organized by Indian Hernia Society and Coimbatore Medical College.

Message from the President’s deskProf M.C. MisraConference President

The Department of Surgery, Coimbatore Medical College, Coimbatore is organizing

MID TERM CME CONFERENCE and Live Workshop focused on laparoscopic & open repair of inguinal

and ventral/incisional hernias in association with Indian Hernia Society on 17th & 18th July 2009

(HERNIACON 2009).

Groin hernia repair is one of the commonest general surgical procedures performeed by

general surgeons. Over 700,000 groin hernia repair are performed each year in USA alone. The exact

number in India is not know but according to conservative estimate more than 3,00,000 repairs are done

each year in India. Open hernia repair continues to dominate and associated with siginifcant morbidity if

not performed by properly trained surgeons. Open hernia repair is the first elective operation performed

by surgical trainees. To focus on surgical treatment of hernia; Shouldice Technique, Bloodgood,

Lichtenstein,PHS and laparoscopic (TEP & TAPP) repairs will be demonstrated.

Ventra/incisional hernia repair is the next common hernia performed by general surgeon.In

USA alone over 90,000 incisional hernia repair done each year. In india there are no definite data but more

than 1,50,000 repairs might be performed according to conservative estimates. Sutured repair is

associated with high recurrence rates (As high as 60%).Recurrence rates have significantly come down

with the prosthetic repair. Lately laparoscopic repair of ventral/incisional hernia repair has become the

standard of care due to ovewhelming advantages in terms of reduced postoperative complications and

recurrence. HERNIACON 2009 will focus on various aspects of laproscopic and conventional repair of

ventral/incisional hernia.

I welcome you all for active participation during the CME, Conference and live workshop on

various techniques for inguinal and ventral/incisional hernia repair. There will be free papers and panel

discussion covering aspects of hernia repair. I Congratulate the dynamic team lead by

Prof.A.Ramamurthy for the absorbing scientific program and live workshop and wonderful hospitality.
