MADE IN AMERICA

CRAFTMASTER“At Craftmaster, we continue to celebrate our ‘Made in America’ commitment by bringing our customers a product we’re proud of, one that will last for years to come. Made in one of our three facilities in Taylorsville, NC, every piece is crafted by folks with years of experience that know about hard work and going the extra mile. We build a product that is second to none in our price range. The caliber of the workmanship and the quality controls we have put in place make Craftmaster upholstery one of the best values in the industry.

Today, more than ever, the ‘Made in America’ label means a lot to us and to our valued customers. Our core business at Craftmaster is affordable, high-quality, custom order upholstery. With over 150 living room styles, 100 accent pieces, and 800 fabrics from which to choose, the possibilities are endless. We offer styles in casual, traditional, transitional, and cottage looks, and we take comfort very seriously. Hundreds of hours go into the product development process to create a new piece with comfort and finesse.

Our rich history of building quality furniture began in 1972 and in 2015, we celebrated our 43rd anniversary. In this region of the United States furniture is more than a business, it is a family tradition. Many in the Craftmaster family have been with the company for over 25 years, some from the very beginning. So we would be honored for you to take a look at Craftmaster when you begin your search for the perfect upholstery piece. We know you’ll be glad you put your trust in us.”

~ Henry Hayes, Regional Sales

I think it is important to note that we intend to continue our legacy of crafting our upholstery in America, and we feel that our customers should be proud to buy Vanguard Furniture upholstery, not simply because it is Made in North Carolina, but because it is the best furniture we know how to make. HICKORY FURNITURE MART:

The Mull family opens Hickory Drive-In Grill, which includes a hot dog stand for patrons on the east side of the site of what is now known as Hickory Furniture Mart.

1947 1952

The hot dog stand becomes so popular with movie goers that this sparks the idea of converting it into a full scale restaurant and Mull’s Restaurant opens.

1962-1980

The Markets at Hickory Furniture Mart continue to gain popularity and grow in attendance. Multiple expansions take place to display more product by more manufacturers.

1960

Leroy Lail encourages a group of furniture manufacturers to meet twice a year to display their products to furniture buyers inside the building and Hickory Furniture Mart originates from the creative vision of Leroy Lail and Lynn (Mull) Lail.

1996-1998

Hickory Furniture Mart completes two major expansions on the south side of the building to add more showroom space.

1992

The Mull family decides to close Mull’s Motel & Restaurant and the Hickory Drive-In Grill and utilize this land to expand Hickory Furniture Mart even more. The Lail family completes another major expansion on the southeast side of the building and Mull’s Motel becomes a Holiday Inn Express.

13800-462-MART hickoryfurniture.com

A HISTORY OF TRANSITION

2009

The North entrance is transformed through a lobby renovation project.

1985

The Lail family decides to convert their bi-annual wholesale furniture exhibition space into a year-round retail furniture destination. Visitors from around the world now have access to the most diverse furniture selections under one roof and receive exclusive industry discounts comparable to wholesale pricing that have never been offered to the public before.

2014

The Lail family redevelops the original Mull’s Motel site into a new mixed-use retail development known as Fairbrook Ridge. The land continues to expand with future growth from a space that started out and evolved from a simple hot dog stand inside of a drive-in movie theater.

1957

Due to its prime location and the need for overnight accommodations in the area, the Mull family decides to add a motel on-site. Mull’s Restaurant now becomes Mull’s Motel & Restaurant.

1958

Mull’s Restaurant becomes a destination for furniture wholesale dealers and buyers traveling through Hickory on business. Since many of the furniture buyers stay at the motel, local furniture manufacturers establish this as a central meeting point to showcase their current product lines to potential buyers. They use the restaurant’s basement to display more product, leading to the industry’s first wholesale exhibition, which takes place in the basement of Mull’s Restaurant.

When you make the trip to Hickory, you are not only entering into furniture country, you are also getting ready to experience southern hospitality at its finest. And when you set up a design appointment with Sally Bentley, owner of Designing Women, you are in for a treat like none other. Sally has been in the business for over 30 years and, in her career, has designed more than 2,500 homes all around the world ~ from Hickory to Dubai and everything in between. Customers who call her office, immediately get a taste of Sally’s southern charm that so many visitors find comforting and endearing and travel all the way to North Carolina to experience. Sally’s approach to design is different than many others in the industry. From the minute she speaks with you on the phone or visits with you in her office, she takes you under her wing and protects and

nurtures you. She is part designer, part mother, part friend, part confident and she is always willing to share her knowledge and expertise in design with anyone willing to spend the time with her.

Designing Women is a full service interior design firm that consists of three designers, Sally Bentley, Donna Chamberlain and Kirsten Hart. All are seasoned designers who are committed to providing clients with the most beautiful and functional home they could ever dream of within the constraints of the budget they have allotted. “Nobody likes to talk about it,” says Sally, “but it’s all we ever talk about. We have the conversation right up front and decide what the budget comfort level is so we don’t waste time looking at things that aren’t appropriately priced. We never need to have embarrassing moments inside our showrooms when pricing comes up for discussion because it’s already been decided on at the very beginning.”

“We spend a lot of time not only listening to our clients, but actually hearing what they are saying to us. Our first concern is always knowing the lifestyle of each client who is going to be living in the home we’re helping them create. We can make it beautiful, but if it doesn’t function for them, then there is no need to have it. We ask them if they are layers, sitters, or entertainers. Do they have children, grandchildren or pets? All of these things matter, and this is where the listening part of our job comes in. We will bring our seamstress in to talk to our clients personally. Others prefer to have us just handle everything for them.”

Designing Women works with their clients on a very personal level, and by spending many hours together it is almost inevitable that they become intertwined into their client’s daily lifestyles.

They will work with a client from the time they arrive until the end of the work day. Once the showrooms close, they will work on coordinating shipping with the carrier and help manage all the paperwork and final payments with each showroom. Many times there is so much done within the course of one day that it is sometimes confusing to the customer what they purchased where. This is especially true in such a large building with so many options. That is where Designing Women steps in and takes over to alleviate any stress or anxiety that may arise as a result of this. Sally says, “We spend early mornings and late evenings working with clients that have time constraints so that we are able

to maximize their time while they are in Hickory, Whether they are here for business, visiting family and friends or have dedicated their entire time solely to furnishing their home with us, we work to maximize their visit.”

“We always try to be accommodating to the needs of our clients. Sometimes a spouse needs to rest during the day, or a client needs to be transported back and forth from the airport, or they would like us to make reservations at a local restaurant for dinner. Since we are the only people they know in town, we become the people they trust to make the right decisions for them. We’ve even driven a client to the hospital during an onset of appendicitis!”

So the next time you are looking to connect with a designer on a more intimate level, do not hesitate to pick up the phone and call Sally, Donna or Kirsten. They are here to share a fun, yet productive day with you that results in a home that you have thoroughly enjoyed working on and will continue to enjoy for many years to come. Designing Women is located on Level 3 at the East entrance. Appointments are recommended in advance to ensure availability during your timeframe needed; however walk-ins are always welcome. They also offer their design services as a unique gift for weddings, birthdays, anniversaries, holidays, corporate events or special occasions. HFM

After years of living in larger, more spacious homes, empty nest Baby Boomers have started downsizing, scaling back and looking for furniture that is multi-functional but also space-saving in their apartments, condos, townhomes and smaller living spaces. And today’s Gen-Xers and Millennials are opting to simplify their living environments right from the start with the concept of less being more.

Many contemporary and modern selections are naturally compact in design. Now more than ever, contemporary designers are intentionally creating a more diverse selection of furniture options for smaller interiors that function with the benefits of a space twice its size, all while providing originality and style that appeals to each generation in their own way.

Today’s modular living room furniture easily morphs into various configurations and maximizes seating capacity while maintaining intimate face to face interaction with guests. Remember to make the most of all your corners. Many of today’s L-shaped sectional seating options are perfect for this, and depending on your space and your budget, modular seating allows for flexibility when selecting individual units or entire sets to complete your space. An ottoman may be placed together with a single chair for lounging, or grouped with another ottoman in the middle of a room to form a cocktail table. Those same two ottomans may be pushed up against the wall to create more open space and a bench for additional seating while entertaining. And modular furniture allows for versatility and movement so that any space may be customized with a new look over and over again.

Another important thing to remember is that exposed legs will make your home feel open and airy, unlike pieces that sit low on the ground and make compact areas look bottom heavy and cluttered.

Modular shelving, counters and cabinets are also quite ideal for storage needs in compact environments. Units may be mounted on the

wall and combined in appropriate increments to fit any space. Create an entire wall of modular free standing storage units, which then can also strategically double as an instant room divider with minimal effort.

The use of acrylic and glass furniture has also become very popular in compact spaces. Transparent furnishings make a room seem larger, creating an illusion of space, while making a bold statement with their sleek designs. Place a nice vibrant rug underneath an acrylic or glass cocktail table or kitchen table and watch the colors leap through the transparent pieces, creating a “barely there” effect. And acrylic dining chairs complement tables of any style or size. They are also easy to store away in almost every room of your home in between entertaining family and friends.

Make wise table choices, especially when kitchen and dining room spaces combine. Round tables are naturally space-saving as bulky corners are eliminated. Shelves, drawers and extra surface space are often built in on each end of compact dual use kitchen and dining room tables for maximum storage and efficiency. For a different dining experience, choose a narrow format for your table that extends directly out from the wall and leaves plenty of space for your other furnishings. You may place a bench on one side, chairs on the other or mix and match as you desire.

By adding wheels to your furniture, you receive the benefit of moving it to create additional space as needed. Use a table with wheels as a kitchen island when it is time to prepare your meals, then push it up against the wall to open up the kitchen when not in use. Or, move it to an entirely different room to store away. Just make sure you lock the wheels in between movement.

An office space can easily merge with a living space if executed in the right way. Use a lean simple desk in a statement color and place it behind your sofa. Keep your desk clutter free and well-lit with a desk lamp, eliminating the need for an additional end table and lamp in your living room. A desk with narrow legs creates additional space for an item or two to fit directly below it. Convert a sleek console table into a desk and vice versa.

In your bedroom, try using a headboard that also doubles as a bookshelf, whether it be placed on the floor or mounted on the wall. Many beds are offering drawers or storage cubes underneath the bed, already built into the frame. Fold-away, hideaway or “murphy beds” are commonly used in compact spaces and are often placed inside home office areas allowing work spaces to transform into sleeping arrangements for visiting guests.

There is a wide variety of incredibly comfortable sofa beds on the market today, allowing home owners to maintain stylish seating with an extra sleep option as an added bonus. Beds may also fold up and be hidden when not in use. Trundle beds are another great space-saving option, especially for younger children or grandchildren. Wall-mounted dressers will also free up floor space in your bedroom and incorporate a look in your room that is uniquely creative. HFM

MADE IN AMERICAMITCHELL GOLD + BOB WILLIAMS“A day doesn’t go by that we and our workforce and our customers don’t benefit from our earth-friendly upholstery being made in America. The skilled artisans at our modern factory in the town of Taylorsville, North Carolina, are the heart and soul of our company. Crafting our upholstery here lets Bob and me personally work with them to achieve outstanding comfort in our furnishings as well as comfort and safety for our team by making smart choices in materials, manufacturing methods, and work environment. Making our upholstery here also means more jobs for the U.S. economy. And it lets us offer career benefits designed to make people’s lives, and their families’ lives, better and easier, such as our on-site, not-for-profit, education-based daycare center for the children of employees and members of our community. Also key: It has given us the opportunity to continually take our environmental responsibility to new levels, from making our cushions free of fire-retardant chemicals to sourcing our wood frames from local domestic partners to recycling, upcycling, and saving energy through new technologies. We’ve upheld this commitment since we started — not since it became fashionable. And in recent years we’ve been helped in this by the Sustainable Furnishings Council, of which we’re a founding member and I’m on the board.

Over our 26 years in business, we’ve seen exciting changes and much growth, including opening a national chain of Signature Stores. However, one thing will not change: our commitment to manufacturing our upholstery in the USA.”

-- Mitchell Gold, Chair-Man

AMERICAN LEATHER“We’re proud to say our products are made in America, especially when so much of our industry has gone offshore. For us, it’s not about price and just making more money, it’s about doing the right thing. And doing the right thing by our founder, and for our employees, is to make our furniture here in America. It’s why he founded the company. We stand by it and it works.”

As you start your fabric selection process there are four key factors to keep in mind: color, durability, style and any special considerations within your home environment.

Color is typically the first thing that a person considers when it comes to selecting a fabric for their furniture, bedding ensemble, drapery or window treatment. Make sure the color you choose is something that you will be happy with for a while and avoid trendy colors that may fade in popularity over time. It is usually best to also limit the use of extremely light and delicate colored fabrics around small children and pets. Keep in mind that bold colors usually work best in larger rooms since you will have more space to balance them out with your furniture and wall colors.

Durability is a very important factor in fabric selection, especially if you are planning to place your sofa or chair in a high-traffic area in your home. You should also take into consideration who will be using your sofa. If you allow your pets to share your furniture with you, then you may want to consider a microfiber fabric or a leather option since both are able to withstand heavy use and are much easier to clean. Because microfiber and leather do not have loops, your pet’s claws are not able to get caught in them. Woven patterns also hold up longer than printed ones. So do denser fabrics, which contain higher thread counts and tight weaves. Every home and every room will have different requirements so make your selections according to your own personal needs and lifestyle.

Style is something that is very unique to each individual. Keep the style of your room in mind when choosing the style of your fabric. For instance, a traditional fabric tends to look best on a traditional style frame. And remember to always scale your fabric patterns to the size of your furniture and overall room dimensions. A large dramatic pattern might work better on a larger piece of furniture or in a larger room, whereas a smaller more elegant pattern may show better in a smaller space.

Special Considerations should be given to your home’s environment when it comes to fabric. Is there a lot of consistent sunlight in your room? Is there dampness anywhere? Does anyone in your family have allergies? Consider selecting a fabric that is fade resistant if your piece of furniture will be placed next to a window or area that brings large amounts of sunlight into your room. If you live in a humid climate, you may need to find a fabric that is specially treated for mildew resistance. Allergy sufferers often prefer microfibers because they are lint free and do not attract dust particles as much as certain other fabrics do. Leather is another good option for individuals suffering with allergies. HFM

In today’s hectic online world, consumers now have the ability to shop for items in their home 24/7. The choices are endless, the prices are extremely competitive, and shipping is often times free. So why would anyone want to shop in person for their lighting, or anything else for that matter? Here are some compelling reasons why you should strongly consider using the services of a dedicated lighting showroom for your individual lighting needs.

First of all, a lighting showroom allows you to see and touch the product yourself. Sometimes information presented online is difficult to interpret, for example, the exact shade of an actual finish or the overall scope of the product’s size. It is extremely common for someone to order something online, only to discover once it arrives that it is nothing at all as they had envisioned. If you choose to use a dedicated lighting showroom, you are able to see the exact product or a similar product first-hand, which helps you determine its overall craftsmanship, general quality, size and color. If the product is not available on the showroom floor, paper catalogs are available that may offer a broader perspective than what is offered on a computer or mobile device screen. It is particularly useful to view lamps and lampshades in person since shade fabric often determines the amount of useful light that is emitted. The same is also true for any lighting source since light output is generally the primary reason for purchasing a light fixture in the first place.

Secondly, a lighting showroom offers you the expert service and advice of a lighting designer, who will walk you through an entire selection process which involves many important factors such as size, finish, suitability for the required space, light output, and energy efficiency. They are also willing to share their knowledge on industry best practices based on their experience. Most consumers are not familiar with lighting requirements and often end up with products that do not provide adequate lighting or are not the proper scale for their room. The services of a lighting designer are generally included in the price of the products purchased and will end up saving a consumer from making costly mistakes, in addition to establishing a trusted relationship for future needs.

Finally, a lighting showroom offers customized personal service. If you need to return an item or a product that has been damaged during shipment, the showroom serves as a liaison between you and the manufacturer and they are able to help resolve any issues in a timely manner. If minor repair is required, there is generally someone on staff who can fix the problem for you in-house. The service offered by a lighting showroom is very personal because each customer is a unique individual with specific needs for decorating their home or office.

So why would someone not want to use the services of a lighting showroom? Generally, the reason comes back to price. Businesses with little overhead can typically offer their products at a lower price point, and this is very appealing to most price-conscious shoppers. These same businesses are generally open 24 hours online which allows for shopping to be squeezed into an already hectic lifestyle. Yet, the additional services and benefits that a dedicated lighting showroom offers are truly invaluable and in the end are definitely cost effective. And most lighting showrooms offer special sales, discounts and in-store promotions for their customers in addition to an online feature that is easily accessible at the customer’s convenience. HFM

THE VALUE OF USING ALIGHTING SHOWROOM

What is the best way to determine the actual size of the chandelier I need for my space? “A good rule of thumb is to add the length and the width of a room together in feet and then use this same number in inches to determine the appropriate diameter of the chandelier.”

What is the optimal height to hang pendant lights over my kitchen island?“Kitchen pendants should clear the head of the tallest family member when they are standing. They should also not obstruct any important views. Typical heights are 36-48 inches from the top of your countertop. Start your row of lights 12-15 inches from either end of your island or table and space them evenly within that span.”

How close should I mount my bathroom wall sconces together for optimal lighting? “It is best to mount bathroom wall sconces on either side of the mirror, 36-40 inches apart from one another in order to cast even illumination across your face. Position the fixtures so that the bottom edge of each shade is slightly below eye level, or approximately 60-65 inches from your floor.”

How tall should my table lamps be on my bedroom nightstand in order to give me the most efficient light for reading?“You will want the bottom of your lamp shade to be just slightly below your line of sight. Usually this means 16-18 inches from the top of your mattress. A table lamp that is 26-28 inches in height (measuring the base and shade together) is usually the best option.”

You would not run a marathon or hike a mountain without the correct gear, yet despite spending a third of our lives sleeping, most of us have not adequately chosen the proper mattress. You might be tempted to blame your budget on choosing a more economical mattress or a mattress that does not completely meet your needs, but if you take into consideration that getting more sleep can ultimately help you lose weight, improve your memory and even help you live longer, the additional cost is definitely well worth it.

If you have difficulty falling or staying asleep it could be due to your mattress not being comfortable enough or not providing the right support in order to relax your body and mind into its required sleeping stages. When your body is allowed to rest in its natural position, your muscles are relaxed and you sleep more sound and wake up more refreshed.

Recent studies indicate that four out of five people complain about some form of back pain and often this back pain is associated with an improper mattress. A good mattress is one that is comfortable and yet firm enough so that the body is properly supported during the entire sleeping process. Regardless of the type of mattress you decide to purchase, always evaluate a mattress for its comfort, support, durability and space.

Comfort: Luxurious new cushioning materials and extra-soft surface treatments create a plusher more comfortable feel in mattresses today.

Support: A good mattress will gently support your body at all points and keep your spine in the same shape as a person with a good standing posture. Pay special attention to your shoulders, hips and lower back because they are the heaviest parts of your body.

Durability: The quality of the materials used and how they are put together determines how long a mattress will provide you with comfort and support.

Space: Cramped quarters can turn sleeping into a nightly wrestling match. A healthy person moves anywhere from 40-60 times a night, including dozens of full body turns. You need freedom of motion while you sleep and you also need freedom of motion to help you relax while getting to sleep. Make sure your mattress allows you enough room to move around comfortably throughout the night. Most people do not realize that two people sleeping in a full or double mattress only have as much personal space as a baby sleeping in a crib. It is also recommended that bed partners do not buy anything that is smaller than a queen-sized mattress.

Latex mattresses are quickly becoming the newest sleep system “craze” in North America. They are already extremely popular in Europe. Latex foam mattresses are made from the sap of rubber trees. They offer a pressure equalization property by spreading out evenly underneath you causing no pressure point discomfort while you sleep. If you suffer from back problems, sleep disorders, or you have a tendency to toss and turn, you may want to consider a latex mattress. All of the major brands carry their own version so just ask your sleep expert associate which options they have available.

Make sure you incorporate the S.L.E.E.P. test when buying your new mattress:Select a mattressLie down in your typical sleep positionEvaluate your level of comfort and supportEducate yourself about each selectionPartners should test mattresses together

Always choose a reputable bedding store or gallery that you trust. It is also very important to work with knowledgeable bedding experts who are able to help guide you in finding a mattress that best suits your needs. Always “test drive” your mattress inside the store or gallery. Make sure you wear comfortable, loose fitting clothes.

Remove your shoes and lie down on each mattress in several different positions. Spend more time testing the position you normally sleep in at night for the best results. And remember that many retail stores or galleries offer products that are exclusive to them so be careful trying to comparison shop by brand only. Make sure you are comparing apples to apples when looking at what each brand and store or gallery offers.

Shopping for a new mattress may be time consuming, but selecting the proper mattress to meet your needs and your partner’s needs is well worth the investment towards your overall health and well-being. HFM

COLORSIn today’s outdoor environments, navy has become the new neutral following indoor furniture and fashion trends. It is most commonly paired with coral, gray, aqua, cream, white or gold accents. Yellow tones from bright yellow to mustard work well with grays or navy as well and balance out their intensity. Neon yellows and aqua colors add a fun, beachy look to any outdoor setting and blues in all hues continue to dominate color options and signify warmth in our outdoor spaces. The use of shells, other ocean themed materials and nautical elements mix well with various shades of blue while a combination of blues and greens create a spa-like serene atmosphere. Elegant purples paired with creams, whites and grays are commonly used for more formal and regal outdoor designs.

STYLESThere are two outdoor styles that have gained in popularity this year. The first style is what many are calling “artfully dishelved,” meaning that everything is not strategically placed. This creates a more comfortable, homey, “lived in” feel. Simplistic designs generate a more relaxed environment. Have fun mixing and matching different fabric patterns, styles and textures, which we also see being done in

the fashion industry. There has been a nostalgic resurgence of bean bags evolving in various sizes and forms that are now made in materials suitable for outdoor living.

The second style is a more sophisticated yet comfortable option. Many manufacturers are creating outdoor furniture that mimics their indoor counterparts with refined grace such as tufted upholstery options that are weathered and treated for outdoor use. Even industrial furniture is starting to transition this year from a cold, utilitarian feel to one that is more comfortable with more polished textures.

OUTDOOR AMENITIESOutdoor fireplaces, fire pits, fire features and patio heaters create a warm and inviting option for keeping your guests comfortable

while outdoors. Whether you want your heating option to be portable or more permanent, make sure you check with your local fire department regarding their outdoor fire codes and place all heating devices away from potentially flammable items such as trees or shrubbery. You should also use a spark guard and

a flame resistant mat, especially if your heating device will be sitting on a wooden deck or be positioned close to your home.

Fully equipped outdoor kitchens, including grills and pizza ovens, also continue to be built into outdoor space designs and many homeowners are installing indoor/outdoor fans to reduce temperatures in the summertime, discourage insects, and re-circulate smoke, heat and aromas emitted from wood fired ovens and grills.

Placing outdoor bathtubs on upper decks is an interesting trend that has started to spread. It gives a unique twist to the more traditional offerings of free standing outdoor shower stalls.

With any outdoor setting, it is important to provide a mixture of comfortable seating areas for your guests in addition to areas where they are able to stand and chat around a cocktail table if they prefer. And make sure you have technical accessibility to conveniently use smart phones and devices as needed. HFM

“When thinking about incorporating permanent botanicals into your home interiors, think about them as individual sculptures. Art is infused into every facet of home décor, including decorative florals. Monotone color schemes are very fashionable and au currant in homes of every style and magnitude. Simplicity and modest silhouettes are influencing florals and botanicals in forthcoming contemporary designs.

There are many ways to make a bold statement with your florals. Use them as accent pieces or as the center of attention in your room. Add a splash of dramatic color without going overboard. On the other hand, if you keep your colors more neutral, you will have the flexibility to move your arrangements from one room to another with ease.

Blending branches and tall stems into your florals is an elegant way to create dimension in a small space or complement a room that has a high ceiling. The sky is the limit with permanent botanicals. Use your own creativity and imagination to enhance the look of your home.”

~ Scott Smart, Floral Designer, Reflections Home Furnishings

A Better Look, At A Better Price

When you purchase a hand-knotted rug, this means that a skilled weaver has individually tied every single knot throughout the rug by hand, therefore each hand-knotted rug is unique, one-of-a-kind, and an individual work of art. It is also the reason they cost more than other types of rugs. Depending on how many knots are in each square inch (50-160 knots per inch is typical and 400 knots per square inch is extraordinary), it can take more than a full year for one weaver to complete one 9 x 12 rug. Hand-knotted rugs are considered an investment. They are able to withstand high levels of traffic and most will not show any signs of wear and tear for many years.

The primary materials used in making hand-knotted rugs are wool, silk and cotton. The combination of these three materials produce the strongest rugs. Wool is the dominant material used in hand-knotted rugs. Silk is mainly used as an accent material due to its strength and overall cost. Cotton is often used within the foundation of the rug, but it tends not to be seen within the pile. If you are presented with a silk rug option and the price sounds too good to be true, there is a way to test it. Ask the rug expert to pull a strand of thread from the rug and burn it with a lighter. If it is a silk fiber, it will smell like burning hair. If it is cotton or rayon, it will smell like burned paper.

A quality loom is the main piece of equipment needed to produce a straight and sturdy hand-knotted rug. Looms range in various sizes and complexities. Nomadic rugs are often made on a horizontal loom and other types of rugs are often made on vertical looms. After the loom is set up, the warp, or the vertical threads are tied on the loom. These are the threads that will eventually become the fringe on the completed rug. The weft runs horizontally and intertwines with the warp to create the foundation of the rug. The

weft also creates the edges of the rug, which are also called selvedges. The selvedges actually hold the rug together. The knots are then tied to the warp threads. The weaver uses a special type of hooked knife, which is called a gollab, to cut the knot. They tie the knot with their hands, then tighten the knot with a comb-like tool called a beater. To finish the process they will evenly trim the piles on the face of the rug with a pair of scissors. A very skilled weaver is able to tie around one thousand knots per hour.

There are two types of knots that are used to construct a hand-knotted rug~a Persian knot and a Turkish knot. Most countries will use the Persian knot, but it just depends upon the region where the weaver is located in addition to how the weaving tradition was passed along throughout the generations of weavers within that particular region.

The Persian knot, also referred to as the Sennet knot, is asymmetrical. These knots are open to one side and do not leave gaps, making it less bulky than Turkish knots and easier to make rounded or floral patterns on the rug. Persian hand-knotted rugs often originate from Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Nepal, Tibet and China.

The Turkish knot, also referred to as the Ghiordes knot, is symmetrical and can be identified by two little bumps or nodes within one knot on the back side of the rug (also commonly called a double knot). Turkish hand-knotted rugs originate from Turkey, Armenia, Azerbaijan and northwestern Iran and are often designed in unique shapes and sizes. They are great investment pieces to pass down to future generations.

The most important step in finding the best hand-knotted rug is to find a rug expert that you are able to trust. A good rug expert will be one that is knowledgeable about their product and takes the time to educate you on the quality and the story behind each rug. They should be able to answer any additional questions you may have before making your purchase. HFM

Purchasing a new sofa can be very stressful since you will more than likely be living with the decision for several years. When shoppers come to the Mart looking for a new sofa,

they will encounter endless possibilities. Each showroom offers a different selection of quality, style and price point and has design experts on hand ready to assist you with

choosing the perfect sofa based on your exact needs. Designers from four of our showrooms share some of their expert advice and tips on how to purchase a sofa that is right for you.

WHICH SOFA STYLE IS RIGHT FOR YOU?

GOOD’S HOME FURNISHINGSWith so many manufacturers offering customers the ability to customize their sofas now, there are countless ways you can personalize your sofa to your exact preference. A sofa with a rounded arm, tends to be more traditional but using an exposed wood base or covering it with some soft aniline leather will make it stand out more and

give it a modern, rustic feel, which is very popular today, especially for second homes located in the mountains or near a lake. Intricate details may be added such as variety of nail head trims or you can also add your own personality to it by mixing in some fun and eclectic pillows. Take a traditional dark brown tufted, Chesterfield sofa and add some pizazz to it with pillows bearing modern deer head or a flame stitch that has made a grand comeback from the 80’s. By adding these personal touches, you have transformed the traditional look of a rustic modern clean line sofa. And when you change out your pillows each season, it can make you feel like you have a new sofa every few months. So, have fun and make it your very own.

HICKORY PARK FURNITURE GALLERIESQuality construction is key to the longevity of any sofa. A sofa with a kiln-dried, hardwood frame made from Oak, Poplar or Maple will not warp or crack. Seat support and construction will also add years of life (and comfort) to your sofa. 8-way hand-tied springs are the time honored traditional method of support where the springs are hand-tied in eight directions for even wear and suspension throughout the frame. Allen suggests that you ask your salesperson for written manufacturer information on how the frame is constructed. Burns also adds that seat cushions need to be considered as there are many options. A spring down cushion consists of a spring system inside, wrapped with a polyfiber

material then wrapped with feather and down. This is considered top of the line and has a nice firm feel to it and will not lose its shape over time. A similar construction without the springs will allow you to sink into the seat slightly more. A cushion filled of all down typically will cost you more and even though it will be very comfortable, just remember that it will lose its shape and need to be fluffed each time you get up.

SIMPLY HOME BY LINDY’S FURNITUREStart with the basics – measure your space and bring these measurements with you when shopping. As a

word of caution, make sure the size you select will fit in the front door! Next, select a sofa that fits your lifestyle and decide how the sofa will be used. If the sofa is for lounging or napping, consider a deep seat with rolled arms that are the right height for your head. If you plan to entertain guests, consider a more traditional sofa with firm seats and shorter seat depth. Test drive the sofa before buying. Lounge, lie down, and make sure it feels like it should and is a good fit, because more than anything else, that is the sign of a truly great sofa. Function and fashion can both be met while maintaining your budget for the perfect sofa.

SOUTHERN STYLE FINE FURNITUREWhen choosing a fabric for your sofa, first determine how much the sofa will be used. If you have small children or pets to consider, then use a medium weight fabric such as a microfiber or leather for

durability. A chair in a living room that will not get used much will be able to handle a lighter weight fabric such as silk. Next, look at colors strategically. Be sure you can live with the color you select for a long period of time. Solid colors or patterns with a small repeat that almost look solid would be the safest way to go, but when you select an unexpected color in various shades of pink, yellow or turquoise, you immediately turn a boring sofa into a dramatic fashion statement.

If a pattern is what you prefer, then just make sure the style of the sofa does not conflict with it. For example, a sofa with straight lines will typically look better if you choose a pattern with similar designs such as geometric angles

or stripes. Floral patterns or all over motifs complement sofas with rounded edges while

patterns with a large scale often add a more modern, updated look to the sofa and your room.

If this is your first trip to Hickory, make sure you set aside enough time to venture out and experience some of the region’s local flare. Hickory is a city that is rich in tradition and craftsmanship, and one of its greatest strengths is its sense of community. And locals truly love to share their community with our visitors. Hickory is a quaint little town nestled in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains with breathtaking views of mountain vistas and natural greenery that surrounds you just about everywhere you turn. Western North Carolina is a wonderland for outdoor activities, and Catawba County offers an abundance of scenic parks that are spectacular destinations for hiking and canoeing. Lake Hickory frequently hosts an assortment of fishing tournaments, and recreational boating, dinner and charter cruises have become popular pastimes, with four marinas conveniently located along the lake. Regional wineries, vineyards and stress-reducing spas are just minutes away from the Mart.

Hickory also offers an abundance of historical attractions and sporting activities throughout the region, including a historic motor speedway that has been credited as the longest continually operating motor speedway in the country. Our minor league baseball team just won their first South Atlantic League championship in 2015, so swing by and catch a game if you are here visiting us April-September. Public and private golf courses are plentiful for both the novice and experienced golfer.

Hickory has always enjoyed a strong tie to the arts and is home to the state’s second oldest art museum along with several community performing and cultural arts theatres, a choral society and a symphony. Our esteemed university hosts a number of cultural events throughout the year, including a legendary

Writer’s Series where renowned authors share inspiring stories behind their works. Stop by Hickory’s local cinema for daily movie options or monthly screenings by the local film society. And Hickory’s science center houses the only marine touch pool in North Carolina with live sharks and stingrays!

You definitely cannot leave without making a trip to downtown Hickory where you will find a variety of unique retail shops, restaurants, pubs, craft breweries, wine shops, entertainment

venues and special events all within the Heart of Hickory. Open air outdoor restaurant seating enables you to experience all four glorious seasons while savoring local cuisine from award winning chefs. The farmer’s market supporting local produce and specialty vendors runs annually from April through November. The arts scene continues to thrive, hosting monthly gallery crawls featuring eclectic pieces from local artists and potters. MILLCRAFT AMISH FURNITURE“We have worked long and hard to accomplish a dream of ours. That dream is to build a company with value. Value that reflects our convictions and our commitment. Value that expresses itself in the work of our hands to produce some of the finest American-Made Amish furniture around. Value that will work for you and work for all generations — yours and ours.”

~ The Miller Family, Amish Builders

CANAL DOVER AMISH FURNITURE“We’ve been crafting heirloom quality ‘bench-crafted’ furniture since 1989, using experienced American-Made Amish and Mennonite craftsmen to build one piece of quality furniture at a time. Our craftsmen honor the strong work ethic that has been passed down from generation to generation. They pay attention to those intricate details that often times tend to go unnoticed in a high production assembly line.”

~ Joe Heatwole, National Sales Manager

Amish Furniture is built by Amish craftsmen primarily in Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania. Genuine Amish furniture is not built in a factory or on an assembly line and is well-known for being made with 100% solid wood. Each piece of wood is carefully selected by hand and built to the customer’s exact specifications. Great attention is placed on the details of the wood throughout the entire furniture making process. Construction of Amish furniture is guaranteed for a lifetime, which ensures heirloom quality pieces will be passed down from generation to generation.

The Amish craftsmen pride themselves in their work and view their product as a piece of intricate art in addition to a piece of fine quality furniture that will be used and enjoyed for several years. Amish furniture making is often a skill passed down from one family member to the next. Most Amish children rarely attend school beyond eighth grade, often staying home to help their families make furniture in their shops or assist them with household

chores. Amish families become known for their specific product niches and personalized designs. Many Amish craftsmen tend to focus on one or two categories of furniture such as outdoor, living room, bedroom, or dining and perfect their skills on those specific products throughout their lifetime. Amish furniture designs are completely original and no two pieces are ever the same. Even in a matching bedroom suite, there tends to be grain differences due to the natural characteristics of solid wood. Each piece is truly an original work of art.

Amish furniture is also highly valued for its sustainability because it is made with a variety of hardwoods including Oak, Cherry, Hickory, Maple, Walnut and Elm. Northern Red Oak is a very popular choice for its warmth, color and durability and it is typically grown in the Eastern part of the United States, predominately in the Appalachian Mountains. White Oak is slightly harder than Red Oak and has an antique look to it that makes it ideal for Mission and Shaker

style furniture production. Cherry has a light reddish-brown color that will darken when exposed to light. Maple is significantly harder than Oak and continues to grow in popularity. Elm and Walnut are both fairly stiff and heavy. Walnut also holds stain, paint and polish extremely well. Hickory is harder than Oak and distinguishes itself with its light and dark color contrasts. Amish styles and trends have truly transcended over the years. Early on, most Amish styles were primarily traditional in design and most Amish craftsmen were only known for their Shaker, Mission and Queen Anne styles. The Shaker style is simple, yet elegant and has a very basic design aimed at functionality and durability. Mission furniture is characterized by straight lines and exposed joinery and often considered to be a bit more modern with clean lines. The Queen Anne style is considered very traditional with ornate moldings, unique foot details and carved ornamentation.

Throughout the years, Amish craftsmen have adapted and expanded their offerings to include a wide range of additional styles such as French Country, Rustic, Southwestern, Transitional, and even Modern and Contemporary designs. Nowadays customers seem to be trending a bit more towards a more casual look and there is also an elegant rustic décor being used throughout many mountain and lake homes. Because of this, a variety of rustic wood options and finishes are now available on almost any piece of Amish furniture. And Amish builders have the ability to customize any piece of furniture that your heart desires. All you need to do is sketch it out and they will build it to your exact specifications and match it to any custom stains or paints you prefer. HFM

If you are looking for stylish, comfortable furniture that actually improves with age, then consider investing in leather. Leather is extremely durable so this option is definitely worth the additional investment. Since leather is a natural product, aging actually brings out its natural patina, making it even more beautiful over time.

One of the biggest misconceptions with leather is that it gets too cold in the winter and too hot in the summer. This may be true for the leather in your car since most of it is painted leather in order to meet federal safety rules, but because of this, it cannot breathe. So when you sit in a car in January, the seats are very cold and take a much longer time to adjust to the correct temperature than if the seats were porous. The same is true with the heat in the middle of August. It is going to be very uncomfortable because the leather cannot breathe. With leather furniture however, the leather actually takes the temperature of your body within a matter of just 12 seconds. In the winter your leather furniture will warm up to your body heat and in the summer it remains cool since it is natural and has the ability to breathe.

Leather comes in a variety of options from color to grade. It is very important to choose leather furniture that best suits your lifestyle.

For instance, you will need a more durable grade of leather for kids and pets than if you are living on your own without extensive activity. Our leather experts will be able to let you know which type of leather is best for our home based on your specific needs.

There are several ways to maintain your leather’s premium condition over its lifetime. Always protect your leather furniture from fading by limiting its exposure to sun and direct light. And leave at least two feet between your leather furniture and any form of heat source within your home to prevent the leather from drying out our cracking.

Wipe your leather furniture down regularly with a soft leather cleaner and a soft cloth and vacuum dust and debris from your furniture’s crevices. It is also extremely important to apply a leather conditioner regularly, at least once every 6-12 months depending on how much you use it. Blot any spills immediately with a clean, absorbent cloth and allow it to air dry. Most general cleaning agents are too harsh for your leather furniture. Avoid using any oils that contain silicon or wax and anything with ammonia or alkaline and stay away from furniture polish, saddle soaps, leather wipes, or any type of leather car seat cleaner. The process of how leather is made for saddles is different than the process used for leather furniture. And most leather wipes that people use to clean their car seats have been known to damage leather furniture because the cleaning agent used inside them is far too strong for leather furniture.

For minor or slight scratches on the surface, use a chamois, a microfiber cloth, or you can even use clean fingers to gently buff out the affected area. Using a hairdryer on low heat, with it slightly raised off your furniture, will also help bring the leather’s natural oil and wax up to the surface. From here you are able to simply rub out most of your smaller marks with a nice soft cloth. HFM

For all of your leather needs, visit Leather and More on Level 4 at the South Entrance, a dedicated leather gallery inside Hickory Furniture Mart, specializing in American-Made fine leather products for your home.

MADE IN AMERICA

HUNTINGTON HOUSE“For three generations our family has had the great fortune to be a part of the furniture industry producing the highest quality custom upholstery in the foothills of the North Carolina Mountains. The time honored construction techniques that we use today are essentially unchanged from those used by my grandfather over 60 years ago. While some technologies and materials have changed through the years, the standards for quality and craftsmanship have not. As we continue to grow, we proudly honor our heritage by training the next generation of craftspeople to carry on the skills and culture that have been the foundation of our success. Fashion trends constantly change, but our commitment to quality, comfort and value never does. When you invest in furniture from Huntington House you can rest assured that you are buying the best quality available and produced by the most skilled craftspeople in the world.”

~ Corey Teague, President

GAT CREEK“Made in America means more than simply saving a job; it means doing the job right. We approach furniture manufacturing in a holistic manner and take pride both in what we create and how we create it. We employ over 120 people in West Virginia and use no assembly lines.

Each piece we build is personally signed and dated by the artisan who created it. While other companies have closed factories, we have expanded and upgraded our finishing operations and now offer a Worry Free Finish that helps protect our furniture during everyday use. Thanks to our locally sourced material and production, we avoid oil-intensive shipping, deforestation and the unmitigated pollution that’s allowed with overseas production.

In 2012, we won the furniture industry’s Sage Award for our innovative approach to sustainability. We are a founding member of the Sustainable Furniture Council and have earned Silver Exemplary Status.

Simply stated, we care equally about our products, our people and the environment.”

~ Gat Caperton, Owner & CEO

AMERICAN CLASSICS “We at American Classics take pride in every piece of furniture that we build. Every piece is held to the highest standards and is built by some of the best craftsmen in the furniture industry. We combine our solid hardwood frames with a true 8-way hand-tied seating system. Our leather hides are hand-picked for only the highest selection of quality top grain and/or full grain leather. We also use only the best foams for our seating cores. Putting this together will ensure a great looking and great sitting piece of furniture that will last for years to come. By manufacturing at this level here in America, it allows us to have the quality controls that we feel we would not be able to achieve from producing our product overseas.”

Hickory Furniture Mart has been well-known for years as one of North Carolina’s most trusted furniture and design resources and international travel destinations. The Mart offers a unique mix of first line showrooms (where custom furniture is available to order for any preference), galleries (special sections devoted to specific manufacturers), outlets (where discounted product is offered immediately “as is” off the showroom floor) and factory direct outlets (where special product is brought in directly from the manufacturers’ factories and also available immediately and sold off the floor “as is”).

Typical outlet savings range from 65-80 percent off normal retail prices. Most outlet product consists of retail showroom samples, overruns, closeouts, one of a kind High Point Market samples and custom orders that retailers have canceled or customers have returned for various reasons. New outlet product arrives direct from factories and retail

showrooms daily so outlet inventories are constantly changing. If you find something you seriously want in an outlet, it is best to secure your purchase right away since most outlets are not able to hold product and sales are offered on a first come, first serve basis.

Once an item is purchased in an outlet, it is rare that the same exact piece will be offered again. Most customers end up mixing and matching outlet items with custom product when furnishing their homes. The savings you can find on a piece of furniture inside an outlet will allow you to invest a little more in that custom fabric you need to place on another piece of furniture that you saw in a retail showroom and could not live without. And as an additional perk, you are able to take outlet product home with you immediately.

If you find out that you will be entertaining family at the last minute and need to furnish

that spare room, an outlet is the perfect place to pick up any additional items you may need in a short period of time. We have received several visits from customers who have experienced a natural disaster in their hometowns. They need furniture immediately and most of their local resources are typically backlogged with so much unexpected demand. Many of our outlets and retail showrooms will work together with victims and offer additional discounts with requested expedited delivery for entire communities affected by these types of disasters. Outlet product is also great for rental properties or second homes as you are able to furnish more rooms for much less.

Stop by and visit all of the outlets and showrooms inside Hickory Furniture Mart and take advantage of the tremendous selection and savings available throughout the entire year. HFM

Men have never stopped collecting, we are just seeing a more modern version of it and that new phenomenon has been appropriately termed “mantiques.” A mantique is an antique or collectible that appeals mainly to men ~ manly collectibles ~ oddities, curiosities and conversation starters that defy the traditional rules of antiquing. Many women cannot understand the allure of these pieces, and that seems to make it all the more appealing to men.

Collectibles are being pursued by a new generation that is eager to enhance their homes with more masculine vintage décor. And many men are looking for a tangible connection to the physical world and a refreshing escape from endless hours staring at smartphones, tablets and computer screens. Antique hunting is challenging and it gives you the opportunity to spend more time outdoors and take spontaneous road trips through quaint rural towns in hopes of discovering that next hidden treasure for you to share with your family and friends.

Mantiques are not just about nostalgia, they are great investments as well. As Baby Boomers continue to downsize, exciting new inventory continues to be added to the collectibles market. Rare and unusual items are most valuable. History and objects that highlight history also hold great value … gadgety, fascinating, mechanical, pieces of engineering history ~ everything from war plane ejector seats to antique maps of famous expeditions, to globes, airplane components, authentic battleship parts,

and sunken treasure artifacts that have been recovered and restored. And don’t forget about significant items from all those thrilling travel adventures (envision Indiana Jones). Famous celebrity birthdays and milestone anniversaries of historical relevancy often generate renewed interest in specific items as well, such as the 150th anniversary of the end to the Civil War. These collectibles will continue to increase in demand and value.

Other interests range from fishing, hunting, rusty oil cans, racy pin up calendars and posters, vintage license plates, pocket watches, unique barware, aged stoves, pocket knives, antique tools, old tin cigarette signs, coins, sports trading cards, classic automobiles, old racing cars and motorcycles, fossilized bones, medieval torture devices, beer collectibles, golf memorabilia and the list goes on and on.

If you do not have the time to plan your own personal treasure hunting trip down a quaint rural highway, allow our showrooms to find exactly what you may be looking for in “mantique” décor. HFM
