I am proud to present to you the inaugural Capital Gazette 2013 High School Athletes of the Year special commemorative publication.
Each year our high school sports editor and sports writers
select the Capital Gazette Com-munications Player of the Year in each sport as well as one overall male and one overall female athlete of the year with a feature profile of their accomplishments in the newspaper.
This year, we wanted to enhance this feature with the addition of this publication and a special recog-nition dinner. The dinner was held Wednesday night at Michael’s 8th Avenue in Glen Burnie. Special thanks go out to Mary-land Speaker the House Michael Busch, who was our featured guest speaker.
The Athlete of the Year awards are given to the male and female athletes who gave, in our opinion, the best overall athletic performance of the past school year, either by dominating
one sport in a manner that is rarely seen (possibly historic) or by achieving excellence in multiple sports. The Coach of the Year award goes to the coach who we believe made
the biggest impact on a successful team.
The male and female athletes are chosen from among a group that in-cludes the Capital Gazette Commu-nications’ Player of the Year award winners from throughout the school year and a select number of multi-sport standouts. The overall Coach of the Year must have been selected as the Coach of the Year for his or her sport during the school year.
Congratulations to all of the stu-dent athletes chosen this year as well as our Coach of the Year. Please join me in saluting these athletes with wishes for continued suc-cess and many more winning seasons.

Del. Michael Busch, Speaker of the House for the Maryland General As-sembly, served as guest speaker for the first Capital Gazette High School Ath-letes of the Year Showcase on Wednes-day night.
Busch has a broad perspective on athletics — having earned the Rhodes Trophy as most outstanding football player in Anne Arundel County as a senior at St. Mary’s High, served as a high school coach in various sports at his alma mater and worked high school games as an official.
“This is an outstanding accomplish-ment for these athletes. They have worked all their lives to get to this point,” Busch said. “These young men and women sit here before you tonight having achieved the highest level of their respective sport, and they did it through hard work and determination. These youngsters reflect the very best of Anne Arundel County sports.”
Busch pointed out that two of the honorees — Cross Country and Indoor Track Performer of the Year Hale Bul-len (Annapolis) and Girls’ Lacrosse Player of the Year Aislinn Propst (Broadneck) — would enter the Naval Academy on Thursday morning.
Busch is a longtime friend and sup-
porter of the Capital Gazette sports de-partment.
He is a native Marylander, born in Baltimore City on Jan. 4, 1947. His fam-ily moved to Anne Arundel County in 1958, and he graduated from St. Mary’s High School in Annapolis.
After a successful high school foot-ball career in which he suited up for both St. Mary’s and Severn, Busch re-ceived a football scholarship to Temple University.
At Temple, he set freshmen rushing and touchdown records as a running back and was considered a promising NFL prospect before knee injuries cur-tailed his playing career.
He graduated from Temple Univer-sity in 1970 with a Bachelor of Science in history.
After college, he returned to Annapo-lis to teach and coach at St. Mary’s High School from 1973 through 1979.
A history teacher early in his career, Busch was encouraged to run for office by the parents of children he taught and coached in local sports. A Demo-crat, he was first elected to the Mary-land House of Delegates in 1986 and has risen to one of the top positions in Maryland state government as Speaker of the House.
In the area of healthcare, Busch has fought to keep the state’s largest health insurer from being acquired by an out-of-state corporation and led the effort to address the rising cost of medical malpractice insurance premiums that helped keep doctors practicing medi-cine in Maryland.
In addition, Speaker Busch has been instrumental in introducing and pass-ing numerous legislative bills that have helped benefit athletes, coaches and of-ficials throughout the state
He has been appointed to serve on a number of local boards, including the Royal Blue Club of St. Mary’s High School, the Annapolis High School Booster Club, Charles Carroll House, the Banneker Douglass Foundation and the Annapolis Touchdown Club.
Busch also remains active in youth and community athletics. Since 1980, he has worked at the Anne Arundel Coun-ty Department of Recreation and Parks.
Busch is married to Cynthia Abbott Busch and they have two daughters, Erin and Megan. Erin graduated from Annapolis High this year and will play lacrosse at Stetson University in Flori-da. His younger daughter Megan was an all-county indoor track performer and also plays soccer and lacrosse.

Katie Corcoran came into the field hockey season with plenty of expectations. Of course, at South River, that’s usually the case.
But this team was different. The players were seasoned, motivated and talented. Most of all, they were very good. And they were better with Corcoran and her coaching staff behind them.
Corcoran watched as the Seahawks (17-1-1) shut down just about every team who came their way and coasted through the Class 4A state title.
“They were a special group,” said Corcoran, the Capital Gazette Communications Coach of the Year. “They just had something. They were determined and leaders. They were so close, and the camaraderie was there. When you have all those things, you knew that senior class was going to great things.”
Abbey Lawrence and Jennie Milligan were constant threats up top, while Anna Wagner and Alex Watson threaded passes to Brooke Cox, Haley Gray and Kayla White. And in the back, protecting Naomi Johnson in goal, were Taylor Bresnahan and Natalie Poknis — a large part of a defense that allowed only 15 goals in 19 games.
South River, which lost an early-season game to Bryn Mawr and tied Seton Keough — after lightning halted play at halftime — was perfect in Anne Arundel County. Largely thought of as the strongest county for field hockey in Maryland, the Seahawks surrendered just 11 goals over 13 games.
Playing in a tiered schedule, though, made South River’s run that much more impressive. The Seahawks beat Broadneck and Severna Park twice during the regular season — all four games with 2-1 scores — and had to get past them once more in the Class 4A East Region playoffs.
After scoring four goals to beat the Bruins in the region semifinal, South River needed another overtime period against the Falcons. Lawrence scored in each half to give the Seahawks leads in regulation, and she connected with Milligan in overtime for the winner.
“We’ve been in their shoes all four years, and in our senior year, it’s honestly just amazing to get by them,” said Milligan, who shared the captain role with Lawrence. “South River has never beaten them for a region to go to states. For it to be our senior year, it just makes it that much more special.”
Celebrating the East Region title, especially against a program as decorated as Severna Park — which owns a state-record 20 champions — created a euphoric feel for the 22 players on the field. Since 2002, seven of the state champions came out of the East Region — all of them belonging either to Broadneck, Severna Park or South River.
But Corcoran, a member of the coaching staffs of the last four trips to the final — with wins in 2000, 2003 and 2004 and a loss in 2005 — knew she needed to keep her girls balanced.
Lawrence gave the Seahawks a quick lead in the state semifinal against James H. Blake, but they watched it vanish three minutes later. That was it, though. South River outscored the Bengals, 8-0, over the final 40 minutes.
“The years we had big senior classes, everyone expects a lot,” Corcoran said. “They were determined, and people thought, ‘Oh, they have all those seniors
back. They’re going to be good.’”And they were. The Seahawks allowed Catonsville
only two shots during a 6-0 win in the state final. South River got two scores from White around offerings by Watson, Lawrence and Milligan to build a 5-0 lead before Bresnahan closed with a rocket shot off a penalty corner with 2:48 to play.
A standout midfielder in lacrosse — the sport she’ll play at Florida — Bresnahan stuck with field hockey for four years primarily because of the coaching staff, especially Corcoran.
“She’s just such a good person,” Bresnahan said. “You could tell she truly cares about every single player.”
Corcoran wants to spend more time with her two young children and husband, so she announced her resignation in the spring — bringing an end to 13 years with South River’s most successful program.
Megan Atkinson, an assistant for the last eight years, will replace Corcoran, who took what Laura Hoffner began building and kept pushing it into a
powerhouse. Because the competition level is so high within the program, the turnover shouldn’t be much of an issue, though the players and coaches will miss seeing Corcoran at practices and on the sidelines during games.
“I don’t feel like there’s pressure,” Atkinson said. “What we’ve done in the past has always worked for us. We’ve always worked well together. I’m just hoping to continue what we’ve done and not change too much.”
In Corcoran’s final season, the Seahawks sent her out in the best possible way. Though they missed the No. 1 seed in the region playoffs, no team could hold them down for long.
South River closed the season on a 14-game win streak, didn’t smell a loss since Sept. 5 and were able to gather around the field at Washington College and pose for photos with the championship trophy.
That’s exactly what Corcoran envisioned in August.“I have two four-year varsity captains who haven’t been to the state
championship,” Corcoran said. “That was their goal before they left, and they worked so hard to get there. They’ve led this team better than any senior I’ve ever had. There’s something different about this group.”

for Tyler Young, it could be the numbers: 1,149 yards receiving and 16 touchdowns, 28 goals, 33 assists and 85 ground balls. It could be the special
performances: 12 catches for 271 yards and four touchdowns against defending state champion Old Mill or riding his man out of bounds late in an Anne Arundel County championship overtime win. It could be the amazing ability to do all of this after recovering from essentially a broken back.
But in talking to coaches, Young isn’t half as good a player as he is a person.
That’s a pretty good thing considering he was named the Capital Gazette Communications Male Athlete of the Year.
Young, a four-year varsity performer in football and lacrosse, was a member of two teams that combined for a 25-3 record and two county championships. He led the Wildcats with 67 catches — more than doubling all of his receiving numbers from his junior year. He added 61 extra points from the kicker position to lead the county with 157 total points. Moving from the inside slot position to split receiver, the 5-foot-9, 180-pound Young was part of a four-man senior receiving corps that worked well in tandem with quarterbacks Jack Gordon and Cooper Hibbs.
“I was ready for the football season — got with quarterbacks and 7-on-7s and just prepared the whole time,” Young

said. “As soon as I could, I got back into the weight room. I was more focused on the field aspect, my routes and film. It was a special group of guys that was closer as a team than anything else I have known.”
Young has been a high-impact athlete since his early days with the Gambrills Odenton Recreation Council, and coach Chuck Markiewicz saw a great receiver in the offing.
“Coming in, Tyler wanted to be like Brandon Johnson-Farrell and learned from R.J. Harris — not bad role models to tailor your game after,” Markiewicz said. “There was never any doubt that he would be a go-to guy coming into the season. He is simply a difference maker, an athlete who is fast and moves fast all the time.”
Pick an aspect of Young’s game, and it’s hard not to praise him. His routes are as precise as can be, he is able to get up for the grab-balls and good luck tackling him after he breaks initial contact.
“Moving out to the split was a big deal,” Young said. “I’m not a 6-2, 6-3 guy. I knew that I had to use something besides speed to create that extra step of separation. And most of the split routes are short routes, and you get one-on-one matchups with defensive backs, and once I made those catches, my teammates did a great job blocking downfield and creating space for me.”
Those routes came from working with fellow receiver Dillon Tighe, Gordon and Hibbs as well as repetition after repetition guided by offensive coordinator Dave Doy and receivers coach Kevin Necessary.
“He always wanted to play receiver, and he is just electrifying with the ball in his hands,” Necessary said. “Our system is designed to get players open, but his routes were impeccable. He could go in and out off a break as well as anyone, as well as get from zero to 60 as fast as anybody out there. More important, he knows how to control his speed. He just has another gear. He was great at turning six-yard hitches into 50-yard touchdowns.”
The highest praise Markiewicz ever gives a player of his comes
when he says that if he had a daughter, he would want that player to marry her. An oft-used phrase, but it does not diminish the importance of the statement.
“I knew from even before he was in our program that Tyler was a tremendous athlete,” Markiewicz said. “I didn’t know that this was going to be his greatest attribute — his leadership and his ability to be a role model for the younger guys. If my players can be even half the kid he was — not even the player — they will be in a good spot.”
Young was rewarded with numerous accolades after the Wildcats completed a 10-1 season. He was named All-County and Second Team Big School All-State.
But his senior year was just getting started.
Having missed virtually all of his junior lacrosse season, the Towson commit was primed and ready to get back on the field.
“I was itching real bad to get out there,” Young said. “There was a
whole new energy, a whole new aggressiveness. I did not want to start out slow — not with the team we had.”
Necessary, who coached Young all four years in two sports, values his scoring, but harps on all the old-school attributes he possesses, including the 85 ground balls. Necessary played with Severna Park and Maryland standout Paul Gillette, who became famous in the game for his ground-ball aptitude.
“He was a throwback, two-way guy who did what was needed, and that is like Tyler,” Necessary said. “Tyler’s game is such that he can be so valuable in so many ways. He might have three goals, he might have two assists or he just might shut down the opposing top attackman. He is clearing every night with the best of them. He just has a great lacrosse IQ.”
Tyler helped the Wildcats, Class 4A East Region semifinalists, to a 15-2 record and did it by leading in a way he learned during his injured
junior year.“Last year, he learned how to lead
in a different way, just talking and having teammates listen,” Necessary said. “What he sees on the sidelines and passed on was invaluable. He did it in both sports, and this was a guy who typically led by example in the past.”
Young’s spring accolades included being accorded All-American status as well as being named Capital-Gazette Communications Male Lacrosse Player of the Year. And that sets the tone for his next athletic step — coming in and making an immediate impact for the Tigers, who finished 10-8 and Colonial Athletic Association champions.
“Towson is an up-and-coming program, and I’m just trying to prepare myself the best way I can,” said Young, who is playing in a Howard County summer league filled with Division I and former Major Lacrosse League players. “I want to take my offense to another level and still stay a true two-way middie. I am always going to be motivated to do better.”
According to Markiewicz and Necessary, all the accolades pale to Young as a person and further validates the Arundel system, which continues to cycle in leaders and athletes and produce winning programs.
Young learned from Harris, Billy Cosh, Bobby Partilla and others on the gridiron as a freshman, then took in lessons from Greg Korvin, Mike Quick, Kevin Costa and other seniors in lacrosse. He learned how to lead, and ever since injuring his back, fulfilled his role in the cycle by passing on those lessons.
“Tyler was never a complainer,” Markiewicz said. “He was always team oriented. He never suffered from the Disease of Me. We use our offseason workouts as a character filter to see who is going to show up, who is going to whine and complain and who is going to step forward and lead. Tyler always fit into the last group.”
Necessary concurs.“He learned early what the
standards were at Arundel, and he bought into it even before Day 1,” Necessary said. “More importantly, he is passing it on. He is helping the leaders of the next teams — preparing them to succeed. He helped me become a better coach without even knowing it.”

coming off a state championship in field hockey, Taylor Bresnahan had a tough decision to make.
A three-sport athlete through her first three years at South River, Bresnahan opted to drop basketball — her first love — to focus on lacrosse
to prepare for college. Seventy-one points and another Anne Arundel County title later, and she’s got no regrets.
“My freshman and sophomore year, I was convinced I was going to play basketball in college,” said Bresnahan, the Capital Gazette Communications’ Female Athlete of the Year. “It’s not that I didn’t like lacrosse, but it wasn’t my favorite. Then I started playing Maryland United in
freshman year, and the more I played, the more I liked it.”And the better she got at it.Bresnahan was the Seahawks’ most dynamic play-maker.
At the center of the draws, she consistently set up her teammates for easy scoring opportunities and finished with 48 goals and 23 assists. With Bresnahan healthy and rested, South River opened the season with a 4-1 record and responded to a 13-10 loss to Archbishop Spalding by winning 11 consecutive games en route to the Class 4A/3A East Region final.
“I know she took off basketball so she could focus on lacrosse,” Seahawks lacrosse coach Kim McNemar said.

“And she worked her butt off just so she could be ready for lacrosse. I was very excited about that. I like having multi-sport athletes. But for Taylor, the last couple years, I think it kind of burned her out.”
A key piece of one of South River’s greatest scholastic athletic calendars, Bresnahan was a two-way standout on the field hockey team that swept Anne Arundel County — including three wins against Broadneck and Severna Park — and won the Class 4A title.
Bresnahan provided a solid presence in the backfield, where she helped the Seahawks (17-1-1) hold opponents to 15 goals in 19 games. A rusher on penalty corners and the owner of one of the county’s hardest shots, Bresnahan scored seven goals and collected five assists.
But it was when they came that showed her worth.
“She was a leader and determined and strong and confident,” South River field hockey coach Katie Corcoran said. “She really came in this year ready to work as hard as she possibly could to win a state championship. She was so focused and so driven. Even though hockey is not her No. 1 sport, she gave it everything she could, and it showed.”
On top of helping Natalie Poknis and Brooke Szachnowicz minimize the scoring chances in front of goalkeeper Naomi Johnson, Bresnahan scored twice against Severna Park for a 2-1 win on Oct. 17 to close the regular season with a 12-1-1 record.
Bresnahan scored on a first-half penalty corner to give the Seahawks a 1-0 lead. When Sydney Jolliffe beat Johnson in the 40th minute, South River needed to find another answer. It took until overtime, but Bresnahan finally provided it.
After getting the ball in the midfield, Bresnahan took off down the right sideline and slipped past Maeve Doherty to get a clear look at the cage. Instead of passing to Abbey Lawrence — the Seahawks’ scoring leader — Bresnahan saw an opening and drove the ball by Liza Mata with 3 minutes, 26 seconds to play.
“Bresnahan, I don’t think you can defend her,” Falcons coach Anne Andrews said. “She always plays well against us. In that game, it was all her. She’s a fantastic player.”
South River needed another overtime to beat Severna Park, 3-2, in the Class 4A East Region final and outscored James H. Blake and Catonsville, 14-1, on the way to its fourth state tournament.
Bresnahan scored the Seahawks’ sixth goal in a 6-0 win over the Comets, who managed just two shots — one on goal — over 60 minutes.
“I love field hockey so much, and my coaches made it 100 times better,” said Bresnahan, the Capital-Gazette Communications’ Field Hockey Player of the Year. “If I didn’t have the coaches
I had, I wouldn’t have played field hockey.”Bresnahan decided not to forgo her senior
year in basketball to rest up for lacrosse season. Though the Seahawks made it back to the Class 4A East Region final without her, Bresnahan — who averaged 10.7 points in 23 games as a junior — certainly would’ve helped in a loss to North Point.
But the time off proved beneficial on the lacrosse fields.
In addition to leading South River with 48 goals, Bresnahan collected 44 draw controls, 33 ground balls and 23 assists to create another dangerous, all-around weapon on a team loaded with them.
Bresnahan helped the Seahawks open the season with a 10-9 win over Broadneck by scoring the first and last goals and winning the final draw.
“Taylor is a beast,” said Kacie Longo, who scored 34 goals and had 29 assists during South River’s run through Anne Arundel County. “She’s amazing. She’s always been someone I watch. I used to go to the games in eighth grade and she was a freshman. She’s always been someone I look up to.”
The Seahawks lost to Century — the eventual Class 3A/2A state champion — and came up short against the Cavaliers, but cruised to the
county championship and into the region final. In seven games against Broadneck, Severna
Park, Annapolis, Century and Archbishop Spalding — which combined for a 68-24 record — Bresnahan scored 17 goals of her 48 goals. She had nine in three games with Broadneck, including three in South River’s 14-13 loss in the region final.
“The first words to come to mind are strong-willed leader,” McNemar said. “I feel like she put it all out there. She was dependable, and when you talk about someone in the midfield, she was the leader.”
Bresnahan will try to do the same things at Florida, which lost to Syracuse in the NCAA quarterfinal.
A freshman when South River won its last lacrosse title in 2010, Bresnahan wanted to end her high school career the same way. Instead, the Bruins used that one-goal win to roll through Catonsville and Eleanor Roosevelt to end their 10-year title drought.
Still, Bresnahan regrets nothing. With a year like this, it’s easy to see why.
“Even though we didn’t make it as far as we wanted to, I wouldn’t change anything,” Bresnahan said. “Everyone cared about each other so much, and we were all close. That’s what I’m going to remember the most.”

Chaney worked out of the backfield and as a passing option to total 2,268 yards of offense and 18 touchdowns to help South River (8-3) get into the Class 4A East Region playoffs in back-to-back years.
A Monmouth recruit, Chaney spent time on special teams and defense, too. Wherever the Seahawks needed him, he was there. Chaney came up with an interception late in a Week 10 win against Old Mill to clinch South River’s spot in the playoffs — the first time the program’s been to consecutive postseason berths since 1984 to 1986.
Chaney rushed 159 times for a 9.4-yard average and 16 touchdowns. He scored twice through the air and brought in 59 receptions to give Connor Cox another dangerous weapon and open opportunities for leading receiver Eric Young.
“He is good at so many things,” Seahawks coach Lance Clelland said. “As a running back and a receiver, to be a top-10 player in the area in both says a lot.”

Smith led the Bruins to their first county title in 10 years and the Class 4A East Region championship and a third-place finish at the state met. All this after a knee injury kept her out for most of her junior season.
Despite coming up short in each race — by a little more than a second to Annapolis’ Sarah Sykora — Smith’s consistency allowed Broadneck to score points and stay ahead.
“As soon as she started her freshman year, you knew she was a clutch runner,’’ Broadneck coach Brianna Kelly said. “She knows what she needs to do, she knows what she wants and she goes out there and gets it.’’

“She was going to be the leader on this team, and they were not going to down without a fight,” Broadneck coach Karen Tengwall said. “She gave it her all in every game, and as a captain, she made it very clear to her teammates that not playing well was not an option.”
