This means 77,7% of 49 660 regis- tered voters in this municipal area went to the polls to make their mark, which is more than the overall na- tional figure for SA which stands at 73,43%. Of the total number of na- tional votes cast, 38 328 were valid and 287 were spoilt votes. In the 2009 general election 42 587 voters in the Overstrand were regis- tered and 82% of them participated in the national vote. For the 2014 provincial vote, 37 392 votes were cast in the Over- strand Municipal Area of which 37 109 were valid and 283 were spoilt. According to final results from the IEC’s provincial communi- cations office, the DA (Democratic Alliance) won 58,56% of the votes cast in the Overstrand for the pro- vincial election and 55,74% of the national votes cast locally. Mayor Nicolette Botha-Guthrie, the leader of the DA in the Over- strand, says she is very happy with the outcome of the general elections in the Overstrand. “My people worked very hard over many months when the election machin- ery kicked in with voter registra- tion weekends.” Botha-Guthrie says the DA met their targets, but no celebration was planned. “We be- lieve in getting back to work straight away.” She says the tendencies which they picked up during this election will form the basis for their strate- gic planning for the 2016 local elec- tions. According to Dayne Nel from Whale Coast FM, Hawston was the most closely contested area in the Overstrand. She reports that the DA walked away with 49,44% of the votes in Hawston with the ANC hot on their heels with 40,41%. The ANC (African National Con- gress) won 36,22% of the total votes cast by Overstranders in this year’s national election and 35,44% of the provincial votes. In the 2009 general election, 33,46% of Overstrand residents vot- ed for the ANC and 54,51% of them voted for the DA in the national vote, which shows that the local ANC has gained ground. Ward 12 councillor, Vuyani Maco- tha, and head of mobilisation for the ANC in this area, says: “We are very pleased with the support we got from our voters. We increased the number of votes in our ANC basic wards and increased numbers in some ‘hostile’ wards.” He says Theo Oliver (former depu- ty mayor of the Overstrand) will be serving in the Provincial Legisla- ture, where he will be joined by Maurencia Gillion, local ANC coun- cillor. According to the mayor’s of- fice, no local DA members will be serving in the Provincial Legisla- ture. The VFP (Vryheidsfront Plus) re- ceived 1 079 votes in the national election, which is 2,82% of the total number of votes cast in the Over- strand, and 509 votes in the provin- cial election – 1,37% of votes cast. The EFF (Economic Freedom Fight- ers) won 521 votes in the provincial vote and 564 national votes, which is 1,47% of the total votes cast in the Overstrand. Gigobani Nozongava, EFF nation- al candidate and local representa- tive deployed to the Overstrand, says: “We are very happy with the results in the Overstrand and as a new party we have something to cel- ebrate. The EFF will now form for- mal structures around the country and start preparing themselves for local government.” Several of the 29 voting stations in the Overstrand had well over 80% voter turnout. At the Hou Moed vot- ing station in Zwelihle, 99,56% of their 1 349 registered voters turned up. At the De Mond Caravan Park voting station, 93,29% (959) of the voters registered (1 028) at this ven- ue made their cross in the national election.

New substation increasesOverstrand’s capacityAnewelectricity substation,which is regard-ed as one of a kind in the country,was official-ly opened on Tuesday 29 April.TheWalkerBay66/11 kVsubstation,situat-

ed in Swartdam Road, was built after numer-ous considerations as the electricity demandfor Hermanus has grown from 13,8 MVA in1998 to a measured 24 MVA in 2012. Thismeans the demand for electricity has almostdoubled in 14 years. The existing Eskom supply point limits the

Hermanus supply to 24 MVA.During the design of the substation, a few

challenges were encountered, including thefollowing:• No 66 kV overhead lines were built, only

66 kV underground cables from the existingEskom substation were installed.• Asubstationinanurbanenvironmenthad

to fit inwith neighbouring environments dueto it being situated on the boundary betweena residential and industrial area.• Safety features – firewalls around the

transformers were built to fend off any possi-ble explosionand fires fromtheneighbouringhouses and to dampen transformer noise.• IndoorGISswitchgear–whichreducesthe

footprint of the substation as well as reducesmaintenance over the life-cycle of the substa-tion.• Through proper long-term planning they

were able to integrate thenew substation intothe existing 11 kV network.According to the municipality “the build-

ing of this substation shows the tremendousgrowth of the municipality over these fewyears, and theway it is investing its resourcesin ensuring that the growth is sustainable.”

Newmunicipal court out of the starting blocksELBÉ VAN HEERDEN

After years of planning, a new addi-tional court – which will focus onlyon contraventions of municipal by-laws, is finally becoming a reality forthe Overstrand. The cases which will be dealt with

in this additional court will includenoise complaints, speeding and traf-fic fines and violations of town plan-ning and building regulations.“At the moment municipal bylaw

contraventions have taken the backseat in the criminal court and areusually last to be heard,” says attor-neyandLawSocietyarearepresenta-tive of about 50 local attorneys, Adri-an Louw.“This means that the enforcement

of localbylawsbecomessomewhat ir-relevant.But it is important to try theindividuals contravening theselaws.”According to Louw, themunicipal-

itymust start adopting a stance of ze-ro tolerance where every small con-

travention of the law is prosecuted, leading to other crimes also decreas-ing.“With the help of the new munici-

pal court, the magistrate’s court willalso be able to operate at a higher ca-pacity and give attention to seriouscrimes, including theft and drug re-lated crimes.“The community wants to see a

functioning lawsystem. If the systemstarts falling apart, it leads to vigi-lantism within communities.”Louw is still concerned about the

current magistrate’s court.“The additional court will help

with the criminal case loads, butwillnot address the issues regarding thecivil, family and children’s court.“Therehasnotbeenenoughspatial

and personnel capacity for at least 15years. The current magistrate’scourt is in serious need of rebuildingand expansion.”Tendernotices to furbishandshop-

fit the new building have been pub-lished (HT 1 May) and must be sub-

mitted by 23 May 2014.The Overstrand Municipality has

already advertised for the position ofa prosecutor/legal advisor (HT 8May),while themagistratewill beap-pointedbytheDepartmentofJustice.Lionel Wallace, senior manager of

law services at the Overstrand Mu-nicipality, said that a part of Harmo-nyHouse, situatedwithin themunic-ipal grounds, will be converted foruse as the new court.“Building will commence soon.

The next step in the process is to ap-point thenecessary court officials, inline with the requirements from theDepartment of Justice.“Furniture for the court must go

through a formal procurement proc-ess,” said Wallace. He added that theopening date for the additional courtis subject to the process to bring thebuilding up to the standards as setout by the department.Theaimis toopenthedoorsassoon

Moreweekend funatPlatbosSARAH TAYLOR

Africa’s southern-most indig-enous forest, Platbos, nearGansbaai, got a boost lastweekend when 150 enthusias-tic children, teens and adultsunited to help plant 3 000 in-digenous trees as part of thefourth annual Greenpop Re-forest Fest.

Due to the event’s popularity,it isnowheldovertwoweekends:one for families and the second,to be held this coming weekend, for“friends”,whenGreenpopaimstoplant a further 5 000 young trees.Since the first Platbos Reforest Festin2011atotalof11 000 treeshavebeenplanted with Greenpop. The trees are being planted in an

area that was previously an indige-nous forest, whichwas felled foragri-culture before the fields were aban-doned and the “aliens” (the Austral-ian rooikrans) moved in, explainshorticulturist Melissa Krige, whoowns Platbos with her arborist hus-band, Francois. The planting areaborders the existing ancient indige-nous forest of Platbos. The Kriges began their own refor-

estation work in 2008 and planted3 000 trees themselves before involv-ing Greenpop in their efforts. The trees, bladder nut, hard pear,

white stinkwood, white milkwood, wildpeach, whitepearandwildolive, are propagated in the Kriges’ exten-sive nursery.Melanie says the trees are very

slow growing, “about 4 mm in tree-trunk diameter every four years”.The largest white milkwood in theforest is estimated to be about 1 000

years old, although Melissa says theroots are older.Platbos,whichisabout40hectares,

is in the process of becoming a Con-tract Nature Reserve with CapeNa-ture, which will manage the reservetogether with the non-governmentalorganisation, thePlatbosConservan-cy Trust.Greenpop isaCapeTown-basedso-

cial business startedbyagroupof en-ergetic young South Africans com-mitted to givingback to society in thegreenestwaytheycan.Since2010, theorganisation has planted over 30 000mostly indigenous and some fruittrees on the Cape Flats; as well as invariousvillages in theWesternCape.Theorganisation is the inspiration

of Misha Teasdale, Greenpop’s “tree-EO”, who previously worked in theadvertising industry.“I was earning very good money,

but there was lots of consumptionand the lifestyle was out of my com-fort zone. While working on a partic-ular campaign, I rackedup360 000airmiles in four months.“When we returned home, my col-

league Rowan Pybus and I decided to

plant1 000 treesin amonth ininformalsettle-ments, to offset our carbon footprint. And so Greenpop was launched inSeptember 2010. We now employ 15people.“People who would like to support

Greenpop’s initiatives without get-ting grubby can sponsor a tree ormultiple trees by visiting the web-site. They will receive certificatesand GPS co-ordinates of their trees.”The Reforest Fest participants pay

to wield spades and get their handsdirty, but Greenpop strives to makeits greening initiative at Platbos funby integrating the hard work with aweekend of stimulating activities. This coming weekend, Simon van

Gend, Grassy Spark and Bobzyou-runcle, among other bands, will beperforming. Due to the sensitive en-vironment, each Reforest Fest is lim-ited to 300 tickets. For more information visit plat-

Lend a helping handWith the voter turnout at 77,7%, thepeople of the Overstrand have hadtheir say when it comes to leadership. But eachof us canplay a role inmak-

Victims grateful for supportYour front page article “Hemel-en-Aarde Valley farmattack – two of four suspects still at large” (HT 8 May)refers.OnWednesday 30April at about 21:00we experi-enced what every South African family fears most –an armed robbery in their homes.Wewere tied up andheld at gunpoint, ourhousewas ransackedand theper-petrators escaped in our car, which they crashed en-route to Hermanus. We immediately reported this incident to the Her-

ROY AND PIXIE WHITE

Hermanusmedici ‘melk’ pasiënteAs nuwe intrekker vanaf Gauteng net meeras ’n jaar gelede, was ek verbaas om te sienhoe die mediese beroep pasiënte in Herma-nus “melk”.In Hermanus is daar blykbaar nie ’n pri-

vaat dokter, spesialis of X-straal-departe-ment wat ingekontrakteer is nie. By almalmoet jy uit jou eie sak ’n bedrag inbetaalongeag wie jy is.

Hierdie was vir my onaanvaarbaar.

kliniek was ’n heel ander storie. My af-spraakwas vir 15:00 geskeduleer.

My geduldwas ná 50minute en ’n verstre-

daar 20 tot 30 minute per pasiënt by ont-vangs toegelaatword.

Dankie kliniek-susters, julle is die ware sterre.“I put it to you” Hermanus Hospitaal,

EmerantiaCupido,WesternCapeGov-ernment Health: Principal Communica-tions Officer responds:

In response to the letters fromMrsDorothySmith and Andre Roux (Hermanus Times 1May) a follow up was done with both com-plainants and how the triage system workswas explained.

Mr Roux and Mrs Smith were both satis-fied with the feedback they received.

In response to this third letter being pub-lished this week, the Western Cape Govern-ment Health, Hermanus Hospital would liketo thank Ms Erna Bosman for her positivefeedback pertaining to the cleanliness of thehospitaland the excellent service that isbeingprovided by the radiography department.

The hospital management would like toapologise for any inconvenience that wascaused on 23 April 2014.

The management wants to assure Ms Bos-man that her suggestions have already beenimplemented practically as reflected at herfollow-up visit on 30 April 2014.

Biological control needed in fight against alien invasivesThearticle “Alienhackers give fynbosa fight-ing chance” in the Hermanus Times of 8 Mayrefers:All of uswhocherishour fynbos and realise

how big a threat alien invasives are to it, oweCharlyn Vosloo and her team of volunteersandworkers ahugevote of thanks. It is peoplelike Charlynwho get off their couches and lit-erally take up arms against the threat. But how big a threat are aliens and why

should we care?CSIR environmental economist Dr Willem

de Lange and CSIR ecologist Dr Brian vanWilgen have estimated that the value of serv-ices provided by ecosystems in South Africaamounts toanestimatedR152billionperyear.Themillions of rands contributed to the econ-omy by nature-based tourism is not includedin this estimate. Services provided byMotherNature herself through eco-systems includewater, grazing and biodiversity. The researchers comment: “If we allow al-

iens to dominate our natural ecosystems, thesystemswill lose their ability to delivermanyof the benefits on which we depend for ourlivelihoods. Invasive alien plants use exces-sive amounts of water and smother our re-markable biodiversity, resulting in reducedriver flow, a loss of grazing and a loss of har-vested products from the veld.”Fire-adapted trees like pines and hakeas

contribute to20%of thealienimpact in fynbosecosystems, while invasiveAustralianacaciatrees contribute about 80%.However, hacking and poisoning of inva-

sive species by dedicated hackers inHermanus and the considerable efforts ofWorking for Water in the rest of the countrywill never win the war. We need the help ofnature itself.Biological control of thesealiensby pathogens from their country of origin hasbeen used successfully in South Africa and isan essential part of the offensive strategy.Pathogens include seed and flower-eating in-

sects, fungal diseases, wasps that producegalls, and so forth.De Lange and Van Wilgen add that they

found biological control to be very effectivein protecting ecosystem services. If there hadbeen no biological control of invasive alienplants in South Africa, the country wouldhave lost ecosystem services worth R48,2 bil-lion per year. They estimate that controlling the invasive

Australian trees just in fynbos has saved usR1,4 billion per year. The biological control of aliens in fynbos

is one of the fascinating topics in the courseon Fynbos offered at Hermanus FynArts, on15 June. Anyone who is concerned about pro-tecting biodiversity, not just in Hermanus, but in the entire Cape Floristic Region, willfind the course of great interest.

Dankievir Fynbos+FineArts= FynArts

Dankie vir die FynArts-fees. So jammer datiemand ’n klippie in die skoen moet hê daar-oor (AvN, HT 1 Mei).

5 years on and lots to smile aboutIt’s hard not to smile when you enter theiSmile orthodontic practise of Dr FransKruger inNorthcliff,Hermanus.Eventhoughthemainreasonforvisitingisexactlybecauseyour smile isn’t as perfect as it can be.It’s the warm, perfect teeth welcome smile

you receive from Dr Kruger when you walkthrough the doors of his practice, adjacent tohis andwife Louisa’s home at 9 Impala Street. This month it has been five years since he

first opened his doors. And there are at leastthree reasons for celebrating.

Not least of all the addition of little Estella(1) to the family fold, a sister to Sophia, whois now three years old.“Yes, we’re growing on all fronts,” says

Frans with a proud grin.Anotherreasontocelebrate is theextension

is still in the same field of enhancing yoursmile. Botox everyone knows, and fillers arefor smoothing out those laughing linesaround the mouth.” Dr Kruger offers thisservice twice a week, in the mornings. But his main focus is still dental orthodon-

tics for children. “This is the other reason forcelebrating. To give a public thank you to ourclients for their continued support. It is greatto see some of the brothers and sisters of theirnow older siblings also coming in for braces. So many of the same families have remained

with us as clients.”The Krugers are happily settled into the

Hermanus community. Frans says he stillmanages a few games of golf and squash witha pilatus class thrown in now and again, buthe’s had to wave goodbye to kitesurfing now, with little Estella now on board too.Louisa, besides being a mom and the man-

‘More than lip serviceneeded’forCBDandLemm’sCornerKERRY VAN RENSBURG

The saddemise of Lemm’sCorner, as seenthrough the eyes of Beth and Noel Hunt, and their suggestions to restore this oncevibrant and creative hub of Hermanus, has generated a great deal of interest.

The Hunts, who have owned Hemming-ways Bookshop in Harbour Road for the past19 years, say that after their letter was pub-lishedintheHermanusTimesof24April, theyexperienced a positive and supportive re-sponse to their proposal for Lemm’s Cornerand the Hermanus CBD.

They say: “Aswell as between 20 to 30walk-ins and telephonic calls received at our shop, wehavebeen informed that anexecutive con-sultant is currently proposing to negotiate alease onLemm’sCorner andwill put forwarda business plan to the relevant authorities.”

AngelaHeslopof theHermanusHistorySo-ciety has indicated that the society is in fa-vour of the proposal to bring about the resto-ration of the CBD and in particular Lemm’sCorner as a historical landmark of which thetown can be proud.

The Hunts confirm that considerable sup-port has been shown for the upgrading ofLemm’s Cornerwith a view to perhaps trans-forming this area into a park with trees, benches, gardens, and a fountain.

As far as the revitalisation of theCBD initi-ative thatwas launchedsometimeago, iscon-cerned, the Hunts say:

“In 2013 we attended a meeting by PetrusHendrickz, held in the auditorium. We putournamesdownonalistconfirmingourwishto participate in the proposals for pro-active

change.”Theycontinue: “Our focusasshopretailers

in theCBD is not on the Sandbaaimall or anyothersuchdevelopment,butsolelyonrevital-ising the CBD, which already is suffering asaresult of thegeographical shift to theCheck-ers/Woolworths malls.”

The Hunts say in the last five years theyhave seen a radical down marketing of theCBD and the neglect surrounding Lemm’sCorner is a point in case.

“Our proposals are not ‘about moaning’,but are rather pro-active suggestions with aview to creating change for the benefit of atown which stakes its claim internationallyas the whale watching capital of the world.”

The Hunts claim that at least eighteenmonths ago they sent a proposal to themayorsupporting the delineation of an old town, which was to include the revamp of Lemm’sCorner.

“Shortly afterwards, wewerevisited at ourshop byBen Solomon, an official of themuni-cipality. He enthused about the conceptwhichwe had suggested. To date, we have re-ceived no further response from either him, themayororanyothermemberof themunici-pality.”

Elizabeth du Toit, director of the Old Har-bour Museum, says: “The Board of Trusteeshas already identified and approved the im-plementation of a long-term plan, includingan enclosed garden with benches and lightsfor the Lemm’s Corner area, as well as a fewpermanent kiosks for selected traders. Thiswasdrawnupbyanarchitectandispresentlygoing through some processes, looking atsome other input from various members ofthe community, tenants and traders. Since

the last two publications of the HermanusTimes, somemore supportive proposals havecome forward and all of these go to the Boardof Trustees for its perusal. It will be meetingnext week (Thursday 15 May) and will thengive an indication of what the way forwardwill be.”

Although Hemingways and other retailersdo open 7 days a week, and have done so forsome years now, there still remains a consid-erablenumberof shopswhodonot followthispattern.

“To the best of our knowledge there are noregulations, apart from Village Square, re-garding retail shophours.Although it shouldbe obvious to retailers to take cognisance ofthe fact that Hermanus is a destination forvisitors from Cape Town and further afield,an entrenched mindset still prevails withmost shops closing midday Saturday only toreopen again on Monday morning,” say theHunts.

They say they had experienced a problemregarding therental of theirbusinesspremis-es as a result of the financial strain of annualincrementsway inexcess of current inflationand market rates. They were, however, ableto negotiate more realistic terms with theirlandlord.

“Unfortunately, this is not the case with anumberof small retailers. In factasmallbusi-ness in the CBD is currently paying almostdouble the price per squaremetre as is beingcharged by the Cape Town Waterfront.

The Hunts say: “We have been heartenedto know that our vision for theCBD, especial-ly Lemm’s Corner, is shared by so many oth-ers. However, more than lip service to makethis a reality is required.”

Hermanus teamback from tourELBÉ VAN HEERDEN

A tired but triumphant team of delegatesreturned earlier this week after blowing thetrumpet for Hermanus and the Whale Coastat the annual Tourism Indaba.

Blake Albert, general manager at theWindsor Hotel and one of the delegates, saidthe trip was a huge success and that they arehoping that the payoff will be visible withinthe next few months.

Albert is part of a team of local businesspeople who grouped together on aHermanusOn Tour mission to ensure a presence in theInkosi Albert Luthuli Convention Centre(Durban ICC) at the Tourism Indaba in Dur-ban held from 10 – 12 May.

“The Indaba this year was a lot better thanlast year. The Whale Crier, Eric Davalala, was absolutely amazing. He captivated boththe local and international visitors with hisenergy and everyone wanted to take a photowith him. He was truly an incredible ambas-sador for Hermanus and the Whale Coast asa whole.”

Albert said they used some old-school tac-tics to draw people to their stall.

“We had a welcoming cocktail party, andon Mother’s Day we handed out little bou-quets of Fynbos we had taken along for thetrip.” A cardboard shark to advertise the re-gion’s shark cage diving industry, was alsoa huge hit.

“The teamwork between the delegates wasoutstanding. Everyone worked together, channelling the right energy. It was such awonderful culmination of ideas and we drewa lot of attention,” said Albert.

“Therewerealsoanumberof bloggerswhobecame very interested in the area and weare hoping that they will be visiting soon.”

) ’nVyfdag-langeentrepreneurskursuswatdeur 26 gekeurde mense bygewoon is.

NATUREMATTERSDid you know: Mostflowering plants areadapted to be pollinatedby animals, especially insects. About a third of allour food comes fromcrops (fruits and vegetables, maizeandwheat) thatare pollinated by insects, especially honeybees. They are ideal pollinators because they deliber

ately collect pollen and continually move betweenflowers, often concentrating on a single plant species, and move over large distances. Our world would be very different without hon

eybees. So it is very worrying that honeybees arein severe trouble around the world. There is also some cause for concern in South

FIREBLADE SP: EXTRACTING THE VERY BEST FROMEVERY RIDER

Honda launchesCBR1000RRSPQUICKPIC

For 21 years Honda has pursueda concept of “Total Control” withtheFireblade, afterrewritingtherulebook in 1992 with the origi-nal CBR900RR.

Over the last decade theCBR1000RR has developed into per-haps themost balancedSuperSportmachine available, combining ex-ceptional performance and han-dling with a satisfying ability to ex-tract the verybest fromevery rider.Victories in theWorldSuperBike

(WSBK) championship and all-con-quering success at the Isle of ManTT, with average lap speeds of130 mph plus over 37,73 miles overthe mountain course, is testamenttotheCBR1000RR’sinnatecapacity.The open-class CBR has built a

loyal armyof fans around theworldover two decades especially withover 200 000 sold, throughout Eu-rope. And in response to demandfromhard-core performance enthu-siasts, Honda for the very first timein 2014 is producing theCBR1000RRFireblade SP. A track-focused, yetfully road legal, limited editionSport Production version of thestandard bike that not only looksspecial – it is special. In Japanese to give something

‘edge’ is to add polish. And for thededicated track day goer that’s ex-actly what the CBR1000RR Fireb-lade SP has been given: “Total Con-trol” with an extra edge. The chassis wears circuit-ready

front and rear Öhlins suspensionplus Brembo four-piston monoblockcalipers, with framerevisionsand new top and bottom yokes tosuit. Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa SPtyres are the finishing touch. The 999.8cc inline four-cylinder

engine gets the same updated cylin-

der head as the standard 2014CBR1000RR Fireblade, with im-proved inlet/exhaust gas flow andcombustion efficiency, and an extra2 kW peak power boost. HowevertheSPfeatures factory-matchedpis-tons and con-rods, to ensure opti-mum internal balance. As a track-focused machine

there’snoprovisionforapillionanda sleek single-seat unit savesweight.FurthermarkingtheSPver-sion out from standard is its ownunique Tricolour paint – white andtwo-tone blue, with a central redstripe and trademark Honda goldwheels.

At 35 mm (from 38 mm) the ex-haust pipe diameters are smaller,increasing torque and a new verti-cal connecting pipe balances pres-sure between cylinders two andthree. Peak power of 133 kW – up2 kW – arrives at 12 250rpm; torqueis improved in the 4-6 000 rpm area,peaking with 114 Nm delivered at10 500 rpm.The CBR1000RR SP’s 999.8cc, 16-

valve inline four-cylinder enginehas the same cylinder head updatesas the standard machine. The inletand exhaust ports have been re-shaped and polished with the com-bustion chambers “gas-flowed” to

improve efficiency.The CBR1000RR SP uses a new

“wave”design ignitionkey; it offersimproved security and its compactsize greatly reduces the chance ofbreakage. Also new is the fuel tankcap – it uses an improved breatherdesign for better venting.Instrumentation is a multi-func-

tion LCD with a cockpit displaydominated by the digital bar-typelinear tachometer that scrolls left toright as engine speed increases.Beneath this are themainnumer-

ical readouts: gear position, coolanttemperature, speedometer, clock/lap time, trip/fuel efficiency/fuel

consumption and odometer/nu-merical tachometer. At the bottomof the display are lights for head-light highbeam, neutral and indica-tors.Clear and easy to read in all light

conditions, the tachometer has fourdisplay modes: Conventional, which uses black LCD segments toshow current rpm; Reverse, whichemploys black LCD segments toshow remaining rpm. PeakHold in-dicatesrpmintheconventionalwayand also leaves a tell-tale segmentshowing the peak rpm achievedwhile Single Segment uses a singleblock to show current engine speed. In addition the odometer may beswitched to display engine rpm nu-merically.The lap timer features four

modes. The display can also showfuel consumption, average fuel effi-ciency, distance travelled and totalelapsed time.Toassistdebriefingaf-ter a session, lap-time recall modeshows the fastest lap time and thelap on which it was set.Toensuregearshiftingat theopti-

mum engine rpm, the 5-level shiftindicator display uses highly visi-ble white LEDs, adjustable forbrightness. They illuminate se-quentially as engine rpm rises, fi-nally blinking at a chosen pre-setrpm (default is 13 000 rpm but thiscan be set between 4 000 rpm and13 000 rpm). The interval betweensequential illumination can also beset at 0,200 or 400 rpm.The Honda CBR1000RR SP is sold

Well played to all the ladies.Wednesday was an equally beautiful day with 110

Saturday was a challenging day to say the least. The wind got up and the rain came down, but un-daunted we had 100 players braving the elements.

Thisweekwas theDockerall Cup,whichwas firstplayed for in 1948, and the format was an individualbogey plus. Coming out tops this week was an oldcampaigner in the formofHaroldBarkerwithaverygood +3. Congratulations Harold.

Harold alsowon on the South Course.Winning onthe North Course was an even older campaigner,Johnny Rhodes on +1. It is nice to see Johnny backplaying Saturdays.

8THYEAR: FUTUREOF RACE UNCERTAIN

WheelsandRunnersELBÉ VAN HEERDEN

The eighth annual Wheels andRunners Race took place in Her-manus over the weekend, andover600entrants tookpart in therace.

This year’s number of entrantswere down from last year.“In 2013 we had a record number

of 757 entrants taking part, whilethis year we had a total of 651,” saidlocal organiser Karin Coetzee.“According to the timekeepers

this trend is seen in most races. Itseems to be due to the state of theeconomyandthe increase in thepet-rol price.”Thisyear’s competitorscompeted

at a slower pace than last year.In the21,1 kmrace, JohannLubbe

came in first in a time of 1 hour 14minutes and 14 seconds, followedclosely by Tony Williams in 1:14:22.Gerrit Hendricks came in third ina time of 1:16:13.In 2013 this race was won by local

handcyclist,TiaanBoshoff inatimeof 0:47:21, while Johann Lubbe com-pleted last year’s race in a time of

00:48:42.The event attracted quite a

number of entrants who came fromfar andwide to take part in this one-of-a-kind race.According to Coetzee there were

runners from Kwazulu-Natal,Springbok, Graaff-Reinet, Oudts-hoorn, Mossel Bay, George andCape Town.New state-of-the-art timekeeping

equipment, from the About2Timeteam, was used for this year’s race.“The group is involvedwith races

across the country and did an excel-lent job,” said Coetzee. The equipment could track each

racer to see how far along the waythey are and then recorded theirtime the moment they crossed thefinish line. But the future of the race is some-

what uncertain due to the with-drawal of its main sponsor and theconvener stepping down. After eight years of being in-

volved, Coetzee is stepping down asconvener, citing personal familyreasons for her decision.Checkers has also withdrawn as

themain sponsor, said Coetzee “but

they will probably still be involvedalbeit in a smaller capacity”.The event organisers are in talks

with other companies to possiblycome on board as sponsors for therace next year. Coetzee confirmedthey are looking for a new mainsponsor.Besides the challenge of finding a

main sponsor, Coetzee also citedfinding accommodation for all thewheelchair racers as a major chal-lenge for next year’s race.“There is a shortage of self-cater-

ing holiday facilities in Hermanus, but hopefully new developments inthe area should fill this void.“We also struggle to find enough

marshals to man the course. Manyof our marshals did not show up onSaturdayand thecoursewasnot ful-ly manned.”But Coetzee would like to thank

everyone who has been involved inthe organisation of the event overthe last eight years.“The community has done so

much and I am hoping that the racewill continue with their support.”Toviewavideooftheday’sevents,
