construc-tive manner. They wantto be successful.”

Owens wasn’t verypleased after the

Bulldogs’ recent scrim-mage with Monticello, and hopes the team willcontinue to work hard —and build their mentaltoughness as well astheir physicality.

“I was disappointed inthe half in the fourthquarter. They hurt uswith the option early on.They had a really toughrunning back and he justkept breaking tackles,”

s a i d

O w e n s .“We playedpoorly in the fourthquarter, and that comesdown to conditioning. We are going to take it aswhat it was — a learningexperience. We aregoing to figure out whatis wrong and we aregoing to fix it.”

On offense, theBulldogs will be relyingheavily on junior quar-terback Ray Mosley, sophomore runningback Taylor Payne, andbruising freshman full-back Hunter Harding, who really stood out onboth sides of the ballduring the summer.

Junior running backJustin Parham has alsolooked like a game-breaker during the sum-mer and will give theBulldog’s another home-

run threat from thebackfield to compli-ment Payne.

GMC Prep isstrict when itcomes to specialteams, and none

come any betterthan returning All-Statepunter JosephMcAllister, who alsostars as one of GMCPrep’s primary deepthreats at receiver.

The Bulldogs willneed McAllister’s leg topin opponents deep andwill also need for him to

Can JMA climb out ofthe cellar in 2010? Willthere line hold up asthe season progresses?

These are just a fewof the questions beingtossed about by diehardJMA followers as theirseason opener withGatewood Thursdaynight kicks off prepfootball for BaldwinCounty. Baldwin andGMC Prep will kickoffFriday, Aug. 27.

JMA has arguably thedeepest and most expe-rienced quarterbackroster in the county. The team has beengoing with junior RyanBlizzard in the summer, but also have heraldedtransfer Wicker Tutenfrom south Georgia tothrow into the mix.Tuten was considered astrong candidate for thestarting position beforehe went down with aninjury a few weeks ago.

Blizzard and seniorDerren McGiboney willboth use their quick-ness and abilities tokeep the Trojans in themix early on.

Playing Gatewood onthe road to open the

season won’t be easy, but then again, theTrojans have nothing tolose.

“We are going to try tocome out and establishthe run. I felt like lastyear we got down earlyand then went to throwand throw and throw. There were some goodthings we got out of thepassing game last yearthat we want to utilizethis year,” said associ-ate head coach J.T.Wall. “J.T. Stevenslooked real good at full-back. This year we wantwant to establish therun and get thingsgoing. We are probablygoing to be a tailback bycommittee. CooperMorgan has lookedgood. Heath Robertslooks good, youngTommy Pittman looksgood. We also want tolook at DerrenMcGiboney at the posi-tion.”

JMA’s offensive speedshould improve whenTuten returns.

“The whole offensewill change whenWicker comes back. Wehave to applaudDerren, he’s like ourOmar Infante (utility

player with the AtlantaBraves) — he can dopretty much anythingand can play severalpositions.”

Senior Josh Harrisoncould turn out to be adeep threat at wideout.

“He’s a tall, athleticguy that is not afraid togo up and get the ball.He can jump. JohnThrower and TylerArthur are at tight end.The line also looksgood,” said Wall.

JMA also addedGranger Harpe, a muchneeded transfer fromBaldwin High. Harpe istall and has the overallsize and ability to reallygive the Trojans a booston the offensive anddefensive front.

“I think we are doinga better job of flying tothe ball, and trying tobe more aggressive. Ithink in summer campwe progressed in thatregard,” said defensivecoordinator GarySanders. “We’ve hadseveral guys step upand try to earn playingtime.”

Among those wereCooper Morgan, a soph-omore that has beenstanding out at defen-sive end.

“We’ve got to find outwho is going to step for-ward and do the job forus,” said Sanders. “J.T.Stevens is looking goodat linebacker, and JoshHarrison is doing agreat job in the second-ary flying to the ball.

Sanders also men-tioned that two-waylineman Brandon Bushis also looking good atend, and that RyanBlizzard is lookingsharp at the strong safe-ty position.

“Junior B.T. Waltersalso stepped up andmade some plays for us.We’ve just got to getmore consistency out ofall of them,” saidSanders. “Stevens,McGiboney, Harrisonand Frankie Hines areall taking on that lead-ership roll this year. Weneed that leadershipfrom our seniors.”

Hancock Centralhead coachZackery Harris, who graduatedhimself fromH a n c o c kCentral in1995, will con-tinue in his rollas chief motiva-tor of the team in2010 after a 2009campaign in whichthey only won onegame.

The Bulldogs boastseveral veteran playersat their skill positions, from senior VontaviousHowell at running back(currently out with aninjury), and seniors

Alden Lawson andJames Wanambwa atwideout.

The team will alsosport several juniorsand seniors on theoffensive and defensivefronts, according toHarris.

Last season’sBulldogs squeakedthrough the season andwere only able to cap-ture one victory, butthat will change in 2010when Hancock Centralhas a chance to play therole of spoiler in sever-al games

The team is alsoexpected to get helpfrom some its under-classmen.

“Deonte Franklin, asophomore, is our start-ing running back. Heshould be pretty goodthere this year,” saidHarris via telephone.“We have only 35 play-ers and that’s putting astrain on us as far asdepth. Justin Brookinswill anchor the offen-sive line. KentariousSmith is a senior andhe’ll help out there

also,” said Harris.”Alden Lawson will

be playing outsidelinebacker andtight end forus.”

team is leaner this yeardue to some playerstransferring elsewhere.

“We had about sixkids go to GeorgiaMilitary. That reallyhurt us. Wayne Griffin, our quarterback lastseason, he transferredalso,” he said. “Theyare a small group ofseniors, they’ve beenplaying since theirfreshman year. Most ofthem played as fresh-man.”

Although their sched-ule is rough, HancockCentral should be ableto notch some victories, and could surprisesome people with theirteam speed.

“Two teams we canreally play with areGlascock andWarrenton in terms ofnumbers. Everybodyelse is pretty big andgenerally pretty goodevery year,” saidHarris.

Putnam County tied for first inRegion 4-AA in 2009 and could do thesame in 2010.

Head coach Ben Reaves was allsmiles when discussing the potentialhis team has this season.

“I feel good about our senior group. It’s the first four-year group I’ve had. They are competitive, hard workersand have always done a great job forus,” said Reaves. “We are excitedabout our starters and depth. Ourbackups, we are looking to get themwhere they need to be.”

The 2010 War Eagles will also haveone primary team strength.

“Our unity throughout the yearshas been our team strength, andexperiencing winning last year. Ourkids left that last game hungry. Wehope they pick that up this year withthat same hunger,” said Reaves.

Putnam County finished 8-3 lastseason, but wants to get further in theplayoffs this year.

“We have a few goals — win all ourhome games, win our region champi-onship and go to state. We want towin every fourth quarter,” saidReaves.

Like all the teams featured in thisyear’s U-R Prep Football Explosion,Putnam County will count a lot on itscore group of senior leaders.

“We have some great senior leader-ship. Linemen Cameron Harper,Vontarious Wesley at tackle, quarter-back Nick Burke and our tailbacksare all returning,” said Reaves. “Ourreceiving corps? We’ve got four orfive guys there. Defensively we areexcited about our linebacking posi-tion. In the secondary we have someyoung guys working there. CharlestonReed at safety is a head-hunter anddoes a great job for us.”

The team finished 7-4last season, but could beeven better this year.

“Our quarterback is asenior, John Taylor, andhe throws the ball well. He’s going to be a goodleader on the team,”said Harper. “We returnmost of our offensiveline except for a couple. Our junior tailbackRoss Coleman is back, and we have wideoutIsaac Ringer, 6-3.”

Harper didn’t hidewhat his offense will bedoing, and what suc-cessful offenses striveto do.

“Hopefully we canrun and throw the ballthis year. We are a 50/50team,” said Harper.

Harper also addedthat his defensive frontis coming along afterlosing seven starterslast season.

“We have three orfour who have started. We hope they get plentyof reps and know theirassignments. That’s oneof the things they’veworked on since thefall,” he said.

Gatewood is movingback down to GISA AAthis year and will face

the likes of Brentwood,Piedmont and EdmundBurke.

“We played for thestate championship in1988 and lost, and thenwon it all in 1990. So it’sbeen 20 years,” saidHarper. “We’ve made itto the final four a cou-ple times after that.”

Harper is excitedabout his Thursdayopener with JMA andfeels his team, as wellas area fans will beready.

“Hopefully, we willhave a big crowd fromall the other schoolswho aren’t playing. When we dropped backdown to double A wedecided to make it thefirst game of the year,”said Harper. “Piedmontsays they are ourbiggest rivalry. JohnMilledge also says weare their biggest rivalry.I think we play a rivalteam every two weeks.”

Gatewood’s coachstated that the programis on the rise, and theyounger generation arelooking primed andready to do great thingsin the future as well.

“We are striving rightnow to build the pro-gram back up. We have52 boys in our C-Teamprogram. We have about110 kids in our footballprogram right now,”said Harper. “We knowwe have to work hard inthis region, Piedmont,Edmund Burke andBrentwood all went tothe final four last year. The top four teams go,and that’s our goal — tomake the state play-offs.”

The team sports over 80players on theiractive roster, andthere is a feel-ing aroundM o r g a nCounty thatthis couldbe the yearto believe.

The 2009B u l l d o g sfinished theseason 1-9,with their lonewin being a 14-0defeat of JacksonCounty.

Morgan County’s toughest oppo-nents in 2010 will be versus Avondale,Putnam County and Lamar County.

The team returns seven players onoffense, and six on defense and thisshould bode well as the Bulldogs slug

their way throughout the season.Key returning starters for Morgan

County include senior running backAntwan Carter and senior quarter-back JD Hawkins. Senior offensivelineman Conner Perry also returnsand will anchor the line.

According to MaxPreps.comMorgan County’s strength’s

Will this be the yearfor the GMC JCBulldogs? Will theyslither out of the pit ofmediocrity and findtheir way back into thebowl picture?

The Bulldogs travel toCorsicana, Texas fortheir season openerSept. 4 versus Top 10Navarro, before theirhome opener Sept. 11versus Top 5 rankedSnow, a game that couldturn out to be the gameof the year.

There is no doubt theBulldogs have the talentto defeat anybody thisseason. Perhaps thebiggest question mark isat quarterback, wherethey lost two startersand will work with sev-eral newcomers to seewho has what it takes toget the job done.

“We just have to findout which quarterbackcan handle the pressure. Two guys went throughspring that showed somecapabilities. SigneeDylan Shaddix was agood quarterback inhigh school. He’s in themix,” said GMC JC headcoach Bert Williams.

Williams stated thathis skill positions arestill pretty solid and thatthe offense will need togo with what’s best forthe team.

“We have to be willingto adapt our offense towhat our tools allow usto be good at. Ouroffense is different — we

don’t have the experi-ence we had a year ago,”said Williams. “We havea strong group at run-ning back, but we needto find our quarterback. We have a good tight endgroup and a good receiv-er group.”

The GMC JC defense isas good as any, and mostteams won’t be able tojust run the ball againstthem.

“I feel like we have thetools to be a very goodteam. The defenseshould be pretty strong. We have experience andtalent and we have somegood signees as well. Wehave the chance to makea strong unit evenstronger,” said Williams.

The Bulldog offensiveline should also be a for-midable bunch oncethey all come together.

“We are still trying toevaluate that on theoffensive side. One guywho has made tremen-dous improvements is(6-foot, 6-inch) KalebBroome, who hasalready committed to anSEC school. He’s done afine job in the classroomand in workouts. He hadan injury that slowedhim down but he’s backto 100 percent,” saidWilliams. “Micah Jamesis another big, tall offen-sive lineman for us. Hehad a slow start, but hereally worked hard inthe offseason. Hedropped weight andimproved his speed.”

Williams said offen-sive lineman Rick Canty

from Manning, S.C.seems to be motivated todo great things, andfrom an athletic andexplosiveness stand-point is probably thebest.

“Big (6-foot, 6-inch)Darvell Nelson is also abig body out there andhe can move some meatfor us,” said Williams.

At defensive end, All-American candidateLeroy Vick is coming offACL surgery but is closeto being back to 100 per-cent, which bodes wellfor the Bulldogs.

“Brad Spivey at theother end is one of ourmost consistent goodplayers on the line.Brandon Johnson canalso do some big things,”said Williams. [UGArecruit] Jalen Fields isalso a big body andpacks a lot of punch. Hewill do some big thingsfor us. Keon Stowers is aconverted linebackerand is super quick atthat position.”

Williams is also excit-ed about big DanielMcCullars (6-foot, 6-inches).

“He looks like a PaulBunyan. He is superstrong and he reallyworked super hard overthe summer,” he said.

The defense’s mostdecorated player, line-backer AntonioMitchum, is back, and islooking good after ACLsurgery. He is now 100percent.

“Demery Hawkins isalso a very impactingplayer who can be a bigplay guy. He made sever-al critical game-chang-ing plays last year,” saidWilliams. “QwontezMallory, Marquis Lovett,Jarvis Brice — it’s agood group, a stronggroup. We are fortunateto have good players.”

GMC JC is also verystrong in the secondarywith Demario Gunn,Kentorious Jackson,Alex Brown andDemazio Skelton allreturning. All made sig-nificant plays in 2009.

All in all, it’s going tobe an exciting year forGMC JC, andMilledgeville reallyneeds to come out Sept.11 and root the Bulldogsback into the upperechilon of the NJCAArankings.

2010 could turn out tobe a very special yearfor GMC JC.

OFFENSE: “Thequarterback room hasgot to be the youngestroom maybe in the his-tory of college football,”remarked Richt at therecent SEC Media Days.“You got a redshirtfreshman, a true fresh-man on scholarship andthen two walk-ons, andthat is all that is in thatquarterback room rightnow so it's scary inthere. But the goodnews is Aaron Murray isreally doing a very goodjob, and he knows thedeal extremely well.”

Murray is the redshirtfreshman of the group, aprized recruit with spe-cial talent. He will cer-tainly benefit from thepresence of A.J. Green, the team's star receiverwho now enters his jun-ior campaign. Greenmade 53 catches for 808yards and six touch-downs, numbers thatactually fell short of thepace he set as a fresh-man.

The hope is thatGeorgia will be able torun the ball consistentlybehind one of the topoffensive lines in theSEC. Clint Boling, a studleft tackle, is one of fourreturning starters, andthe group will openholes for the tandem ofWashaun Ealey, a sopho-more, and junior CalebKing. Last season, Ealeyposted 717 yards andthree touchdowns on125 carries.

DEFENSE: Georgiawelcomes back just fourstarters on the defen-sive side of the ball, soexpect to see plenty ofnew faces in 2010.

“Defensively every-body is still on a prettygood learning curveright now, but everybodyis ready to learn andprepare for this sea-son,” says Richt.

Three of the team'sfour defensive assistantcoaches were fired afterthe 2009 season, and it

remains to be seen if theshakeup will result inbetter play. New coordi-nator Todd Grantham isorchestrating the switchfrom a 4-3 defense to a3-4, a move designed tocreate an attackingstyle. The Bulldogs weresolid against the runlast season, rankingthird in the SEC, butthey struggled mightilyagainst the pass.

Brandon Boykin, ajunior, is the onlyreturning starter in thesecondary, but that maynot necessarily be a badthing. Boykin did inter-cept three passes lastseason, the most of anyreturnee. LinebackerJustin Houston has starpotential, as heimpressed everyonewith 7.5 sacks a yearago.

Along the defensiveline, Demarcus Dobbs, asenior, figures to be theleader.

SPECIAL TEAMS: Itseems odd to say, butaside from Green andBoling on the offensiveside of the ball,Georgia's best players

are kickers. DrewButler, the team'spunter, won the Ray GuyAward last season, whileBlair Walsh was a final-ist for the Lou GrozaAward, awarded to thenation's top placekicker. To further emphasizethe strength of theBulldogs' special teamsunits, Boykin had two100-yard returns fortouchdowns last season.

OUTLOOK: Much ofGeorgia's success thisseason will come downto the play of Murrayunder center.

“It's pretty clear thathe is going to be theguy,” says tight end AronWhite. “He's definitelynot resting on his lau-rels. He's still workingand grinding because hefeels like he has a lot toprove.”

The non-conferenceschedule is favorable, and the Bulldogs arefortunate in that theyavoid Alabama. Still, ashot at the SEC titleseems unlikely becauseof the inexperience atquarterback and ondefense.

TIME TO START BEATING FLORIDA: UGA head coach Mark Richt could be on thehot seat again if his team continues to lose to Florida.

Photos by Brent Martin/The Union-RecorderTIME TO STEP UP: UGA redshirt freshman quarterback Aaron Murray will haveplenty of targets to throw to in 2010, plus the advantage of a veteran line.

JUNKYARD PHILOSOPHY: Georgia’s new defensive coordinator Todd Grantham, who previously coached for the Dallas Cowboys, is bringing forth a relentlessdefensive package this season.

OFFENSE: Josh Nesbitt did notparticipate in spring practice thisyear, but word has it that he washealthy enough to go. Chalk it up toprecautionary reasons that kept himsidelined this spring, and who couldblame him or the Jackets?

Jaybo Shaw, Nesbitt's backup ayear ago, transferred to GeorgiaSouthern this offseason, leavingTevin Washington as Nesbitt's pri-mary backup. Washington was solidthis spring, but has played in onlyone game at the collegiate level, andthat came in mop up duty againstJacksonville State in the first week.Keeping Nesbitt healthy is impor-tant.

The offensive line, a unit replacingthree starters, will be challenged tokeep defenders away from Nesbittthis season, but it's inevitable thathe'll take his fair share of bumps andbruises as one of the offense's pri-mary ball carriers. Georgia Tech's

triple option offense has taken themto new heights under Paul Johnson.Jonathan Dwyer opted for early entryinto the NFL Draft, but AnthonyAllen, Roddy Jones and EmbryPeople are poised to take over whereDwyer left off. Allen will take overDwyer's B-Back position and will seea lot of runs to the inside, with RoddyJones likely to get a bulk of the car-ries to the outside.

Demaryius Thomas, who is now inthe NFL, caught 46 passes last sea-son. The second leading receiver wasEmbry People with 8 receptions.Stephen Hill came in third with sixreceptions for 137 yards and a touch-down, and is expected to blossominto the next big thing in the passinggame.

DEFENSE: Virginia is transition-ing away from Al Groh's 3-4 defensein favor of the 4-3 variety, while Grohbrings his 3-4 defense to Atlanta. There are a few holes to fill with theearly departures of Derrick Morganand Morgan Burnett, but overall

Georgia Tech returns eight startersfrom a year ago. Of course, with thenew defense a lot of players will findthemselves in new roles in 2010.Anthony Egbuniwe finds himself atoutside linebacker after playing thedefensive end position oppositeMorgan last season, while JasonPeters moves from the tackle posi-tion to end. Filling the nose tackleposition in the 3-4 defense hasproven problematic.

T.J. Barnes, Logan Walls and BenAnderson will compete this fall forthe position.

Peters and Izaan Cross are the pre-sumed starters at the end positionsand will have some pretty big shoesto fill in terms of getting pressure onthe quarterback. Morgan's 12.5 sackslast season ranked 8th in the nation.Brad Jefferson, last year's leadingtackler, will assume one of the inside

linebacker positions and is a keyplayer in stopping the run. Fans canalso look forward to the return ofCooper Taylor to the safety position.Taylor sat out the 2009 season with aheart disorder and returns to theteam in 2010. He was one of thestandout players in 2008, finishingsecond on the team with 69 tackles.Cornerback Mario Butler is also akey player in the secondary whoshould be in for a good season.

SPECIAL TEAMS: Scott Blairreturns to assume kicking duties.Blair was 45 for 46 in extra pointsand hit 14 of his 20 field goalattempts last season. ChandlerAnderson also returns after averag-ing 42.3 yards per punt last season onjust 37 attempts. Orwin Smith andJerrard Tarrant, last season's leadingkick and punt returners, respectively, also return for the 2010 season.

Jaybo Shaw had to execute only one basic move to be proclaimed GeorgiaSouthern's starting quarterback by first-year coach Jeff Monken.

Shaw only had to enroll in school.Shaw followed first-year coach Jeff Monken to Statesboro from Georgia

Tech, where Monken was an assistant coach under Paul Johnson and Shawwas a backup to Joshua Nesbitt.

The new coach and transfer quarterback are leading GeorgiaSouthern's return to the triple-option offense, the attack thatworked so well for Johnson when he was the Eagles' coach.

Monken coached under Johnson at Georgia Southern,Navy and Georgia Tech.

Georgia Southern was 62-10 with twonational championships in Monken's fiveyears as an assistant (1997-2001) withJohnson. Monken is cautioning fansagainst expecting an immediatereturn to those glory years.

“We're undefeated right now sowe're going to enjoy that while it lastsand do the best we can to try to bringsome victories here to Statesboro,”Monken said. “I know that's what ourfans are hopeful for.”

He said the return of the option offensedoes not guarantee an immediate returnto the top of the Southern Conferenceand FCS.

“It is not a magic wand,” Monkensaid. “It's not a magic offense that 'oh we're running this offense so we'regonna rush for all these yards and score so many points. You've got to executeon offense better than the team we're playing executes on defense. If we cando that we'll have a chance.”

Monken wouldn't try to predict how long the transition will take.“It probably doesn't happen in the first year,” he said. “I don't know that in

my travels with coach Johnson that it has happened anywhere in the firstyear. Some places faster than others, and we'll just have to see. I think thelonger we do it the better we'll get at it.”

Monken says his reception from fans “has been great.”

“I think they're most receptive because of the connection I have to PaulJohnson and the success he had here and he's had since he left here,”Monken said. “There's a hope that we can bring that success back and I'm No.1 on that list. I hope that, too.”

Monken replaced Chris Hatcher, who was fired after a 5-6 record last sea-son.

“It surprised a bunch of us,” said sophomore defensive tackle BrentRussell of Hatcher's firing. “We really weren't expecting it.”

Russell said Monken “lays it all out on the line for you. He tells you whathe expects from you. If you don't work to his expectation, he'll tell you upfront.”

Added Russell with a laugh: “Not that coach Hatcher didn't, he just would-n't be so blunt about it.”

Hatcher, now the head coach at Murray State, was 18-15 in three seasons atGeorgia Southern.

Shaw, a junior, did not participate in spring practice. He was in Statesborofor informal workouts during the summer.“Just having him here, having him work out, being inthe weight room, having him be with the guys helps

us,” Monken said. “It was very beneficial to havehim here.”

Georgia Southern's top four quarterbacksfrom 2009 left the program. The 2009starter, Lee Chapple, transferred to North

Alabama to play for coach TerryBowden.Jawaun Luckey, a walk-on transfer

from Tuskegee, and A.J. McCray, whomoved to quarterback from defen-sive back, ran the offense in thespring. Neither can match Shaw's

experience in the system.Shaw passed for 321 yards and two touch-

downs and ran for 200 yards and threetouchdowns as a freshman in 2008. He

returned to a more limited role last seasonafter suffering a broken collarbone in presea-son practice.“We obviously gained a real advantage with

getting Jaybo,” Monken said. “He brings the gameexperience, leadership and the confidence of having run this offense ingames, which we don't have with any of our other quarterbacks. None of ourother quarterbacks have played a college game in this offense.”

Junior Zeke Rozier entered preseason practice as the No. 1 fullback. Heleft Saturday's scrimmage with a knee injury. The severity of the injury hasnot been released.

Freshmen Robert Brown of Macon and 5-foot-6 Aaron Fisher of Tulsa,Okla., also are competing for playing time at fullback. Monken said Fisher “isreally fast and powerful.”

ATLANTA — In his previous head coaching jobs, there were plenty ofthings for Bill Curry to worry about.

Who's going to play quarterback? How does the defense look? Will theseAlabama fans ever fully accept me?

There were other issues that never crossed his mind.Do we have enough helmets and chin straps? What are we going to use for

a locker room? Where are we going to practice? But those are just the sort of things Curry has fretted over in what will cer-

tainly be the final coaching job of his career and arguably the most dauntingone yet.

In less than two weeks, Curry will lead the Georgia State Panthers onto thefield for their very first game, the culmination of a two-year journey thatexposed the exhilarating highs and excruciating lows of starting a collegefootball program from scratch.

“It's been a real adventure and I've loved every minute of the challenge,”the 67-year-old Curry said, pausing briefly and adding with a wry grin, “Well, almost every minute.”

OK, so he didn't really love it when he learned that his first semblance of ateam - recruits and walk-ons who spent a formative year doing nothing butpracticing and scrimmaging against themselves - didn't actually have a field.

So Curry and one of his assistants, George Pugh, hopped in a car and start-ed riding around Atlanta, looking for any patch of grass and goalposts withina 40-minute radius of Georgia State's downtown campus.

“We found a bunch of them. Then we had to find out who ran them,” Curryrecalled. “There was an awful lot of time and effort spent on those kind ofthings, and that's just one example.”

It will all seem worth it on the night of Sept. 2, when the Panthers, an inde-pendent in the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision, play their firstgame against Shorter, an NAIA school. From humble beginnings, they'll runonto a relatively grand stage - the 70,000-seat Georgia Dome, home field of theNFL's Atlanta Falcons, site of the Southeastern Conference championshipgame, venue for two Super Bowls and an Olympics.

“This is the reason why I came here,” said Mark Hogan, who was GeorgiaState's very first player. “I didn't come here to practice all year like we didlast year, but that was part of it. That was preparation for this. It was wellworth it. Now we're here, and we're about to play some real football.”

Good luck, Panthers!
