Issue One
February 2014
Hi everyone and a huge welcome back to the start of Term One 2014. from Liane Taylor I hope you all had an enjoyable and safe holiday. 2014 has brought with it for me many exciting changes and one of those changes is my role at Challis which includes me teaching the ‘Keeping Kids Safe’ programme (which I have been doing for a number of years) and introducing two new programmes which are the ‘Virtues Project’ and ‘Fabulous Feelings’ to all Pre Primary’s, Year 1’s and Year 2 classes. As part of the Virtues project I will be highlighting in the newsletters each fortnight what Virtue that the students and I will be working on. If you do see this virtue being practised by your child, pay attention to it and acknowledge it or even recognise teach-able moments where the virtue could be practised. As this Monday is Random Acts of Kindness day, our first virtue for the year is..
Kindness
Kindness is showing you care, doing some good to make life better for others. It is being thoughtful about people’s needs. Kindness is showing love and compassion to someone who is sad or needs your help. Kindness is treating yourself and others gently. It is caring about the earth and all living things.
How do you practice it?
You practice kindness by noticing when someone or something needs care. Become sensitive to the world around you. Use your imagination to think of things that give others happiness. – Your parents, your friends, your teachers, your brothers and sisters, and even people you don’t know very well. Find out what habits harm or help the environment and choose kinder ways Think of someone who needs your kindness today. What can you do to be kind? What would you say or do if someone is not being kind to you? How does it feel to be ignored, teased etc?
Welcome back to the start of an awesome year of learning and opportunities! We are delighted with the way children have settled in to their classes and are beginning to make connections with their teacher and classmates. 2014 will be a very different year for the children, staff and parents and we would like to briefly outline some of the changes that have occurred. Mr Strickland is on long service leave for semester One and Mrs Musumeci is the Principal for Challis Primary School in his absence. Mrs O'Donovan is the Principal of Challis Early Childhood Education Centre however both Principals will be working across both schools and will take on different areas of responsibility. The intention is to bring both schools closer together so that there is consistency for children and families plus
improved outcomes in performance. Below are a couple of the changes that are the easiest to explain: The timetable (break times) has changed - 11-11:30 lunch, 1:30-2pm afternoon tea for Yr 1-7 The newsletter will be combined and will be sent home every fortnight (Tues or Wed) Assemblies will be combined, Fridays 8:50-9:30, starting week 4 Behaviour management will be consistently managed through the same processes from K-7 Lunch time clubs will operate based on the interests of the children eg Media club, football/soccer/basketball, board games etc There are many other changes that are important for parents to understand and we will be holding a Parent Forum on Tuesday 18th February from 6-6:45 to explain the changes, clarify any information and answer any questions. We would love to see many parents at this Forum. You might like to stay on for the P and C meeting which directly follows at 7pm. Thank you Parents- From our first three days at school we can see that parents have well prepared their children for the start of the year. Everyone is in school uniform, hair tied back, sensible shoes and book list items all labelled. Thank you for taking the time to prepare so well because this makes a big difference to how comfortable and confident the children feel when returning to school. It is our expectation that the following are not worn to school:
Thongs, shoes with high heels, denim clothing, facial piercings, make-up and false nails. Principals: Mrs Lee Mususmeci and Mrs Louise O’Donovan

Dear Parents, It’s the beginning of a very exciting year for Sport and Physical Education at Challis. We are welcoming the new Early Childhood Education Centre Physical Education teacher – Mr McDowell - who is spearheading the start of lots of new programs to get you active, both during and after school. There will be details of them very soon! To start the year we would like to remind you that students must wear suitable shoes, a hat and bring a water bottle on the day that they play sport or Phys Ed. Head lice outbreaks occur frequently in primary schools. The Department of Health recommends the following method of treatment: 10 day Hair Conditioner treatment

Parents’ can assist in the prevention and control of head lice by checking their children’s hair frequently using the hair conditioner method. Friday is a good day to check hair as treatment can be commenced over the weekend. Please advise the school if your child has head lice. Please consult me if you require further advice on head lice management. MEDICAL CONDITIONS
