Summer Hours: Monday: Closed, Tuesday – Saturday: 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. & Sunday: noon – 5:00 p.m. Dancing with the Stars Calling for Performers Anson County’s own “Dancing with the Stars” was received with enthusiasm last Oc- tober at Wadesboro Primary School. The overflow audience filled every seat and late- comers lined up against the walls to view the competition. Laughter and applause greeted every dancing couple. The show’s sponsors quickly realized that the show needed a venue that could accommodate a larger crowd if it was to be repeated in 2015. The second annual Dancing with the Stars will come to the Ansonia Theatre on Octo- ber 24. Tickets are $20 and will be limited to 250seats. Dancing with the Stars” pro- ceeds benefit Circles of Hope, an initiative to reduce generational poverty in Anson County. Visit www.circlesofhopeanson.org for more information about the program. One of the organizers, Sandy Bruney said, “We are ready to take applications for dancers. If you have ever wanted an opportunity to show your talents, this is your chance. Just call 704-694-6865.” Cheraw Arts Commission Presents Mipso Band September 3 The Cheraw Arts Commission presents the band Mipso on Thursday, September 3 at the Theatre on the Green at 7 p.m. The renegade traditionalists of Mipso are doing their part to take three-part harmony and Appalachian in- fluences into new territory. Formed in Chapel Hill in 2010, these four North Carolinians have been touring the country and will soon release Old Time Reverie, their latest album. When Mipso’s 2013 debut Dark Holler Pop rose to #8 on Billboard’s Bluegrass charts, the success surprised a lot of people - Mipso’s four members included. “Well, we didn’t know so many people would buy it,” laughs mandolin player Jacob Sharp, “and we definitely didn’t know we were a bluegrass band.” Since then Mipso has performed over 300 shows and welcomed frequent collaborator Libby Rodenbough’s voice and fiddle to the fold – and has continued to grow as musicians and songwriters, while drawing continual inspiration from their rich North Carolina roots. Their new album, Old Time Reverie, produced by Mandolin Orange’s Andrew Marlin, is a re- flection of that musical and personal growth - a gripping, mature sophomore release that finds the quartet expand- ing their sonic resources while doubling down on their experimentation with string band tradition. While the instrumenta- tion on the acclaimed Dark Holler Pop embraced North Carolina’s bluegrass heritage head-on, Old Time Reverie finds Mipso shifting their focus away from bluegrass, introducing new instruments and tex- tures to create a distinctly different sound. Clawham- mer banjo out of 1920s early country music meets atmospheric electric organ (played by Josh Oliver of The Everybodyfields) more native to 1970s pop. Add imaginative songwriting and a group cohesion gained from two years of near-constant touring, and the resulting sound is pow- erfully rhythmic, lyrically sharp, and woven with beautiful four-part har- monies. Tickets are $12 and now available at the Cheraw Community Cen- ter - 200 Powe Street. Call 843-537-8420.
