HIGH ENERGY RECIPES

INTRODUCTION

This information leaflet offers recipes to boost your calorie intake using food and nutritional drinks. Food should always be used as the first line of treatment for patients at risk for malnutrition. Enriching your diet can help you to avoid losing weight or regain any weight that you may have lost

NUTRITIONAL DRINKS

These drinks (non-prescription) can be bought in chemists and some supermarkets. They come in powdered form and should be made up as directed on the packet. Examples include:

Build Up: vanilla, banana, strawberry, chocolate or natural

Build Up Soup: chicken, potato & leek, tomato and vegetable

Complan: original, strawberry, vanilla, chocolate, banana and with oats

Complan soup: chicken, vegetable

HIGH ENERGY DRINKS

Enriched milk 540kcal; 40g protein

2-4 tablespoons semi skimmed milk powder

1 pint (600ml) full cream (blue cap) milk

Mix together. Replace the use of ordinary milk/water to make up coffee, packet soups, sauces, jelly, milk pudding, porridge and other breakfast cereals.

Enriched milkshake (serves 1) 255kcal; 14g protein

1/3 pint (200ml) enriched milk

2-3 tsp milkshake powder/syrup

Mix ingredients together. Serve chilled. Cream or ice cream is optional.

Yoghurt drink (serves 1) 306kcal; 17g protein

1/3 pint (200ml) enriched milk

1 tbsp clear sugar/honey

1 pot (125g) sweetened full fat fruit yoghurt

Mix all ingredients together. Chill before serving

Apricot lemon crush (serves 1) 303kcal; 9g protein

1 can (425 g) apricot halves in natural fruit juice 1 cup (250ml) natural yoghurt juice of 1 lemon 1 tablespoon sugar/honey 2 tablespoons wheatgerm (optional) crushed ice

Blend all ingredients together.

Banana cream (serves 1) 485kcal; 17g protein

1/3 pint (200ml) enriched milk

1 small ripe banana

1 scoop ice cream

1 tsp sugar/honey

Peel and mash the banana. Blend with all the other ingredients. Serve chilled.

Fruit mix (serves 1) 449kcal; 6g protein

1 cup (250ml) orange juice (or other fruit juice combination) 1 banana 1 scoop ice cream and/or cream 1 dessertspoon sugar/honey crushed ice

Blend all ingredients together.

Fruit shake (serves 1) 396kcal; 10g protein

1/2 cup (125ml) full cream milk 1 tablespoon cream 1 scoop ice cream small serving stewed or fresh fruit 1 tablespoon semi skimmed milk powder 1 dessertspoon sugar/honey crushed ice

Blend all ingredients together.

Honey malt (serves 1) 437kcal; 16g protein

1/3 pint (200ml) enriched milk

1 tbsp clear honey

1 scoop ice cream

1 heaped tsp malted drink powder (e.g. Horlicks)

Mix all the ingredients together. Serve chilled.

Cinnamon Spice (serves 1) 227kcal; 13g protein

1/3 pint (200ml) enriched milk

1 tbsp golden syrup

Pinch mixed spice

Pinch cinnamon

Heat the milk. Stir in all the other ingredients. Serve hot.

Chocolate mallow (serves 1) 296kcal; 14g protein

1/3 pint (200ml) enriched milk

1 tbsp drinking chocolate

2 tsp sugar/honey

4 marshmallows

1 tbsp (15ml) rum (if permitted by GP)

Blend together the drinking chocolate and sugar/honey with a little milk. Heat the remaining milk with 2 marshmallows. Add to chocolate with rum, if using. Place the remaining marshmallows on top.

Coffee mocha (serves 1) 280kcal; 10g protein

1 sachet (57g) chocolate Complan

1/3 pint (200ml) boiling water

Full cream milk to taste

1-2 tsp coffee granules

Mix the sachet of Complan with the water. Add 1-2 tsp instant coffee and mix well. Sweeten to taste and top up with milk.

Maxi nightcap (serves 1) 293kcal; 12g protein

1/3 pint (200ml) full cream milk

1 tbsp natural Complan/Build Up

1 tbsp sugar/honey

2 tbsp Ovaltine/Horlicks or drinking chocolate

Mix Complan/Build Up with sugar/honey and a little cold milk. Add flavouring and remaining hot milk. Top with a marshmallow float or chocolate flake and cream

BREAKFAST

Complan & Oats (serves 1) 323kcal; 13g protein

1 sachet (57g) Complan & Oats

4fl oz (125ml) full cream milk

Empty the sachet of Complan & Oats into a bowl. Heat the milk and stir in. Add sugar/honey to sweeten if desired.

High energy cereal 361kcal; 23g protein

3 tablespoons instant breakfast cereal or 1 crushed Weetabix

½ cup (125ml) full cream milk

3 tablespoons natural Complan/Build Up

Mix Complan/Build Up with cereal. Add hot milk and stir well. Add sugar/honey or salt to taste.

Super shake (serves 4) 311kcal; 16g protein for 1 serving

2 large ripe bananas

14fl oz (400ml) cold full cream milk

8 tbsp Build Up/Complan original

2 x 125g thick and creamy yoghurts e.g. strawberry, blackcurrant

2 tbsp sugar/honey

Peel the bananas and blend in a food processor until smooth. Add remaining ingredients and continue to blend until smooth. Serve chilled.

Fruity oatmeal breakfast bowl (serves 4) 381kcal; 17g protein for 1 serving

4 sachets (152g) Build Up/Complan instant drink, strawberry flavour

1 ¼ pint (700ml) full cream milk

4oz (100g) quick-cook oats

2oz (50g) ready-to-eat dried apricots, chopped

2 large bananas, chopped

2 tbsp sugar/honey

4 tbsp thick and creamy yoghurt

Blend the Build Up instant drink with the milk and transfer to a large pan. Stir in the oats and bring to a boil. Cook for 1 minute on a medium setting, stirring continuously, and then add the apricots. Remove from the heat, add the bananas and sugar/honey and mix well. Serve topped with a spoon of yoghurt.

DESSERTS

Milk jelly (serves 2-4) 493kcal; 27g protein for 2 servings

Preparation time: 10min

Chilling time: 30min

1 packet (10g) flavoured jelly

1 sachet (38g) Build Up instant drink

16fl oz (450ml) full cream milk

Dissolve the jelly in 150ml (¼ pt) boiling water and leave to cool completely, but not set. Make up the Build Up instant drink according to pack instructions and add to the cooled jelly. Top up to 600ml (1 pt) with milk and whisk together. Pour into serving dishes and leave to set.

Black forest delight (serves 1) 186kcal; 11g protein

1 sachet (57g) chocolate Complan

3 ½ fl oz (100ml) water

1 pot (125g) black cherry yoghurt

Mix the sachet of Complan with the water. Add the yoghurt and mix well.

Berry ice drink (serves 2) 414kcal; 30g protein for 2 servings

1 sachet (38g) Build Up instant drink, strawberry flavour

1/3 pint (200ml) full cream milk

1 tin (290g) summer fruits in light syrup

2 tbsp natural yoghurt

Blend the Build Up instant drink and remaining ingredients in a food processor until smooth. Pour into a tall glass and serve immediately.

Strawberries & cream (serves1) 141kcal; 7g protein

1 sachet (57g) strawberry Complan

3 ½ fl oz (100ml) water

3 tbsp (45ml) cream

Mix the sachet of Complan with the water. Add single cream and stir.
