More than 400 parents, carers and grandparents and over 300 children joined in Wansdyke’s Play Association’s activities at Trinity First School in Frome on Friday 1st June. A throne fi t for the young kings and queens of Frome offered a suitable space to oversee the proceedings as children and adults painted each other’s faces, made fl ags and decorated crowns. A great time was had by all.

The year 5s at Selwood Academy that did not go to Kilve Court enjoyed an exciting and fun fi lled week. On Monday a farmer called Neil Darwent came in and told us where cheese sandwiches came from and how they were made. We found out that it takes a year to make. First you need to grow the wheat and turn it into fl our you add water, yeast, and salt. To make the cheese you milk a cow, add good bacteria to the milk, then you sieve it and let it mould for about 2 months. Abracadabra it’s a cheese sandwich!
Luckily Tuesday was a sunny day so we headed off to Stourhead gardens, we drew temples and plants. When we arrived we split into groups and no matter where we were we could always see Mrs Ibbitson sitting in her camping chair sketching the wonderful view ahead of her. At lunch we were allowed to buy ice cream! That was the best part of the day!
In the morning on Wednesday Wendy, a lady who works at Pampurred Pets in Frome, came in to tell us about pet care. She brought in a hamster, a guinea pig and a rat. They were all very cute but they needed a lot of looking after. In the afternoon two people came in and did a fencing demonstration for years 5 and 6. It was an awesome day.
The coach journey to @Bristol took over an hour on Thursday morning, but it was well worth it when we got there. We liked the hamster wheel best and the wobbly room. The wobbly room is where the room was tiled and you feel very wonky and dizzy it was fun and we got to touch and play with everything and anything. By the way did you know that you can hear through your mouth? It is true we had to get a straw on a metal pole and put our fi ngers in our ears, and we could hear the music playing inside the glass tube. We all enjoyed the day and fi nished the day off with a look in the shop and then did a long journey back to school.
Year 5 funOn Friday we celebrated the queen’s 60th diamond jubilee in the morning we made fl ags and bunting and set the hall with decorations for the jubilee lunch. In the afternoon we watched the BFG since it relates to the queen and has her in it.
The week was so much fun!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It’s time to start designing your go-karts ready for Beckington’s inaugural go-kart rally on Sunday 23rd September 2012.The go-kart teams, made up of a driver and up to two runners, will navigate the obstacle course along the length of Sandy Lane, before turning left onto Warminster Road, up to the tennis courts and back down to the fi nish line – a route of 1km.

Oakfi eld Academy in Frome is on an eight strong shortlist for the Royal Forestry Society excellence in forestry schools awards.The accolade looks for inspirational projects that increase young people’s understanding and appreciation of the environmental, social and economic potential of trees, woodlands and forests, and or the link between trees and everyday wood products.There is a £1000 fi rst prize and a £500 second prize. Judges visited the schools in May.Oakfi eld has been short listed for two projects, one based around a plan to create areas of indigenous woodland in the school grounds and a mini forest, and the other to develop an orchard as part of the national Fruit Full Project.

12 sausages 2 slices white bread , whizzed into crumbs 2 tbsp chopped sage 500g pack puff pastry 3 tbsp caramelised onions fl our , for dusting 1 egg , lightly beaten 2 tsp sesame seeds
Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. Squeeze the meat from the sausages and mix with the crumbs and sage. Halve the pastry into 2 rectangular blocks. On a fl oured surface, roll each block lengthways only until you have 2 thin sheets, about 20 x 45-50cm.Thinly spread the onions in a strip over the pastry, leaving a 3cm border along one long-edge of each sheet. Divide the meat along the onions, shaping into a smooth roll, then brush just the border with beaten egg. Fold excess pastry over the meat and press to stick to the eggy border. Trim this edge, tuck under slightly to hold, then brush all over with egg. Scatter with seeds and slice each roll into 5. Bake on baking sheets for 35-40 mins until golden and cooked through. Once cool, freeze in bags. Defrost overnight in fridge.

Whatever your budget, don’t lose sight of the reason for the party - enjoyment all round. Ask the little Birthday Person what sort of party they would like (within reason!) and who they want to invite - get some advice from teachers and playgroup leaders if you don’t know all your child’s friends.
Spend your money and your time wisely. If money is tight, make the things you can yourself and only spend on the things you can’t. Even if you have a reasonable budget you don’t need to go over-board - it is better to do a few things very well than try and do too much and end up in a muddle!

Sleep deprived pupils are too tired to learn
zzzNew research has confi rmed what we have long suspected - that lack of sleep among primary school children is having a devastating effect, with nine out of 10 teachers complaining that pupils are too tired to learn.The poll, conducted as part of The Sleep Council’s “Better Brains With More Sleep” awareness project, which aims to teach children about the importance of a good night’s sleep, also reveals that more than half - 55% - of teachers agreed that the brightest children in the classroom are the best slept and most wide awake.And while many parents with young children worry about the effect that computers, gaming and mobile phones are having on their offspring, 88% of the 250 teachers questioned felt that distractions in the bedroom, such as games machines and TVs, are at the root of the problems, along with the fact parents are not strict enough about enforcing bedtimes.Jessica Alexander of The Sleep Council says: “As part of our project we wanted to establish just how much of an issue lack of sleep has become among young school children. Even we have been taken aback by the sheer scale of the problem.”The issue has now become so widespread that nearly a quarter of teachers admitted they’ve had had to resort to letting very tired children nap in a corner of the classroom.

Next time you visit the beach, comb the shores with your children to gather supplies for your own spectacular beach sculptures! Please note very strong glue is needed to make these sculptures, which, for safety, should only be handled by adults.You will need:Shells, pebbles, driftwood, or any interesting bits found along the beach Strong glue (we used a hot glue gun)Take a walk along the beach to collect some bits. Look what interesting shapes that you can fi nd. Bring the best of your collection home with you.Arrange your bits into the shape that you like. Older children, carefully supervised, can glue their creations together. Younger children should ask an adult to glue them together. Leave to dry.
Beach Sculptures
Choose a pretty design like our butterfl ies, or perhaps decorate with Chinese characters for something a little more dramatic! You will need:A piece of paper about 1m by 20cm, two wide ice lolly sticks, PVA (white) glue, sticky tape, colouring pens.Decorate your paper with the pens. We went for butterfl ies and fl owers but older children might like to try something more authentic like blossom or calligraphy.‘Pleat’ the paper into folds about 1 1/2cm wide.Glue a lolly stick onto each end of the paper. The lolly sticks should stick out about 2cm above the top of the paper.
Chinese Fan Craft
Here’s a fabric fl ower craft which will use up your scraps, provide practice to learn to sew, and create a really pretty display! These fl ower “yoyos” can be wired as we have done here, or you can glue the fl owers onto sticks and stand them in a pot, sew them onto headbands, hats, T-shirts or bags, or stitch a safety pin on the back to make pretty fl ower brooches, which make lovely little gifts. You will need:Fabric in 2 coordinating designs, buttons, thread, garden wire.Cut 2 paper circles about 4 and 6 inches in diameter. Pin each to one of the pieces of fabric and cut out. Alternatively draw around cups and saucers onto the fabric.Cut a piece of thread long enough to go all of the way around the edge of your biggest circle with some spare.
Fabric FlowerKnot one end and thread the other.Sew a loose running stitch around the outside of the largest circle, fi nishing with the thread to the right side of the fabric.Pull the thread so the fabric gathers. Secure the gap with a few stitches. Knot the fabric and tie off.Repeat with the smaller circle.When you have your two yo-yos, layer them up with a button over the top hole. Stitch the button in place going through both yoyos.Finish off by stitching a length of garden wire to the back, bending the ends into a loop so that they aren’t sharp and dangerous. You can now twist your fl ower onto a branch or pop it in a vase.

Throw a BYOB party. This is cheap, imagination-driven fun. You wield cutting implements and supply lots of tape. Guests are charged with one simple task: Bring. Your. Own. Box. Together kids can construct a fort or spaceship or whatever they please out of the boxes, then spend hours playing in it. There are plenty of other ways to amuse kids with cardboard boxes too.
Make sponge bombs out of cheap household sponges, then soak and use for tossing games. Unlike water balloons, these will last all summer
Take late-night walks. Kids enjoy this even more when they are in charge of the torches.
Encourage grubby fun. Designate an area of the garden where kids can play right in the dirt. They might want to use it to build mountains and valleys for their toy dinosaurs, cars, or action fi gures. They might want to add water to make mud pies. They might want to dig holes, perhaps looking for archaeological fi nds.
Throw a garden Olympics party. Create competitions like sack races, tumbling, Frisbee discus throws, and tossing bean bags into a bucket.
Go on a camera scavenger hunt. First choose a theme, like Ten Things That Move or A Dozen Signs of Summer. Then send kids out with cameras (disposable cameras) to grab some images. Encourage them to fi nd creative, funny, and unusual ways to interpret the theme. Pop the photos up on the computer screen or take disposable cameras to a one-hour processing shop.
Stage a treasure hunt. First, hide a prize. The prize doesn’t have to be a toy (it could be a cool drink or a packed lunch!). Next, hide clues. For non-readers the clues can be rebus pictures, digital photos, or magazine cut-outs. For readers try riddles, short rhymes, or question-based clues. Each one should lead the child to a spot where the next clue is hidden. If you have more than one child let everyone search for clues and fi gure them out together. Or stage treasure hunts for each child in turn using the collaborative efforts of those who are waiting. Once kids are familiar with treasure hunts they can easily set them up on their own.

The Summer holidays are nearly upon us and its good to get some dates in the diary for some exciting days out for the whole family to enjoy. According to the met offi ce July and August are set to be sunny and dry so its a great time to put those rain coats and wellies away and get out and about and enjoy the British Summer, whilst it lasts. The summer holidays gives us a chance to spend some quality family time together and take some time out from the hussle and bussle of the normally daily routine.
Living in the South West we are lucky enough to have some fantastic places to visit right on our doorstep from exhilarating horse riding and go-karting to chilled out days sightseeing, there’s so much to do in the local area that you don’t need to spend an arm and leg on fuel to get there. Also a recent study has indicated that there is strong evidence of a link between active school children and
academic performance, which is due to the increased blood fl ow to the brain, so not only will you be having fun but potentially creating a child genius by getting out and about and being active!!
A great activity for the whole family to enjoy is horse riding, what better way to spend the day than trekking across the beautiful English countryside with the children, plus its a great
fun way to burn off up to 300 calories. This could develop in to a hobby for all the family or you could have the next undiscovered Frankie Dettori amongst your brood. A visit to one of the many working farms in the area that are open to the public will give the whole family the opportunity to get up close and personal with the animals. Most working farms have lots of free space for the children to enjoy the outdoors with tractor rides and play areas and its a great place to take a picnic. Parents can sit back, relax and enjoy the sunshine whilst the children play. Most farms also cater for rainy days with undercover play areas and activities. When planning your trip you should visit the farms website as this may give you an idea of upcoming events that you may want to plan your day trip around.
Why not take the children to one of the many historic places in the local area, some children may not see the fun in visiting these places but why not make the visit more interesting for the kids by devising your own quiz sheet after a quick bit of research on the internet, it could be something that they can take back to school in September to WOW their new teacher with.

Combine this with building sand castles and collecting shells, not to mention, playing in the water and you’re sure to have a memorable day with the children wanting to come back for more.
NAUGHTS AND CROSSESDraw a grid in the sand; make it three squares by three squares.Person A uses Naught to mark their spotPerson B uses Crosses to mark their spotEach player takes it in turns until someone gets three in a row. It does not matter if it’s from side to side or up or down. You can take it in turns earning 1 point for every game you win, or simply make it the best of three.
SAND MEMORY GAMEYou need two people to play this game.Person A creates a grid in the sand, it’s up to you how big you make it, and we recommend perhaps four squares by four squares.Then person A, using shells has to create a random pattern by putting the shells in several squares.Person A should allow person B a minute to look at the grid pattern and then cover it with a beach towel. Person B then has to draw their own grid and see if they can remember the layout of person A’s grid.You can take it in turns earning 1 point for every time you get it right, or simply make it the best of three.
WATER BALLOON GAMERegardless of how many kids there are fi ll up a water balloon with water and play pass the balloon, picking people randomly to pass it to, however don’t pass throw it high and call out their name, then it’s up to them to catch it. When and if it’s dropped, just fi ll up another balloon and start again.
BEACH BOWLING GAMEThere are two different ways to play this game. You can either make 10 pins by fi lling up a cup with wet sand and then turn it upside down to make a pin (just like you would make a sand castle).Or if you prefer you can dig a hole for the pins, allowing the ball to roll into the holes.Either way you put one in the fi rst row, two in the second row and so on until you have ten pins.Draw a line in the sand and get each person to have two turns at rolling a ball toward the pins, re-creating the pins each time.The person who knocks over the most pins, wins, or alternatively the person gets the ball in the highest scoring hole wins (with each hole being worth a different amount).
BEACH OLYMPICSDepending on the number of kids you have with you at the beach, you could break them up into teams. Then create a list of events, with teams scoring points for each win. The winning team should have a prize.Some events you could have included:Three legged race – tie two kids together by the ankles, encouraging them to coordinate their movements to run. Whichever team makes it to the end fi rst wins.Long Jump – Draw a line in the sand. Have each kid run up to the line and jump. Whoever jumps the longest distance wins.Hurdles – Lay a number of items in the sand, twigs, spades, whatever you have handy. Get each child to hop the course, hoping over the items. The kid to do it in the fastest time wins.

There are plenty of amazing things at the pet shop which I take full advantage of! My highly nutritious dinner – Orijen – is a particular favourite of my owners as it’s very good for my health which you can tell by my fabulous coat condition. Tuffy toys are a particular favourite of mine because they are super tough and so many shapes and sizes to choose from. During the summer, I love to get brushed using the Furminator to rid me of my undercoat which gets everywhere, much to my owners’ displeasure. I’m also a fan of the shops new dog ‘ice cream’ from Billy + Margot which is surprisingly good for me! There are lots of fl avours to choose from but the strawberry and apple is my favourite.Come and take a look for yourself!

When it comes to choosing our child’s nursery or pre-school we all feel very pressurised to make the right decision. Nearly one million children are looked after in day nurseries in the UK and the number has consistently grown over the last 10 years, so you are not alone in making this decision.Start by obtaining a list of nurseries and pre-schools from your local Children’s Information Service and you can start researching! It’s very important to book a visit to the nursery or pre-schools you are considering as you will be able to meet the staff and see how happy the children are.
Some things you may wish to consider and check;• Most nurseries are open from 8am until 6pm but you
should enquire about provisions for earlier drop off and later pick up if required and what are the additional costs for this service, if any?
• Does your employer participate in a Child Care Voucher Scheme and does your chosen nursery accept the vouchers. This is a great way to save money.
• Is the nursery registered with OFSTED and ask to see the latest OFSTED report?
• If you work outside of your local area, would it be benefi cial to have the nursery close to home or close to work?
• Think of drop offs and pick up’s and how this fi ts with your daily routine
• Does the nursery provide all meals, if so what and where is it cooked?
• What is the daily routine? Including snack times, meal times, free play and activities.
• For babies, do you need to provide formula and nappies?• Where do babies sleep during the day and if your toddler
is still having a daytime nap where will they be able to sleep?
• Is there an outside play area so that children can spread their wings and enjoy the fresh air?
• Is the nursery entrance secure?• Is there a settling in period?• Will your child have a key worker?
Once you’ve found the nursery or pre-school you and your child are happy with you can start to relax and look forward to watching your child fl ourish and grow.
