    Fraudster jailed for ve years

A 41-year-old man from Pensby Road, Heswall has been jailed for ve years after

being convicted at Liverpool Crown Court of Fraudulent Trading.

The offences involved invoicing and demanding payment for advertisements that had

never actually been ordered by the victims and never appeared in any publications. It

was estimated that the offences netted the man just under 1 million for the 11 offences

committed between 2005 and 2010. A 45-year-old Liverpool man was also convicted

for his involvement in the crime.

    HGV concern

POLICE have acted to reduce the number of large HGV lorries using Barnston Road.

They have also advised Aldi about use of the route following complaints from residents.

Now is the winter of our discontent - William Shakespeare

Used a mobile at the wheel

A 23-year-old man from Heswall Mount has been

convicted of using a mobile phone while driving on

    points on his licence.

    Kids court nabs speedsters

PUPILS challenged speeding motorists outsideHeswall Primary School.

Drivers caught doing over 30 on Whiteld Lane were

given the choice of being ned and having points put

on their licence, or being challenged by the children

    about their behaviour.

Nine motorists were caught speeding, seven of

whom faced the kids court and reduced to tears

after being told of the potentially lethal consequences

    of their actions.

Acting headteacher Mrs Cathy Pepper said: We are

very proud of the way the children got involved in

this campaign. They acted professionally and were

extremely passionate about ensuring the roads are

safer for themselves and other children.

Chief Superintendent John Martin, Area Commander

for Wirral, said: We hope this impactive experience

of being told the consequences of their actions by

children will drive home the message that motorists

must reduce their speeds in a way that receiving a

ne cannot and that this in turn will make our roads

safer for both drivers and pedestrians.

In seed time learn, in harvest teach, in winter enjoy - William Blake

COMFORT EATING is a way of makingyourself feel better by way of food. Itis an emotional quick x that doesntwork. It is a conditional response something youve learned, an inap-propriate and inef-fective way of dealingwith your emotionswhich we all engage infrom time to time.

The early connections wemake as babies between foodand comfort are the seedsof comfort eating. As adults

when we feel emotionallyuncomfortable in some way

we may turn to food for comfort without actuallybeing aware of what we are doing weve devel-oped this strong emotional connection and neuralpathway in our brain that associates food with apositive change in our emotions but unfortunatelyin adult life food doesnt come with all those

wonderful things we experiencedas a child, it doesnt come withcomfort, attention, support, se-curity or love. But because thoseearly emotional links with foodremain so strong we still keep

doing the same thing, time aftertime in the false thought thatfood will make us feel better.

Recognise that continual andrepetitive comfort eating brings

    you pain rather than pleasure

    THREE volunteers from the

polio immunisation drive.Among the 50 volunteers are

    Vernon and Jennifer Schwarz

from the Rotary Club of West

    Wirral and Maria Martin from

    the Rotary Club of Neston.

    They ew out in November

    in preparation for the mass

    see 68 million children, under

the age of ve, protected injust a few days, saving them

from the curse of polio as part

of the End Polio Now campaign.

Maria said: Ive always loved fundraising

but I want to do more by supporting my

    fellow Rotarians and further understanding

the importance of the NIDs. I wanted

to see for myself just how serious the

situation is in India. Polio damages so

many lives and for those who survive, their life is one of agony, limited mobility

brings real hope and the trip brings home

the importance of the End Polio Now

    campaign.

    Thousands of vaccination stations will

be set up in cities across India, ready to

welcome families and their children. Once

immunised, a childs little nger is dyed

purple to keep track of who has alreadybeen given the protective medication, now

    known as the Purple Pinkie.

    Vernon added: Rotary volunteers give

their time freely to help because they care.

We are so close to getting rid of polio for

good. It is unnished business and we are

fully committed to eradicating the disease.

Remote locations are not barriers to

us. Volunteers get to the villages and

protect the children as part of our serviceto the communities. They also go to slum

areas where families live in unbelievable

    conditions. Dirty water runs through

open drains, children play in rubbish and

people make their homes out of waste. It

is almost impossible to accept that peoplelive in such horrendous conditions in this

    day and age.

Rotary clubs in Great Britain and Ireland

and the rest of the world work tirelessly

throughout the year, raising funds to pay

for the Rotary End Polio Now initiative.

    Thats an incredible achievement and

really shows Rotary to its full strength.

The winter owering jasmine, Jasminumnudiorum will ower throughout winter whenthe weather is mild with little yellow owers onarching stems. It is easy to propagate as stemsthat touch the ground will form roots so if you

know someone with an established plant youcan beg some stems to start your own shrub.I can be left to grow un-pruned, preferablyagainst a fence or kept trimmed to grow up awall.

Some winter owering heathers (Ericas) willstart to ower now so look out for plants ingarden centres to add colour around the base ofyour winter jasmine. Hebe red Edgeis a good winter evergreen low

shrub with the tips of thebuds turning a deep shadeof deep pink in the coldof winter. It will growto a low dome shapeabout 1m in diameterand 50cmtall.

Coloured bark on trees and shrubs is also very

attractive. If you have space for trees, the silverbirches such as Betula ermanii with creamyivory bark glow in the winter sun. Inter-plantwith coloured stemmed dogwoods such asCornus alba Elegantissima (red stems) orCornus sanguinea Midwinter Fire (orange to redstems) and under-plant these with snowdropsand crocuses for a stunning winter show. Thiscombination would look good in a wide borderlining a drive.

Buy in rst early seed potatoes if you wantto grow new potatoes for early harvesting.Set them in a cool frost free place in the lightto encourage shoots to start growing. Thisis known as chitting your potatoes. Keepnetting over any brassicas to protect them frompigeons. Pigeons can destroy a plant in a day!

Continue to dig over new beds or bordersleaving the soil in lumps to b e

broken down by frost into acrumbly tilth ready forplanting in spring. Put a

layer or garden compostor manure on the topto help improve the

    soil structure.

This month we take a look at the 1978 Spitre 1500which belongs to Ray and Bettine Fields, in our picture. These cars are very easy to work on and maintain, which is just as well because when

Ray acquired it in 1991 it had just been written off by the insurers. Its previous owner, having allowed his enthusiasm for driving it to get a bit out of hand, had made a majormodication to the front by allowing a tree to impede his progress.

Ray had just recently retired from a lifetime of working with ships around the worldand was looking for something new to occupy him, so when he heard about the damagedSpitre he snapped it up for the princely sum of 150. Ray then spent the next two yearson a full restoration which went much further than was necessary just to repair theaccident damage.

Ray and Bettine then became enthusiastic members of two Triumph car clubs, rst theyjoined the national Triumph Sports Six Club and for the last decade they have also been

keen members of the Wirral group Triumph Appreciation. For the former, Ray has been aregular contributor to their magazine and for the latter he is the much valued editor of ourregular newsletter. Rarely missing opportunities to join in events they love to go to shows, long runs, camping weekends and local outings to country pubs in the car. They evendrove to Le Mans on one occasion.

Such was the excellence of Rays restoration that the car won them several cups in theearly days and has never failed to get them back home in all the 40,000 miles they havecovered. The car is tted with the desirable overdrive (5th gear) and regularly returns38 - 40 mpg. Now both in their 80s, neither owners (nor car) are showing any signs yet ofloosing their enthusiasm for the fun and friendships their retirement hobby has provided.

    Fiction: House Rules- Jodie Picoult

When Emma Hunts teenage son is diagnosed with Aspergers she knows she will

do anything to help him. Jacob Hunt is brilliant at maths, has a wicked sense of

humour, is extraordinarily organized but hopeless at reading social cues. He is locked

in his own world aware of the world outside, and wanting to make a connection,

trying to be like everyone else without knowing how. His mother expects other people

not to understand, she expects stares and whispers, she even expects trouble with

the police. But when his tutor is found dead, all the hallmark behaviours of Jacobs

syndrome not looking someone in the eye, odd movements, inappropriate actions

start looking a lot like guilt to the police. And Jacobs mother must ask herself thehardest question in the world: is her child capable of murder?

Jodie Picoult fans will love this book with its usual mix of topical controversy and rare

insight into the workings of a family. Newly out in paperback, this is a great novel in

which to lose yourself over the long dark January evenings.

Travel Biography: Return to the Olive Farm- Carol Drinkwater

And if those dark winter evenings are getting you down, where better to spend them

than in the sunny South of France? After sixteen months of travelling round the

Mediterranean in search of the ancient secrets of the olive tree, Carol returns to her

husband Michel and his growing family. However, the homecoming celebrations are

overshadowed by disturbing discoveries. The plight of the honey bee has become

an international crisis and Carol is faced with unsettling news about the hives on her

own olive farm. While the multinational companies are pushing for bigger, better,

bumper crops, a small band of farmers and ecologists are calling for a halt to many

of the modern farming malpractices that are endangering the planet. Carol is amongst

them. But it puts her own farm, her idyll, under threat. This is the story of how Carol

and Michel struggle with some difcult choices, and how they decide to deal with the

unavoidable disappointments and inevitable responsibilities that come with running an

    organic farm.

Sixth in the Olive Farm series, a beautifully written, well researched, warm and

humane book that passionately confronts issues to do with farming in Provencetoday.
