Can you believe that we are wrapping up the end of the summer? Very soon it will be time for my oldest son to start Kindergarten! It’s an exciting time for our family. I hope that you have enjoyed this summer and all the special moments that this season brings. Time with family, time with friends, and time to just sit back and relax is never overrated. Soaking in the sun is also such a blessing!

With the end of summer comes time for back to school! We would love to see your pictures of your little one’s first day at school. This momentous event is a milestone for many parents and we wouldn’t want to miss it either. Feel free to send us your snapshots of your child’s first bus ride, first day of high school or maybe a group shot at the bus stop! We are also looking for

vacation pictures and Labor Day weekend pictures for the Heri-tage HOMEfront!

Be sure to enjoy the month of August and make time for your loved ones! I know that I will!

Best regards,

BernadetteBernadette HayesNorth Cincinnati Area [email protected]

* The Mason Police Department does not tabulate incidents in The Woods.

MAY 16, 2012 THROUGH JUNE 15, 2012

The accompanying table shows a break-down of police activity for the one-month period beginning May 16, 2012 and end-ing June 15, 2012. This summary table is compiled from Mason Police incident logs for the period.

During this period there was some police activity within our neighborhoods including criminal damage to the wall in the Braid Pod. However, immediately following this reporting period, there was a serious home invasion and robbery on Ross Lane. Sta-tistics reflecting this robbery will be compiled in next month’s report. These statistics remind us that we should continue to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity that we see to the Mason police (925-2525).

This report does not cover residents of the Woods as their subdivision is outside the jurisdiction of the Mason Police Department.

Captured Moments in Time

By Elizabeth McCabe | Photos by Just Kids Photography

In case you have never heard of Just Kids Photography, they recently opened their doors in April this year by owners Kathie Wurtzler and Susan Murphy. Kathie is a graduate of Ohio Pho-tography Institute, a master photographer with PPA (Profes-sional Photographers of America), a five-time Kodak Gallery Award Winner, and a trusted seminar speaker on photograph-ing children. She and her husband, Gregg, photograph senior portraits at their Wurtzler Photography studio.

Kathie, however, had a deep longing in her heart: she wanted to photograph “just kids.” With the help of her sister, Susan Murphy, who always wanted to have her own business, Just Kids Photography was born.

The sisters transformed an old farmhouse into a charming bou-tique studio. This studio is not your average studio, however. Just Kids Photography provides tutus, petticoats, dresses, leggings, and skirts for girls to use. There are also many options for boys and accessories for all. Portrait Parties can also be scheduled for children.

The main focus of Just Kids Photography is children’s photog-raphy. They focus on children ages zero through adolescence. However, they also photograph small families with children as well. Just Kids Photography provides phone consultations so they can design a set around a family’s preferences. They will

Just Kids Photography

with a Portrait Party

ask you what colors you decorate with in order to “create custom art pieces for your home.” Whether you want a wall portrait, a storyboard, or a collection package, Just Kids Photography can accommodate you. Best of all, there are no session fees.

The patriotic Portrait Party, enjoyed by Heritage Club families, was sponsored by The HOMEfront Magazine and Little Sonoma Fine Wine and Gourmet Foods, which provided wine and fruit trays for the event. Little Sonoma Fine Wine and Gourmet Foods can provide you with a large selection of California wines as well as wines throughout the world. This Por-trait Party was also sponsored by Qdoba Mexican Grill, which provided chips and

dips for all to munch on. If you are in the mood for authentic Mexican food, Qdoba Mexican Grill will satisfy your cravings with their quesadillas, burritos, taco sal-ads, and more. We thank them for their support of this event.

If you want to learn more about Just Kids Photography, just check out their website at www.justkidsphotography.com. This website will give you all the information that you need; plus, you can see galler-ies of exceptional photographs. Or, you might want to just give them a call at 513-847-4417. They would love to help you create a memorable art piece of your little one!

on may 30th, three families from Heritage Club had an incredible time at Just Kids Photography for their very own Portrait Party! the mattes family, Kaemmer family, and the Jones family took their little ones to Just Kids Photography, located on 6464 Cincinnati-Dayton road for this event. for this Portrait Party, Kennedy and margo mattes, madelyn and riley Jones, and Whitney and Courtney Kaemmer had the time of their lives choosing festive outfits and hair accessories available exclusively at the studio. once in their party attire, the girls were photographed together and individually.

The Evening Book Club has met Fridays at noon at the Heritage Club pool during June and July. We read and discussed Major Pet-tigrew’s Last Stand, a New York Times bestseller and first novel by Helen Simonson. Most agreed that they would like to keep in

touch with Major Pettigrew, a really delightful chap, who is fac-ing the challenges of loneliness, the generation gap, encroaching development, racial bias, social mores, sibling rivalry, and his own truly heartfelt feelings (which he thought had long been decided and set forever). The Major’s own evolving humanity gets in the way of his dyed-in-the-wool opinions and the result makes a lovely light story and perfect summer reading.

BUSINESSbeatFollowing up with “Leave It On Us”

By Brad Leffler, Owner of “Leave It On Us”

When I began my business in the summer of 2008, I was just looking for a little something to take up some of my time. Back then I had about 10 clients, which was perfect for what I was thinking. My typical daily routine was washing a golf cart and watering some flowers.

Now, in our 5th year of business, we have approximately 30 clients and it is only 2 or 3 weeks into the summer! The typical daily routine has also changed. I wake up early in the morn-ing to let many dogs out and then water flowers and go back to play with the dogs for the rest of the day. I really couldn't be any happier with what I am doing and how well my business is doing!

Don’t forget to contact Leave It On Us for all of your vacation services! Leave It On Us is run by teenager Brad Leffler, a Heri-tage Club resident. He watches pets, waters flowers, and does countless other things while you are on vacation! Be certain to contact Brad at (513)-253-3806 or [email protected].

furry friend Briar Rose Iannuzzi

By Elizabeth McCabe

Briar was originally born in Bucks Coun-ty, Pennsylvania on April 14, 2001, but she found her real home in October 2002 when she was introduced to the Iannuzzi family. It was Melissa who really wanted a dog. After some careful research, it was decided that a bearded collie would be the best fit for the family.

This dog is quite the traveler, too. Karen explains, “Within 8 months of her adop-tion she was on the road traveling 3000 miles with my father and brother in my Yukon, getting transported from Phila-delphia to Napa, California.” Briar took the 3,000 miles in style, lying on the back seat eating pretzels, playing Frisbee at the rest stops, and sleeping at dog-friendly hotels. At one point along the trip, some-one even complimented Briar, comment-ing what a “lifelike stuffed dog” she was

and how patient she was “sitting so still, waiting to get on her way.” But California was not Briar’s permanent residence. She actually moved again in 2008 on a 2,500-mile trip east. On this trip, Briar traveled in an air-conditioned van and became an instant favorite of the driver’s daughter because of her playfulness.

Her playfulness is one of the traits that make her the unique dog that she is. Briar especially loves to play with her Frisbee. This dog has also become popular with others, particularly the golfers on the green. In fact, many golfers refer to her as the “dog at the top of hole 7” since she is usually sitting out on her chain or run-ning after a Frisbee. However, Briar is not a fan of the golf course equipment and tends to chase after the workers’ carts in the morning when she walks the course with her owner.

Briar also loves to exercise. At the sight of her leash, she will start barking and jumping because the thought of a walk excites her that much! However, she is not very interested in chasing the geese, as most dogs are.

The funniest thing about Briar is that a mere haircut takes about 20 pounds off of her. Many people think that she is a big and heavy dog that sheds a lot; but in reality she is only 40 pounds of fluff. She doesn't ever shed, believe it or not.

This four-legged friend has been a wel-come addition to the Iannuzzi family. They are so glad to have found Briar and are looking forward to many more years of happiness (and Frisbee throwing) with their precious pet!

preciouspets

everyone needs a four-legged-friend in their lives, and the iannuzzi family is no exception. although this bearded collie is officially known as briar rose iannuzzi, they call her bri for short. interestingly, the breeder named this precious pet after none other than sleeping beauty. With Karen and John iannuzzi’s daughter, melissa, into Disney princesses at the time, Karen says that they “knew this was the right dog for us.”

Water WorksThis game is played like musical chairs. Play music while chil-dren run, skip and jump through a water sprinkler. After a short amount of time, stop the music. The child in the sprinkler when the music stops is in charge of controlling the music in the next round!

Frozen ToesFill a wading pool with cool water and ice cubes. Give each child a bucket. Ask the children to transfer as many ice cubes as they can from the pool to their bucket – using their feet! The child with the most ice cubes is the winner!

*Safety First: A parent or guardian should always be present when children are engaged in water play. Parents should use their discre-tion regarding age-appropriate games for their children.

On June 20, 2012, Heritage residents enjoyed not just another monthly dinner night out, but an exceptional dinner served by professional staff with the personal attention of Michael Frank-lin, General Manager, who oversaw every detail. We were seated in the California Room. It was described as “elegant, yet warm

and cozy, upscale, having a wonderful ambiance, intimate, and enhanced by its soft music and lighting.” All of which made it conducive for conversation and relaxation while we enjoyed the four courses served throughout the evening.

Beginning with the first course was a vast array of delicious appetizers: Camelot Chicken, which is a Coconut Encrusted Chicken with Coconut Honey Mustard and Pineapple; Parme-san Calamari, served with Spicy Marinara and Peppercorn Aio-li; Pear and Peach Bruschetta, a Sweet Peach and Pear Chutney over Triple Whipped Brie topped with a Balsamic Reduc-tion; and a variety of sushi that included Jag’s Roll - Tempura Shrimp, King Crab, Avocado and Cream Cheese along with Spicy Aioli; 5980 Roll - Tempura Shrimp, Spicy Tuna, Cream Cheese, Chives, Cucumber, Sliced Tuna; Oscar Roll - Kobe beef, Asparagus, King Crab, Lobster Hollandaise; Spicy Tuna Roll - Tuna, Spicy Aioli, Cucumber, Scallion, and Tobiko. We were warned not to overindulge in the appetizers and to save room for what was yet to come.

The second course was the “soup, salad, and grilled cheese.” This item is available on the lounge menu as well as on the lunch menu in December. By the looks of the responses to the review questionnaire, I’d say that we will definitely come back again and again. The Gourmet Grilled Cheese had Aged Cheddar, Fontina, Triple Whipped Brie, Arugula, Tomato Confit and Balsamic. The Crab Bisque had an intense Crab Stock, Cream, and Sherry Créme Fraiche. The salad was a Boursin Berry Salad, which included Gourmet Greens, Boursin Cheese, Fresh Berries, Hari-cot Verts, Candied Walnuts, Tomatoes, Craisins, and Red Wine Vinai-grette. This was a perfect combination for a summer lunch.

And the third course was my personal favorite, being a seafood lover. A generous portion of Seabass and Sliced Filet Mignon was served. The Seabass was seared with Thai Chili Beurre Blanc, paired with Garlic Mashed Potatoes, and Roasted Carrots. The Filet was also served with the potatoes and carrots along with Onion Straws. What can I say about these two meals? Well, not one negative word. You will just have to come for yourself to savor the delicious entrées. You definitely won’t be disap-pointed.

After the fabulous meal, who would have thought there was room for dessert? Like they say, bring it and they will eat it . . . and a scrumptious

fourth course it was. We all had a plate with a Mini Brownie, warmed with Peanut Butter Fudge Gelato, and a piece of Peanut Brittle on the side. We also sam-pled the Mini Créme Brulee with Traditional Vanilla Bean Custard Caramelized Sugar, and Berry Coulis.

The presentation is impressive with the way Chef Michelle Brown displays each dish. We have a scale from 1 - 5, with 5 being the BEST, and Jag’s was defi-nitely our top rated restaurant with all 5’s. Everyone agreed they would recommend friends to dine at Jag’s as well as return themselves.

Whether it is just two for dinner or an event, Jag’s can handle it with style to create a memorable experience for any occasion. They have a Private Event Coordina-tor, Laura Peyton, who will ensure that no detail is overlooked. There are rooms with intimate settings for 12 to 14 in the “Parlor Room” or “Florida Room.” The “Library Room,” “Mahogany Room,” and “California Room” can accommodate up to 60 for a sit down ele-gant dinner. Jag’s also offers audio and visual equipment for business meetings.

Best of all, the night’s not over after dinner. Atop the majestic marble & mahogany bar in their lounge sits a baby grand piano where a variety of the city’s most outstanding musicians perform live Monday thru Satur-day all evening. Each musician has a style all their own, covering all eras of music having you singing along with songs from yesterday to today. Or come out on Friday or Saturday night and dance the night away while enjoy-ing the new state-of-the-art light show and listening to some of the city’s best bands. The Company and The Sly Band are two of Jag’s mainstay house bands.

A wonderful alternative to dinner is Jag’s Friday Happy Hour Buffet from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. An abundance of appetizers, seafood, carved beef, pastas, salads and delicious desserts to name a few, all for a minimum of $8.95 per person. Summertime at Jag’s offers drink specials from 5:00 p.m. until close thru September 1, 2012. They include $3 Yuengling, $4 Summer Shandy, and $5 Well Cocktails. The Late Night Bar Menu start-ing at 11 p.m. until close in the lounge offers a variety of choices such as Fried Chicken Wings, Inferno Sushi Roll, Pork Belly Tostados, Gourmet Grilled Cheese, plus a couple of items to rotate.

i had my own opinion of what is anticipated and expected at Jag’s Steak & Seafood Restaurant. anyone who has been there raves about the steaks, and the seafood lovers will tell you the seabass is the best in town. but who would have predicted that some of our neighbors here in Heritage Club would pick the “grilled cheese and soup” (aka Gourmet Grilled Cheese and Crab bisque) as their favorite. it just goes to show that outstanding ingredients and care goes into each and every dish.

Sports nightsBy Evonne Marinakis and Residents of HC

Annemarie Reid organized the annual “Pod Parties” again this year. The pod party on Heritage Club Drive on June 4th, hosted by the Szawaluks and Cassi-nellis, was well attended. It featured the Kona Ice truck serving up slushies, kick ball and lots of water balloons!!

The Gigliottis continued the fun on June 11th on Raynor Court. On June 18th, the Curts invited everyone to the Colt POD party. It was a delightful evening full of some new and many familiar faces. The kids swam until dark while the adults shared a few laughs and some great stories that will be retold over the

Kids’

years. Thank you to all who attended and brought food and lawn chairs!

And finally the parties ended with a bang when Dave and Nicole Johnson hosted the Mackenzie pod party complete with yet another water balloon fight in uncharacteristically cold June weather!

This annual rite of summer event goes back eight or ten years in Heritage Club and has become tradition. Parents and kids alike join in having fun in the summer weather and enjoying each other’s company!

child-friendly garden

Gardeners love to share their interest in gardening, and sharing with their children can be particularly rewarding. Even 2- and 3-year-olds can help plant their own little patch, and watch as life unfolds around them. Here are some suggestions for mak-ing gardening enjoyable -- and safe -- for young children.

Stake a claim. Section off a corner of the garden or yard where a child can do as he or she pleases. It doesn't have to be designed or even particularly attractive, just a place to explore without risk of damaging your prized plants.

Let the children choose what they'd like to grow. Most often, these will be plants they recognize, such as pumpkins and potatoes. Plants with large seeds, such as beans, sunflowers, and nasturtiums, are easiest for small hands to sow. Though radish seeds are small, children delight in the almost instant growth and harvest. Or plant with a theme, perhaps a "pizza" garden containing tomatoes and peppers as well as herbs such as basil and oregano.

Children love hiding places. Consider

planting a

constructing a tepee from tall poles and twine, to be covered with climbing beans and flowers. (Be sure to leave an opening for a door.) Or create a special room: a circle of tall sunflowers with shorter sun-flowers or other flowers between them.

Many culinary herbs are attractive and have interesting scents. Chives, sage, mint, and basil are good choices for a child's gar-den. Edible flowers, such as nasturtiums, pansies, violets, and calendulas, are also good.

Since many other plants - even some-thing as familiar as rhubarb leaves -- are toxic, teach your child to consult with you before anything goes into his or her mouth. Only a few are so toxic they should not be used around children and

pets. Two extremely toxic plants are cas-tor bean (Ricinus communis) and preca-tory bean or rosary pea (Abrus). Many other plants are toxic in larger quantities and should be avoided in a child's garden. These include angel's trumpet (Brugman-sia), delphinium, foxglove (Digitalis), euon-ymus, morning glory (Ipomoea), St. John’s wort (Hypericum), lantana, cardinal flower (Lobelia cardinalis), sweet alyssum (Lobu-laria maritima), love-in-a-mist (Nigella damascena), and valerian (V. officinalis).

TIPS: Make gardening fun, not work! Offer encouragement and how-to, but go easy on detailed advice. If a child sees you at work in the garden, he or she will want to imitate what you do, which is the best way to learn.

Should I contribute as much as possible to my IRA and 401(k)? In a word, yes. Your earnings on a traditional IRA and a 401(k)grow on a tax-deferred basis, so your money can accu-mulate faster than it would if placed in an investment on which you paid taxes every year. Plus, since you typically make 401(k) contributions with pretax dollars, the more you contribute, the lower your taxable income. And your traditional IRA contribu-tions may be tax-deductible, depending on your income. If you meet income guidelines, you can contribute to a Roth IRA, which provides tax-free earnings, provided you meet certain conditions. Should I put away money for my kids’ college education? It’s not easy to fund your retirement accounts plus save money for your children’s college education. Still, college is expensive, so if you feel strongly about helping to pay for the high costs of higher education, you may want to explore college funding vehicles, such as a 529 plan, which offers tax advantages.

Should I pay down my mortgage or invest those funds? Most of us dream of freeing ourselves from a mortgage some-day. So, as your career advances and your income rises, you may wonder if you should make bigger mortgage payments. There’s no denying the psychological benefits you’d receive from paying off your mortgage. However, you may want to consider putting any extra money into your investment portfolio to help as you work toward your retirement goals. Work with your financial advisor to determine what may be most appropriate for your portfolio. Do I have enough insurance in place to protect my family? You may hear that you need seven or eight times your annual income in life insurance, but there’s really no “right” figure for everyone. You may want to consult with a financial advisor to determine how much life insurance is appropriate for your needs.  Am I familiar with my parents’ financial situation and estate considerations? Now is the time to communicate with your parents about issues related to their financial situation and

If you’re part of “Generation X” — the age cohort born between the mid-1960s and the early 1980s — you’re probably in one of the busiest phases of your life, as you’re well into your working years and busy raising a family. But just as you’re “multi-tasking” in your life, you’ll also need to address multiple financial goals. You may be asking yourself the following:

must juggle a varietyof fiNANCiAl issues

Gen X’ers

estate plans. The more you know, the better positioned you’ll be to provide assistance and support if and when it’s needed. For example, you should inquire of your parents if they’ve desig-nated a durable power of attorney to make financial decisions for them in case they’re ever incapacitated.

By answering these questions, you can get a handle on all the financial issues you face at your stage of life. It may seem chal-lenging, but taking the time now can help you better position yourself to reach your financial goals.     Provided by Edward Jones
