PASTRY CHEF ‐ NEW Do you enjoy having fun in the kitchen making delicious pastry treats? This class will teach the secrets of making the perfect flaked pastry, creamy fillings, and homemade whipped topping. Campers will also make flaky fruit‐filled popovers, melt‐in‐your mouth cream puffs with golden spun sugar, lemon curd tart, colorful cake pops, and chocolate chip cannoli ‐ straight from New York! Handmade edible embellishments of chocolate, golden spun sugar, and fondant will top these amazing creations! Campers will receive recipes and a journal booklet to record their in‐class notes. CAKE BOSS LOVERS! ‐ NEW Is Cake Boss your favorite show? Have fun learning to design and create a two tier fondant cake from scratch! This camp will be held in a commercial kitchen. Campers will learn to bake the perfect cake, set tier supports, roll and drape fondant, and properly use of a pastry bag. Edible embellishments will be created from fondant, gum paste, chocolate, and sugar glass. Campers will be encouraged to be creative, flexible and to just have fun. At the end of the camp, campers will have an edible masterpiece can proudly enjoy with family and friends. THE ART AND SCIENCE OF CHOCOLATE ‐ NEW Aspiring chocolate connoisseurs will learn the science of tempering chocolate, making custard without curdling, and determining the perfect consistency gnash. Create delicate and delicious chocolate cups filled with raspberry mouse, chocolate éclairs with Bavarian cream, decadent chocolate lava cake with molten chocolate center, melt‐ in‐your‐mouth chocolate truffle pops, and more. EASY APPETIZERS AND SNACKS WITH CHEF CHUCK ‐ NEW It’s as easy as 1, 2, 3! Join us in the kitchen where campers will whip up some of the best kid‐friendly appetizers for afterschool snacks, parties or anytime the munchies take over! While creating healthy and delicious snacks from scratch, campers will talk about kitchen safety. New mouthwatering snacks will be made every day ‐ baking, frying and boiling are included. Some of the appetizers include mini pizzas, caramel corn, pot stickers, deviled eggs, chicken bites and pizza dough. EVERYDAY ITALIAN COOKING Explore the cooking of Rome and Boston’s North End by preparing Cusina Italiano including zuppa (soup), insalata (salad), antipasto (appetizer), pizza, lasagna, sauces and much more. All recipes are prepared with herbs freshly picked by campers from the herb garden located onsite. In this hands‐on camp, campers will learn how to prepare a delicious homemade meal in a snap using a variety of ingredients. Each camper will receive a shopping list and a recipe book to take home. PERFORMING ARTS IMPROV FOR THE BEGINNER ‐ NEW Are you a fan of Whose Line Is It Anyway? Do you know about improv? Improvisation, or improv, is a form of live theatre in which the plot, characters and dialogue of a game, scene or story are made up in the moment. Sometimes improv is purely comedy‐based while other times it can be a mix of both comedy and drama or just drama. Learn the basics of quick thinking and reaction through a week of play and fun through the medium of improvisational action. In addition to great performance training, campers will learn creative writing and thinking, public speaking, collaboration, listening, focus, eye contact and more. Corporations have long used improv techniques to build teamwork and develop creativity and new ideas. Final short acts will be performed on the last day of class. ROCK ROCK UNIVERSITY! Rock University™ brings together young musicians who play any instrument to create a real band in just 5 days. This performance‐based camp focuses on understanding how to arrange and orchestrate your favorite cover songs as well as learning how to write your own original songs in a real rock band. The band has 5 days to come up with a band name and logo, rehearse and then perform your first concert at the end of the week. Campers will need to write, rehearse and record the music as well as create the artwork and promotional posters for the first CD. The band will be guided by professional musicians with

TAYLOR SWIFT AND ADELE...GIRLS ROCK! This rock band camp is ideal for girls who love to sing and play keyboards, guitar and drums. Campers will come together to learn how to play songs from some favorite female recording artists. (Even campers with limited music experience are encouraged to join.) Campers will spend the week learning how to put these songs together as a band, record a CD, and then have a concert debut on Friday afternoon.

Learn all of the basics to start rocking out on that guitar that’s been sitting in the corner for the last 6 months. This exciting introductory guitar camp will have you playing your first songs by the end of day one and wanting to go home and show off what you have learned. Campers will cover basic left and right hand technique, reading tabs, learning rhythms, beginning chords, playing by ear and writing your original songs. At the end of the week, campers will go home with a CD of their music. This is a perfect class for the older beginner with no prior experience. SONGWRITERS STUDIO Writing your own music is one of the greatest things about learning how to play an instrument and Songwriter’s Studio helps piano and guitar students easily understand the music theory that makes songwriting fun. It doesn’t matter if you listen to Beethoven, Billy Joel or Adele ‐ this camp will help you learn how to compose the kind of music that you like. Campers will look at melody lines, chord progressions, song structure and lyric writing with fun exercises as they work towards composing their first hit single or symphony. Campers are encouraged to bring in their favorite songs on CD or iPod so that we can listen to them and learn what songwriting tricks and techniques were used in writing them. PAINTING TO EXPRESS YOURSELF ‐ NEW Painting is a way to relax the mind and create enjoyment in everyday life, and an important part of our creative development! It’s all about color! Learn to mix primary colors to create secondary and tertiary colors. Campers will further develop their command of color by creating a color wheel and learning the basics of blending, shading, and highlighting. Along with painting their own compositions using acrylics on paper and canvas, campers will participate in a special collaborative project. Participants in this painting camp will work together to design and paint on large 4’ panels that will become a traveling wall mural! DRAWING FOR DEPTH ‐ NEW Drawing is a form of self‐expression and a way to record the world around you! This camp will teach campers how to take the picture in your mind and put it to paper. Campers will the basic rules of perspective along with how to create depth in their pictures how to use a simple grid to get the correct scale throughout a drawing. INSPISRED TO CREATE ‐ MOSAIC GARDEN STEPPING STONE ‐ NEW Do you know when mosaics were first introduced or colored glass was first discovered? Explore mosaics with this upbeat and fun introductory class. Campers may choose one of three colorful project designs or create one of their own! Campers will glaze ceramic bisque pieces such as bugs, turtles, dragonflies, etc. that will then be fired and inserted into the design. Learning to cut and fit glass, use a glass grinder, nip ceramic tile, and apply adhesive to a properly prepared surface is all a part of the process. COPTIC BOOKBINDING ‐ NEW
Coptic bookbinding is one of the earliest forms of bookbinding,
employed by the early Copt people of Egypt in the second century AD.
The form consists of sewing through folded sections of pages and then
leaving the stitching exposed on the spine with front and back
hardcovers. The technique uses no glue, and is very different from
modern bookbinding practices. Campers will learn several beautiful
and artistic stitching techniques and use patterned paper, found
objects, beads, ribbon, and more to personalize the covers and pages,
creating handmade journals and albums that will be cherished for

MONSTERS, BUGS AND ZOMBIES ‐ NEW They’re SCARY fun! These stuffed plush creatures are a wonderful way to express your imagination and travel on the wild side while learning basic sewing skills. Different construction methods and tricks will be discussed. Almost any fabric will work and this is a good way to recycle old clothes. Campers can embellish them with just about anything that can be sewn down. Your monsters can be as scary or as loveable as you’d like. LEARN TO KNIT Learn the basics of knitting in this camp. You should have time and the skills to knit a scarf and will gain the knowledge you need to knit up a bunch more after the camp is over. Knitting is a great hobby and there’s more to it than just “knit one, purl two”. Campers will learn several stitch patterns along with learning how to manage color changes that can be incorporated into their scarf. It will be quite unique and fun! Once you are hooked on knitting you will not want to put your knitting needles down! Campers who attended this camp last year are welcome to attend and work on an advanced project. SCRAPBOOKING DESIGNS AND LAYOUT From beginner to advanced, there are lots of techniques to learn when scrapbooking. Campers will learn how to let your photos do the talking. Learn to organize photos, design creative layouts, incorporate memorabilia, design special lettering and use decorative punches and scissors to create your own personalized scrapbook. Supplies provided during camp include: card stock, die cuts, acid free markers, decorative scissors, decorative punches, photo‐ mounting squares, glue, stickers, and more! With help, campers explore how to take their page to the next level so their pictures tell their story. On the first day of camp, please bring your own scrapbook album of choice or sheet protectors to protect photo pages. SOAPS, SALTS AND LIP GLOSS Who knew making your own beauty products could be so easy and so fun? Campers will learn to make soaps, bath salts, lip balm and CHOCOLATE creations. Campers will learn how to make confetti and other shapes to use for your soaps as well as chunky and layered soaps. What makes bath salts different? Aroma and making it all from scratch, of course! Campers will use various lip balm recipes to create flavors the camper prefers. When it’s chocolate time, learn how to melt and mold candies, lollipops and pretzels. Learn the ins and outs of putting out a publication from brainstorming ideas to going to press. Campers will cover design, photography and journalistic styles of writing. After an overview, campers will be able to continue learning more of the total process or concentrate on one area of particular interest. This camp is ideal for yearbook staff, regardless of the yearbook company a school partners with for publications. Campers will work in small groups and individually learn basic animation techniques such as creating multiple cells, 1, 2, and 3 point perspective drawing, figure drawing and the study of facial expressions in anime style. By developing themes common in Anime and Manga tradition, we will learn how to write and create our own Manga stories with real characters, fantasy heroes and amazing locations. By the end of the week, campers will all be a master anime/manga author and illustrator and have a book that’s so good, it might be sent to a publisher. ARCHITECTURE For those who love to build things in 3D, this week gives you the chance to create your own architectural firm and build whatever you imagine… a hockey rink, football stadium, golf course, art gallery, a museum, a roller coaster theme park, an aquarium or virtually anything at all! The camp will divide into several architectural firms and campers will be assigned job titles like project manager, architect, interior designer and artist. Each firm will decide what they will create and then present to the class at week’s end in a fun competition. As future architects, you will learn about perspective drawing and will take time to go outside and draw some of the amazing architecture on the grounds of Cary Academy. Campers will also challenge their creative engineering skills in the classic “egg drop” project where teams will design a device to protect an egg from a 15 foot drop. SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY ADVANCED ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN CAMP ‐ NEW Even Frank Lloyd Wright and Buckminster Fuller used building blocks in school as part of their education towards becoming landmark architects! In this camp, campers will work in teams to take their abstract visions and, using LEGO® Bricks, transform them into architectural masterpieces that they design from scratch while learning about the steps necessary to create a structure from thought or a sketch on a napkin to reality! They will design their game from start to finish, beginning with pencil and paper and ending with a polished, professional‐looking game. Throughout this process, they will learn the fundamentals of 3D Game Development. To develop the games, campers will use OWL Game Creator, which we have developed specifically with our target age range in mind. This software program equips campers with the knowledge and skills they need to pursue Game Design at a professional level. Campers will learn level design, texturing, volumes, lighting and more to build out their 3D world ‐ they can create anything they can imagine. Campers will also learn Game Scripting so that they can program the functionality of their game. CSI ‐ CRIME SCENE INVESTIGATION: A STUDY IN FORENSIC SCIENCE CSI Camp is designed for campers who have a keen interest in science and a desire to learn how methods of observing, gathering, and analyzing scientific evidence play significant roles in solving crimes. Campers will be involved in daily laboratory activities to develop “crime scene” investigation techniques. There is a culminating activity in which campers will work in teams to use all of the knowledge and skills learned throughout the week to solve a fictitious crime and present evidence in "court." Campers will use computers and their applications as useful sources of information and forensic analysis; therefore, you should be comfortable working on a computer. Based on agency caseload at the time, this camp may also include a visit with Scott McInerny and his K‐ 9 partner Tayber, one of Cary Police Department’s canine teams, and/or a visit with a current SBI agent.
