Hesiod

HesiodLived around the 18th Century B.C

A poet who was though to have been a contemporary of Homer

He was the son of a poor Boeotian Farmer

Some of his major poems are "Work and Days" and " The Theogony"

Work and Days

Work and DaysIn the Works and Days, Hesiod describes himself as the heir of a farm bequeathed to him and his brother Perses. However, Perses apparently squandered his wealth and came back for what is owned by Hesiod. Perses went to law and bribed the lords to judge in his favour. The poem contains a sharp attack against unjust judges like those who decided in favour of Perses; they are depicted as pocketing bribes as they render their unfair verdicts. Hesiod seems to have thought that instead of giving him money or property which he will again spend in no time, it is better to teach him the virtues of work and to impart his wisdom which can be used to generate an income.

Work and DaysHe supports his argument with the story of the downfall of Prometheus, brought about by Pride. Then follows a descriptive agriculture labor on the barren soil of Hesiod's native land. Many writers have have been inspired by Work and Days, notably the Roman poet Vergil in his Georgics

TheogonyThe Theogony concerns the origins of the world and of the gods , beginning with Chaos, Gaia, Tartarus and Eros, and shows a special interest in genealogy. Embedded in Greek myth, there remain fragments of quite variant tales, hinting at the rich variety of myth that once existed, city by city; but Hesiod's retelling of the old stories became, according to Herodotus, the accepted version that linked all Hellenes.

TheogonyTheogony was considered as the earliest greek religious poem.

Giving genealogies of the gods and in account of the creation of the world and ensuing struggle in heaven between gods, from which Zeus emerges triumph. The creation myth in Hesiod has long been held to have Eastern influences, such as the Hittite Song of Kumarbi and the Babylonian Enuma Elis. This cultural crossover would have occurred in the eighth and ninth century Greek trading colonies such as Al Mina in North Syria.
