Op daardie oomblik was ek so vreesbevange en het ek net begin bid dat niemand dood is nie.” So beskryf Debbie Visser (19) haar eerste oomblikke nadat sy in ’n trompop botsing betrokke was Sa- terdagmiddag om 14:30 op die R43 net ná die Sir Robert Stanford-land- goed. Debbie was in ’n Toyota Hilux- bakkie. Bestewiskundeonnie inprovinsieJANHENDRIK COETZER

“As dit kom by wiskunde-onderrigis die belangrikste om te onthou omdie ‘wil’ by kinders te kweek. Wantwaar daar ’n wil is, is daar ’n weg.”

Viljoen het haar onderwysloopbaanin 1988 by Hoërskool Hermanus beginen gee sedertdien wiskunde. Sy was eg-

Enditkanjyslegsdoen as jy almal in jou klas betrek.

“Wiskunde is soos enige ander taalwat jy aanleer.

According to CarlFredericks, DistrictManager: Overberg,Stats SA officers willvisit sampled house-holds in theprovince tocollect data fromhouseholdmembers bymeans of a question-naire. The LCS data isused to monitor andprofile the poverty lev-els and also provides the necessary data toinformdevelopment andmonitor inequality.

“The LCS is a household-based survey thatcollects detailed income and expenditure da-ta, aswell as information on education, hous-ing, social welfare, health and living circum-stances from households across South Afri-ca.”

The survey is conducted once every fiveyears and the last survey was in 2008.

Fredericks further ex-plained the data collec-tion covers a period of 12months where a house-hold is sampled for a pe-riod of four weeks.

“Acombinationof dia-ry keeping and recallmethods will be used tomonitor household ex-penditure during the pe-riod of the survey. Asampled household willbe required to keep anexpenditure diary for aperiod of two weeks.

The results of the LCSare also used by Stats SAto reweight the CPI bas-

90yearold’s quick reaction leads to arrestJANINE VAN DER RIET

The police, Hermanus Public Protec-tionanddetectiveswerecongratulat-ed on their speedy response and ac-tion over the weekend by a 90-year-old Northcliff resident. She even made a peanut-butter

sandwich for one detective as a ges-ture of gratitude after he had foundher stolen ring.On Friday, Ansie van Wyk em-

ployed a new cleaner recommendedby a good friend as a reliable char.“A few hours later I dismissed her

with a R100 and taxi fare, as I wasnot satisfied with her method ofcleaning.” Soon after the char left,Ansie looked for her diamond ring, but to no avail. She immediately phoned the po-

lice, Hermanus Public Protection, the detective office and ADT who allarrived within 30 minutes and setabout looking for the char.“On Sunday morning, detective

Ruehan van Romburgh arrived atour house, withmymissing ring andthe woman who had worked in myhouse, in the back of the police van.”

The police are investigating a caseof theft against the char.It is,however, not the first timeAn-

sie’s quick reaction has led to the ar-rest of a suspect. In February this year, a man was

arrested after he first attempted tosteal goods from the house in North-cliff,andthenmovedontostealgoodsin the area where he was caught red-handed bymembers of the police andsecurity companies. The arrest was made after Ansie

gave officials a good description ofthemanwho hadenteredtheirhome.

“Nou, amper ’n jaar later, is dierommel steeds daar.”

Mariana Viljoen, onderwyser by Hoër

Dit het my so drie werks-dae geneem.

So, as iemand in die omgewing van Maart-blom-, Meent- of Wesendstraat dalk verveeldis – kom help asseblief!

Generosity of strangers unbelievableWhat a wonderful thing happened to three oc-togenarians at Hermanus on 7 November.

We were on a bus tour from Noordhoek toHermanus for the day and after watching forwhales and seeing three - kindly helped by acouple from Wales and the USA - we walkedalong the coastal path and then stopped forlunch at Burgundy. Having enjoyed a goodmeal, we asked for the bill, only to be told bytwo smiling waiters that “Your bill has beenpaid”. We said “No, we have not received the

bill yet”. The waiters insisted that it had beenpaid - and when, in disbelief, we asked whohad paid the bill for the three of us, they said“By two couples sitting at a nearby table”.

We could not believe our ears and asked tobe shown where they were. “They have left”,we were told. We would so like to thank thesefolk for their amazing kindness and generosi-ty to three “oldies”.

KOMMENTAAR

Die HT het walviskenner en fotograaf Dave de Beer genader, en hy verduidelikas volg: “These are of course Southern Right whales. In this photo two whales, both adults, are sticking their heads out of the water. The rostrum or bonnet is visible. This is the narrow top jaw of the whale. Note all the callosities covered in whale lice (off white in colour) and the darker jaggered barnacles.” FOTO’S: RETHA RUST

“In this photo the head of thewhale is above the surface, but this time with its mouthopen exposing its baleenplates. This is a rare shot asS.R.W’s don’t often feed inour waters, so no reason forthem to have their mouthsopen. Note the rostrum separated from the bottom jaw, with its callosities visible.”This is a great series of photos, says De Beer, who recently launched his new bookHermanus Whales, the jour-ney continues.

Have water meter testedThe letter “Water bills soar after installationof new meter by Overstrand Municipality”(HT 30/10/2014) refers:

A while ago I had the same problem in mybuilding (not located in the Overstrand), andafter the new meter was installed, water con-sumption jumped from 15 units (1 500 liter) toa whopping 35 units (3 500 liter) per day.

And it does not matter explaining to the mu-nicipality that it is physically impossible foraround 80 persons living in the building toconsume that amount of water daily – it wasmy problem.

Eventually they agreed to have the metertested, and my account was credited with thedifference. The meter was never tested, anda new meter was installed. Lo and behold, thesame readings again. As I was on the brinkof getting rid of this building, because nowI have no ground to stand on. Neither can Iafford this enormous water bill.

The municipality (same as Overstrand) justsees it as my problem, and insists that thereare leak/s in the building. Needless to say, Iwent throughthatbuildingwithamagnifyingglass looking for leaks.

Just as I was about to put the building upfor sale, a private company started removingall the water meters under the pavement andplaced them about 1,5 m above the pavement, next to the buildings. Guess what, the readingis back to around 15 units per day, and themunicipality can just not come up with an ex-planation.

Roderick Williams has not explained in hisresponse how Mr Dekker, using around 2 000liter per month, can now consume 3 600 literper month. To conclude, Mr Dekker, get a pro-fessional to inspect the installation of the wa-ter meter, and have the meter tested.

What is itwith this town?

We moved to Voëlklip permanent-ly six weeks ago, having owned ahouse here since 1988, which wedemolished and re-built threeyears ago.

Service providers here seem tothink they have a right to live inslow motion, and that we owethem a living, but yet complain ifowners seek help elsewhere. Whatan eye-opener. Over the last sixweeks, we are still waiting for theelectrician to fix a heater in thebathroom, for the cupboard guy to

fix therustyrunners, for thebuild-er (been waiting almost threeyears) to fix the faults and cracks. What is it with this town?

I could name and shame, wouldactually love to do that, but amwilling to let anyone contact me ifthey want to know who not to em-ploy. We also have great recom-mendations for reliable people, ifanyone is interested.

There is noplace likeHermanus

On Thursday 30 October, the an-nual Izibusiso Charity Golf Daywas held at the Hermanus GolfClub. The day was a great success– the weather was good, the coursewas in magnificent condition anda wonderful spirit of camaraderieprevailed.

However, the success of the daywas really directly due to the gen-erosity of the “Izi Charity Day”sponsors and the support of theHermanus golfing community, our twoever faithfulandunfailing

power sources.I would like to publicly thank all

the sponsors and the players fortheir ongoing support.

Truly, there is no place like Her-manus, it is a town with a greatheart; only with the help of suchcompassionateandpublicspiritedpeople are charities, like Izibusi-so, enabled to minister to those inneed.

Surfaceof courtsatAtlantics TennisClub ina shocking state

I am writing this letter in the hopethat someone at the municipalitywill please take note:

For the past few years the only twotennis courts available in MountPleasant have been seriously neg-lected.

Security is non-existent, whichmeans that the clubhouse is brokeninto on a regular basis and the netshave to be stored at a member’shouse.

Floodlights are in situ, but the ca-bles have been stolen. Despite beingreplaced (and council advised by themembers to re-install the cables in-

side the poles), they have been stolenagain. The surface of the courts arein a shocking state and debris andsand need to be removed before anyplay can take place.

The only other two courts availa-ble (at the top end of Mount Pleasantin a safer location) have been turnedinto a play park.

Atlantics Tennis Club is an activeclub that has two teams that partici-pate in the Boland club league.

There are many primary and highschool aged kids within the commu-nity who want to play tennis and theadults are more than prepared to

help coach and mentor these kids.During the weekend of 1 Novem-

ber, the metal uprights that hold thenets inplacewerecutwithnoconsul-tation or consent from the club.

That week the members arrived atpractise to find that they had disap-peared completely.

Despite this, the club continuesagainst all odds to survive with fan-tastic commitment and drive.

Please, please municipality, helpthe community of Mount Pleasant byprovidingplayablecourts tokeepthekids off the street.

Coldandwetweather isexpecteduntilFridaynight, butshouldclear up by Saturday morning. Sunshine is forecast until afterthe weekend, but temperatures will stay below 20° C. FromMonday the mercury will again reach 22° C.

NATURE MATTERS: DID YOUKNOW... TheCape Dune MoleRat (Bathyergussuillus) is thelargest completelyundergroundmammal in Africa and can have a mass ofover 2 kg. These rats are found in the softcoastal sands of the Western Cape wherethey leave their large, signature molehills. They are adapted for digging with strongclaws on the feet and large protruding incisor teeth. The lips close behind the groovedteeth to stop them from swallowing sandwhile digging or feeding. They eat underground roots and bulbs and are a menacein many a coastal garden. Allwheeldrive Jaguar FTypeRboosts recordbidQUICKPIC

The new all-wheel-drive JaguarF-TYPE R Coupé ensured theBloodhound SSC World LandSpeedRecordprogrammepasseda significant high-speed testingmilestone.

The testmarks thestart of amajortechnical partnership between Jag-uar and The Bloodhound Project, with the ultimate aim of raising theworld land speed record above1 610 km/handtoassist in inspiringthenextgenerationof scientistsandengineers, which is the overall ob-jective of the project. The currentrecord stands at 1 228 km/handwasset by AndyGreen in Thrust SSC in1997. Andy will drive the Blood-hound Supersonic car.

On the relatively soft surface of

the Hakskeen Pan desert in theNorthern Cape, the stability of theAWD F-TYPE R Coupé and its dy-namic ability – it has a limited topspeed of 300 km/h – enabled the suc-cessfulcompletionofavitalcommu-nications test for the BloodhoundSSC team.

Ian Hoban, vehicle line director,Jaguar said:“Our target with engi-neering the all-wheel drive F-TYPEwas to maintain the engaging rear-drive character that’s so importantto Jaguar sports cars, yet offer evengreater dynamic capability. The re-sult is a controllable, exploitableand blisteringly fast performancecar in all weather and road condi-tions.”

The AWD F-TYPE R Coupé wasdriven flat-out by Bloodhoundproject director and former WorldLand Speed Record holder, Richard

Noble, who said: “We are absolutelydelighted to announce Jaguar as amain partner to the BloodhoundProject. This is a very fine match –Jaguar is very strong on innovation

andwith its huge drive in advancedtechnology, education and motor-sport track record, we have the per-fect partner. Together we have de-veloped outstanding inter-team

synergyand this is avery special re-lationship.”

Fitted with the same radio equip-ment as the jet and rocket poweredBloodhound SSC, the F-TYPE wasdriven head-to-head at top speedwith a similarly equipped jet flownat 805 km/h just metres above theground. The combined closingspeed of almost 1 126 km/h enabledthesuccessful test of the systemthatwill allow communications be-tween the ground crew and AndyGreen in Bloodhound SSC, whichwill runfor the first timeontheHak-skeen desert just twelve monthsfrom now.

The addition of all-wheel-drive isone of a number of performance en-hancements to the award-winningJaguar F-TYPE range, which willgrow from six to 14 derivatives in2015.

Who let the DOGSout? Many followers of the tongue-in-cheekDOGS golf report wanted to know moreabout the group.

Dave Smith, DOGS golfer, and reporter, responds: “Well, the GS obviously standsfor Golf Society, but what about the DO?”

That question has been asked manytimes but the truth is that “DOGS” is notshortforanything,althoughoneLiverpud-lian, trying to impress, did once suggest“Doctors, Obstetricians, Gynaecologistsand Surgeons”.

In fact, around ten years ago, half-a-doz-en guys got together to play a friendlyroundofgolfeachTuesdayand, sincethen, the DOGS have developed into what theyare today. The group has a self-imposedlimit of 50 members and is currently onlyone short of this figure although there isa queue to join. Themembership compris-es roughly 50% South Africans and 50%from overseas, mainly Europe. Of the Eu-ropean contingent, around half are swal-lows.

The members range from an ex-Spring-bok pole-vaulter to an ex-England squashplayer, from a Savoy-trained chef to an

Olof-sponsoredrestaurateur,from current andex-publicans (the former are more popu-lar) to an ex-Professor (and ex-publicancombined).

They play every Tuesday at Kleinmondin their distinctive pink shirts, except foronce a month when they play elsewhere–mainlyHermanus, Theewaterskloof andArabella.Thereisalsoa less formalFridaymorning school.

There is a league table which runsthroughout the year as well as an annualmatch-play competition and numerousothermedal, alliance and better-ball cups.

The year climaxes with the no-holds-barred RSA v Rest of the World match.

The standard of golf ranges from the av-erage to the indifferent but that doesn’tmatter.Theimportantthingisthecamara-derie, the banter, the leg-pulling and theover R40 000 which the DOGS have raisedfor charity.

The DOGS played the Landlord’s Cup, in the formof an individual Stableford (log), in Hermanus on11 November. It is hard to think of a logical reasonwhy the scores

were so high on Tuesday. Is the Hermanus coursegetting easier? Is the standard of DOGS’ golf gettingbetter? Is there a concerted effort to get handicapsdown before the big endofyear fixture? No logicthere then. The Countback King won again without the need

of a countout and so had nothing (much) to moanabout, closing the gap at the top of the log to just5 points with 2 to play. Hanging Judge Robinsonwants to see the catering staff as there must havebeen something in his halfway sandwich to accountfor his back 9 performance. The Landlord’s Cup, a blind pairings competition

(or the blind leading the blind in some cases), waswon by Biggles and The Prof.

ZurichHermanusbares their teethLast weekend the Zurich Her-manus First XI sent a loudmessage out to the rest of theBoland Premier A Leaguewhen they dispatched seconddivision Spes Bona at the SirDe Villiers Graaff Oval.

But Hermanus did not have itall their own way. Sent in to batfirst on a tricky first-morningwicket, the Hermanus openersstruggled to get the measure ofthe slow wicket from the start.DerekBrandandBradleyPeters-en perished early, popping easycatches to cover. Lee Thomasonand Dirkie Marais consolidatedbutweremade toworkveryhardfor their runs, each of them get-ting good grafting 50s.The Spes Bona spinners

bowled very well though andgave very little away, makingscoring pretty tough. The frailHermanus middle order againstruggled and bits and bobs fromthelowerorderensuredafirst in-nings total of 173.The visitors’ response started

off well, but the relentless grind-ing of Tashwin Lukas and Wil-lem du Toit soon took its toll. Atonestagetheywere lookingquitecomfortable at 54 for 2, but thenthe whole pack of cards cametumbling down as the tall work-horse Du Toit got into his stride. At tea, the young Stellenbosch

side were teetering on the brinkat 64 for 6 and not long after that,Derek Brand capitalised on thegood pressure created by thequicks.Brandbowled19oversonthe trot and brilliantly exploitedboth the pitch and the frailties ofthe visitors’ lower order.Du Toit finished with 5 for 26

off 14 balls, Brand with 4 for 36off 19 and Bradley Petersenpickedupthe lastwicketwiththescore one short of 100.The late-afternoon gloom put

anearly end toproceedingswith-out aball beingbowled in the sec-

ond innings, leaving enoughtime for the boys to watch theBokke get taught a proper rugbylesson against a well-preparedIreland!Sunday’s crisp South Easter

soon shook out any Saturdaynight cobwebs and play resumedat 09:45. Thomason failed for thefirst time in four innings andskipper Brandwas a lone specta-tor at the other endas the top andmiddle order failed yet again.Tashwin Lukas showed why heshould be promoted up the orderas he held the innings togetherwithareallywell-constructed37.The young Keanu Oppermanjoined Lukas for the last wicketand it was that specific partner-ship that finally broke the backof the very verbal opposition.Hermanus were eventually

bowled out after lunch for 148, anoverall lead of 222.The fourth inningswasalways

going to be a tester and so itproved, as Brand and Petersentore through Spes Bona in notime. Brand again picked up 5and Petersen 4, with the latterpulling off a world-class one-handed catch to end the match. The visitors simply had no an-swer to the slickHermanus field-ing and bowling and were bun-dled out for a paltry 81.In the endaconvincing 141 run

win for the Zurich HermanusFirst XI, but the home side wereleftwithquitea fewissues topon-der, not least of all the spate ofhamstring injuries.

)Thisweekend is abye for theFirstXI.Thatshouldgiveenoughtime for the players andmanage-ment to solve the problems of thenon-existent middle order, sothat they can be ready for the 50-over challenges that lie ahead.Still, a win is a win and this

Hermanus side is starting toshow glimpses of what they arereally capable of.
