The Heritage WallWhen the Thomas B. & Kathleen M. Donnell Patient Pavilion was constructed in 2007, the healing environment was infused throughout every aspect of the building. This includes the Heritage Wall that connects the Pavilion Lobby to the Appleblossom Café.

The Heritage Wall intertwines the history of the city of Findlay, Hancock County and Blanchard Valley Hospital as depicted by verbiage and pictures etched on glass plates. The wallpaper spanning the length of the wall showcases apple trees, a homage to the Blanchard Valley brand and a celebration of Ohio’s historical “Johnny Appleseed,” who traveled throughout this part of the state planting apple trees.

Our Intentional FutureYou may notice that the far end of the Heritage Wall

has been left blank. During the building of the Donnell Patient Pavilion this was done with intention and

purpose. The goal of the blank space was to leave an opportunity for the intertwining history of Blanchard Valley Hospital and the community to continue, and

the display to follow that history as the hospital grows and changes with Findlay.

The majority of the artwork showcased along the Heritage Wall, and throughout the Donnell Patient Pavilion Lobby at Blanchard Valley Hospital, consists of original work from local artists and artists located throughout Ohio. These works were selected from a variety of genres to ensure all viewing them would find some piece to their liking. The artwork includes pieces created by Findlay natives Philip Sugden, Betty Fulmer (who works under the signature Juno Sky) and our local Findlay Glass companies. The hospital also features additional art from other local artists throughout the building.

Of deep significance to BVH, the Philip Sugden piece on display was created on handmade paper and represents the “Art of Healing” written in multiple languages which honors the work done at the hospital. Both Sugden and Fulmer are Findlay natives who are nationally recognized for their work and have pieces displayed throughout the country and the world.

The display of Findlay Glass relates to our history during the gas boom era and the manufacture of glass in Findlay. Each piece of Findlay Glass is representative of the individual glass manufacturing factories in Findlay

A Local Hospital, Supporting Local Artists

The cursive writing embedded in the wallpaper is from a book utilized during early hospital board meetings. The book, which is on display along the wall in a preservation box, is one of the earliest artifacts on record related to Blanchard Valley Hospital. One of the writings found in the book that was utilized on the wall refers to a “new addition” to the hospital in its very early years of existence. That quote was intended to reference growth, sustained progress, and a dedication to meet the continued needs of the community – all things Blanchard Valley still strives for today.
