The Gift of ElulThis month we will begin to say goodbye to summer, start to put

away our beach and pool towels and prepare for another school year and Jewish year as the calendar will soon change. The Hebrew month just prior to the Jewish New Year is called Elul. The sages of our tradition gave us the gift of Elul as a time for sacred preparation for Rosh Hashanah for reflection and renewal.The name of the month (spelled Alef-Lamed-Vav-Lamed) is said to be an acronym of “Ani l’dodi v’dodi li,” “I am my Beloved’s and my Beloved is mine,” a quote from Song of Songs 6:3, where the Beloved is God and the “I” is the Jewish people. In Aramaic, the word “Elul” means “search,” which is

appropriate, because this is a time of year when we search our hearts.

Elul is a period of cheshbon hanefesh – soul accounting. We are to take stock of our innermost thoughts, desires, motivators, longings and compare them to our reality. We are to check in on the way we treat others, what we are doing to improve our world and ourselves. We are to connect deeply with the person we have always imagined we would be and consider the ways in which we’ve fallen short during the past year. We seek out people we’ve harmed to ask forgiveness. We make plans for how we will try to live differently and better in the upcoming New Year. We begin the process of setting our intentions for the New Year, a process that will culminate on Yom Kippur

Some traditional practices during Elul include hearing the shofar each day from the first day of Elul (August 12th this year) until Rosh Hashanah. Psalm 27 is recited as a special psalm for the month which teaches us the message of the entire Holiday season: that as Jews we are to hope in God; and then we are to do everything we can to strengthen ourselves as if we were wholly left to our own fates, and then after, to continue to have hope still. This is familiar to us from our prayer book – “Pray as if everything depends on God, and act as if everything depends on us.” Elul sanctions time for the belief that we have the ability to turn the tide for the year to come through our active work towards repair and building of our world. During Elul, we are to allow the good of our inner nature to win out over the impulses that distract from being our best selves. The shofar that is traditionally sounded every day of Elul serves as that wake up call.

Some more modern ways to participate in Elul as a time of study and self-reflection, growth and discovery that will help you begin shaping the year ahead, can also be easy engaging and fun. Many of these websites provide creative opportunities and educational resources that will help make our Elul experiences truly meaningful.

Expanding Our Preschool to Meet a Community Need & Grow Jewish Education

Our Temple is a thriving, growing congregation. So much so, that our Board of Trustees has taken a positive step to meet those current needs, while also fulfilling one of the pillars of our recent Endowment Campaign, growing Jewish education opportunities.

On May 15, 2018, the Temple Board of Trustees (BOT) approved the expansion of the Temple Preschool’s infant care program, adding two infant care rooms to meet The Temple’s immediate need

for infant care by our growing young congregant demographic. This was my first board meeting as your President, and I was quite pleased to have this first initiative in my presidential platform approved.

Why Expand our Preschool? Demand Greater than the Supply. There were many sound reasons why the decision led to expanding our Preschool. The Temple

Preschool is highly sought after in the preschool community. Our infant class continues to have 20-plus children on the waiting list. It is also becoming more and more difficult to serve the increasing number of Temple members and siblings applying for enrollment. Gentrification in Nashville is forcing other infant care programs to close.

Fosters Relationships. Enlarging our Preschool facilities further helps the relationship between The Temple and our Temple Preschool. When young families tour The Temple for membership, having a Temple Preschool is an attraction. And sometimes the young families who join The Temple are members of the Preschool first.

Encourages Member Engagement. Our Temple’s Preschool also encourages member engagement. Temple members who are parents, grandparents, and special friends of Preschool students attend Preschool’s Tot Shabbat weekly as well as Preschool special events, such as Grandparent Shabbat, Passover Model Seder, and Thanksgiving pot-luck, to name a few.

Serves the Greater Community. Lastly, because the Temple Preschool is a premier preschool program in Nashville, we have many non-Jewish preschool families who are learning about Judaism during their time there. By expanding our program, we are broadening the opportunity for The Temple to leave a positive impression to the greater Nashville community. Details about the Preschool Expansion

The expansion is extremely cost effective, utilizing existing classroom space that requires minimal upgrades to meet various code requirements. Two classrooms will be renovated with only one room used initially, and the second room renovated in preparation for future expansion. Fred Yazdian Construction Company was approved to handle the construction. The initial one-room addition will accommodate eight more infants under the Temple’s care. This new expansion will help meet all of our Preschool’s priority registration needs. Cost analysis performed justified expansion with a five-year rate of return on investment through increased profits from the increase in student enrollments.

The first day of Preschool is August 6, 2018. The dedication of the new infant care rooms will be August 26, 2018.Special Notes of Thanks

A special note of thanks goes to Preschool Director Corye Nelson for having the vision, foresight, and perseverance to make this expansion a reality. She has been brainstorming with the Preschool Advisory Committee on ways to meet the needs of our community since she began her career as our director in 2010.

Anke was born in Nashville on September 9, 2005. She is the daughter of Jena Schmid and Greg Stein, and the granddaughter of Paul and Joan Schmid of Two Rivers, Wisconsin and Rob and Carol Stein of Nashville.

Over the last year, Anke has worked in a volunteer capacity for Love at First Sight, Murphy Road Animal Clinic, Meals on Wheels, and Nashville Food Project.

Anke is in the 8th grade at Martin Luther King Junior Magnet School. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with family and friends, being silly, having a good laugh, traveling, enjoying good food, and playing drums.

For her mitzvah project, Evan has been working with rescue animals.

Evan is in the 8th grade at West Wilson Middle School and her special interests include computers, music, dancing, and crafts,.

Eliana was born on August 22, 2005 in Nashville. Her parents are Lee and Joan Gorden. Eliana is the granddaughter of Phillip and Vivian Gorden of Bethesda, Maryland and Catherine DeWitt of Tucson, Arizona.

For her mitzvah project, Eliana has been working with Second Harvest Food Bank as well as the Nashville International Center for Empowerment, and Conexión Américas. By helping with some of the most fundamental needs of these populations at risk including nutrition and education, Eliana hopes to help new families establish themselves safely and comfortably inthe Nashville community.

Eliana is in the 7th grade at Linden Waldorf School. She enjoys most all outdoor activities in nature and she is also an avid reader, viola player, and actor in local theater productions.

Jackson SchneiderAugust 25, 2018

Jackson Schneider was born in Boca Raton, FL on June 18, 2005. His parents are Rachel and Jordan Schneider and his grandparents are Judi and Steven Schneider of Boca Raton, Florida, Karen Salvage of Hollywood, Florida; and the late Stuart Salvage.

For his mitzvah project, Jackson volunteered this past winter at the LP PENCIL Box during teacher shopping nights. The LP PENCIL Box collects donated supplies and distributes items throughout Metro Nashville Public Schools, as well as allowing MNPS teachers to shop for free supplies once a semester. Jackson will continue to collect donated supplies throughout the 2018-19 school year.

Jackson is in the 7th grade at University School of Nashville. He enjoys playing ice hockey, golf, watching his Chicago sports teams, and spending time with his family and friends. Jackson’s summers are spent at his second home, Camp Timberlane for Boys in Woodruff, WI.

For his mitzvah project, Connor has been interested in helping at the local humane society and rescue shelters to care for animals in need of a loving family.

Connor is in the 8th grade at Montgomery Bell Academy. In his free time, Connor enjoys playing basketball, lacrosse, snow skiing, water skiing, and hanging out with his friends.

Amalia Serkin was born on October 27, 2005 in Brooklyn, New York. She is the daughter of Kimberly Greenberg and Christopher Serkin. Amalia’s grandparents are Joyce & Mel Greenberg of Worchester, Massachusetts, John Serkin of Santa Fe, New Mexico; and Lucy Gratwick of Marlboro, Vermont.

For her mitzvah project, Amalia is working to provide food and supplies to homeless shelters in Vermont (where she spends the summer) and Nashville.

Amalia is in the 7th grade at University School of Nashville and in her free time she enjoys rock climbing, playing piano and euphonium, making art, and horseback riding.

in Atlanta, Georgia. Her parents are Janelle and Erik Kraemer. Lilly’s grandparents are Hazel Kraemer of Columbia, South Carolina, Dr. Elihu Kraemer of Orlando, Florida, and Dr. and Mrs. Howard S. Yager of Atlanta, Georgia.

For her mitzvah project, Lilly Faye has selected Holocaust Awareness and the Belle Meade Plantation, and plans to do education programs in coordination with Sharon Paz at local middle schools.

Lilly Faye is in the 7th grade at St. Bernard Academy. She plays the piano and viola, and enjoys reading, traveling, riding her bike, going to sleep away camp in Maine, gardening, making flower arrangements, basketball, cross country, tennis, and horseback riding.

Rosh Hashanah Receptionwill be hosted by The Temple Officers & Clergy at The Temple

following the Morning Service onMonday, September 10th

New members and long-time members alike are cordially invited to celebrate the New Year at this annual Rosh Hashanah gathering.

1. Parents must be attending services in The Temple building. 2. Babysitting is by reservation only, space is limited. (The deadline for Erev Rosh Hashanah & Rosh Hashanah Morning Service is September 5th & the deadline for Kol Nidre & Yom Kippur Morning Service is September 12th). No exceptions!

3. Children arriving without a reservation will not be able to remain in the babysitting area.

4. Please pack a snack or other items your child may need during the babysitting times.

Reservations may be made by mailing in your check or by emailing [email protected].

We will need to know the ages of your children and the services you will be attending.

High Holy Day Babysitting

The Temple will offer High Holy Days babysitting ONLY for the following services: Erev Rosh Hashanah, Rosh Hashanah Morning, Kol Nidre & Yom Kippur Morning

for the children of Temple members up to age 5 for a nominal fee of $10.00 per child, per service. Our goal is to provide the kind of care you expect for your children. To do so, we need your cooperation.

The size of our membership and the increased demand for this service, as well as our desire to provide well-organized, safe care for the children, require that the following procedures be followed:

Break the Fast (Reservations are required, please rsvp.)

Mark your calendars now & plan to Break the Fast with your Temple community on Wednesday, September 19th immediately following Concluding Services. This has become a Temple tradition and is enjoyed by all who participate.

The cost is $15.00 for adults and $5.00 for children under 12. Your check is your reservation (received by Friday, September 14th) and should be mailed to: 5015 Harding Pike, Nashville, TN 37205

High Holy DaysattentIon! attentIon! attentIon! attentIon!

Some people find the temperature in the sanctuary can fluctuate during services. We recommend you bring a wrap or other garment to ensure you’re comfortable throughout services.

Parking and Security for the High Holy DaysEach year, congregants for High Holy Day services are greeted at The Temple by uniformed officers and professional parking attendants. Security this year will be provided through a combined effort of public and private personnel who are familiar with our Temple buildings and grounds. The usual procedures will be in place for security, traffic control and member safety. Please note the following very important items:

1. Leave for services earLier than usual in order to arrive in advance of service time. There are two entrances to The Temple. Drop-off is available only at the glassed-in-foyer entrance for those who need it.

2. Limited overflow parking will be available on the Belle Meade Plantation property and satellite parking will be available at the GJCC.

3. If you park at the Plantation, we ask that you enter by way of The Temple parking lot but exit only from the Belle Meade Plantation exit on Leake Avenue following services.

4. The Temple driveway will be one way during our largest services. Please follow the posted signs that will direct you around the building. The traffic controllers will direct you as to where and how to park and exit. Please do not try to back into parking spaces, this causes traffic to back up. Your patience will be greatly appreciated!

5. Additional disabled & elderly parking will be available close to the building. Look for signs.

6. Please remember no parking is allowed on Bellevue Drive W. and Bellevue Drive S. Over the past few years the Belle Meade Police Department has towed cars. BE WARNED, we cannot interrupt services to announce imminent towing.

A Reminder About SeatingSanctuary, chapel, and auditorium seating will be in place to accommodate over 1,200 members and guests to each of the services for the High Holy Days. As in the past, there are no tickets required for entry into the services, nor is there reserved seating.

We ask your cooperation through the direction of the ushers and staff in helping to maintain the dignity and decorum of our services. Please help them by adhering to a few simple but very important ruLes:

1. You maY not save seats In the sanctuarY except for the driver while he/she is parking. If you wish to sit together, you may gather in the foyer and enter together or you may save a few seats in the chapel or auditorium.

2. please do not leave emptY spaces between You and the person next to You. It is critical that we fill all available seating so that everyone who wants to attend can be accommodated.

3. a special seating section will be available for the convenience of persons with physical disabilities.

4. no one maY enter the sanctuarY, chapel or audItorIum when the congregatIon Is standIng. The staff knows when to seat latecomers. Entry will be through the auditorium and chapel doors only, so as not to disturb services in progress.

5. please be consIderate of others whIle waItIng In the foYer prIor to the start of the next servIce. If you arrive early, we ask that you wait quietly. The noise from those waiting can easily be heard in the sanctuary. The speakers in the foyer area will enable you to listen to services in progress.

6. So that everyone is assured of having a praYerbook, kindly return yours to the ushers and staff in the lobby at the end of the service. If you own a copy of the Gates of Repentance prayerbook, we encourage you to bring it.

High Holy Day Youth ProgramsThe Temple’s Youth Programs are held simultaneously with our Rosh Hashanah Morning Service,

10:30 am-12:30 pm and Yom Kippur Morning Service, 10:30 am-12:30 pm. These programs are open to all Temple youth, K-3rd grade. For safety and security purposes, registration is required. Space is limited. Drop off begins 30 minutes before the service and pick up is at the conclusion of the service.

Jews share a sacred duty to accept responsibility for the vulnerable people in our midst. Hunger exists in America and it exists right here in our own backyard. 1 in 4 children in the state of Tennessee is food insecure and in Middle Tennessee alone. 31 percent of the people Second Harvest serves are children. The Temple Social Action Committee is proud to sponsor our Yom Kippur Food Drive every year!

There are 2 ways to donate to our drive: 1) Bring non-perishable food items in a bag or box on Yom Kippur. *No glass. No expired or damaged items. 2) Write a check to Second Harvest Food Bank and mail or bring it to The Temple. Food should be brought to The Temple on Yom Kippur. Please put your donations on your car trunk or beside your car and we’ll pick them up.

The preschool is excited to be gearing up for a new school year. As we continue to strive to provide the best learning environment for our youngest citizens, our preschool is excited to announce the following new initiatives for the 2018-2019 school year. The Addition of a Classroom: As mentioned in the President’s Message, we are adding a new Infant classroom to our preschool. It is beautiful and allows us to better meet the needs of The Temple members and currently enrolled families who need infant care.

A Collaborative Approach: Our 3, 4 and 5 year-olds are going to be part of a new classroom approach. The Simcha & Shalom classrooms will be working together to expand the children’s learning opportunities by collaborating together throughout the day. The Pre-K classroom will provide three different learning environments from which the children can choose. There will be an outdoor classroom, a traditional classroom, and a learning lab. In each of these collaborative relationships, children will gather together for a morning meeting for music and discussion and then the children will choose in which learning environment they want to spend the remainder of the day. Through this approach, we send children the message that we respect them as individuals with unique interests and learning styles and we offer increased opportunities for small group work.

The Addition of an Atelier: Our studio spaces are continuing to improve each year. This year we are taking a giant leap in our focus of the educational opportunities that art exploration provides. As our studios become more of an intentional learning space we move from a traditional studio to an Atelier. “Since the late ‘60s in the municipal preschools of Reggio Emilia, each school has a space called the atelier and the figure of the atelierista, a “teacher” with an arts background. In this way, the expressive and poetic languages became part of the process by which knowledge is built. The Atelier thus becomes the place of research, invention, and empathy, expressed by means of “100 languages,” which extend beyond childhood to include adulthood up to advanced age.” [reggiochildren.it] We are thrilled to have our first Atelierista on staff for the 2018-2019 school year. Make sure to visit The Temple’s art gallery (in meeting rooms A & B) throughout the year to see displays and documentation of our children’s work in the Atelier.
