• Very few bullet points• Very few words• Your presentation is not a document
- It’s a presentation!
USE THE K.I.S.S. PRINCIPLE
August 28, 2013 10High Quality Presentations
NOT THIS PRINCIPLE
• Be sure to use very few bullet points because the more bullet points you use the harder it is to follow along and to listen, really listen, to what the speaker is sharing because you are reading and not listening. I’ll bet you’re not listening – are you?
• Don’t use lots of fonts for emphasis or lots of words to get your point across. Instead use white space and fewer words. After all, you want people to engage in the general concepts and discussion and not to learn from reading. Some people will put on their evaluation that you just read from the PowerPoint slide and THAT’S NOT WHAT YOU WANT. That’s not what you want – Right?
• I’m going to repeat what I had on the previous slide because I really want you to get this concept down and I couldn’t find an alternative way to say it. Your presentation is not a document. It’s a presentation! So think about the audience member and how hard it’s going to be to read this slide. Yes you had a lot to say but you didn’t need to put it on this slide. You have other ways of sharing information and I’ve addressed that later in this presentation.
• Can you read this font size from the back of room? If you can, you have superhuman eyesight and the government probably has a job for you in a secret building, in a secured location, where you get to interact with other superhumans as well. Maybe the soda machine is free there too
• Keep most of your points in the top 2/3 of the page and don’t mix a lot of visuals with a lot of text either. You want and deserve to be a “Top 10” speaker and you’ll be one if you follow these simple rules.
