Sue s Hello! Insight Summer 2014 Hello Everyone, Welcome to the Summer edition of the Insight magazine. We’ve had a very busy period during the last few months during our 150th celebratory year so I hope you enjoy reading this edition and finding out what we’ve been doing. We’ve just started a process of redecoration throughout the HERIB building so please bear with us while things are a bit chaotic whilst we move furniture around etc but I’m sure it will all be worth it in the end. I’m sure many of you will know Barrie Wheatley, our Training Officer, who has been with HERIB for approximately 10 years and has worked in various roles supporting blind and partially sighted people for many more years. Barrie has gradually reduced his hours over the years and has taken the decision to take the last step towards a well earned retirement at the end of August this year (although Barrie really isn’t keen on the word retirement and I feel sure (and hope) we’ll still be seeing him regularly as he supports various activities on a voluntary basis. May I take this opportunity to thank Barrie for his many years of dedicated support and hard work and wish him a long and happy retirement from all of us at HERIB. The training function will continue with Tracy Atkinson taking over the reigns from Barrie, providing a variety of training opportunities for a range of audiences; including developing training services for blind and partially sighted people. Our celebratory plans for our 150th year continue and I would like to thank all business and individuals who are supporting us to help make this a very special year. There will be more information on the various events coming up as you read through this magazine. Enjoy the sunshine during summer; wishing you all much happiness and good health until next time …………. Sandra Ackroyd Chief Executive Here for people with sight loss

Sue s Hello!

InsightSummer 2014

Hello Everyone,

Welcome to the Summer edition of the Insight magazine.

News from our Board of Trustees

Hello everyone,

It is with great sadness that I pen my final letter as Chairman in thisissue of Insight.

As some of you may know , I wasrecently forced to resign theChairmanship of the Board of Trustees due to ill health, a decision I did not find easy or comfortable.

I have greatly enjoyed my three plus years in the Chair and the many friendships and contacts it has produced over this time. I hope to continue as a Trustee for a while longer as I am still devoted to the needs of the visually impaired.

Robin Russell, a long standing Trustee and friend of HERIB has agreed to be the Acting Chairman until a permanent replacement can be identified and I would ask you to give Robin your wholeheartedsupport.

I hope to see you again in the future.

Eric Harrod

New HERIB Vehicle

HERIB is delighted to have a new addition to its fleet of vehicles.

Our new Peugeot Teepee people carrier can transport up to five people plus one wheelchair passenger.

“Having a smaller more adaptable vehicle will enable us to be more flexible when transporting members to our Day Groups,” explained Services Manager Julie Woolley.

“It will also offer an additional resource for our Community Advice Officers plus it has a large storage space and so will be a welcome asset for transporting volunteers andequipment on our many fundraising events.”

The new vehicle will also be used by our SocialEyes Groups for outings.

As with all our vehicles, the Teepee has been branded with HERIB’s logo and contact details so is also a great way to promote the charity out and about in the community.

HERIB recently employed a new Driver/Activity Coordinator to work in the Day Groups on a Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Jackie Buckle has spent the last few weeks getting to know the members with a view to introducing activities to suit all tastes.

Jackie has a real passion for arts and crafts and is looking forward to working with the day group members on future projects. She is also interested in looking at ways to help members rediscover skills they can no longer manage due to their sight loss such as knitting, crocheting, sewing and gardening.

Jackie has already hosted some arts and crafts sessions in the day groups and is open to ideas from anyexisting or prospective groupmembers on activities they may like to try.

“We have a fully working kitchen here at HERIB; I’d love to do baking and cooking sessions with our members and I can’t wait to get started on a gardening project with them, anything

Introducing Jackie to help them retain their independence. I think it’s important for me to really get to know the members so I can tailor activities to suit them” said Jackie.

Day group member Kevin Northeyrecently took part in a craft session with Jackie, making papier mache money boxes to commemorate HERIB’s 150th Anniversary.

Kevin, who has been coming to a HERIB Day Group for many years said “It was good fun and I managed to not get covered in glue. I’m lookingforward to more activities like this in the future. I always enjoy my time at the HERIB day group and look forward to coming. The staff make you feel very welcome and are always there if you have any problems”.

Jackie joins the existing team ofDrivers/Activity Coordinators, Sue, Ray, Debbie and Dave who are all committed to ensuring our members make the most of the of their visits to our Day Groups. From quizzes and bingo, to outings to the park and indoor bowls, there is something for everyone at HERIB.

For further information about our Day Groups, please contact Julie Woolley or Alison Stannard on 01482 342297.

Beech Holme Court

Beech Holme Court is a sheltered housing complex of 22 flats which provides individual homes for visuallyimpaired people of all ages who are independent and care for themselves.

A Tenant Support Officer is on site from 10.30am—2.30pm Monday to Friday during office hours and a part time Activities Coordinator organises regular social activities including coffee afternoons, quiz nights and outings.

If you would like more information about Beech Holme Court’s facilities or to be considered foraddition to the tenancy waiting list, please contact HERIB on 01482 342297.

A new campaigning group has been formed to help people with visualimpairments in Hull and the East Riding increase their influence over both local and national issues thataffect their daily lives.

The group hopes to improve thesensitivity and responsiveness of the local institutions and companies responsible for the things that affect their quality of life and independence. We aim to do this by listening to the visually impaired community and developing good working relationships with key decision makers who can really influence changes for the better. In this way, the group aims not only to solve existing problems but also be a point of real consultation on future developments in this area.

Issues identified so far include:

Audio announcements on buses Quality of pavements and the rise of shared surfaces Street furniture and A boards Cars parking on pavements Electric vehicles

The group is being co-coordinated by Sarah Bassett, a guide dogscampaigner and Suzanne Allot, Engagement Officer for the local office of Guide Dogs. We would like anyone with a burning issue that affects the visually impaired to get in touch either by telephone on freephone0845 3727414 or by email [email protected].

HERIB Heroes

As always, it never ceases to amaze us the lengths that our supporters will go to raise much needed funds for us.

Goole day group member, Robert Moore (pictured above left) recently raised a staggering £1023.34 by completing a sponsored walk from North Cave to Brough.

Robert, who was accompanied on the walk by his wife Vivienne, asked friends and family to sponsor him and even knocked on neighbours’ doors to raise sponsorship for the walk. He also managed to raise £64 whilst on the walk by chatting to people along the way, whilst proudly wearing a HERIB T-shirt.

Robert lost his sight in 1995 and has been attending the Goole Day Group for seven years. He wanted to give something back to HERIB inappreciation for all the help andsupport he has received.

On a blazing hot Sunday morning when many people were probablyrelaxing in the sunshine, ElaineCornforth & John Taylor, work colleagues at Andrew Jackson Solicitors, braved the scorchingconditions to take part in this year’s Hull 10k race. Neither had entered the race before and both were beginner runners only a few months ago but they not only completed the race in one piece they also raised a fabulous £404.

Thank you Elaine & John, you are true HERIB Heroes!

Thank you to all our supporters!

Making a will is perhaps one of the most important things you will ever do. It is the only way to be sure that your family, friends, favourite charities and others are provided for as you wish after you are gone. By leaving a legacy to HERIB, you will help ensure our valuable work continues for many more years to come and your legacy will make a huge difference to someone in Hull or East Yorkshire who is struggling to cope with losing their sight. You don’t have to be wealthy to make a difference; even a relatively small legacy can play a valuable part in our work. Bob Owen (pictured above) was a well known and much loved HERIB member. He regularly attended yoga and cookery classes and had been a member of the Visually Impaired Theatre group at NAPA. Bob’s sparkling personality and sense of humour made him a favourite, particularly amongst the ladies! After a lengthy battle with Motor Neurone Disease Bob sadly passed

away earlier this year. Shortly after his death the charity was contact by his son’s and informed that Bob had chosen to leave HERIB £500 in his will. The family also held a collection at Bob’s funeral which raised a further £340 and sent us this message: “Thanks again for all the support all of you at HERIB gave dad over the years. I know he greatly enjoyed visiting HERIB and I think having that support, from both staff and other people with impaired vision, really helped rebuild his sense of independence and also self confidence in terms of things like travelling about town on his own.” Marcus and Jeremy Owen (Bob’s sons) We feel privileged that we were able to make a difference in Bob’s life and very honoured that he chose to recognise our support in this most special way. Legacy gifts can help us to change lives so be like Bob and do something amazing by remembering HERIB in your Will. For more information about leaving a gift in your will, please call our Legacy Officer, Angela Gregory on 01482 342297.

With grateful thanks to the family and friends of Bob Owen.
