After going 8-5-8 and reaching the Big South Tour-nament semifinals in 2008, the High Point University women’s soccer team will feature a new look in 2009 when it kicks off the program’s first season under head coach Marty Beall.

Beall came to High Point after six years as head coach at Francis Marion, where he compiled an overall record of 56-44-7. He also led the team through a successful transition from Division II to Division I during his time as head coach.

HPU returns 16 letterwinners in 2009, including 13 student-athletes who started at least one game in 2008. Led by senior Laura Eldridge and junior Sara Rager, these returners accounted for 62 percent of the scoring and 68 percent of the points last season.

“I think we are coming allong really well,” said Beall. “The girls are adjusting to a new way of playing, much more possession oriented. I am really impressed with the work effort of our returning players and I think throughout the year we will grow as a team.”

GOAlkeeperSHigh Point is very deep in goal with two returners who started games last season. Senior Marissa Abbott returns as the starting goal-keeper this year after starting the final 11 games in 2008. Abbott compiled a 0.92 goals-against-average last season, the second-lowest single-season total in HPU Division I history. An all-around top-level goalkeeper, Abbott is a good shot blocker who un-derstands the game at a high level and does a good job organizing her defense in front of her. The senior holds the HPU Division I record for career wins with 14 and career shutouts with 12.

Backing up Abbott and pushing for a starting role will be sophomore Andrea Ritchie. As a true freshman in 2008, Ritchie started eight games and compiled a 1.04 GAA, the fourth-best single-season average in HPU’s 10-year Division I history.

deFenSeThe defense should be a strong point for the Panthers in 2009, as they return four players who combined to make 73 of a possible 84 starts in 2008.

The backline will be anchored by sophomores Brielle Spencer and Danniel Rosado in the middle. Both players are extremely hard workers who have em-

braced a leadership role in the back, organizing the defenders and winning balls in front of goal.

Redshirt freshman Lindsey Cooper will see plenty of time in her first season, coming off the bench as a third center back to spell both Spencer and Rosado.

The outside back position is one of the deepest on the team. Senior captain Courtney Spotts and sopho-more Robin Pecoraro return as the starters in 2009 after starting a combined 39 games last season. Both starters are quality one-on-one defenders who possess great speed and will get forward to provide service into the box in the attack.

Backing up Pecoraro and Spotts will be senior Janine Lind as well as freshmen Janay Whittaker, Alex Cran-ston, Casey Greco and Jenny Butler. All four fresh-men could contribute in their first collegiate season.

MidFieldHigh Point University’s midfield will take on a dif-ferent look this season with four attacking midfield-ers positioned above a holding defensive midfielder in the center of the pitch. The team will also have to make up for the departures of senior Renee Hitch-cock and freshman Karra Damascus, who combined for 12 goals and 25 points.

Leading the attack from the midfield this season will be Rager, a second-team All-Big South honoree in 2008. She finished the season as High Point’s leader with 16 points on four goals and eight assists. A strong player with the ball, Rager possesses great vision and a superb ability to create for herself and her teammates. The Silver Spring, Md., native finished second in the Big South in assists in 2008 and is already third all-time in the High Point Division I career-record book with 14 assists over her first two seasons.

Joining Rager in the attack will be fellow junior Jil-lie Johnston and sophomores Laura Shupe and Katie Taber. Johnston played in 14 games last season and scored five points on two goals and an assist. She will provide possession and service in the attack. Taber played in all 21 games in 2008 and notched nine points on three goals and three assists. A great one-on-one player, Taber provides an offensive threat this year as she slides into the starting lineup. Shupe re-turns to the midfield after playing in 21 games with 15 starts last season. The Cary, N.C., native will look to become a larger part of the attack this season after notching three goals as a freshman in 2008.

2009 Women’s Soccer

Off the bench, look for senior Danielle Eldridge and freshmen Kaitlin Harris and Kim Grennan to con-tribute in attacking roles during the season.

Playing between the attack and the backline as a de-fensive midfielder will be Laura Eldridge. The senior captain’s six goals in 2008 is tops among returning players as she played all over the field in 2008. In 2009, the Knoxville, Tenn., native will play as a hold-ing midfielder, keeping possession and allowing the team to transition from defense to offense. She will also serve as a threat on set pieces due to her skill in the air.

Senior captain Lauren Stockell and sophomore Ra-chel Parker will provide quality depth in the defensive midfield in 2009. Stockell is a versatile player who has battled injuries in each of her past two seasons. Now healthy in 2009, she can be used as a central defender and attacker as well as a holding midfielder.

FOrWArdSStarting up top for the Panthers in 2009 is freshman Christa White. A hard-working forward, White is strong in the air and can possess the ball at the top of the attack. White comes to High Point from Cary Christian High School in nearby Cary, N.C., where she earned All-State honors in 2008.

Danielle Eldridge, Taber and senior Ashley Holleran could all see time at the front of the attack while re-lieving White

THe SCHedUleThe Panthers will play a challenging out-of-confer-ence schedule in 2009, which should leave them well prepared for league competition.

The team begins the season with back-to-back away games on Friday, Aug. 21 and Sunday, Aug. 23 against ACC opponents Wake Forest and Virginia Tech.

2009 Schedule

HPU will then open up its home schedule on Friday, Aug. 28 with a game against MAAC regualar-season champion Loyola (Md.).

After a road game at Old Dominion, the Panthers will return to Vert Stadium to host the High Point University Invitational on Sept. 4 and 6. High Point will face off against the College of Charleston and regional-rival Elon in the two-day event.

Other non-conference games include road games at Wofford, UNC Greesnboro and Campbell and home games against Davidson and Belmont.

“We have stepped up our non-conference schedule this season,” said Beall. “There is no easy non-confer-ence game this season and I really think it will benefit us in the long run. Especially when it comes time for conference play, I think the team will be so used to playing at a high level that it will help us.”

The Panthers get five home games during conference play this season including home tilts against Radford, Coastal Carolina and Charleston Southern, the top three teams in the Big South preseason poll. The team also hosts Liberty and VMI and will play at Gardner-Webb, Winthrop, Presbyterian and UNC Asheville.

Marty Beall

Marty Beall steps in as head coach in 2009, becoming the fifth head coach in the program’s 17-year history.

Beall comes to HPU after coaching for 10 seasons at Francis Marion, including the last six seasons as the head coach. While at FMU, Beall helped transition the Patriot program from success at the Division II level to continued success at the Division I level. In his head coaching career, Beall owns a 56-44-7 record despite having to play outside a conference and consistently scheduling nationally and regionally-recognized programs, including teams from the Atlantic Coast Conference, Southeastern Conference and Atlantic 10.

During his tenure at Francis Marion, Beall guided the Patriots to four double-digit win totals and four winning seasons while posting a 33-10-4 (74.5 percent) mark at home. Beall is also familiar with the Big South Conference having crafted a 14-6-1 career mark against current members of the Big South Conference, including a 2-0 record against High Point.

Under Beall’s tutelage, several Francis Marion players garnered league and national recognitions. Beall produced six Peach Belt Conference (PBC) All-Conference team selections during his tenure along with four PBC All-Tournament honorees. In addition, four players developed into National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-Region performers including a pair of first-team selections. Beall’s pupils also garnered NSCAA/adidas All-America and Division I All-Independent team accolades.

In addition to success on the field, Beall’s teams have also demonstrated excellence in the classroom. Francis Marion earned four NSCAA Team Academic Awards during Beall’s tenure. The award recognizes programs that maintain a 3.0 cumulative team GPA. FMU’s 2006-07 squad ranked third among all NCAA Division I programs with a 3.59 GPA. Individually, student-athletes under Beall’s guidance have also shined earning five NSCAA/adidas Scholar All-Region and two NSCAA/adidas Scholar All-America honors.

Prior to becoming the Patriots’ head coach in 2003, Beall served four seasons at FMU as assistant coach to Murray Hatzler, who established the program in 1995. While an assistant, Beall helped lead Francis Marion to one of its two NCAA Division II national tournament appearances in 2000.

Beall spent two seasons (1997-98) as the women’s assistant coach at the College of Notre Dame in Baltimore, Md., before joining the FMU program in 1999. In addition to his collegiate coaching experience, Beall has also coached at the youth league, high school and club levels and served as head coach of the South Carolina girls ODP staff for seven years

A two-year player at the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore, Beall served as captain of the 1994 squad. He also played on season for the nationally-ranked Montgomery (Junior) College in Rockville, Md. Beall was an All-State prep performer as a senior at Damascus (Md.) High School and played eight seasons for the Bethesda Soccer Club.

He holds a USSF “B” license and the Premier Diploma from the NSCAA and is an NSCAA Associate staff coach. He is currently on the Region III ODP staff and is the head coach of the Under-16 girls team at the Piedmont Triad Football Club. He also served as the Director of Coaching for the Florence Soccer Association.

A native of Damascus, Md., Beall (35) earned his bachelor’s degree in psychology from Francis Marion in 2003.

Brandi Fontaine

Brandi Fontaine begins her first season at High Point University after joining the Panther women’s soccer program as an assistant coach on Marty Beall’s staff.

Fontaine followed Beall from Francis Marion University, where the two spent the last four seasons together. Fontaine served as an assistant coach for Beall last season after completing a stellar three-year playing career at FMU from 2005-07. In addition to on-field coaching and player development, Fontaine will serve as the Panthers’ recruiting coordinator.

A three-year letterwinner for the Patriots, Fontaine (formerly Sutphin) battled injuries but still played in 33 career matches with 20 starts, recording three goals and 11 assists. She served as team captain during her senior season and ranked in the top 25 in the nation in assists as a junior. Her FMU career highlights include scoring the game-winning goal versus Presbyterian College in 2006. Fontaine began her collegiate playing career at West Virginia University, playing in five games as a freshman for a Mountaineer squad that went 15-6-0 and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

In addition to her solid play on the field, Fontaine was also a standout performer in the classroom, earning Peach Belt Conference Presidential Honor Roll and FMU Swamp Fox Athletic-Academic Honor Roll recognition for three consecutive years.

Fontaine earned her bachelor’s degree in mass communication from Francis Marion in December of 2007.

A native of Davidsonville, Md., Fontaine is a product of South River High School located in Edgewater, Md. As a prep performer at SRHS, Fontaine garnered 2002 first-team All-State, All-Region and All-South accolades. She finished her prep career with 24 goals and 28 assists. Fontaine was also a member of the Crofton United club team.

She holds an Advanced National Diploma from the NSCAA and is the coach of the Under-14 girls team at the Piedmont Triad Football Club.

Fontaine married her husband, Keith, in the summer of 2008. Her twin sister, Jacque Sutphin, who also played at FMU, spent the 2008 campaign as a graduate assistant women’s soccer coach for the Citadel.

The Richard F. Vert Track and Soccer Stadium is one of the finest facilities of its kind, with the perfect size and amenities for soccer, track & field and lacrosse. Reopened in the spring of 2007, the stadium features seating for 1,100, a press box, hospitality suite, rest rooms and a consession stand. It has an oversize scoreboard with full video and graphic capabilities.

The natural turf field is ideal for men’s and women’s soccer and Vert Stadium will also be home of HPU women’s lacrosse in its first season of 2011.

The modern track has field event areas for the high jump, pole vault, long jump, triple jump, shot put and javelin. The track is composed of an IAAF-certified Beynon surface. It has the widest radius turns that IAAF allows, making it ideal for fast times, particularly in the long sprint events.

The stadium hosted Big South Championships for wom-en’s soccer in 2003 and 2008 and men’s soccer in 2005 and will once again host the men’s soccer championship in 2009. In the spring of 2009, the track & field team hosted its first home meet at the new facility.

24 2009 HPU Panthers

The 2008 High Point University women’s soccer team finished the season with an 8-5-8 record overall and a 3-2-4 record in the Big South. It was the sec-ond-straight year and the fourth in five years that the Panthers finished the season with a winning record. HPU advanced to the semifinals of the Big South Tournament before falling to Coastal Carolina by a score of 1-0 to finish the season.

HPU’s five losses in 2008 marked the fewest in the program’s 17-year history and the team’s eight draws established a program record. The Panthers closed with a flurry, losing just twice in their final 11 con-tests of the regular season.

The team thrived on the road in 2008, losing just two matches at road or neutral sites. Overall, HPU went 5-2-5 away from Vert Stadium for a .625 winning percentage.

The Panthers were a balanced team in 2008 with 11 different players scoring a goal and 14 different play-ers earning at least one point. Sophomore Sara Rager, led the team with 16 points on four goals and eight assists and she was followed closely by freshman Karra Damascus and junior Laura Eldridge, who each had 15 points. Rager’s eight assists was the second-best total in the conference, one behind the conference leader.

Senior Renee Hitchcock, Eldridge and Rager all earned All-Big South honors in 2008 with Eldridge earning first-team accolades and Rager and Hitchcock receiving second-team honors. In addition, freshman Taylor Ray was named to the All-Freshman team.

Several HPU players moved up the record books in 2008. Eldridge moved into fourth on the school’s Di-vision I career records in both points and goals while Rager improved to third in assists after just two sea-sons. Rager’s eight assists tied the school’s Division I record previously held solely by Ryan Hays. In the net, junior Marissa Abbot became the school’s Division I leader in career shutouts and wins. Her five shutouts on the season tied her own single-season record and her 0.92 goals-against average was the second-best single season mark in the team’s Division I history.

Numerous freshmen emerged as key con-tributors during the 2008 season. In addi-tion to Damascus and Ray, freshmen Katie Taber, Laura Shupe, Robin Pecoraro, Dan-niel Rosado and Brielle Spencer all played large roles for the Panthers. In the midfield, Taber earned nine points on three goals and three assists while Shupe added three goals of her own. Pecoraro, Rosado and Spencer combined to make-up three quarters of an HPU backline which allowed just 1.05 goals per game.

reGUlAr SeASOnHigh Point opened its 2008 campaign with a pair of home contests at Vert Stadium, dropping a 3-0 decision to Old Dominion in the opener before rebounding with a 1-1 tie against Wofford. Ten HPU rookies made their collegiate debuts during the weekend. Ray scored the first goal of her career and the inaugural tally of the season in the open-ing two minutes of HPU’s game against Wofford.

The Panthers kicked off a stretch of eight of nine con-tests away from home the following week as the team posted an undefeated record in two games, earning a scoreless tie at Chattanooga and a 1-0 victory over USC Upstate. Freshman goalkeeper Andrea Ritchie tallied a pair of shutouts, holding opponents scoreless for 200 minutes. Shupe scored her first collegiate goal against USC Upstate for the only tally of the week for HPU.

High Point extended its undefeated streak to six games with a 2-0-1 mark during the third week to bring its season record to 3-1-3. The Panthers played to a 1-1 tie at Elon before capturing the tournament crown at the MTSU Classic by posting wins over Ala-bama A&M and Middle Tennesse State. HPU tallied eight goals for the week after scoring just two goals in the first four games of the season Eldridge netted four goals in the week including HPU’s first hat trick since the 2004 campaign. Damascus also recorded three goals. High Point completed a stretch of five games in 10 days with three wins and two ties, and outshot its opponents 57-40 for the week. Eldridge, Damascus and Ray were all named to the MTSU Classic All-Tournament team.

The Panthers’ unbeaten streak came to an end with a close, 1-0, loss at the College of Charleston, but the team recovered the following week to earn its fourth draw of the season at Georgia Southern with a 4-4 double overtime decision. Hitchcock doubled her career-goal total by tallying a pair of scores against the Eagles

2009 Women’s Soccerclose the non-conference portion of its schedule. Rager led HPU to the win with a pair of goals and two assists, becoming the third player with a multi-goal performance on the season. The six points in the game was a career high for the sophomore. Abbott made her season debut for the Panthers and earned the shutout victory, giving her an HPU career record of eight.

The Panthers extended their win streak to three games and their undefeated streak to four following a pair of shutout wins over Big South foes UNC Asheville and Winthrop. In their first home contest in over a month, the Panthers defeated Winthrop, 2-0, in front of a school-record crowd of 1,493.

HPU’s undefeated streak ended at five games after the team posted a 1-1 mark in two Big South games the following week, earning a key road win at Liberty before dropping a disappointing double-overtime loss to Charleston Southern. Down, 1-0, against Liberty, HPU rallied with three unanswered goals, including the game winner from Rager for a 3-1 victory. The Liberty win gave HPU a 3-0 start in Big South play for just the second time in program history. The team was unable to go 4-0 though, as it dropped a hard fought 2-1 decision to CSU in double overtime. It was the Panthers’ first loss in four weeks.

High Point would finish the regular season with a re-cord of 0-1-4 with ties against Presbyterian, Radford, Gardner-Webb and Coastal Carolina and a 3-1 loss to VMI. Against Gardner-Webb, the Panthers achieved a program-record tying eighth shutout and Abbott matched the school record with her fifth shutout of the year.

pOSTSeASOnHigh Point hosted the 2008 Big South tournament in Vert Stadium. In their opening round game, the Pan-thers improved to 6-4 in tournament openers with a 3-2 win over Charleston Southern. Damascus became the fourth player of the season for HPU with a multi-goal performance with two scores against the Lady Buccaneers. The team could not sustain the success however, losing in the semifinals to Coastal Carolina by a score of 1-0. Both Damascus and Abbott gar-nered Big South All-Tournament accolades for their strong play throughout the team’s two games.

High Point’s 2008 season continued the Panther’s tra-dition of being one of the top teams in the Big South Conference. HPU will look to continue to build on that success as the team enters the 2009 season.

High point University president

dr. nidO QUBeinDr. Nido Qubein believes in creating significance – both in

his own life and in the lives he touches. He is a man of diverse interests and talents, and uses the life God has given him to cre-ate a legacy that reaches far and wide. Dr. Qubein came to the United States as a teenager with little knowledge of English, no contacts and only $50 in his pocket. His life has been an amazing success story.

Having graduated from High Point University in 1970, it is poetic that Dr. Qubein would be pursued as its seventh president in 2005. He immediately began a campaign to transform the uni-versity, with $300 million being invested in academic programs, student life and facilities. HPU has completed or is constructing 15 new buildings and two stadiums, in addition to renovating 27 other structures on campus. That includes all athletic facilities, with the construction of the Steele Center, Vert Stadium and Wil-lard Stadium, and the renovation of the Millis Center. The HPU campus has grown from 90 acres to 180 acres. Most recently, the University Center, the Plato S. Wilson School of Commerce and the Nido R. Qubein School of Communication were opened to students. Dr. Qubein also teaches a required course called The President’s Seminar on Life Skills, teaching freshmen how to de-velop such skills as self-esteem, leadership, communication and time management.

Dr. Qubein is the recipient of the highest awards given for professional speakers including the Cavett (known as the Oscar of professional speaking), the Speakers Hall of Fame, Horatio Alger Award for Distinguished Americans and The Order of the Long Leaf Pine (North Carolina’s highest civilian honor) and Sales and Marketing International’s Ambassador of Free Enterprise. Toastmasters International named him the Top Business and Commerce Speaker and awarded him the Golden Gavel Medal. He served as president of the National Speakers Association, which has a membership of 4,000 professionals, and is the founder of the National Speakers Association Foundation, where the highest award for Philanthropy is named for him. Dr. Qubein has been the recipient of many honors including the Ellis Island Medal of Honor and induction into Beta Gamma Sigma, the honor society for business leadership.

Dr. Qubein’s business savvy led him to help start a bank in 1986 and today he serves on the board and chairs the executive committee of BB&T, a Fortune 500 financial corporation with $130 billion in assets and 30,000 employees. He is also chairman of Great Harvest Bread Company, which has 218 stores in 42 states, and he serves on the board of La-Z-Boy Corporation, one of the world’s largest and most recognized furniture retailers. He is a former board member of the YMCA of the USA, which oversees 2,600 YMCAs across the country.

Dr. Qubein has written a dozen books and recorded scores of audio and video learning programs. His books are translated in 20 languages and sold worldwide. He is an active speaker and consultant addressing business and professional groups.

His foundation provides scholarships to 48 deserving young people each year. To-date the Qubein Foundation has granted more than 600 scholarships, worth over $4 million.

ACAdeMiCS AT HiGH pOinT UniverSiTYThe most important thing to consider in choosing a college or university

is the institution’s expectation of its faculty. Good professors are actively in-volved in both teaching and scholarly activity, such as research, but institutions and their faculties tend to give priority to one or to the other. In a recently completed study, the prestigious Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching concluded that often, at the research institutions, “undergradu-ates are seriously neglected,” in part because they are often taught by graduate students. By contrast, at High Point, you will be taught by career teachers who care about students. Currently, 78 percent of the faculty have doctorates or other terminal degrees; others have one or more master’s degrees.

Although High Point University is an academic institution, your educa-tion is not complete if, in the process of learning, you have not inculcated moral values without which success in life and work is at risk. Therefore, the University emphasizes the teaching of ethics across the curriculum, and all degree candidates must successfully complete at least one course in ethics. Options include Business Ethics; Christian Ethics; Ethics in Professionalism for Accounting; Ethical Conflicts in Information Technology; Environmental Ethics; Ethical Traditions; Faith, Ethics, and Wholeness; Families, Values, and Ethics; and Social Ethics.

THe HiGH pOinT UniverSiTY CAMpUSIn the midst of a $300 million new-construction and

renovation program, the campus of High Point University is currently experiencing the greatest period of growth in its history.

The University Center (above) opened on August 21, 2009 with a total of 277,000 square feet. The $65 million building has luxury residential space for 500 students, a 200-seat movie theater, a convenience store, an entire floor of study areas and multiple dining venues. Included in the University Center are The Point Sports Grille, an interactive sports enter-tainment restaurant and community gaming center similar to an ESPN Zone, the Great Day Bakery, where students will be able to dine on fresh-baked breads, sandwiches, Panini, fresh salads and pastries, and 1924 Prime Steakhouse, which will serve steaks, fresh fish and poultry entrees and unique vegetarian options.

The plato S. Wilson School of Commerce (top right) is a $16 million, 60,000-square-foot building named in honor of Plato S. Wilson, a 40-year furniture sales and manufacturer’s

representative for companies including Heritage, Henredon and Henkel-Harris. The new building contains several spaces dedicated to business endeavors, such as a New York Stock Exchange-style investment trading room, complete with a real stock ticker and Reuters trading software, as well as a Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation.

The state-of-the-art nido r. Qubein School of Commu-nication (bottom right) houses HPU’s five communication-based majors: Electronic Media Production, Games and Interactive Communication, Journalism, Media and Popular Culture Studies, and Strategic Communication. The facility is equipped with an incredible array of high-tech instruc-tional equipment and spaces including two high-definition TV production studios, computer labs, a multi-track audio recording studio, observation decks, 12 editing suites with Final Cut Pro and Pro Tools editing systems, a games/inter-active communication development studio, classrooms and faculty offices, a library lounge with rare first-edition books, and the new HPU Internet radio station.

CAMpUS liFe AT HpUWith its beautiful campus containing modern

facilities, wooded acreage and well-manicured gardens, High Point University provides an ideal atmosphere for teaching and learning. Located in the city of High Point, N.C., the campus is spacious and open. The campus has expanded from 90 acres to 180 acres, with new buildings and spectacular amenities for High Point University students.

Several new residence halls have been built, includ-ing Blessing Hall, a $10 million facility made possible by the generous lead gift of one anonymous donor who requested it be called “Blessing.” It is loaded with conveniences that make it a prototype for 21st-century college residence halls. It offers 240 fully furnished, private bedrooms arranged in suites with living rooms, kitchens and dining areas. Residents enjoy spacious common areas, computer lounges, conference areas, laundry rooms and elevators.

Slane Student Center is in the middle of campus. This $6.5 million, 90,000-square-foot building con-nects to the original Slane Student Center via a two-

story atrium and features a high-performance aerobics room, rock-climbing wall, indoor track, fully equipped weight room, food court, dramatic inside and outside basketball courts, outdoor swimming pool, sand vol-leyball courts, and a grand student atrium with billiard tables and sitting areas.

The earl n. phillips School of Business is a new 27,000-square-foot building that is the home for the more than 1,000 undergraduate students pursuing a de-gree in one of High Point University’s 12 undergraduate majors and Master of Business Administration graduate degree. The facility features a 200-seat, tiered lecture hall, four smaller lecture rooms, traditional classrooms, a spacious auditorium, private study rooms, computer labs and faculty offices.

Hayworth park is an extraordinary outdoor ex-perience. Featuring a network of trails and bridges, spectacular waterfalls, a 15-foot overhead trellis, mul-tilevel reflecting pools, 65-foot covered walkway and an amphitheatre, this is the perfect place for an outdoor class, receptions, plays and programs.

2009 Women’s Soccer

Craig Keilitz was named High Point University’s Athletic Director in January 2008 and, since then, the HPU Athletic Department has undergone un-precedented change.

With Keilitz’s guidance, High Point Athletics has undergone a complete evaluation of all aspects of the department and its various programs with goals of operational efficiency, extraordinary service and championship performance on the top of his list.

An energetic and enthusiastic leader, Keilitz’s first major project was a $2 million inside renovation of the Millis Athletic Center, which included a new playing floor, all new chair-back seats throughout the arena, a fourth video board, a new center hung scoreboard and a state-of-the-art sound and lighting system. Keilitz continues to assess HPU’s athletic facilities in order to provide the best resources for the Panthers’ student-athletes and coaches.

The Panthers have added women’s lacrosse as a varsity sport, and HPU’s first season of competition will be 2011. In his short tenure, Keilitz has made coaching staff changes in men’s basketball, baseball, women’s soccer and volleyball, and has added several new members to the administrative team.

The change in the Athletic Department is already paying dividends, as High Point University recorded its highest-ever finish – third place – in the Big South Conference Sasser Cup standings during the 2008-09 athletic season.

Keilitz joined HPU following a long stint at Wake Forest

University, where he served as an Associate Athletic Director. Keilitz began at Wake Forest in 1996 when he was hired as the Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance. After two years, Athletic Director Ron Wellman promoted Keilitz to Associate Athletic Di-rector for Internal Operations, where he supervised the NCAA compliance office, the sports medicine and equipment operations as well as strength and conditioning and event management.

In 2001, Keilitz was promoted again as Wake Forest’s Associate Athletic Director, supervising the

marketing and promotions, media relations and facilities opera-tions while also overseeing the baseball and women’s volleyball programs. Under Keilitz’s supervision, Wake Forest football set season attendance records in five of six seasons.

Keilitz started his career in college athletics at the University of Michigan in 1993 and was promoted to Director of Compli-ance in 1995.

A native of Mt. Pleasant, Mich., Keilitz earned his bachelor’s degree in communications with a minor in marketing from Central Michigan University in 1991. He was a member of the Chippewas baseball team. Keilitz received his master’s in sports administration from Ohio University in 1992.

Keilitz resides in High Point with his wife Jane, who works as a physician’s assistant at Johnson Neurological Clinic in High Point. His daughter, Lauren, is a junior at High Point University in 2009-10.

HPU is committed and compelled to the principle of institutional control in the opera-tion of its athletics department in a way that is consistent within the rules and regulations of the NCAA, Big South and HPU.

Everyone involved with High Point Ath-letics, both inside and outside the University, has a role and responsibility to operate with accountability and integrity when it comes to compliance with NCAA rules and regulations. Communication is the key when it comes to understanding how each person fits within the structure of the NCAA’s rules and regulations.

Any questions regarding NCAA rules and regulations, especially those dealing with pros-pects and student-athletes, should be directed toward Senior Associate Athletic Director for Compliance Mike Tuttle at (336) 841-4518 or [email protected]. The HPU Athletic program needs your help and support, so please cooperate to ensure success for the Panthers, on and off the field.

nCAA rules and regulations for“representatives of Athletics interests”

The High Point University Athletic Depart-ment in conjunction with the HPU Compliance Office strives for honor and dignity of fair play and the highest standards associated with inter-collegiate athletic programs. “Representatives of Athletics Interests,” which include alumni, boosters, and friends of High Point University all have a key role in maintaining our standards under the guidelines of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).

Relationships are easily formed with HPU student-athletes as fans watch and cheer them on in their competitions. Building these types of relationships is not only exciting for the fans but also important in the lives of the student-athletes.

There are many NCAA rules and regula-tions regarding the eligibility of student-athletes. Ask before you act! Make sure that anything you provide for a student-athlete is within the

NCAA’s guidelines. Speak with Senior Associate Athletic Director Mike Tuttle at (336) 841-4518 or [email protected].

Some Helpful FactsOnly coaches and athletic department staff mem-bers are permitted to be involved in recruiting...

Alumni, friends and other “representatives of athletics interests” (usually boosters) who are not employed by the University are not permit-ted to contact a prospect or members of the pros-pect’s family by letter, telephone or in-person for the purpose of soliciting their participation in the athletic program. High Point University faculty members are allowed to have contact with prospects, but only while on the campus during unofficial or official visits.A student-athlete becomes a prospect...

A student-athlete becomes a prospect when he or she begins ninth grade classes. Before the ninth grade, a student-athlete becomes a prospect if a college provides any financial aid or other benefits to the student-athlete (or their relatives or friends) that the college does not provide to all prospective students.

A student-athlete is considered a “recruited” prospect at a particular college if any coach or representative of the school’s athletics interest (booster or representative) approaches a student-athlete or any member of their family about enrolling and participating in athletics at that college. Activities by coaches or boosters that cause a student-athlete to become a recruited prospect are:

• Providing the student-athlete with an of-ficial visit

• Placing more than one telephone call to the student-athlete or any other member of their family

• Visiting the student-athlete or any other member of their family anywhere other than on the college’s campus

This information was prepared by the High Point Athletic Compliance Office and is presented to you as a guide to assist you with any questions you may have. There are many more NCAA rules and regulations that are not contained here. If you are ever unsure regarding your involvement with our prospects or current student-athletes, please contact Senior Associate Athletic Director for Compliance Mike Tuttle at (336) 841-4518 or [email protected].

plAYer develOpMenTAcademic Support

The Academic Support Program works to provide student-athletes with the resources to excel academically during their participation in intercollegiate athletics. The services offered by the Academic Support Program seek to reinforce the University’s overall mission to promote intellectual and personal growth.

Student-athletes have the same academic responsi-bilities as all other students, but they also must devote significant time and energy to athletics participation. The Department of Athletics Academic Support Program of-fers various services to assist student-athletes with these responsibilities; however all student-athletes are ulti-mately personally responsible for following a course of academic study that will lead to a degree.

HPU’s Student-Athlete Learning Assistance Cen-ter in the Steele Center gives all Panther student-athletes access to top-notch academic resources and amenities. The center is equipped with multiple desktop computer stations, wireless in-ternet capabilities, a small group work area and tutor offices. The center also serves as the location for all of HPU’s study hall ses-sions.

CHAMpS/life SkillsThe NCAA CHAMPS/Life Skills Pro-

gram is an educational program designed to enhance the welfare and promote the personal development of student-athletes. High Point University Athletics seeks to benefit the student-athletes by focusing upon their unique academic, athletic, and emotional objectives and needs.

The CHAMPS/Life Skills Program Commitment Statements are as follows:

• Commitment to Academic Excellence: To support the aca-demic progress of the student-athlete toward intellectual de-velopment and graduation.

• Commitment to Athletic Excellence: To build philosophical foundations for the development of athletic programs that are broad-based, equitable and dedicated to the well-being of the student-athlete.

• Commitment to Personal Development: To support the de-velopment of a well-balanced lifestyle for student-athletes, encouraging emotional well-being, personal growth and de-cision-making skills.

• Commitment to Career Development: To encourage the student-athlete to develop and pursue career and life goals.

• Commitment to Service: To engage the student-athlete in service to his/her campus and surrounding communities.

Competition CupA critical component of the Life Skills Program is the Com-

petition Cup, a competitive contest among the High Point Uni-versity athletic teams. Student-athletes compete on behalf of

their teams for points in various categories. The categories are based upon Life Skills commitment areas:

• Being an active role model and leader• Working as a team• Encouragement for fellow athletes• Overall academic achievement

The Competition Cup enables and encourages investment in the self (academic performance category), fellow student-athletes (athletes supporting athletics, Student-Athlete Advisory Com-mittee, Student-Athlete Mentors, and athletic performance cat-egories), and community outreach. The team that has the highest total at the end of the academic year prevails as the winner.

Student-Athlete Advisory CommitteeThe Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) is a group

made up of student-athletes assembled to provide insight on the student-athlete experience. The SAAC also offers input on the rules, regulations and polices that affect student-athletes’ lives on NCAA member institution campuses. Each of High Point’s 15 athletic teams have a representative on the HPU SAAC.

High Point University offers a compre-hensive strength & conditioning program that provides a combination of strength and speed in a safe manner that will enable HPU student-athletes to be the strongest, fastest, and most explosive collegiate athletes in the nation. The Panthers’ strength & conditioning program is led by head coach Tim Teefy, who joined HPU in 2009.

The profession of strength & conditioning is constantly changing and evolving, and Teefy stays on the cutting edge and uses the most innovative practices avail-able. Using any means necessary within the scope of strength & con-ditioning that will improve the performance of the athlete in a positive manner is what High Point University strength & conditioning is all about.

The following six areas are the focal points of High Point Univer-sity’s strength & conditioning program:

• STRENGTH: Olympic lifting techniques are one of the most wide-ly used by strength & conditioning coaches all over the country. These lifts teach the athlete advanced movements while putting the muscular skeletal system under stress and creating positive adapta-tions. This will mirror the stress the athlete undergoes during com-petition.

• POWER & EXPLOSION: Power is the ability to generate large amounts of force at a high rate of speed. Explosiveness is the ability to generate power in a short amount of time. These two principles can be applicable to every athlete regardless of sport or position.

• FLEXIBILITY: Static, dynamic and proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation are the three main components of flexibility. Using these three methods helps prevent injury, improve muscle activation, pre-vents delayed onset muscle soreness, and increases range of motion.

• SPEED & AGILITY: Speed training is used to enhance the ath-lete’s ability to get from point A to B as fast as possible. It involves teaching the athlete proper body mechanics to optimize sprinting performance. Agility is the ability to own a certain amount of space around you. An athlete must be able to react as quickly as possible in all directions for any type of situation. Spatial awareness and mus-cular coordination play major roles in agility training.

• CORE: Core training in recent years has become a major part of strength training for the athlete. “If you want to be strong on the outside, you must be strong on the inside.” The core consists of 36 muscles in and around the abdominal area and lower back region.

• NUTRITION: A training body can only perform as long as it’s get-ting an adequate supply of fuel. An athlete’s calorie intake is under high demand during a full training cycle. Athletes need adequate calories from all major food groups and minerals that will keep the athlete at optimal training performance.

High Point University strength & conditioning utilizes weight rooms in both the Steele Center and Millis Center, and HPU’s coaches and student-athletes also have access to the Panthers’ practice fields as well as Belk Track for strength & conditioning activities.

High Point University is committed to providing the best op-portunities for its student-athletes, both on and off the field, and one of the most important aspects of any quality athletic department is its athletic training program. Headed by Matt Schooler, HPU’s top-notch athletic training staff handles the day-to-day, minute-by-minute demands placed on the human body. The responsibilities of HPU’s athletic trainers are key to player development.

Schooler and each of HPU’s assistant athletic trainers are certified by the National Athletic Trainer’s Association (NATA) and licensed by the State of North Carolina. With locations in both the Millis Center and Steele Center, HPU’s athletic trainers provide compre-hensive sports medicine services for HPU’s intercollegiate athletes as well as visiting team athletes, including injury prevention, support and rehabilitation for injured athletes, as well as medical emergency management. All of HPU’s athletic trainers are qualified to react to spontaneous, on-the-field injuries, manage and treat them, and, when it is necessary, follow through on athletes’ comprehensive reha-bilitation programs under a physician’s direction.

The coaching staffs of the Panthers’ 15-sport, women’s and men’s athletics program rely heavily on the input of Schooler and his staff as they prepare lineups for games and analyze depth charts for future seasons.

MATT SCHOOlerHead Athletic Trainer

Matt Schooler is High Point University’s head athletic trainer, a post he assumed in 2009. Schooler joined the HPU athletic train-ing staff in August 2003 and has worked ex-tensively with the entire athletic program at High Point. He currently oversees coverage for the Panthers’ men’s basketball team and men’s and women’s golf teams in addition to super-vising athletic training for all 15 varsity sports at HPU.

Schooler earned his undergraduate degree in Sports Medicine from Eureka College in 2001. He was a four-year member of the Red Devils golf team. He earned his master’s degree in Secondary Educa-tion at Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Texas. A native of Georgetown, Ill., Schooler resides in High Point with his fiance, Lisa.

e BiG SOUTH COnFerenCeSince its founding in 1983, the Big South Conference

has matured into a competitive leader in college athletics, ac-tively pursuing excellence on the field of play and in the class-room. The league’s growing presence as an NCAA Division I athletic conference is evident by athletic accomplishments on the national stage, innovative marketing and media partner-ships, increased television packages, and quality athletic competition while intention-ally fostering the academic, personal, social, athletic and leadership development of each student-athlete. This has evolved into the conference’s mission of “Developing Leaders Through Athletics.”

The Big South Conference was formed on August 21, 1983, when Charleston Southern (then Baptist College) Athletic Director Howard Bagwell and Augusta President George Christenberry began recruiting members into the Big South, receiving initial commitments from Augusta, Charles-ton Southern, Campbell, Coastal Carolina and Winthrop. One month later, Dr. Edward M. Singleton was selected as the league’s first Commissioner and continued to solicit new members. His efforts led to the additions of Armstrong State, Radford and UNC Asheville, giving the Big South more than the required six members to constitute an official conference. The Big South’s first year of competition was in the fall of 1984, and in September 1986, the Big South Conference was granted full-fledged NCAA Division I status.

During its infancy and prior to securing automatic bids to NCAA Championships, the Big South made early strides in earning at-large berths in several national postseason events, including volleyball, women’s basketball and women’s golf. In 1989, George F. “Buddy” Sasser replaced the retir-ing Dr. Singleton as Commissioner, and in 1990, the league received its first automatic bid – receiving an automatic quali-fier to the NCAA Baseball Championship. Under Sasser’s seven years of leadership, the conference implemented its public relations and compliance programs, and introduced its first-ever men’s basketball television package, featuring the Big South competing among some of the finest teams in the nation.

In August 1996, Kyle B. Kallander replaced Sasser as the league’s third Commissioner, and in his 13 years at the helm of the Big South, Kallander has been instrumental in aggressively promoting the confer-ence to new levels. The conference has enjoyed record levels in marketing revenue during the past several years, he has brought television coverage to Big South women’s basketball, baseball and softball for the first time in conference history, as well as increased national television exposure to the league as a whole through aggressive and unique television packages.

Under Kallander’s leadership, the Big South developed and initiated its first long-range strategic plan, re-affirming the league’s vision as a distinc-tive athletic conference committed to the quality of institutional life through

athletic competition. He also spearheaded the efforts to add football as a championship sport, which came to fruition in 2002. Conference membership has been solidified with the additions of High Point, Gardner-Webb and Presbyterian, and in 2011-12, the return of charter member Campbell Uni-

versity. Kallander’s long range vision has also included tech-nological advancements, as the conference introduced its first live event video stream-ing in 2005 and has since expanded its video offerings to more than 600 events an-nually through a partnership

with the member institutions, as well as the creation of several online and social media platforms.

In the last 15 years alone, the Big South Conference has experienced monumental growth and success in nearly every sport. During this time, the conference has had two individual national champions, more than 200 All-Ameri-cans, has reached the “Sweet 16” in men’s soccer, women’s basketball and baseball, has received national top-25 rank-ings in men’s soccer, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, baseball, men’s outdoor track & field and men’s golf, had an individual selected to play in the NCAA Singles Champion-ship four times in addition to the first men’s tennis doubles at-large selection, had the No. 1 ranked men’s golfer in the country, has had the nation’s top scoring men’s basketball team three consecutive years as well as the national men’s basketball scoring leader twice, received an at-large playoff berth in the Football Championship Subdivision in 2006, and had an institution finish fifth in the NCAA Men’s Golf Championships – the conference’s highest-ever team finish in an NCAA event.

In 2006-07 alone, the Big South was the only conference nationwide to have an at-large participant in the football playoffs (Coastal Carolina), a team in the Second Round of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament (Winthrop) and a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Baseball Regionals (Coastal Carolina). In fact, Coastal Carolina’s baseball program has been a No. 1 seed three out of the last five years, while its FCS playoff berth in 2006 came in just the fifth-year of the Big South’s football existence.

The conference’s tagline, “Developing Leaders Through Athletics” was unveiled in 2008-09 in conjunction with the conference’s 25th Anniversary. The league also honored its

heritage with the Top 25 “Best of the Best” moments in league history from 1983-2008, with Liberty University’s 10-year women’s basketball champi-onship run from 1996-2007 being crowned the No. 1 moment in the Big South’s first 25 years.

The conference’s on-field accom-plishments have been duplicated in the classroom. Annually, more than 40 percent of conference student-athletes are named to the Big South’s Presi-dential Honor Roll for maintaining a cumulative 3.0 grade-point average, and the league has had more than 95 Academic All-Americans in its quarter-century of existence.www.BigSouthSports.com
