Hifn Applied Services Processors

Hifn Applied Services Processors (ASP’s) are purpose-built

integrated circuits that handle all of the heavy-lifting required

to power networking and storage systems optimization and

protection in the age of connected, always-on applications.

Hifn ASPs serve as performance-critical ingredients in

networking and storage appliances providing the processor

heavy-lifting required across the full spectrum of network

services from converged services processing to security ser-

vices processing to data protection/reduction/de-duplication

services processing.

By providing these performance-critical capabilities, Hifn

ASPs enable networking and storage OEMs to offload general

purpose CPUs of complex infrastructure processing and stan-

dards, and power networked applications at optimal levels of

performance and protection.

In addition Hifn ASPs are integrated into Hifn’s Express Family

of data reduction and data security cards, the Hifn Swarm

Family of Secure Storage Systems, and the Hifn Sypher

Family of Tape Encryption Appliances.

The ASP Advantage

Hifn’s heavy-lifting approach to intelligent networking and

storage optimization and protection is markedly differentiated

from that of general purpose intelligent networking CPU

providers, and delivers superior scalability, price/performance

and power-saving “green IT” benefits as follows:

•Low Power, Green IT-ready: Hifn ASPs deliver the greenest packet processing, security and storage services available with a low power and data reduction/compression approach that is a generation ahead of the competition.

•Scalability: Hifn ASP’s deliver true plug and play, non-disruptive, scale-as-you-go capability, as distinct from the “rip and replace” approach provided by general purpose CPU providers, an approach that forces OEMs to re-design-in a new part in order to scale.

•Price/Performance: Hifn ASPs dramatically outperform general purpose intelligent networking CPUs, and are priced for market sweet spot adoption in both enterprise-class and SME implementations.

8170 Secure VoIP Processor

The 8170 Secure VoIP Processor is Hifn’s highest

performance VoIP security product. The 8170 supports

approximately 5,000 – 10,000 secure full duplex calls. With

multi-gigabit throughput the 8170 is suitable for high capacity

Session Border Controller (SBCs), Media Gateways and

Class 5 Packet switches.

The 8170 interfaces to the host via a high speed

64-bit/133MHz PCI-X bus or through a POS-PHY level 3 com-

patible streaming bus interface (2x 32-bit, 104MHz).

The 8170 is offered in a 576-PBGA package and is available

either leaded or RoHS compliant. Typical power consumption

is 4W.

7870 Secure VoIP Processor

The 7870 Secure VoIP Processor supports approximately

1,250 – 5,000 secure full duplex calls. The 7870 is ideally

suited to mid-scale SBCs, Media Gateways, Media Servers or

packet switches.

The 7870 interfaces to the host via a 64-bit/66 MHz PCI

bus. It is offered in either 480 or 625 PBGA packages and

is available either leaded or RoHS compliant. Typical power

consumption is 2.0W.

LZS—the industry standard—available from Hifn

The 9620/9630 implement the industry standard Hifn LZS

data compression algorithm. This algorithm has been stan-

dardized by many organizations including:

•IETF (RFC 3173, RFC-1974, RFC-1962, RFC-1967)

•Frame Relay Forum (FRF.9)

•ANSI (X3.241), and

•QIC (122)

In addition, LZS has become the de facto standard in tape

drives. Companies rely on LZS to ensure the most efficient,

highest performing compression technologies for their

devices.

CPU intervention is not required between operations, elimi-

nating any latency issues. Record can be queued, reducing

CPU intervention.

The 9620/9630 contain input and output FIFOs, separate

compression and decompression engines, dedicated internal

compression memory, and command, status, and result

registers. The 9620 has a fault detection feature that verifies

the results of the compression engine in real time.

Features of 9620•Compress or decompress at 160 Mbytes/s

•Industry-standard LZS algorithm

•Verification logic increases reliability

•On-chip memory eliminates the need for external compres-sion RAM

•Processes multiple data records per command

•High-speed, single-cycle burst interface

Features of 9630•Compress or decompress at 300 Mbytes/s

•Industry-standard LZS algorithm

•“Enhanced LZS” algorithm, with anti-expansion compression

•Compression operation verification by decompression engine

•Source synchronous system bus interface

•On-chip memory eliminates the need for external compres-sion RAM

•Processes multiple data records per command

•High-speed, single-cycle burst interface
