I really believe my little boy will be found unharmed.” So said the devastated mother of an 8-year-old boy after he was swept out to sea on Friday, 10 October. The child had reportedly swum in a tidal pool, situated between Schul- phoek and the Beach Club in West- cliff, when the incoming tide pulled him off his feet and a rip-current swept him out to sea. Thembesa Fadina, a Zwelihle resi- dent, said she was at work on Friday, in Zwelihle, when her son’s best friend ran to her office, informing her hysterically that Iminatai is in troub- le. “My heart stopped for a minute, I couldn’t believe what he was telling me, and I ran as fast as I could to the tidal pool where Iminatai was last seen.” According to Henk Henn, NSRI Hermanus station commander, they were called out at 14:00 following reports of the missing child. “Our NSRI Hermanus volunteer sea rescue duty crew, Overberg Fire and Rescue Servi- ces, Law Enforcement, WC Government Health EMS and the SA Police Services re- sponded. “The Red Cross AMS Skymed rescue heli- copter was activated to assist in an extensive search in very rough sea conditions, but de- spite the extensive air, sea and shore search, the boy has still not been found. A police dive unit is continueing a search for Iminatai, but by the time of going to print on Wednesday, they have not sighted the child. The search will continue. Thembesa says Iminatai’s father died in 2006 in a car accident. She only has her 1-year- old daugther now, while hoping for a miracle finding Iminatai. With summer around the corner, the NSRI urges bathers and anglers to be cautious around the coast. Children should have responsible adult su- pervision around any water at all times. According to the NSRI, statistics released by the Medical Research Council show the great- est number of drowning accidents occur amongst children aged between 5 and 14 in swimming/tidal pools, riv- ers and dams. Rip-currents are the greatest cause of drowning accidents along the coast, according to the NSRI. A rip-current is a river of water flowing fast out to sea against the in- coming waves and can occur at dif- ferent places along the coastline reg- ularly throughout the day. Anyone caught in a rip-current will realise that they are being swept out to sea faster than they can swim towards the shore. If you are caught in a rip-current, do not panic and do not try to swim against the current. As hard and unnatural as this sounds, let the current take you out to sea, warns the NSRI. Tread water by moving your arms and legs in circular movements to stay afloat and keep your lungs filled with air to aid in your buoy- ancy. Raise one arm in the air and wave for help to alert people on the shore that you are in trouble. The rip-current force dissipates the further out to sea it gets, so at your first opportunity swim parallel to the shore front until you are free of the rip and then use the incoming waves to aid your progress to get back to shore. Mall expert says time is right fora shopping centreJANHENDRIK COETZER

As an introduction to “SupermarketWars”, whereby five managers from dif-ferent supermarkets will address U3Amembersovera five-weekperiod, startingon 28 October, supermarket and shoppingmallexpert,DougParker, spokeat themu-nicipal auditorium last week.Parker, who is a resident of Hermanus

andwho retired in 2011, is regarded as oneof the foremost experts on the study of thedevelopment and feasibility of shoppingmalls and tourist facilities.Since 1980, he has conducted feasibility

studies for most major shopping centresin South Africa as well as other shoppingmalls in 29 different countries.According toParker the time is right for

a shopping centre in greater Hermanus.“People spendmoremoney on food, gro-

ceries and clothing than on anything else.AlthoughHermanus is a relatively low in-

cometown,peoplestillwantthebestquali-ty and service at the right price.”Parker says that, asanexample,Herma-

nusneedsthethingsthatastore likeGamesells.“We need more furniture, appliances

and fashion.OurEdgars andWoolworths,to name a few, are too small. To have astore like Game would be a major draw-card. We will then also attract shoppersfrom places like Bredasdorp, Caledon andNapier.”According toParker there is also ahuge

lack of customer loyalty. “People shop ev-erywhere, not just at one store. If you forinstance put some of the stores in the in-dustrial areaunder one roof in a shoppingcentre, you increase the dwell timewhichalso increases shopping.”“Hermanus is a nice and modern little

town, people must realise that it’s not asmall fishing village anymore,” heconcluded.

Gansbaai sevismeelfabrieklaat ‘klankie’ indie lugELBÉ VAN HEERDEN

wingsbestuur: Luggehalte (Wet no.39van2004) sestandaardeenregula-sies voldoen.“Die fabriek het tans ’n tydelike

gereeld ondersoek by verskillendeplaaslike fabriekeomseker temaakdathulleaandieregulasiesvoldoen.“Ná ’n klagte ontvang is, reageer

The new mosque in Main Road has beenundergoing several upgrades and, accord-ing to a member of the congregation, should be completed in November thisyear.

Themosque, known as the Ismael EbrahimIslamicCentre, openeditsdoors twoyearsagoand has since undergone several upgrades.Themosque is located inMain Road, in the

building which previously housed the LivingWaters Church.Mahmood Malik, a local businessman and

member of the congregation, said they arecurrently using a section of the mosque forprayers while the building is in progress.“We started the upgrades about 10 months

ago and it should be completed in November.Buildinghasbeenhampered throughoutwin-ter because of bad weather.”The upgrades include the refurbishing of a

house on the premises for the Imam, a newparking area next to the church as well as aminaret and a new ablutions block.“We are currently using the piece of land

across the road from the mosque for parkingwhile the building is in progress, butwe don’twanttodisturbtraffic, sothis landwillbeusedas overflow parking when the project is com-pleted.”According to Stephen Muller, the director

of infrastructure and planning at the Over-

strand Municipality, all the plans for themosque are in place.“The mosque is located on an erf zoned for

community Zone 1, with a primary right ofa place of publicworship. The first church (onthe premises) was the Afrikaans PentecostalChurch during the late 1980s and later TheLiving Water Church.“The mosque’s building plans comply with

the zoning scheme regulations in terms ofparking requirements. The parking on site ismore than is required by the scheme regula-tions.“The extension of the existing building is

to accommodate the ablution area for bothwomenandmenandanewwheelchair-friend-

ly bathroom as well as internalamendments.“A minaret is part of the approved build-

ing plan and all issues relating to themosque, including wheelchair access, park-ing and ramps, were addressed during thebuilding plan process.”The mosque will not be making use of a

speaker system for calls to prayer andshould therefore not cause disturbance tothe surrounding residential area.A neighbouring guest house owner, John

Terras from Aloe Guesthouse, is howevergetting worried about the delays in the con-struction process.“They have been building for a long time

now. As far as my knowledge goes, it was sup-posed to be completed already. Another prob-lemwe are experiencing is the constant traffic, with some vehicles parking right in our drive-way.“They start grinding at 08:00 in the morning

right when our guests are having breakfast. The dust has become so bad that we haven’tbeen able to use our washing line.“We really have no problem with the place-

ment of themosque, and their activities shouldnot be more intrusive than any other church, but shouldn’t there be a time period to finisha building project?”Municipal building inspector, Jonty Abra-

hams, says there is no time limit when a build-ing project is under way.“The law determines that building must be

started within a year after the plans have beenapproved. Thus the construction based on aplanthatwasapprovedon10October2014,mustbe started by 10 October 2015.“If not, the plans will lapse. As long as the

building is under way, the owner is within thelaw.”

The mosque in Main Road is currently under construction and should be completed in November. PHOTO: ELBÉ VAN HEERDEN

Cyclists andmotorists alikemust abide by the law“I look at the road through the eyes ofa cyclist, although I used to drive mycar like any other motorist and used towant to crucify cyclists, but since thenI have adjusted my opinion a lot.”These are the words of cycling enthu-

siast and coordinator of the HermanusCyclist Club, Jacqui Jackson, followinglast week’s article (“Boere raadop met‘onverantwoordelike fietsryers”, HT, 9October) regarding cyclists who do notkeep to the rules of the road. Shechanged her view when she started cy-cling in December 2012.“I admit that some cyclists do contra-

vene the law, but it has to be asked: Didthe motorist take the photograph, tak-ing his hands off his steering wheel, which is also in contravention of thelaw? There are manymotorists, includ-ing a taxi earlier this week (full oflearners), talking on his cellphone andputting their lives at risk and thosemo-torists driving with their dogs on theirlaps, which do not keep to the trafficlaws. There are many examples that Ican mention where motorists put otherroad users at risk.“Earlier thisweekwewere cyclingon

the Karwyderskraal Road andwhile wewere wearing bright yellow cyclinggear and kept to the laws of the road,we had to pull off at one stage to waitfor the passing bakkies, who have nomercy for other road users. Like thedriver of the bakkie on Sunday at theFisherhaven bend who ignored the 1 mrule and nearly knocked us into aditch.”According to the Safety of Cyclists

Regulation (Government Gazette, 20 No-vember 2013) motorists have to take

care while passing a cyclist, leave a dis-tance of at least one metre between themotor vehicle and cyclist andmaintainthat distance from the cyclist until safe-ly clear. It is however, the duty of cyclists to

keep as close as possible to the left edgeof the roadway and obey road trafficsigns and rules implemented accordingto national regulations.Cyclists must also fit and use front

and rear lights when riding in the darkor conditions with limited visibility. The regulation further states that cy-

clists may not ride on the right-handsideofamotorvehicleproceeding in thesame direction, unless when passingthat vehicle or turning right at an inter-section. “A person may not ride a cycleon a roadway abreast of another cyclistproceeding in the same direction, ex-cept when passing that cyclist.”The law further states that cyclists

may not ride while wearing a headset, headphones or any listening device(other than a hearing aid) or carry an-other person on the cycle, unless the cy-cle is specifically equipped to carrymore than one person.“Anypersonwhocontravenes or fails

to comply with any provision of theseregulations commits an offence, and onconviction is liable toa fineor to impris-onment of a period not exceeding oneyear.”Jacksonsays it is easy topoint fingers

atcyclists, whoaremostly theminority, but if all road users, motorists, cyclistsor pedestrians (including runners)abide by the law, the road will be muchsafer for everyone. “The road isn’t onlyfor motorists,” she adds.

Wanneer jy see toe gaan, is konstante

What is catching ourchickens? After our chickens were caught by an un-known type of cat, we have had some callsfrom readers with various suggestions andpossibilities. We reinforced the chicken runwith cement

blocks around to keep our beautiful whiterooster and his three hens safe, but alas, lastThursday this whatever dug underneath theblocks and took the rooster out, leaving onlyhis two feet as a memento for us.We dug deep trenches and filled it with ce-

ment tomake it catproof. Last night we hearda commotion again, but were too late to seewhat it was.My neighbour, however, saw a Cape Otter

running away. Is this possible? In this week’sHermanus Times (09/10/2014) “Be aware ofCape Clawless Otters” you had an article onthe Cape clawless otter. If he is clawless, howcan he dig a hole under the fence and if hedoes catch chickens, will it be a good idea toput a sign to allow him to cross the road, thesame as a sign for the chickens? It is all veryconfusing.Mywife is sure she sawamongoose the oth-

er evening. Can it kill chickens?Does any oneof your readers have some explanation for allthis, and also perhaps a nice large rooster forus and also maybe a dog that is used to a lifewith chickens and two white rabbits?

All we ask is consideration from motoristsMy letter is not to shoot down your article(HT09/10) - thecyclist in thephoto isclear-lywell into the path ofmotorists, but rath-er to put our side across. Many people do not realise the effect

passing motorists, trucks in particular, have on the cyclist.Whenavehiclepassesacyclist at speeds

in excess of 70 km/h,much less for trucks, the cyclist gets pulled into the road by thevacuum of the passing vehicles’ slip-stream, evenmore sowhen thereare crosswinds.Hence the 1 metre passing law, but

manymotorists fail to observe this, eitherthrough ignorance, a “don’t-care-get-out-of-my-way” attitude or, as is clear in thephoto, throughlackofspaceonournarrowcountry roads. Many roads have no shoulder and/or

yellow line for the cyclist to ride in androad cyclists cannot ride off the tar withtheir skinny tyres. Many areas of road donotevenhaverideable spacealongside thetar for even the off-road mountain bikerto rideon.Hencemanycyclistsdoridesin-gle file, teetering on the edge of the tar, where being a smaller target they are lessvisible from behind. Some riders feel a sense of protective-

ness towards, especially female, partnersand will purposely elect to ride next totheir partner on the road side, thereby in-creasingthevisiblesizeof thegrouptomo-torists approaching from the rear.I personally have had occasions where

motorists have not given enough spaceeven on a wide open road with no oncom-ing traffic, so that I have had to “dive” forthe bushes with my bike! The road between Hermanus and Gans-

baai has zero shoulder or yellow line forcyclists or pedestrians. The road betweenStanford and Riviersonderend has a yel-low line painted right on the edge of thenarrow tar with zero shoulder. The Hemel en Aarde Road has barely a

hand’s breadth of a shoulder.Cyclingisoneof, ifnotTHEfastestgrow-

ing sport in the country, but our roadswere not designed with the future cyclistin mind. All we ask is safe access to theroads and consideration from motorists. Please slow down and give us as wide aberth as possible. There are, and will al-waysbe, thosewhodonot care, cyclist andmotorist alike, but please bear in mindwe are not all hooligans, just as you arenot all dangerous drivers.

tog so ’n klein bietjie geduldig te wees.

ABERDEEN STREET WALK: On 6 October twentyodd keen history enthusiasts braved the rain and cold to discover the legacy ofAberdeen Street in the Hermanus CBD, researched and presented by Angela Heslop with the assistance of Corrie Smit. The walkingtour covered the social events of the time, the houses and their occupants situated on both sides of Aberdeen Street from the offices ofthe Hermanus Times to its junction with Mitchell Street. There was a collection of photos of personalities as well as artefacts of a bygone era, including penny sweets, bars of soap wrapped in newspaper and an enamel container with which residents could fetch their“take away” suppers at local boarding houses, which created a feel of the past. Many participants on the walk whose parents orgrandparents had lived on the street, also shared stories and memories of living in or visiting the street. PHOTO: ELSABE BRINK

Chicken crossing to help stop fowl carnageSo, you thought the chicken crossingin Onrus would never happen.

Well, it has. You probably think azebra crossing for chickens is too farout a concept, but let me explain.

Our locals are all nice people andhave always waited patiently for thechickenstocrosstheroad,butthevis-

itors - the aliens - who rush into Her-manus in such a great hurry to expe-rience our tranquillity and all the de-licious extras of the Overberg, theystop for nothing. Not for hens andchickens scurrying across the road, not even for the cock who struts hisstuffathisownpace.Azebracrossing

may just give visiting motoristspause to think for a moment and savethe life, (even if only temporarily) ofsome hapless chicken whose ulti-mate fate is to end up plucked, stuffedand on someone’s dinner plate.

Camphill school principalcalls it a dayCamphill School Hermanus recent-ly announced that Dr Matthi Ther-on has resigned from his position asprincipal at the school.

Theron told the Camphill schoolboard that his decision was influ-enced by a number of factors, in-cluding his age, health and the dailycommute from Betty’s Bay to Her-manus.

According to Geoffrey Weir, chairman of the Camp-hill SchoolBoard, Theron made a substantialcontribution during his time asprincipal. “On behalf of the boardand the entire school, I want to ex-press our most sincere gratitudeand thanks, in particular those ear-ly days back in 2011 when the schoolfaced much uncertainty and manydifficult challenges.”

Pending the appointment of a new

principal, vice-principal Jeanne-Marie Botha will act in this capaci-ty, supported by the school manage-ment team and the board of direct-ors.

“We all hold Camphill Schoolclose to our hearts and know thatit will continue to flourish and beof enduring benefit tot the specialchildren in our care,” says Weir.

Learners enjoy sandboardingUpper Schoollearners atCamphillSchool Her-manus re-cently partic-ipated in anunusual andchallengingouting, thanks to thegenerosity ofSA ForestAdventuresHermanus, which hadarranged totake them sand boarding on thesteep sand dunes of Betty’s Bay.

Under supervision, the learnersand co-workers each had severalturns to slide down the lovely whitesand dunes on a very large sand-board, which looked a bit like asnowboard.

The girls in theclass surprised ev-eryone with theirfearlessness, stam-ina and spirit of ad-venture as theythrew themselveswholeheartedly in-to this challengingnew activity.

Afterwards, ev-eryone went for awell-deserved pic-nic lunch of hot-dogs and cool-drinks at Klein-mond lagoon.

They were very happy to havelearnt a new skill, as well as havinghad a fun-filled day of good weather, beautiful nature and fresh air.

Camphill School would like tothank SA Forest Adventures Her-manus for this exciting opportuni-ty.

“Kyk by die ven-ster uit man,” is sy raad.

Although cooler temperatures can be expected after nightfall, the colder weather has, for now, made way for summer. Warmtemperatures of up to 22 °C can be expected this weekend, withSunday only partly cloudy.

SakegidsBusiness Guide

Finmonitor:ABIL abridge too farAfrican Bank Limited (ABIL) was placedinto curatorship on 10 August 2014.

Since then the curator has taken controlof all aspects of what used to be African Bank.

This drastic intervention by the Ministerof Finance was prompted by ABIL’s tradingupdate of August 6, 2014 which left no optionbut to conclude that despite repeated efforts, which also involved the SA Reserve Bank, Af-rican Bank was failing on all parameters be-lieved to constitute a viable bank.

The grave and deteriorating situationevolved despite the Registrar of Banks’ ongo-ing engagement with management and theboardofdirectorssincelate2012toeffectivelyimplement measures to address concernsheld by the Banking Supervision Depart-ment. The sharp price decline of the listedshares in preceding weeks had already sig-nalled a loss of confidence that the ongoingcorrective steps were achieving the desiredresult.

The curatorship, in effect, boils down to thefollowing:

) African Bank will continue to grantloans, take deposits and do collections of out-standing loans.

) Retaildepositors,representingabout1%of the bank’s creditors, will have full accessto their money at the agreed deposit rates andterms in the ordinary course of business.

) African Bank will be split in two parts:a “good” bank with a book value of aboutR26 billion and “bad loans” of about R17 bil-lion, which will no longer form part of Afri-can Bank.

) The “good” bank’s newly establishedholding company is expected to be listed onthe JSE, probably in the first quarter of 2015.It will be recapitalised to the tune of R10 bil-lion, underwritten by the major SA bankinggroups and the Government Employees Pen-sion Fund. Existing shareholders will be giv-en an opportunity to participate on terms un-

known as yet.) Wholesale depositors (e.g. money mar-

ket and income funds) were given the optionof 90% of capital and accrued interest beingtransferred to the “good” bank, which meanta 10% write-off of accumulated book value.

) Until further notice, the payments of in-terest and withdrawal of capital on these de-posits will remain suspended.

) Collection against the “bad” loan bookwill be strengthened.

) In effect, investors in unit trusts havinginvested in ABIL debt, will have two typesof investments: units in the “good” bank at90 % of book value preceding curatorship, and units in the “bad” book. It is anticipatedthat maturities on investments in the “good”bank will be extended by up to 24 additionalmonths. At this point there is no clarity asto the outcome of investments in the “bad”book.

The impact of these actions on the privateinvestor has been and will be negative.

Investors in listed shares of ABIL have suf-fered capital losses, will not be receiving divi-dends for many years even if they do partici-pate in the recapitalisation of the “good”bank, and are locked in as long as the sharesare suspended from trading on the JSE, irre-spectiveofwhethertheyareinvesteddirectlyor via unit trusts. These investors have totake it on the chin as dark clouds have beengathering over ABIL for long which has re-ceived much publicity. This highlights theadditional risk that equity investors take onin search of higher returns.

A more contentious issue is the “loss-es” suffered by investors in unit trusts– in particular money market or incomefunds—which had investments in ABIL’sdebtinstruments. Investorswhoinsistonbeing invested “risk free” should realisethat bank deposits and government retailbonds are the place to be. However, evenbanks fail, which is highly unlikely but

not impossible, as the Saambou saga remind-ed us some years ago. Money market fundsare generally regarded as “risk free”, and vir-tually without exception they are, but inABIL’s case they proved not to be; even thebest investment managers are not infallible. The same can be said about income funds.Fact of the matter is investors need to do theirhomework thoroughly before committinghard-earned savings to any investment.

If one is not competent to do one’s own as-sessment of investment risks, consult an ex-pert. If, indeed, one has consulted and feelsthat having had to sacrifice 10% of your af-fected unit trust investment is inappropriateas a result of an incorrect fund selection, youshould engage with your adviser.

One of the most tried and tested contractlaw principles is caveat emptor – “let the buy-er beware”. Always assume that the “buy-er”—in this case you, the “investor”—hasless information than what you ideally wouldwish to have. Hence, go the extra mile to gar-ner all available information to back up yourinvestment decision. Having done that, thereis no option but to live with the outcome ofone’s decision.

Visitors toWhale Festival: figures and feedbackJANHENDRIK COETZER

Less people visited the Two Oceans WhaleFestival this year, albeit by a small margin.

Between 3 and 6 October 100 820 people vi-sitedthefestivalandatotalof23 677carswerecounted. Last year there were 112 782 visitorsand 28 804 cars.

According to the visitors survey, done byvarsity students on behalf of the festival com-mittee, local visitors from the Overstrandmade up 24% of this figure, Cape Town 38%,elsewhere in the Western Cape 14%, else-where in South Africa 12% and overseas 12%.

“The trend line clearly shows that therewere more local visitors than national visi-

tors,” said festival organiser, Leon Theron.“This can only be attributed to the currenteconomic downturn, where people avoid ex-cessive travel costs. However, the volume ofinternational visitors is quite surprising.”The average visitor experiences were

rated as follows:. Organisation – 84,3%. Safety and security – 89%. Quality of event – 85,3%. Atmosphere – 93,5%. Entertainment – 84,8%. Quality of music – 83,3%Some of the comments received:. More food stalls (needed).. It’s much safer.

. Nothing much interesting, look for localmusicians next time.

. We are overwhelmed by the live bands.

. More activities for children (needed).

. More entertainment until Monday.

. Try to clean your toilets.

. More toilets, more stalls and parking aproblem.

. Fantastic, keep it up.Theronsaystheir focusis toattractvisitors

to the Overstrand region. “Based on a con-servative estimate, at least R30 million wasspent during the festival. This takes into ac-count what was spent at local shops, accom-modation establishments, in the festival areaand at restaurants.”

Comments and feedback forGrotto Beach upgradeELBÉ VAN HEERDEN

The comment period for the amended BasicAssessment Report (BAR) for the develop-ment at Grotto Beach and Piet-se-Bos hasclosed.

According to the Overstrand Municipali-ty theyhavereceivedapproximately30com-ments from interested and affected partiesin the area.

The original proposal included the con-struction of an amphitheatre at GrottoBeach, which was strongly opposed duringa public meeting held on 18 January 2014.An amended BAR has since been released, and although the amphitheatre was notedto be the least preferred alternative, two ofthe three options still included this as an op-tion.

The third option, which would also be thecheapest of the three, included the reinstate-ment of the ecotone between the old wetlandand the milkwood forest, provision for araised boardwalk for access into the forest, which would contribute to an increase in bio-diversity. This option also included the re-ductionfromadoublestoreytoasinglestoreybuilding where the old Nautilus restaurantused to be.

According to Bob Stanway, from the Her-manus Ratepayers Association, they are incomplete support of the rehabilitation of the

wetlands surrounding Grotto Beach, but notin favour of the development of a restauranton the old Nautilus site. “The main reasonfor opposition is that developing restaurants, whatever the business model, is not the corebusiness of the municipality.”

Niel Hoogenhout, the chairman for theGrotto Beach Action Group (GAG) said thatthey have also responded to the amendedBAR.

They had appointed a lawyer to representthe group in the light of the proposed amphi-theatre. “We find it strange that two of thethree development alternatives referred to in

the amended draft basic assessmentreport,dated30July2014,still revolvearound an amphitheatre.

” They have asked that the munici-pality confirms that an amphitheatrewill not form a part of the develop-ment.”

Each of the GAG members respond-ed to the proposal of the restaurantseparately. Hoogenhout responded:“Regarding the amended plans for arestaurant at the old Nautilus site, Iagree with other respondents that itis unacceptable to use the loophole oftheoldsite torebuildwithinthe100 mhigh water mark.

“Hopefully construction will nothappen due to the fact that the budget

in the BAR is totally inadequate. There is noway that the rehabilitation of the wetlandsandthebuildingof therestaurantcanbedonewith a mere R700 000.”

According to Stephen Müller, the directorof Infrastructure and Planning at the Over-strandMunicipality, thenextstepintheproc-ess is that the item be drafted and submittedto council.

“OnceCouncilhasresponded, theresponsewill be submitted to the Department of Envi-ronmental Affairs and Development Plan-ning with all the relevant documentation as-sociated with the BAR application.”

Learners visit greenest hotelThe grade 10 to 12 learners at NorthcliffHouse College visited Africa’s first greenesthotel,HotelVerde,atCapeTownInternation-al Airport on Wednesday 1 October.

“One reads so much about sustainabilityand the environment, yet to see a businessin operation like Hotel Verde, truly inspiredall the learners,” said Vivian Mitchley, prin-cipal of Northcliff House College.

“Our school has been part of Eco schoolsand to see art and eco-studies so well amalga-mated showed us what can be achieved withvision and passion.”

Design, Tourism and Business learners

were shown how the hotel is constructed andhow it operates.

LED lighting, sustainable hydroponic veg-etable gardens, heat source from a geo-ther-mal field, a grey water plant, and solar panelsare some of the hotel’s main eco features.

All the art on display in the hotel has beendone by learners in the area.

Food is also sourced locally. One of the green aspects the learners found

to be quite novel is that Hotel Verde’s visitorsare encouraged to use equipment (cycle-power) in the gym to help generate electrici-ty.

FFSAArtproject inGansbaaiELBÉ VAN HEERDEN

Gansbaai does not offer many op-portunities for entertaining theyouth, which is the motivationbehind an art project by the Foot-ball Foundation of South Africa(FFSA), held during the schoolholidays.

Joe Strider, an intern with theFFSA, worked together with re-nowned artist and photographer,Jared Aufrichtig, to bring the crea-tiveworkshopandartmuralprojectto Gansbaai.Strider, who studied at NYU was

referred to Jared through a mutualfriend in New York.Jared, who had recently returned

from a similar project in Peru, sug-gested they do the same for the chil-dren of Gansbaai and collaboratedto create the workshop.“Joe invitedmehere to come take

pictures of their local projects, butas I had just completed the muralproject in Peru, I suggested we dothe same here.”They started a campaign to raise

funds for the project, collecting$1 400 (about R15 500) to be used forpaint and other supplies. The children participated in vari-

ous creative workshops, with thecreation of a wall mural at the NewLife Church inBlompark as their fi-nal project.

Jared shared his extensive artis-tic knowledge to introduce the chil-dren to some of the fundamentalconcepts and practices of art andcreativity, such as mixing colours, proper brush strokes and texture.“Theideawastocreatesomething

of value for the children, not onlyto educate them on the fundamen-tals of art, but to provide a meansfor creative expression and to en-gage the children in a new and funactivity,” said Strider.“We want to inspire children to

further pursue art as a hobby, crea-tive outlet or possible career path.Once theproject is complete, the fin-ished mural will not only serve asa beautiful addition to the town ofGansbaai, but will also exist as a

lasting source of pride for the chil-drenwhoworkedonitandaremind-er of what can be accomplished byworking together.”

SMALL CAR: BIG FUN

HyundaiGrand i10Fluid: thebig funHANJO STIER

Today, the Hyundai Grand i10 andI would like to teach you a lesson.

Don’t worry; it’s not the hurtingkind, rather the opposite – small carscan be fun. The harsh reality is thatpracticality and price rule when yourbudget is tighter than two coats ofpaint but you shouldn’t settle forsomething cheap ’n nasty.

Sure, ifwealldrovewhatwedesiredthe roads would be jammed with over-heating Ferraris, pink Minis and up-turnedmonster trucks.Youcouldalsobravetheusedcarmarket foranolder, bigger, more powerful machine, butits longevity and maintenance mayjust give you nightmares.

Perhapsyou’reafteranewcarthat’snot too big, bland or bank-breaking.Starting at R139 900 means the newHyundai Grand i10 positions itself inone of the most hotly-contested seg-ments of our car market between ul-tra-compact hatchbacks (think i10,Spark) and regurgitated oldies (Vivo,Figo).

There’s nothing terribly wrongwith any of these, yet the new Grandi10appealsonother levels too.Yes, it’sstill a small city car, but its dimen-sions are more generous than babybrother i10. At the same time, it’sR26 000 cheaper than an i20, whichsounds vaguely familiar. Yip, you’relooking at the replacement of Hyun-dai’s beloved Getz.

Two of my near and dear ones areproud Getz owners. So proud in factthatoneexamplewas lovinglyhanded

down to a younger family member in-steadofbeingtradedinwhiletheotherowner replies to suggestions of a newcar by hissing and frowning vigorous-ly. Why? Because the Getz was a greatlittle car.

Nothing special, nor overly excit-ing. Itwaseasy todrive, veryversatileand economical with an inoffensiveshape and friendly face. And before Iget tethered in more elusive explana-tionsofpriceorappeal, I’d like to statethat the new Hyundai Grand i10 doesits ancestor proud. It’s just as good.

Next to an i10, the Grand boasts anadditional 18 cm length, 65 mm width,45 mm wheel base, 18 mm groundclearance and 31F boot space. At 256 F,the cargo area is smaller than that ofaGetzbut themaximumloadof1 200 Fis superior to the old Hyundai or i10.Passenger space has also increased.

Its interior consists of decent plas-tics and understated fabric patternswith a few silver highlights and bluedisplays to liven things up a bit. It’sa pleasant place to be with simple con-trols and a fuss-free layout. Any Getzownerwouldapprove–ifyoucouldgetthem to calm down, stop hissing andenter a Grand i10.

Hyundai South Africa sells this carwith two trim levels and a choice of5-speed manual or 4-speed automaticgearbox.Allmodelshavealloywheels,air-con,central locking,CDradiowithUSB and Aux inputs, Bluetooth, childlock,ABSbrakeswithEBD,frontpow-er windows and power steering.

I found the steering slightly vagueand rather insistent on returning tothe centre position, but that’s the only

critique I could come up with on ourhigher-spec Fluid test car. Included inthis model are remote access, onetouchtriple-turnindicators, rearpow-er windows and power exterior mir-rors.

TheGrand i10 is onlyavailablewithone engine, a 1 248 cc four-cylinderpetrol worth 66 kW (90hp) or 120 Nm.Forgive me if I was expecting to hangout with motorised chairs and refrig-erated lorries all week, but evenagainst a kerb weight of 1 051 kg, thatdoesn’t sound very encouraging.

How wrong I was. This 1.25L engineisaveryhappy littlemill, eagerlypull-ing forward in traffic and even donat-ing a sprinkling of fun when annoyed. We measured 0–100 km/h in about 11seconds. The absence of traction orstability control means screechingstarts and under-steer are also possi-ble.

TheGrandi10possessesagoodchas-sisandhighprofiletyressetupforridecomfort, while pedal feel is equallyamicable. This little Hyundai is alsoquite frugal, alleging 5.9 F/100km av-erage fuel use from its 43 F tank. Oursfloatedaroundsevenwithmixeddriv-ing, indicated by the multi-mode tripcomputer.

Hyundai includes its5-year/150 000 km warranty and road-side assistance with each Grand i10.AtR149 900 forthisFluidManualmod-el, you’ll find smaller or cheaper alter-natives elsewhere, but I felt that thisis a good little car which is also funto drive. Sounds familiar, doesn’t it?Long live the new Getz!

Audi S3sedan: the focusedappealHANJO STIER

Did you know that Audi makesmore than 30 different cars?Quite a few of them are bigger ortopless versions of existing mod-elsbut ifyou’re inthemarket for, say, a four-door sedan, you canpickbetweensixbasic configura-tions, excluding sporty itera-tions like the S3 sedan I testedlast week.

So just to clarify: Audi makes atwo or four-door hatchback equiva-lent of the Volkswagen Golf; calledA3. The performance version is anS3 and the lunatic special, an RS3(currently not available). To offerevenmore choice to discerning cus-tomers, they slapped a boot on theA3 / S3 range and made this sedan.

Yes, yes, I know what you’rethinking.AGolfwith a boot alreadyexists so this is essentially an AudiJetta. And before anyone points outthesupersellerAudiA4, Icanvouchfor the fact that the A3 / S3 sedanis more compact and has its owncharacter, appeal and design.

The front is almost indistinguish-able from any other modern Audiwhile the dashboard is straight outof the A3 hatchback. In my humbleopinion, it’s the rear end of the carwhere things get interesting – theboot doesn’t seem slapped on at allandthecar’s linesare justexquisite.Clean, taut, muscular and discreet.

This is just my observation butthe S3with its understated go-fasterbits just lookssomuchmorefocusedandwell-proportioned than some ofits curvy competitors. Bespoke tothis model are deeper bumpers,

skirts, a thin boot spoiler, shinytrim and mirror covers, 18-inchwheels, mean lights and four ex-haust pipes.

Its seemingly bullet-proof interi-or spoils you with sports seats andsteering wheel (with shift paddles),climate control, more shiny bits,start/stop system, MMI radio withBluetooth, rain sensor, Audi DriveSelect, progressive steering, XenonPlus headlights, Isofix anchors and

lots of airbags; to name just a few.Our silver test car featured a few

optional extras like navigation, parkingaids, leathertrimandapan-oramic sunroof. Everyone loved thebig glass ceiling but I have to cau-tion tall folks that thiswill encroachinto the already-snug dimensionsand compromise headroom. Bootsize is a decent 390 F while the fueltank holds 55 F.

As you would expect, spending

time in this high-quality cabin is anabsolute pleasure which is height-ened by the pin-sharp displays, topergonomics and intelligent info-tainment system. The navigationwon’t just offer to find a filling sta-tion if your fuel level hits reserve,it will also warn of low battery sta-tus in Bluetooth’d mobile phones.

Even more amazing is the S3 se-dan’s power train – a 2-litre TFSifour cylinder turbo-petrol engine

(210 kW, 380 Nm) linked to a 7-speeddual-clutch (DSG) automatic gear-box. Low-speed response can besluggish, but this is easily remediedby selecting Sport mode or simplyincreasing the angle of your rightfoot.

The motor is reasonably quiet atidle and at constant cruising speedsbut gives off a lovely deep enginegrowl and boomy exhaust noises(with up-shift pops) when angered. It gets even more vocal when youemploy launch control to hit100 km/h in five seconds (our GPSbeat that by 0,2 seconds); top speedis limited to 250 km/h.

Sothen, performancefanswillnotbe disappointed and they alsowon’tmind the S3 sedan’s very firm ride.It doesn’t crash or rattle over une-ven surfaces but I have to tell youthat its damping is hard. Needlessto say, that goes hand-in-hand withexceptional grip and phenomenal,Quattro-supported, handling.

The flat-bottomed steering wheelisusuallyquite lightinitsresponsesbut hardens up in Sport mode to of-fer meatier feedback. And beforeyou think this car is a gas guzzler,Audi claims average consumptionof 7 F/100 km. I did see my averagedrop below eight with careful driv-ing but a realistic average is10 F/100 km.

To sum up, the Audi S3 sedan isa great-looking, well-equipped,slightlyhardandcompact familyse-dan which corners like a house flyand goes like the clappers. The priv-ilege of ownership will set you backR529 500 which also includes a5-year/100 000 km Audi Freewayplan. Galimoto Media

ZurichHermanusdemolishPaarlThe new cricket season isupon us, but this year theHermanus Cricket Clubhas a brand-new and excit-ing look.

The international compa-ny Zurich Insurance is themain sponsor of the Herma-nus Cricket Club, with athree-year deal being signedin the off-season, and alreadyit is bearing fruit. There are quite a few new

faces at the club and the FirstX1 have taken on a more in-vigorated appearance, with areally good squad to choosefrom. The first match against

Steinhoff Maties showed thatthe lads were still a little “un-der-cooked” after the winterand a fewvaluable pointswere lost. Howev-er, theZurichHermanusFirstX1camebacklast weekendwith a resounding demolitionof the much fancied Paarl side.Skipper Derek Brand won the toss and

chose to bowl first on a livelywicket. Satur-day’s middle practice paid off and all of thebowlers hit their straps from the off.Willem du Toit and Tashwin Lukas

shared thenewballandmade lifemore thana little unpleasant for the Paarl openers.Having said that, they did manage to puton 42 runs before Du Toit struck the firstblow for Hermanus.Itwasprettymuchaprocessionafterthat,

with both JC Hagen and Lee Thomasonpickingup threewickets.Hagenwaspartic-ularly impressive and his line and length,

combined with decent pace, had Paarl at sixes and sevens. After 36 overs Paarl suc-cumbed, with a mere 101 onthe board. The Hermanusfielding, although not excep-tional,wassharpandthisbod-es well for the rest of the sea-son.The Hermanus “brains

trust” has set out its stall forthe season and the key phraseis “brave cricket”, with eachplayer understanding theirrole.Hermanus opened with

skipper Brand and new-boyLee Thomason fromEngland.Brand let rip from ball oneand spanked it to all parts ofthe ground. Thomason quiet-ly accumulated at the otherendwhile “HelicopterBrand”

kept the scoreboardracingalong. All it tookwas 15 overs, with Brand finishing on 82*and the young Pom on 16*. With five valua-ble points in the bankand thenew-look sideis starting to gel.Next SaturdayHermanus playVics away

and need to carry the momentum throughagainst the strong student side. – STICKYFINGERS
