Due to the lack of interest shown in the ski champs over the last few years and loosing the use of our previous venue we will not be holding ski champs this year. We will start fresh in 2017. Hopefully we can get the support from the club and turn this event around. Cheers, Brad Inder GBC 856

After a long flight from Queenstown to Perth via Sydney, we were picked up at the airport by our son Scott. After a couple days to relax, meet our new Grandson and complete the final pack for the long drive ahead, we left for Exmouth at 3.45am in the morn-ing of the 2nd Nov. The journey wasn’t without peril however. About 750 kms north of Perth we were pulled over by the Heavy Transport Inspectors (Heavies). Because of the size of the boat and F250, Scott is required to display oversize signs and carry permits. After the tape measure was out and a lot of paper shuf-fling, we were on our way again however during the next 50kms, we experienced two tyre blow outs on the tri axle trailer. With no spares left, we managed to get into Carnarvon (900klms North of Perth) before the local tyre shop closed. Ten minutes later, and two new spares we were on the road again only to experience a third blow out an hour later! We finally made it into Exmouth at around 9.00pm, 17 hours on the road. The next day was spent rig-ging up, unpacking and after the boat was safely on the jetty out-side our house in the Marina, Colin and Scott completed a dummy run with the trailer at each launching ramp dotted around the Ex-mouth Cape as the ramps are generally shallow and do not accom-modate for a boat of this size meaning that is critical to “fish” the tides. That done and all seemed to check out, they booked the trailer in for a complete new set of tyres all round and sat back with a beer anticipating the next 14 days on the water. The first few days out produced a lot of quality 5 Star eating fish. Plenty of Coral Trout, Spanish mackerel and Emperor on the menu. Trish also landed a whopping cobia which was a tasty treat one night. With lots of reports of Blue Marlin being caught and a break in the weather looking likely, Scott, Colin and a crew of another two headed out 50 Nautical Miles (96 klm) in Scott’s 29ft Wellcraft Coastal Tournament to fish an area known as the North-west Shelf. There are several offshore Gas Platforms in this area that offer a haven for pelagic fish on the Blue Marlins menu and where the warmer ocean currents flow.

At around 1:00pm in the afternoon the Long Rigger took a hit and starting peeling off line. Blue Marlin on!! Once the teasers and remaining lines were in, Colin starting chas-ing the fish down at the helm whilst the other crew were running about strapping & harnessing Scott in, clearing the decks and filming. Scott and Colin have fought and landed Black Marlin previously but the Big Indian Ocean Blues are in another whole league of their own. By the time the other rods were in, the Marlin had stripped over 700 metres of 37kilo mono of the big Tiagra reel set at 12 kilos of strike drag pressure and Scott could see the gold of the spool base gleaming through the remainder of the line, hence the urgency to get up and chase them down! The fight continued for over an hour with the fish rising to the surface on several occasions, throwing his head around, bill slic-ing at the air before then diving deep down into the cooler ther-moclines for rest. Finally however, the battle was won and Scott pulled the fish next to boat, one of his deckies leadered the fish and it took three of them to drag its head and front half of its body onto the swim platform at the back for a quick photo prior to be-ing released safely into the water after being towed for a short pe-riod to re-oxygenate the fish. The fish was estimated at 660 -700 pounds (300 -320 kgs) and just on 4mtrs long. The first Blue Mar-lin caught just happened to be by far the strongest and biggest fish landed of the entire trip! The next day Colin was on strike and it wasn’t long before he was harnessed, strapped in and fighting a good size Blue that had also hit the long rigger. This fish displayed the same characteristics as the one landed the day earlier whereby they spend very little time on the surface and the rest way down deep. Colin had the fish for around 45mins until it took a long run and spun around on itself creating slack in the line where the hook then had a chance to slip loose from the big fishes Jaw. But still, I think he was happy enough to fight the most sought after big game species in the world!

Over the two weeks, there were 9 other hook-ups and 1 more raised and even had sailfish free jumping that close to the boat we got splashed, however all managed to fight themselves free. One of these was hooked for one and three quarter hours which Scott fought and even had the plaited double coming onto the spool on several occasions, however the leader being just outside the reach of the deckies (therefore can’t claim as a capture!) and eventually got off right beside the boat. The crew did manage to get some great pictures and underwater video footage of this fish. When compared to the one that Scott landed, this was estimated at much larger at 800 -820 pounds (360-380 kgs). Over the course of the of the two weeks there were Giant Trevally caught on lures, Mackerel and Wahoo leaping as high as 5 meters straight up in the air, amazing snorkelling on the famous Ningaloo reef and to top it all off, a very curious and rare Whale Shark that took a liking to the boat, hung around and literally kissed the tran-som. Our house on the Marina was spectacular with great views, plenty of space for everyone, an amazing outdoor kitchen and pool to relax by and the convenience of its own jetty. All up, we travelled 910 Nautical Mile on the water (1,685 klm) and used 3185 litres of fuel. At a price of $1.65 p/litre (expensive for Australia Standards!) a little over $5000 was the boats fuel bill. The trip back to Perth was pleasingly non-eventful and a lot quick-er despite the head wind although no flat tyres and no transport in-spectors! With the 3,556 Kilometres travelled on land made the whole sea and land journey just over 5000 kilometres (longer than the shortest distance between Australia and New Zealand or three times the length of NZ!!) but most certainly worth it to catch fish of this quality in a remote and beautiful part of Australia with such a healthy and pristine marine environment.
