The demand for HIM professionals is expected to increase much faster than the
average job market, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Driven by
new information privacy regulations and the need for readily available patient
information, careers in health information management are among the 20occupations projected to grow fastest through 2012. While entry-level salaries
vary depending on education and experience, HIM professionals’ average salaries
range from $50,000-$75,000. Additional experience leads to upper management
and leadership positions. The American Health Information Management
Association reports higher-level salaries up to and over $100,000. The broad
variety of potential job titles in HIM reflects the range of opportunities in this field.

Accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and
Information Management Education (CAHIIM), this 1- or 2-year University of
Washington program is for individuals seeking to work with health informatics andinformation management, health data systems, and emerging electronic health
record systems in health care. A key program focus is the use of technology in the
collection of personal health data while including the many facets of the privacy and
security of health information. Graduates are eligible to take the American Health
Information Management (AHIMA) national certifying examination.
